How Do I Make a Reed Diffuser Using 20% Fragrance Oil and 80% Base, and How Do I Check Whether the Formula Is Compatible?
शेयर करना
How do I check compatibility? Four gates: the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit; clarity in clear glass at mixing and 24 h; stability at 48 h, 7 days and a cool night; reeds in the bottle for 14–30 days.
What if it goes cloudy? Step the load down 5 points or try the base whose page names the oil's family. Never add water or alcohol.
What does the test cost? ₹2,632.80 in CSI materials for two bases, using your own bottles. See the kit.
Making 20% oil and 80% base — the right way to read it
CSI's base pages state fragrance load as a share of the total blend, so a 20% formula is 20 g of oil and 80 g of base in every 100 g of finished liquid. To make a batch of any size, multiply: oil = batch × 0.20, base = batch × 0.80. Weigh both into one tared beaker. The reason to weigh rather than pour 20 ml and 80 ml is that oil and base are different liquids, CSI publishes no density for either, and a volume recipe is only 20% by weight if both weigh the same per millilitre. The 100 ml method pillar shows that volume trap in numbers; formulating by weight makes the consistency case.
20% is a sensible place to check compatibility because it sits in the middle of every CSI base page's 10–30% range and is the load the Pure Performance page recommends. It is not automatically safe for every oil, and "compatible" is not one question but four. Each one has its own test, and a blend that passes three and fails the fourth is not compatible.
| Kind | The question | How you check it | Who can answer it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulatory | Is 20% within the oil's limit for reed diffusers? | Read the Category 10A limit on the oil's IFRA certificate | The certificate — CSI provides it on WhatsApp request; CSI publishes no IFRA % on product pages |
| Physical, at mixing | Does the oil fully dissolve in the base? | Clear-glass vials against white and black card | Only your test |
| Physical, over time | Does it stay dissolved through rest, days and cool nights? | The same vials at 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night | Only your test |
| In use | Does the blend climb and leave the reeds without clogging them? | Bottles with reeds: weight loss, reed colour and stickiness | Only your test |
Gate 1: the check you do before you mix
Two numbers set the ceiling before chemistry does. The base page's range — 10% to 30% on every CSI base page — is a formulation limit for that base. The oil's IFRA limit for the product category that covers reed diffusers is a safety limit for that oil. Reed diffusers are listed under IFRA Category 10A in current IFRA amendments, as suppliers' IFRA guides commonly summarise it; confirm against the category descriptions on the certificate itself. The lower of the two numbers wins.
CSI publishes no IFRA percentage for any oil on its product pages, and we will not guess one. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for the oil's IFRA certificate, find the Category 10A line, and write the limit on your formula sheet. If it is at or above 20%, Gate 1 is passed. If it is below 20%, your formula is the limit, not 20% — and nothing in the rest of this page changes that. Finding the maximum fragrance percentage using supplier data and IFRA Category 10A and using an oil at 25% when its certificate says less cover this gate in depth.
Gates 2 and 3: the clarity ladder
Do not test only 20%. Test 15%, 20% and 25% side by side in small clear-glass vials. If 20% hazes, you need to know whether 15% is clear; if 20% is clear, you want to know how much margin there is above it. A three-step ladder in both bases is six vials of 20 g each — small enough to cost little, large enough to see haze against a black card.
| Vial | Base | Load | Oil | Base weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| D1 | Depth | 15% | 3.0 g | 17.0 g |
| D2 | Depth | 20% | 4.0 g | 16.0 g |
| D3 | Depth | 25% | 5.0 g | 15.0 g |
| P1 | Pure Performance | 15% | 3.0 g | 17.0 g |
| P2 | Pure Performance | 20% | 4.0 g | 16.0 g |
| P3 | Pure Performance | 25% | 5.0 g | 15.0 g |
| Vial | Mixing | 24 h | 48 h | 7 days | Cool night | Layer / droplets / sediment | Pass? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D1 · 15% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| D2 · 20% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| D3 · 25% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| P1 · 15% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| P2 · 20% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| P3 · 25% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
A vial passes only if it scores 0 at every checkpoint, including the cool night. When 20% fails, the order of fixes is the one the CSI pages themselves give: reduce the fragrance percentage and retest — the Longevity page says so for heavy oils — or try the base whose page names the oil's family. Never add water, alcohol or anything else to clear a blend. Preventing cloudiness after adding fragrance oil and which base handles high loads without separation take the failure cases further.
Gate 4: compatible with the reeds
Gate 4 uses bottles you already own — no CSI bottle is needed for this test — filled to the same weighed amount. The example is your own bottle filled to 90 ml, which at an example 1.00 g/ml is 90 g (86 g–94 g at ±5% density). Make 2 bottles at 20% in each base, with 8 black fibre reeds each, and weigh them with reeds on day 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 30.
| Signal | What a pass looks like | What a fail looks like | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grams lost per day | Steady loss, similar from week 1 to week 4 | Loss falls steeply after week 1 while liquid remains | Weight every checkpoint |
| Reed tips | Even colour; dry to the touch at the top | Darkened, tacky or crusted tips | Photo against white card, day 7, 14, 30 |
| Liquid in the bottle | Clear, same as the vial | Haze, film or sediment developing | Photo against black card |
| Room score | Stable from day 3 to day 30 on your scale | Strong first days, then near zero | Your written 0–5 scale |
If the weight loss slows sharply while there is still plenty of liquid, and the reed tips have darkened or turned sticky, the blend is commonly described as clogging the reeds — heavier fragrance components left behind at the tips as the lighter parts evaporate. That is a compatibility failure even if the liquid is crystal clear. The first test is to flip or replace the reeds in one bottle and see whether the loss recovers. Reeds dark and sticky after a month and liquid level barely changing after two weeks are the diagnosis pages for that pattern.
