CSI Wick Diagnosis · Still Too Large After Trimming
You trimmed it right and the flame is still too big. That points at the wick, once you have ruled out a draught and a wick that grows back during the burn. Here is how to turn "probably" into "proven", and the smallest CSI wick order that settles it.
2 of 3
confirmers (depth, grams per hour, soot) against one rung down = strongly oversized, our in-house rule · wicks from ₹94.40 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My flame is too large even after I trim the wick correctly. Does that strongly suggest the wick is oversized? Usually, yes, but "strongly" needs two exclusions and two confirmations. Rule out a draught (burn in still air) and a wick that grows back during the burn (re-measure it at hour two). If both are clear, a flame that is too large from a measured 5–6 mm trim points to a wick too powerful for the jar and formula.

How do I confirm it? Three independent signals, measured against one rung down in identical candles: pool depth at hour four (deeper than about 1–1.5 cm is a common warning), grams of wax lost per hour (weigh before and after), and soot on a white card. Two of the three pointing the same way, with the exclusions clear, is strong evidence.

What if the unscented candle burns normally? Then your oil or load is enlarging the flame. The wick is too strong for that formula, not for the jar, so test the oil and load as well as the wick.

What do I buy? One rung down, three candles, burned to the end beside three of your current wick: from C2, the Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00); from Cotton Braided, the Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40). A scale if you don't own one that reads to 1 g (₹354.00).
The short answer
Verdict: likely oversized, once two things are excluded: draught (repeat in still air) and length drift (exposed wick re-measured at hour two). A correct trim removes the commonest innocent cause; what remains is mostly the wick.
Confirmers: pool depth at four hours, grams per hour and soot, each compared with one rung down. Our in-house rule: gate passed + no drift + two of three confirmers = strongly oversized.
The control that splits wick from formula: two unscented candles on your current wick. Still too large unscented: the wick is oversized for the jar. Normal unscented: the oil or load is part of it.
The test: 8 candles: 3 current, 3 one rung down, 2 unscented controls; 4-hour sessions to the end; top, middle and bottom judged separately.
Trimmed, still too big: read the evidence Three illustrative candles, all trimmed to 5–6 mm. Not CSI test data. Candle A oversized Candle B draught Candle C long wick Gate: measured 5–6 mm trim, cap removed Still too large with fans, AC and coolers off Exposed wick still near 5–6 mm at hour two Pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm at hour four Grams per hour well above one rung down Soot on the white card (any side) Verdict Oversized: one rung down Draught: move it, retest Not size: construction or tab yes no "Strongly oversized" = rows 1–3 yes + 2 of 3 confirmers.
Three illustrative candles, all trimmed to 5–6 mm, read row by row. Candle A passes the gate, holds its wick length to hour two, and then shows all three confirmers (deep pool, fast wax loss, soot): oversized, test one rung down. Candle B calms down once the fans and AC are off, so its large flame and soot are a draught signature, not a wick verdict. Candle C keeps a normal pool and wax loss, but its wick has grown well past 5–6 mm by hour two: a construction or tab question, not a size one. The evidence rule is our in-house protocol, not an industry standard.
Straight answer
My candle flame is too large even after trimming the wick correctly. Does this strongly suggest the wick is oversized?
It suggests it, and with two checks and one test it can prove it. A correct trim (5–6 mm, cap removed, before lighting) removes the commonest innocent cause of a big flame, so what is left is mostly the wick. Two things can still fool you. A draught makes even a correct wick flare and smoke; repeat the burn in still air, fans and AC off, away from vents. Length drift means the wick does not stay at 5–6 mm. Re-measure the exposed wick at hour two: if it has grown well past your trim while the pool stays normal, the construction or the tab is the question, not the size. Clear both, and confirm with three signals compared against one rung down in identical candles: pool depth at hour four, grams lost per hour, and soot on a white card. Two of three pointing to excess is strong evidence; we treat that as "strongly oversized" in our own protocol. Add two unscented candles on your current wick to see whether the oil is part of it. Then approve one rung down only after three candles pass to the end of the jar. A flame that is large and smoking is a reason to stop that burn, not to watch it.
One line: still air and a hour-two re-measure first; then depth, grams per hour and soot against one rung down; two of three = oversized. From C2 the wicks cost ₹118.00.
The confirmation test, priced: from C2, one Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00, 17 spare); from Cotton Braided, one Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40, 7 spare). Add the weighing scale (₹354.00) only if yours can't read to 1 g. All in stock on 7 October 2026; the C1 10-pack is not.

