Cost decision · storage vs oil
One fix moves the candles, one changes the box, one changes the scent. The cheapest per candle is not always the cheapest per candle you can actually sell.
₹181.32
cost per sellable candle in a lidded salsa jar at an example 4% loss — lowest of five options
Quick answers — read this first
What number should I compare? Cost per sellable candle: materials cost per candle divided by one minus the share of candles you lose to fragrance or storage problems.

Where do loss rates come from? From your own stock: count complaints, returns and candles that fail your check against a fresh reference. CSI publishes no reject rates.

Is switching oil the expensive option? Not always on price, but it changes the product and needs full re-testing — wick, load, cure and storage — before it saves anything.

Can better packaging be cheaper? Sometimes. A cheaper lidded jar can lower cost and loss at once, though it changes the look and needs a wick re-test.
The short answer
Short answer: Compare cost per sellable candle for each option, using CSI prices for materials and your own figures for storage, packaging and loss rates.
Formula: Cost per sellable candle = materials per candle ÷ (1 − loss rate).
Honest rule: Do not switch oil until storage and packaging have been tested; the oil may not be the problem.

Straight answer
How Do I Determine Whether Better Storage and Packaging Are More Cost-Effective Than Switching to a Different Fragrance Oil?
Turn every option into one number: cost per sellable candle = materials per candle ÷ (1 − the share of candles you lose). Price materials from CSI's listed prices, add your own storage or packaging cost per candle, and use your own measured loss rate for each option — from a side-by-side test, not a guess. In the worked example below, a better storage room, a better box and a different lemon oil all land within a few rupees of each other; a lidded jar lands far lower. That is the usual lesson: the cheapest fix is the one your test shows actually reduces losses, and an oil switch is a product change that must earn its place.
One line: price each fix as cost per sellable candle, using your own loss rates, and switch oil only when storage and packaging cannot close the gap.
Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832.00 per kg puts ₹45.31 of oil in a 200 g candle; its page says citrus top notes fade faster than warmer families — which is why storage matters for it.

Frame the question as cost per sellable candle

A candle you cannot sell has still used all its materials.

When candles lose fragrance in storage, there are three broad ways out. Keep them somewhere cooler and darker. Pack them better — a lid, a carton, a barrier. Or change the fragrance oil to one that holds up better in your conditions. Each costs money, and each reduces your losses by a different amount. Comparing the price tags alone misses the point.

The fair comparison is cost per candle you can actually sell at your standard. If 10% of a batch drifts so far that you discount it, give it away or take it back, the good 90% have to carry the cost of all of it. A fix that adds ₹12.00 per candle but cuts that loss sharply can be cheaper than doing nothing.

The formula is simple: cost per sellable candle = materials cost per candle ÷ (1 − loss rate). The loss rate is the share of candles that fail your check — measured on your stock, not assumed. CSI publishes no reject or loss rates, and nobody else can give you yours.

Work out the baseline

Take a reader's current product as the example: a 200 g Citrus Lemon candle at 8% load in CSI 464, in a matte 200 ml jar with an Eco C1 wick, sold in volumes of 500 a month (the reader's figure).

Wax: 184 × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36. Oil: 16 × ₹2.832 = ₹45.31, from Citrus Lemon 1 kg ₹2,832.00. Jar ₹70.80, wick ₹5.90. Materials: ₹93.36 + ₹45.31 + ₹70.80 + ₹5.90 = ₹215.37 per candle, excluding packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.

Suppose the reader's own records show that 10% of stock held through summer fails their check against a fresh reference — an example rate. Cost per sellable candle: ₹215.37 ÷ 0.90 = ₹239.30. That ₹239.30 is the number every fix has to beat.

Oil value at risk
On a lavender line the oil alone is 16 × ₹5.221 = ₹83.54 per candle. At an example loss of 50 candles a month, that is 50 × ₹83.54 = ₹4,177.00 of oil a month going into candles that do not sell. The more expensive the oil, the more storage losses cost.

Price each option

Now add each option's extra cost per candle and its loss rate. The storage and packaging costs below are the reader's example figures — CSI does not sell storage or packaging, so use your own quotes. The loss rates are example results from a side-by-side test, which is exactly what you would run before deciding.

Cost per good candle
Five options for the same 200 g lemon candle (example figures labelled)
Option Materials + extra per candle Example loss rate Cost per sellable candle
Current: matte jar, warm store ₹215.37 10% ₹215.37 ÷ 0.90 = ₹239.30
Cooler storage room (reader's example ₹6,000.00 a month ÷ 500 = ₹12.00) ₹215.37 + ₹12.00 = ₹227.37 4% ₹227.37 ÷ 0.96 = ₹236.84
Lid sleeve and carton (reader's example ₹15.00) ₹215.37 + ₹15.00 = ₹230.37 3% ₹230.37 ÷ 0.97 = ₹237.49
Switch to Zesty Lemon (16 × ₹3.40 = ₹54.40) ₹93.36 + ₹54.40 + ₹70.80 + ₹5.90 = ₹224.46 5% ₹224.46 ÷ 0.95 = ₹236.27
Lidded salsa jar at 50-pack price (₹29.50) ₹93.36 + ₹45.31 + ₹29.50 + ₹5.90 = ₹174.07 4% ₹174.07 ÷ 0.96 = ₹181.32

Three of the fixes — storage, packaging and the oil switch — land within about a rupee of each other per sellable candle at these example loss rates. That is a common outcome, and it means the decision turns on which one your test shows actually cuts the losses, and on things the table cannot see: the look of the product, the work involved, and what customers expect.

