How Do I Determine a Commercial Shelf Life for Candles Without Claiming More Than My Actual Stability Testing Supports?
शेयर करना
Can I use the wax shelf life? No. CSI 464 and 468 state 60 months for the wax kept cool and dry. That says nothing about the fragrance in a finished candle.
Does an accelerated heat test let me claim longer? No. Heat tests compare formulas and reveal weak ones faster. They do not convert into a number of months you can print.
What should the claim promise? That the scent is at its best within the period, under stated storage. Never that it stays unchanged, and never longer than tested.
What a commercial shelf life actually is
For a scented candle, “shelf life” or “best within” means something narrow: the period during which the candle, stored as you describe, still smells and performs the way you sell it. It is a quality promise about fragrance, appearance and burn — not a safety date, and not a measure of when the wax stops being wax.
That definition matters because it tells you where the number must come from. Only one source can describe how your scent behaves in your candle over time: your own aged candles of that formula. CSI’s fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data. The 60-month shelf life stated on the CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages is about the wax in cool, dry storage. Even written guidance from a supplier about an oil in its sealed container describes the oil, not the oil inside your wax, jar and lid on your shelf.
So the honest process runs one way only: test first, read the result, then write the claim. If you begin with the number you would like to print, you will find a way to read the results to fit it.
The evidence a claim needs
Accelerated heat ageing and temperature cycling are useful companions — they show quickly which of two formulas is weaker — but they cannot replace any part of this list. A candle that survives a week in a supervised warm cabinet has survived a week in a warm cabinet. It has not survived six months.
From test sheet to claim: a worked example
Say you make a Woody Oud candle, 200 g at 8% of total weight in CSI 464 with a lidded jar, and you want to state a shelf life. You age three candles at each of five points (suggested), plus a fresh reference from retained oil at each. The oil is 15 × 16 g = 240 g for the aged candles, bought as three 100 g samples: 3 × ₹453.12 = ₹1,359.36. References come from the retained sample of the same lot.
| Test point | Candles passing your rule | Verdict | What it supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 30 | 3 of 3 | Pass | A claim up to 1 month |
| Day 60 | 3 of 3 | Pass | Up to 2 months |
| Day 90 | 3 of 3 | Pass | Up to 3 months |
| Day 120 | 3 of 3 | Pass | Up to 4 months |
| Day 180 | 1 of 3 | Fail | Nothing beyond 4 months |
The supported claim here is four months from manufacture. Not five, because nothing was tested at five; not six, because six failed. Some makers go further and set the claim one test point below the last pass, to leave room for lot-to-lot variation and storage you do not control. That margin is your choice, and it is a sensible one for a first claim.
Then add the condition: “stored lidded, away from direct sunlight and heat”, matching how the test candles were kept. If your retailers store differently, the claim does not travel with the candle to their window.
When the results are not clean
Real test sheets are messier than the example. Three situations come up often, and each has a conservative reading.
In each case the rule is the same: when the evidence is uncertain, the claim takes the shorter reading. You can always extend a claim later; withdrawing one from candles already sold is far harder.
Making the claim usable: dates and words
A period means nothing without a start date. “Best within four months” on a candle with no date on it is decoration. Print a manufacturing date or a batch code on every candle or carton, and keep a record linking that code to the formula, the oil lot and the test that supports the claim.
| Avoid | Why | Prefer |
|---|---|---|
| “Shelf life 5 years” | Borrowed from the wax; untested for scent | “Best enjoyed within 4 months of the date on the base” |
| “Fragrance lasts forever” | Untestable and untrue | “Store lidded, away from heat and direct sunlight” |
| “Smells as strong as the day it was made” | Promises no change at all | “Fragrance may soften gently over time; for the fullest scent, enjoy within the period shown” |
| No date at all | The period cannot be applied | Manufacturing date or batch code on every candle |
Keep the wording plain. Customers do not need a chemistry lesson; they need a period, a date and a storage note that are all true.
Extending a claim, and when to shorten it
A first claim is a floor, not a ceiling. Keep retained candles from production batches and assess them at later points. When a later point passes for the same formula — and ideally for a second oil lot too — you may extend the claim to that point. Extend in steps that match your evidence, never in round numbers you have not tested.
What to ask your supplier, and what not to borrow
Supplier information is still worth having, as background. Message CSI on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and any storage or shelf-life guidance for the specific oil and lot, and keep the reply in writing with your test records. It helps you store oil well and plan purchases. It does not set your candle’s claim; your tests do.
And let the claim limit your buying. If your Woody Oud candle is supported for four months, there is little sense in pouring a year of stock or holding a year of oil for it. CSI lists no oil pack above 1 kg; buy the 1 kg packs your next runs need, or ask for a quote, rather than chasing a bulk order your own claim cannot use.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%). CSI fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data; the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages refers to the wax. Accelerated heat or cycling tests compare options and do not predict an exact shelf life. Every test day, temperature, candle count, reject rate, lead time and cost of money is a suggested starting point or the reader's own figure. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed; larger quantities are shown at the 1 kg price and quoted on WhatsApp. Fragrance-oil prices re-checked 8 October 2026, wax prices 7 October 2026; product pages are authoritative.