The two exclusions: draught and length drift

A correct trim at lighting proves the wick started right. It doesn't prove it stayed right, or that the air was still.

Your symptom, stated exactly: you trimmed correctly before lighting, and the flame is still too large. That is different from a flame that is fine at first and grows by hour three: yours is too large despite the trim, perhaps from early in the burn. Before calling the wick oversized, check what "correctly" means. Measure from the wax surface to the wick tip with a ruler: 5–6 mm (one CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn", about 6.3 mm), a clean cut, no carbon cap left on. A ragged 9 mm "trim" is not a correct trim, and many large flames end right there.

Exclusion 1: draught

Moving air feeds a flame unevenly. It flares, leans, flickers and sheds soot, even on a correct wick. In Indian homes the usual culprits are ceiling fans, AC vents, coolers and open windows. Repeat the burn with all of them off, the door closed, and the candle away from vents. Watch for 30 seconds at each check: a steady, upright flame that is still too large is not a draught flame. If the flame calms in still air, you have a placement problem and a care-label line to write, not a wick to buy. The flicker-or-airflow post has the detailed version of this check.

Exclusion 2: length drift during the burn

Some wicks don't stay at their trim. If the wax level falls faster than the tip burns away, or the wick stands straight instead of curling into the flame and burning off, the exposed length grows, and so does the flame. To catch it, take a labelled measurement at hour two. On burn two, extinguish one candle at two hours, let it set, and measure the exposed wick above the solid surface with a ruler. Photograph a lit candle beside a ruler at the same time as a cross-check. Exposed wick close to your trim: no drift, carry on. Well past it (for example 10 mm or more, a figure you set) with a normal pool depth: the flame is large because the wick is long, and the question is construction or tab height, which the supplier-change post and the tall-flame, short-pool post touch from different sides. Drift with a deep pool is the oversized pattern again: the wax is disappearing faster than the wick can keep up.

Safety first, plainly: a large, steady flame after a correct trim heats the glass more than it should. Stop the session if the flame smokes continuously, approaches the glass, or the candle is burning near the base: extinguish it, let it set, trim and remove any cap before relighting. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer at fixed marked points (CSI lists none; our Pen Thermometer is for wax). The "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording on our 150 g jar pages is a pour limit, not a burn rating. No wick makes a candle "safe" or "soot-free".

What else makes a trimmed flame too large

Two causes are how the candle is burned. Three are how it was made. A correct trim leaves only five.

Ranked by likelihood once the trim is genuinely correct (our judgement). Signs are common observations, not CSI burn data.

Cause ranking · flame too large after a correct trim
Burning = how the candle is used · making = formulation and build · ₹ from CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Oversized wick (making: wick size) Steady, upright flame too large from early on; deep pool by hour four; fast wax loss; soot; warm glass high up Depth, grams per hour and soot against one rung down in identical candles Step down one CSI rung; three candles, full life ₹118.00 (C1 20, from C2) or ₹94.40 (C2 10, from Cotton Braided)
2. Oil or load enlarging the flame (making: oil, load) Too large scented, normal unscented on the same wick; sometimes a cap by hour two Two unscented candles on your current wick Test the load or oil within both ceilings; a per-fragrance wick Your own wax; no oil
3. Draught (burning: the room) Flare, flicker, lean; soot on one side; worse with the fan on Repeat in still air Placement; a care-label line Nothing
4. Length drift / construction (making: construction, tab) Exposed wick well past the trim by hour two; pool depth normal Hour-two measurement on a stopped candle A different construction, or check the tab sits flat and low ₹12.00 a wick to try a different braid
5. "Correct" trim that isn't (burning: trim) Measured 8–10 mm, ragged cut, cap left on Ruler from wax surface to tip before lighting Cut to 5–6 mm with a tool that reaches Nothing, or ₹177.00 / ₹295.00 cutters

Cause 2 is the one most people skip, and it changes the answer to your question. If the unscented candles burn at a sensible size on the same wick, the wick is oversized for that formula. The fix may then be a lower load or a different oil as much as a smaller wick. Load and oil effects are tendencies, not CSI data: heavier, resin- or vanilla-rich oils and higher loads commonly change how a wick burns, and the direction isn't always obvious (fine with lavender, huge with vanilla; bigger flame after lowering the load). Never test a load above the lower of your wax page's and oil page's stated maxima.