The lidded salsa jar stands out because it lowers the material cost and closes the candle at the same time. But it is a different jar. It changes the look, possibly the diameter and fill, so the wick must be re-tested and the fill confirmed by a real pour before it replaces anything.

Common mistake. Putting a guessed loss rate for the new oil into the table. Until you have aged the new oil in your storage beside the old one, its loss rate is unknown, and the comparison is fiction.

What an oil switch really involves

Switching from Citrus Lemon to Zesty Lemon is not swapping like for like. Zesty Lemon's page describes a lemon top, a soft floral citrus heart and a subtle clean musk base; Citrus Lemon lists lemon and lime, grapefruit and orange, and mandarin. Your customers will notice. Zesty Lemon's page states up to 10% in soy and suggests starting at 8% and assessing after a 72-hour cure; it also needs its own wick test in your jar and your own storage test before you can claim it ages better.

So an oil switch carries hidden costs the table leaves out: sample oil, test candles, burn testing, new labels or descriptions, and the risk that the new oil drifts too. Price the test properly. Two 100 g packs of Zesty Lemon for test candles cost 2 × ₹360.00 = ₹720.00; a side-by-side storage test of both oils with a few candles each is small money against a wrong decision on 500 candles a month.

Test before you spend

1
Measure the store. Log the warehouse shelf with a min/max thermometer, so you know whether storage is even a credible fix.
2
Run one batch, three ways. Store matched candles in the current arrangement, in a cooler spot, and in the better packaging, side by side.
3
Add the alternative oil. Pour a few candles of the alternative oil in the same jar and store them in the current arrangement.
4
Score blind at your holding time. Compare every group against a fresh reference, including a burn test, and count how many would fail your check.
5
Fill in the table with real rates. Replace the example loss rates with your measured ones and recalculate.

If storage or packaging brings your loss rate down to where you are comfortable, keep your oil and your product. If neither does, the oil switch has earned its test — and only then its bulk order.

What the storage option really requires

A cooler room only helps if the candles actually go there and stay there. Price the whole change: rent or power for the room, moving stock, and the discipline of keeping finished goods out of the hot production area. If the fix depends on someone remembering every day, count on some slippage and test with that in mind. A packaging change, once specified, tends to be applied consistently; a storage rule needs supervising.

Buying sensibly after the decision

Whatever you choose, buy oil in quantities you will use while it is still testing acceptable in your storage. CSI lists no oil pack above 1 kg; larger quantities are multiple 1 kg packs or a quote on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926). CSI fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life and no storage temperature, so ask us for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and storage guidance for the specific oil and lot, in writing, before a large order. The 60-month shelf life on CSI 464 is a wax statement — it does not tell you how long your lemon candle stays bright.

Quantity is part of the cost too

Oil that sits for months in a warm store before it is poured is part of the same problem. If the reader buys 8 kg of Citrus Lemon to cover 500 candles a month at 16 g each (500 × 16 = 8,000 g), that is one month of cover at the reader's volume — reasonable. Buying four months at once means 32 kg of oil, 32 × ₹2,832.00 = ₹90,624.00, with the last kilograms opened in a hot month. Smaller, more frequent orders can beat one large one when the oil is volatile and the store is warm, even though CSI sells more with the big order.

And keep promises to customers modest: store cool, out of the sun, lid on. Never promise a candle will smell unchanged however long it is kept.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare storage costs with changing fragrance oil?
Work out cost per sellable candle for each option: materials plus any extra cost per candle, divided by one minus the share of candles you lose. Use loss rates measured in a side-by-side test.
What is cost per sellable candle?
Materials cost per candle divided by one minus your loss rate. At a 10% example loss, a ₹215.37 candle costs ₹215.37 ÷ 0.90 = ₹239.30 per candle you can actually sell.
Is it cheaper to switch to a stronger fragrance oil?
Not necessarily. A different oil changes the product, needs wick and storage testing, and may drift too. Test storage and packaging fixes first, then compare with real loss rates. Price the testing too.
Does CSI publish reject rates or shelf life for its oils?
No. CSI publishes no shelf life, storage temperature or loss data for its oils. Measure your own losses and ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for written guidance per oil and lot.
Can a lidded jar reduce fragrance loss in storage?
As general practice, a closed lid limits fragrance escaping. Test it in your conditions; a lidded jar can sometimes lower both material cost and loss, after a wick re-test. Confirm fill by a real pour.
Should I include packaging cost in candle costing?
Yes. CSI does not sell boxes or labels, so add your own packaging cost per candle, along with labour, shipping and GST, to the materials figure. Then work out cost per sellable candle.
