How Long Should You Stir Fragrance Oil Into Wax?

Is it two minutes of fast stirring or slow stirring? Slow. Both pages say slowly or gently. Fast stirring whips air into the wax and still misses the walls and the base; slow stirring that actually travels round the jug and across the bottom moves far more wax per revolution.
Does a powered mixer let me stir for less time? In practice yes, but there is no published figure to shorten to, so keep the two-minute clock and use the extra seconds on the walls and base. The CSI Pro Mixer page describes a stainless steel spring-coil whisk head that integrates fragrance oil into wax at 80–85°C, at ₹349.00.
What happens if I only stir for twenty seconds? Usually nothing you can see in the jug — and then jar-to-jar differences you cannot explain. The first jars off a 5 kg melt carry a different dose from the last ones, and you have ₹1,227.20 of oil in that melt distributed by luck.
The published figure: two minutes, and where it comes from
Two of CSI's soy grades publish a stirring time. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page, in its own step-by-step, says to allow the wax to reach 80–90°C, add the fragrance oil and stir slowly for 2 full minutes to ensure complete incorporation, and repeats the instruction in its FAQ. The Eco Soy CSI 400 page says that for the best hot throw you should add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C, stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly.
The other two container grades are quieter. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring and states a fragrance load of up to 10%, but publishes no stirring time. The Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 page gives a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C and a load of up to 13%, and publishes neither a fragrance-add temperature nor a stirring time. That is not a reason to invent one. Use the two minutes the other two pages publish, and if you want CSI's own guidance for those grades, ask on WhatsApp.

Two minutes is longer than it sounds. Stand at a bench with a stick in a jug of hot wax and count it out, and the first thing you learn is that your usual stir was about fifteen seconds. That gap — a hundred and five seconds — is the entire subject of this page.
What two minutes of stirring is actually doing to 16 g of oil
At an 8% load a 200 g candle carries 16 g of fragrance oil — one part oil to 12.5 parts wax. Pour that 16 g into a jug and it does what any light liquid does: it sits on top, spreads into a film, and starts to go in only where it is in contact with wax that is moving. Molten soy at 80–90°C is not water. It is closer to warm ghee, and in a still jug the oil would take a very long time to distribute on its own. Stirring is simply how you make every gram of wax pass through the oil-rich zone often enough to take its share.
Three things are happening at once during those two minutes, and they finish at different times. The oil film on the surface is broken up and carried under — that happens fast, usually inside the first fifteen seconds, which is exactly why a short stir looks successful. The oil is then dispersed through the bulk of the melt, which needs the stick to travel, not spin. And last, the oil has to reach the wax that never moves on its own: the layer clinging to the jug wall, the wax sitting on the base, and the seam where the two meet. That last third is what the second minute is for.
A useful analogy: stirring sugar into tea takes ten seconds because tea is thin and the sugar dissolves. Folding ghee through a large pot of halwa takes minutes because the medium is thick, the volume is large, and the only mixing that happens is the mixing you do. Wax is the halwa, not the tea.
There is one more reason the clock matters that has nothing to do with physics. Two minutes is long enough that you cannot do it absent-mindedly, so it becomes the moment in the batch when you look at what you have made — the colour of the melt, the smell coming off it, whether the Pen Thermometer still reads inside the window. Makers who time the stir catch more problems at the jug than makers who do not, simply because they are standing there.
Slow, not fast: the four passes that actually reach the whole melt
Both CSI pages that publish a time also publish an adverb: slowly on the Chunks page, gently on the Eco Soy CSI 400 page. That is not politeness. Fast stirring in a narrow jug spins the wax in the middle and leaves a ring of near-stationary wax around the outside, in the same way a cup of tea stirred hard has a still edge. It also folds air in. Air in the melt gives you surface pits, small craters and a dull top once the candle sets — cosmetic faults you will blame on pouring temperature for weeks.
The structure that works is four thirty-second passes, each aimed at a different part of the jug. Say them out loud the first few times: centre, walls, base, fold.
Pass one — the centre (0:00 to 0:30)
Slow circles through the middle of the melt, stick held vertically, moving at roughly one lap a second. This is the pass that takes the oil film off the surface and puts it into the body of the wax. It is also the only pass most makers ever do.
Pass two — the walls (0:30 to 1:00)
Run the stick or spatula around the inside of the jug, in contact with the metal, once every two or three seconds. Wall wax is the coolest wax in the vessel — it is losing heat to the room through the steel — and it is the wax most likely to be carrying its own share of oil badly. A Silicone Spatula at ₹175.82 does this better than a round stick because the flat edge sweeps rather than parts.
Pass three — the base and the seam (1:00 to 1:30)
Lay the stick flat and drag it across the bottom, then go round the seam where the base meets the wall. In a 600 ml pitcher this is a surprisingly large area and it is where the last of the unmixed wax hides. If you pour without doing this pass, the final jar off the melt gets it.
Pass four — the fold and the read (1:30 to 2:00)
Slow lifting folds through the whole volume: down one side, across the base, up the other. Then stop and look. Lift the stick clear and watch the wax run off it. You want a single, uniform, slightly glossy film — not beads, not two streams of different thickness, not a clear rivulet chasing an opaque one.
Stick, spatula or powered mixer — what each one is good and bad at
It is worth saying against CSI's own interest: no tool on this page will make your candle smell stronger than a bamboo stick used properly for two minutes. Mixing is a pass-or-fail step, not a scale. What better tools buy you is repeatability — the same stir on a Monday morning and a Friday night, on melt one and melt nine — and, at volume, the minutes back.