The three confirmers: depth, grams per hour, soot

One signal is an opinion. Three independent signals against a control are a verdict.

Each confirmer is measured on your current wick and on one rung down in an identical candle, on the same day, in the same still room. There are no CSI figures to compare with; the smaller wick is your yardstick.

The confirmers · how to measure, what counts
Thresholds are an in-house protocol you set before burn 1 · depth figures are rules of thumb · worked-example numbers are illustrative
Confirmer How Points to oversized when… Worked example
Pool depth Skewer straight down midway between wick and glass at hour four; read the wet length (method in the pool-depth post) Deeper than your limit (about 1–1.5 cm is a common rule of thumb) while one rung down stays inside it Current 1.8 cm; one down 0.9 cm
Grams per hour Weigh before and after each session on a scale that reads to 1 g; divide by hours Clearly faster than one rung down (set your margin in advance, for example 25% or more) Current 8.4 g/h, one down 5.6 g/h: 50% faster
Soot White card held briefly above the flame at hour three, photographed; rim checked after the session Visible soot in still air from a trimmed wick, where one rung down leaves the card clean Grey smudge on the current card; one down clean

Why three? Each confirmer has an innocent explanation on its own. A warm room deepens the pool. A heavy oil can soot. A thin-walled jar can speed up wax loss. Two or three moving together, against a control made the same day, are much harder to explain away. In the worked example the current wick lost about 33.6 g in a four-hour session against 22.4 g for one rung down. If that held across the jar, a 200 g candle would last roughly 23.8 hours instead of 35.7. The burn-time side of that is the wax-consumption post's job; here it is just a confirmer.

The evidence rule (ours, labelled)
Strongly oversized = the gate is passed (measured 5–6 mm trim, cap removed, still air) + no length drift at hour two + at least two of three confirmers pointing to excess against one rung down. Possibly oversized = gate passed, one confirmer: run the full test before deciding. Not the wick = the flame calms in still air, or drift explains it. This is our in-house protocol, not an industry standard; write your thresholds down before the first burn.

The eight-candle confirmation test

Three on your wick, three one rung down, two unscented. Same day, same room, to the end of the jar.

The candle is the series default, labelled: 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight) in your jar; the two unscented controls are 200 g of wax alone. Three candles per candidate is the minimum that separates a wick from one odd candle. Full life matters because a wick that seems fine at the top can over-power the bottom of the jar (why a two-hour test is not enough).

1
Pour eight candles togetherOne wax lot, one oil lot, same fill and pour temperature (your wax page's figure), every wick centred with a holder. Weigh each empty jar and each filled candle and write both on the base. Label them A1–A3 (current), B1–B3 (one rung down), U1–U2 (unscented, current wick).
2
Cure, then set the roomCure all eight together (3 days or more; many oil pages state 48–72 hours for soy). Burn in still air: fans and AC off, door closed, candles spaced well apart on heat-safe surfaces. Write the room temperature down.
3
Trim by ruler, weigh, light5–6 mm measured, cap removed, every session. Weigh before lighting.
4
Log at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hoursFlame height (ruler behind, photo), steadiness, soot card at hour three, pool depth at hour four, glass at hour four with your own non-contact thermometer. On burn two, stop one candle of each group at hour two for the length-drift measurement, then resume it next session.
5
Weigh after, and keep going to the endGrams lost ÷ hours for every session. Burn to about 1 cm of wax left (a common rule of thumb), with the top, middle and bottom thirds judged separately. Worked example: at 5.6 g an hour, 200 g is about 35.7 hours, roughly 9 four-hour sessions, so about 12 days with a 3-day cure.
6
Apply the evidence rule, then the approval ruleFirst decide whether the current wick is strongly oversized (above). Then approve the smaller rung only if it passes on its own terms (below). A smaller wick that stops the excess but tunnels is not a pass.
The approval rule (ours, labelled)
The one-rung-down wick is approved when all three candles, in the top, middle and bottom thirds, at four-hour sessions in still air: keep the flame inside your written band (2.5–5 cm is a common starting point) with no visible smoke; keep the pool at or under your depth limit at hour four; reach the glass by about hour three to four from burn two; and keep glass readings inside your own written limit, with the flame never near the wall. One failure in any candle fails it. This is an in-house protocol, not an industry standard.