The priced compatibility kit
Priced with listed, in-stock CSI sizes. The test needs 96.0 g of oil and 192.0 g of each base. Depth has no small size, so it is the 500 ml; Pure Performance is bought as 2 × 100 g, which is cheaper than its 500 ml for this quantity. Bottles are your own.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Depth Base | 192.0 g | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,099.00 | about 308.0 g at 1.00 g/ml |
| Pure Performance Base | 192.0 g | 2 × 100 g | ₹650.00 | 8.0 g |
| Cinnamon Vanilla (example oil) | 96.0 g | 1 × 100 g | ₹483.80 | 4.0 g |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (Black) | 32 reeds | 1 × pack of 50 | ₹400.00 | 18 reeds |
| Your own bottles and clear vials | 4 bottles, 6 vials | — | ₹0.00 | — |
| CSI total | ₹2,632.80 |
If you have no scale yet, add the Weighing Scale at ₹354.00; a scale that reads in whole grams is coarse for the 3.0 g of oil in a 15% vial, so check what steps its display moves in (the resolution is not published) and make the vials larger if needed. If you only want Gate 2 and 3 — vials, no bottles — the oil drops to 24.0 g and the reeds drop out.
What compatibility costs per bottle
Once a formula passes, the base choice also shows up in cost. For your own 90 ml bottle at 20% (18 g oil + 72 g base), with Cinnamon Vanilla at the 1 kg rate (₹4.55/g) and either base at its 500 ml price at an example 1.00 g/ml, the liquid costs ₹240.24 in Depth and ₹240.24 in Pure Performance — the same, because both 500 ml bottles are ₹1,099.00. The real cost decision is the load: stepping one bottle from 20% to 15% to clear a haze saves about ₹10.61 of liquid (oil replaced by base), which is why the clarity ladder includes 15%.
The decision rule
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate's Category 10A limit is below 20% | 20% is not allowed for this oil | Use the limit as your maximum; rerun the ladder below it |
| 20% vial hazes in both bases, 15% clear | Clarity ceiling between 15% and 20% | Formula 15%; buy nothing more yet |
| 20% hazes in Pure Performance, clear in Depth | The base matters for this oil | Depth Base 500 ml for this oil at 20% |
| 20% clear in both; 25% hazes | 20% has a 5-point margin below trouble | Keep 20%; choose the base by bottle results and cost |
| Vials clear, bottle reeds clog by day 14 | In-use failure | Test the other base in bottles, or 15%; see 7968 |
| All four gates pass in both bases | Compatible in either | Pure Performance — ₹325.00 for 100 g keeps small batches cheap |
Write the result on a formula sheet: oil, base, load, the date of each gate, the clarity ceiling and the certificate's limit. That sheet is what lets you reorder with confidence — and it is what the compatibility tests to run before buying 5 kg and deciding whether a cloudy formula is physically compatible build on.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer is "our base takes up to 30%". This page puts the oil's IFRA limit above the base's maximum, tells you to test the cheaper neutral base first and skip Depth if your oil passes in it, and says plainly that we publish no compatibility, solubility, throw or evaporation data for any base or oil.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). No density is published for any CSI base or oil: every ml-to-g conversion uses a labelled example density and shows ±5%; weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours. Clarity ladder: six vials of 20 g at 15/20/25% in two bases; checkpoints at mixing, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night (example: unheated room or a fridge door shelf for a few hours); 0–3 clarity scale. Gate 4: 2 bottles per base at 20%, reader's own bottles filled to an example 90 ml at 1.00 g/ml (86 g–94 g at ±5%), 8 black reeds each, weighed day 0–30. Liquid cost uses Cinnamon Vanilla at the 1 kg rate and bases in 500 ml at the example density. All of these are labelled working practices; there is no industry standard for diffuser clarity. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base is a "Professional … Reed & Car Diffuser Base", crystal clear per its page, used at 10–30% fragrance of the total blend with a 24–48 hour rest before bottling. Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", a "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", the example "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil", and "flip reeds after the first hour". Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand; "avoid light florals, fresh citrus, aquatics — use Lift Base"; slower "cold diffusion"; "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest"; "allow 2–3 hours before the first flip". Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity. Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils". Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky, light gourmand. Reed page — 20.3 cm long; "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance". Bottle page — variants 50 ml and 120 ml (its text says "50 and 100ml"); neck diameter, fill line and any reducer are not stated. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity result for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; no IFRA percentage for any oil; and no bulk base price. The five bases are told apart only by what their pages say they are for — never by a measured result. IFRA: reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A in current IFRA amendments as commonly summarised in suppliers' guides; read the Category 10A limit on the certificate for your oil, which CSI provides on WhatsApp request. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
