How Do I Diagnose an Oversized Candle Flame Using Wick Length, Wick Size, Melt-Pool Depth, Wax Consumption, Soot and Container Temperature?
शेयर करना
How do the scores give a verdict? Scores that vanish after the trim point to a trim issue; scores that change with the fan point to a draught. Pool depth and consumption still at 2 after the trim, in still air, is the oversized-wick signature. Soot or a big mushroom with a normal pool and normal consumption points to formulation (oil, load, dye), confirmed with a control candle.
What limits should I use? Your own, written before burn 1. Starting points: pool no deeper than about 1–1.5 cm (rule of thumb), consumption within about 10% of a reference candle, a clean soot card, glass under your own limit. None is an industry standard.
What does the protocol cost? A scale (₹354.00) and a cutter (₹177.00) if you have neither. Confirming an oversized C2 needs the Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00): ₹649.00 for all three. CSI has no half-sizes between its wicks.

The six measurements: what each can and cannot tell you
Each of the six measurements responds to more than one cause, which is why one alone misleads. A long wick makes the flame tall whatever its size. A draught makes soot whatever the wick. A heavy oil can mushroom a correctly sized wick. Only together, and only when you remove the burning variables in a second session, do they separate the four causes. The table is the reference for the rest of this page.
| Measurement | Tool and timing | A high reading suggests | On its own it can't tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wick length | Ruler, before lighting and at hour 4 (before trimming); note any carbon cap | A trim issue; or a wick burning slower than the wax falls; or carbon build-up | Whether the wick is the wrong size |
| 2. Wick size and fit | Record the exact wick, its rung, centring and whether it is upright; compare with any page positioning | A wick outside its own page's positioning, or off-centre | How it burns in your formula |
| 3. Pool depth | Bamboo skewer midway between wick and glass; wet length at hours 1–4 | A wick drawing more fuel than the jar needs | Whether the jar, a heavy oil or a hot room added to it |
| 4. Consumption | Scale: weigh before and after; grams ÷ hours | A hot, strong burn | Anything without a reference rate to compare it with |
| 5. Soot | White card held briefly above the flame at hours 1–4; rim photo after the session | Incomplete burning: long wick, draught, oversized wick or heavy formula | Which of those it is |
| 6. Glass temperature | Your own non-contact thermometer, same marked points, hour 4, each third | Heat building in the jar: oversized wick, flame drifting to a wall, the lower third | Anything if taken by touch, which you should never do |
Two of the six need a reference. Consumption means nothing without a rate to compare with: use an approved candle in a similar jar, or, if you have none, the one-rung-down candle in the confirmation test. CSI publishes no grams-per-hour figures for any wick. Glass temperature needs your own limit; CSI lists no non-contact thermometer and publishes no glass-temperature limit, and the "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording on our 150 g jar pages is a pour limit, not a burn rating. Flame height is deliberately not one of the six: it is the symptom you are diagnosing, and you log it on the sheet as the outcome. If you want the pass line for the flame itself, the impressive-versus-controlled criteria set it.
The recording sheet
One sheet per candle per session. The header records the conditions that can fake a result; the body records the six measurements and the flame itself. Fill it in at the time, not from memory at the end of the evening.

Limits and scores: 0, 1 or 2
Scoring makes six different units comparable. Every measurement gets 0 (within your limit), 1 (borderline, worth watching) or 2 (over your limit). The starting limits below are rules of thumb or in-house examples, labelled; change them to suit your range, but change them before the burn, and keep them the same for every candle you compare.