The CSI wick ladder and the production step

Our ladder has three tabbed rungs and no half-steps. That keeps the test small, and it means we have to be honest about the gaps.

There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, and no narrower wooden wick. The untabbed options (Eco Braided Wicks by the metre, the Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs at ₹706.82, and the Eco Candle Wicks Loose, "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters") are cut-to-length constructions, not half-sizes. If your current wick is confirmed oversized and one rung down tunnels, that is the gap: ask us on WhatsApp, test a pair of smaller wicks (the hub's ladder includes one), or make the fine adjustment on the fragrance side.

Argued against our own interest: if the flame calmed in still air, or the length drifted, you don't need a smaller wick, and buying one muddies the next test. Bigger packs cost no less per wick, so they only tie up cash. The saving from stepping down is small (C2 → C1 ₹3.54 a candle; Cotton Braided → C2 ₹2.56), and never the reason to do it.

Production, after approval only. Worked example, labelled: 120 single-wick candles a month plus a 2% allowance is 123 wicks. On C1 that is 100 + 20 + 20 = 140 for ₹826.00; on C2, 100 + 20 + 10 = 130 for ₹1,227.20. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. If your next wick delivery burns differently, retest before production (compare wick lots).

Don't do this: don't step down two rungs at once because the flame "looks huge": you lose the comparison that tells you whether one rung was enough, and you invite tunnelling (the question the 7.5 cm one-or-two-sizes post answers for one jar). Don't hide an oversized wick behind trimming instructions; your trim was already correct, which is the point. Don't buy 1,000 wicks after one burn: ₹5,900.00 of C1 or ₹9,440.00 of C2 at the same per-wick price, decided by one evening on the top third, is the costliest shortcut in candle making.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026, and the wedding season commonly runs roughly November to February. The eight-candle test takes about 12 days. Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
The confirmation test is your current wick against one rung down: C1 if you are on C2, C2 if you are on Cotton Braided. In the text we captured, the page states no length, width or jar-diameter range for either size, and it claims "minimal soot or smoke"; a wick that is too large for its jar makes that claim irrelevant. C1 is ₹5.90 and C2 ₹9.44 a wick at every pack. Argued against our own interest: three wicks make the test, so the C1 20-pack (₹118.00) or C2 10-pack (₹94.40) is the whole purchase. The C1 10-pack is out of stock on 7 October 2026.

Candle Making Weighing Scale
Grams lost per hour is the one confirmer that does not depend on your eye. The page describes a digital scale whose display "shows measurements in grams or ounces"; in the text we captured it states no capacity or resolution. So check two things before you rely on it: that it reads in steps of 1 g or finer, and that it takes the weight of your filled jar. Weigh the empty jar once and record it. Limitation: CSI publishes no consumption figures, so grams per hour means something only against one rung down in an identical candle, never against a number from a chart.

tool · makes "trimmed correctly" true
Candle Wick Cutter | Candle Wick Trimmer
Your title rests on "correctly". A ruler and a clean 5–6 mm cut make it a fact rather than a feeling (the trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn", about 6.3 mm). The 5.5 cm-blade cutter reaches a wick that sits low in a jar after a few burns, which is exactly when a re-measure matters. Argued against our own interest: sharp scissors that reach the wick do the job; buy a cutter only if they don't. And if your candle still burns large after a measured 5–6 mm cut, no trimmer will fix it.

Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
If you are on Cotton Braided now, C2 is your one-down rung (card 1). This card is for two other cases. If you are moving off a Performance Wooden Wick (one CSI listing, no width options, ₹59.00 a wick in 10s), Cotton Braided and C2 are your cotton alternatives. And if check 3 points to construction rather than size, a different braid is what to try. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; at ₹12.00 a wick at every pack. Limitation: in a jar of 8 cm or less its own page positions it above your jar, so it is rarely the answer to an oversized flame there.