| Measurement | Score 0 | Score 1 | Score 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wick length at hour 4 | Close to the starting trim, no cap | Visibly longer, small cap | Long, a carbon ball wider than the wick |
| 2. Wick size and fit | Approved spec for this jar and formula, centred, upright | Not yet qualified for this jar (most first tests) | Off-centre or leaning; or a rung whose own page positions it above your jar |
| 3. Pool depth at hour 4 | About 1 cm or less | About 1–1.5 cm | Deeper than about 1.5 cm (rule of thumb) |
| 4. Grams per hour vs reference | Within 10% (in the worked example, up to 7.15 g/h) | 10–25% over (up to 8.125 g/h) | More than 25% over |
| 5. Soot | Clean card, clean rim | Faint grey card at hour 3–4 | Grey card, visible smoke, or a dark rim |
| 6. Glass at hour 4 | Well under your limit | At your limit | Over your limit, or the flame near the wall |
The percentages for consumption are an in-house example, not a standard; pick yours from how much variation you see between identical candles. If three candles of the same formula already differ by 10% between themselves, a 10% band will flag noise. The depth bands follow the common rule of thumb that a container pool of roughly 0.5–1 cm is a typical target and much deeper is a warning. There is deliberately no total score: the verdict comes from which measurements stay high, not how many points add up.
From scores to a verdict: the ranked causes
Here is the scoring rule. Score session 1 as found. Run session 2 trimmed to 5–6 mm in still air, with nothing else changed. If you suspect a draught, run a third session with the fan back on. Then read the pattern against the table. The ranking is our judgement of how often each cause explains an "oversized" flame, and it is also the cheapest order to rule them out.
| Verdict | Score pattern you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Trim issue (burning: wick length) | Session 1: length 2, soot 1–2, flame tall from the start. Session 2: length 0–1, soot 0, depth and g/h 0–1 | Session 2 itself: a 5–6 mm trim brings everything back inside limits | Trim instructions; and a 10 mm untrimmed start to check the wick has some margin | Nothing, or a cutter ₹177.00 |
| 2. Oversized wick (making: wick size) | Session 2 still: depth 2, g/h 2, glass 1–2; soot often 1; length 0–1 | Your wick against one CSI rung down, same formula, three candles each, full life | Step down one rung (Cotton Braided → C2 → C1, or to a C1 pair) | ₹118.00 (C1 20-pack, from C2) |
| 3. Draught (burning: the room) | Soot 1–2 and lean or one-sided pool with the fan on; soot 0 and steady flame with it off; depth and g/h barely change | Fan on versus off, same candle, same trim | Burn-location advice; check the wick still has margin under a fan | Nothing |
| 4. Formulation (making: oil, load, dye) | Session 2: soot 1–2 or a big cap (length 2) with depth 0–1 and g/h 0–1; worse in one scent or colour | Same wick and jar: your oil against a lighter oil or unscented; dyed against undyed | A per-fragrance or per-colour wick, or a lower load within both ceilings | Your own oils; a control oil from 50 g |
Mixed patterns are common. The worked example below is a trim issue and an oversized wick: the trim removed some of the problem and the depth and consumption that remained are the wick. That is exactly why the second session matters. Formulation is a tendency, not CSI data: vanilla-rich, resinous and dark gourmand oils commonly build more carbon than light oils, and loads move wicks both ways (lavender fine, vanilla huge, bigger flame after lowering the load). If the glass is the high score and nothing else is, check centring and the lower third before anything: a drifting flame heats one wall (pool depth as the candle deepens covers the depth mechanism).
Where this sits in the cluster: individual symptoms each have their own page, from the hour-three growth hub to too large after a correct trim and wax disappearing too fast; this protocol is the common method underneath them. The wider wick-symptom tree across tunnelling and drowning is the systematic diagnosis capstone.