Skip for now: two rungs down at once; any pack over 20 before approval; a second oil while the wick question is open (the unscented control already tells you about the oil); and the ₹588.82 trimmer if a ₹177.00 or ₹295.00 cutter reaches your wick.

The CSI principle
A correct trim is the start of the diagnosis, not the end of it.
Still air and an hour-two re-measure exclude the innocent causes; depth, grams per hour and soot against one rung down confirm the guilty one. From C2, ₹118.00 in wicks settles it.
"If the flame is too big after a perfect trim, stop blaming the trim."

This page still tells you that a draught or a drifting wick may mean you need no wick at all, that scissors can replace our cutter, that four 500 g wax packs beat two 1 kg packs, and that we have no tabbed size between C1 and C2.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used; every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke", the Chunks page's "Clean burning with minimal soot", and the scale page, which states no capacity or resolution in the text we captured.

The 5–6 mm trim, the 2.5–5 cm flame band, the 1–1.5 cm depth limit and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The evidence rule, the approval rule and the 25% margin are labelled in-house protocols; the 8.4 and 5.6 g/h figures, depths and 120 candles a month are worked examples. Oil effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my candle flame still big after trimming the wick?
Most often the wick is too powerful for the jar and formula. A draught, a wick that grows back during the burn, or a heavy oil can do the same. Burn in still air, re-measure the wick at hour two, and pour an unscented candle on the same wick to separate them.
How do I know if my wick is oversized?
After a measured 5–6 mm trim in still air, compare it with one size smaller in identical candles. A deeper pool at hour four, faster wax loss per hour and soot on a white card, two of the three, point to oversized. Confirm over the full life of three candles.
How short should I trim a candle wick?
About 5–6 mm before each burn is common practice; one CSI trimmer page says 1/4 inch. Measure from the wax surface to the tip and remove any carbon cap.
How do I measure how fast my candle burns wax?
Weigh the candle before and after a session on a scale that reads to 1 g, then divide the grams lost by the hours burned. Compare it with one wick size smaller in an identical candle; there is no universal figure to compare with.
Should I go down one wick size or two?
One, tested beside your current wick, three candles each, to the end of the jar. Two sizes at once loses the comparison and risks tunnelling. Only test two down if one down has passed the exclusions and still burns too large.
Can fragrance oil make the flame bigger?
It can change how a wick burns in either direction; heavier oils and higher loads are common suspects. Pour two unscented candles on the same wick: if they burn normally, test the oil or load within both the wax and oil page maxima.
Too large after a correct trim
Exclude the draught and the drift, confirm with depth, grams per hour and soot, then test one CSI rung down to the end of the jar.
From C2 the wicks cost ₹118.00; from Cotton Braided, ₹94.40. If one rung down tunnels, tell us on WhatsApp and we will say plainly what we stock between the rungs, and what we don't.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster "Flame Is Too Large" (6901–6920) in the series on large flames, soot, smoke, mushrooming and wick purchase. It answers whether a flame that is too large after a correct trim means an oversized wick: two exclusions (draught, length drift), a cause-ranking table, three confirmers against one rung down with an in-house evidence rule, an eight-candle test with an approval rule, the CSI wick ladder and a production step.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Cinnamon Vanilla, Eco Candle Wicks, Eco Soy CSI 400, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles, Roasted Coffee Fragrance. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the burn and wick advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Subhankar Roy, Akanksha Sharma, Jinal Patel, Arminder Kaur, Punam Sarma. The reviews from Ashwini are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: "too large" and "after trimming the wick correctly" are the reader's description (title). The 200 g test candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax, load as a percentage of total weight) is the series default, labelled; Chunks' page states up to 13% load, a formulation limit, not a regulatory one. Trim 5–6 mm (one trimmer page says 1/4 inch ≈ 6.3 mm), the 2.5–5 cm flame band, the 1–1.5 cm depth limit and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The 10 mm drift figure, the 25% margin, 8.4 and 5.6 g/h, the 1.8 and 0.9 cm depths and 120 candles a month are worked examples or judgement. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact; the wedding season is a common pattern, not data.