Worked example: one candle, two sessions
A 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464) on an Eco C2 wick, in the reader's own jar, first third. The reader has an earlier approved candle in a similar jar that burns at 6.5 g an hour: that is the reference.
| Measurement | Session 1 reading | Score | Session 2 reading | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flame height h1 → h4 (outcome) | 4.2 → 5.8 cm, leaning | — | 3.4 → 4.9 cm, upright | — |
| 1. Wick length | 11 mm at start; 14 mm with a cap at h4 | 2 | 6 mm at start; 8 mm, small cap at h4 | 0 |
| 2. Wick size and fit | C2, centred, not yet qualified | 1 | same | 1 |
| 3. Pool depth h1 → h4 | 0.6 → 2.1 cm | 2 | 0.5 → 2.0 cm | 2 |
| 4. Grams per hour | 9.6 (48% over reference) | 2 | 9.1 (40% over) | 2 |
| 5. Soot | grey card from h3, dark rim patch on the fan side | 2 | faint card at h4, clean rim | 1 |
| 6. Glass at h4 | at the reader's limit | 1 | at the reader's limit | 1 |
Reading it. The trim and the still air took wick length from 2 to 0 and soot from 2 to 1, and they straightened the flame. That part was how the candle was burned. What stayed: a pool still reaching about 2 cm, consumption still 40% over the reference (36.4 g in four hours against about 26.0 g), the glass still at the reader's limit, and a flame still climbing towards 5 cm. That is the oversized-wick signature, and it is in the top third, where the candle is coolest. At 9.1 g an hour the 180 g above a 1 cm floor would also run out in about 19.8 hours against 27.7 for the reference rate. Verdict: trim issue plus oversized wick; confirm one rung down. The fan side's dark patch in session 1 is a note for the care label, not the cause.
Confirming the verdict: test plan and approval rule
For the oversized-wick verdict, the confirmation uses the series' default test candle, labelled: 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight), in your jar. Three arms: your current wick, one CSI rung down, and a C1 pair in case the single smaller wick tunnels. Three candles each, 9 in all, scored on the same sheet every session.

Buying for the protocol, and the step to production
Argued against our own interest: if your verdict is a trim issue or a draught, the right purchase is a ₹177.00 cutter or nothing, and a clear line on your care label. Only the oversized-wick and formulation verdicts lead to wicks. And measuring tools you already own (a 1 g kitchen scale, your own non-contact thermometer, a bamboo skewer) are as good as ours for this.
CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided, so the confirmation step is always Cotton Braided → C2, C2 → C1, or a C2 pair → a C1 pair. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, no smaller sized, tabbed wick than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. If your scores say C2 is oversized but C1 tunnels in your jar, that gap is real: test the C1 pair, adjust on the fragrance side, or ask us on WhatsApp.
| Verdict | You burn now | Buy | Pack and price | Per wick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trim issue or draught | any | Nothing, or a cutter | Candle Wick Cutter ₹177.00 | — |
| Oversized wick | C2 | C1 single and C1 pairs | C1 20 ₹118.00 | ₹5.90 (a pair ₹11.80) |
| Oversized wick | Cotton Braided | C2, C1 as contingency | C2 10 ₹94.40 + C1 20 ₹118.00 = ₹212.40 | ₹9.44 / ₹5.90 |
| Oversized wick | Performance Wooden | C2 and Cotton Braided (no narrower wood) | C2 10 ₹94.40 + Cotton Braided 10 ₹120.00 | ₹9.44 / ₹12.00 |
| Formulation | any | A control oil first; wicks only if one scent needs its own | your own oils | — |
The step to production quantity
Once an arm passes, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 250 single-wick candles a month with a 2% allowance is 255 C1 wicks; buy 2 × 100 + 50 + 20 = 270 for ₹1,593.00 (15 left). A 500-pack (₹2,950.00) costs the same ₹5.90 a wick and ties up ₹1,357.00 more cash. If the confirmation shows C2 was right after all, 260 C2 wicks are ₹2,454.40. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. Keep using the sheet in production: one candle per batch, one session, six scores, is a cheap early warning when a wick or oil lot changes (what to retest when the wick supplier changes).

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax and tools named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that two of the four verdicts need no new wicks, that tools you already own will do, that our bigger wick packs cost no less per wick, and that our range has no half-sizes and one wooden width.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the scale page's "grams or ounces" (no capacity or resolution stated) and the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke".
The pool-depth bands, trim length and 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb.