Two minutes at 200 g, two minutes at 5 kg — does the figure scale?
This is the part where the honest answer is a shrug with a method attached. CSI publishes one stirring time and does not publish a scaling rule, so nobody should hand you a formula that turns two minutes into four minutes twenty at 5 kg. What is observably true is that the job gets harder as the vessel gets deeper: the distance the stick has to travel grows faster than the volume, the surface-to-depth ratio falls, and the base of a 5 kg melter is a long way from the surface film.
So treat two minutes as a floor that is generous at 200 g, adequate at 1 kg, and the starting point at 5 kg and above — where the thing that ends the stir is the visual check, not the clock. The table below is a bench guide, not a published specification.

Read the fourth column before you decide two minutes is fussy. A 5 kg melt at 8% is carrying ₹1,227.20 of British Rose; a 10 kg melt is carrying ₹2,454.40. The stirring is free. The oil is not.
One practical alternative at volume, if you are not confident in a single large stir: split the fragrance. Add half the oil, stir a full two minutes, add the rest, stir a full two minutes. It costs you two extra minutes on a batch that already took an hour, and it halves the amount of oil any single pass has to distribute. This is general bench practice rather than a CSI instruction, and it is worth testing against your normal method before you adopt it for a whole season.
How under-stirring shows up later — and how to tell it from a load problem
This is the section that makes the two minutes worth reading about, because the symptoms of a short stir are shared with several other faults and the usual response is to change the wrong thing. The distinguishing feature of under-stirring is variation. A load that is too high, an oil that the wax cannot hold, a cure that is too short, a wick that is too small — all of those give you the same result in every jar from the melt. A short stir gives you jars that disagree with each other.

The last row is the cleanest diagnostic on this page, and it costs nothing to run. Number your jars as you pour them — a piece of masking tape and a marker — then cure the batch normally and burn jar 1 and the last jar side by side. If the last jar is noticeably weaker, or oilier, or duller on top, your stir is not reaching the base of the vessel. Add a full thirty seconds to pass three and pour the same batch again. This is a one-batch test using wax and oil you were going to use anyway; the only cost is two Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5.90 each and the discipline of labelling.
Cost, plainly: one 200 g jar at 8% on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with British Rose and an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) is ₹156.47 of materials — ₹101.48 of wax, ₹49.09 of oil and ₹5.90 of wick. Five jars off a 1 kg melt is ₹782.34. If one of those five is under-dosed enough that a customer notices, you have not lost ₹156.47; you have lost the customer and the batch's reputation, and you have no way of knowing which jar it was.
The two-minute stir, step by step
Four steps, about four minutes of bench time including the weighing, repeated identically every batch. If you write the stir time into your batch log next to the add temperature, you will have the two most useful numbers in candle making recorded for every pour you have ever done, and a real answer the next time a batch behaves oddly.
Dye, additives and a second fragrance: what else goes in, and when
The two-minute figure is for fragrance. It is not a budget you can spend on fragrance, dye and an additive at once. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page runs its own sequence — melt fully, add dye at full melt temperature and stir until evenly distributed, then let the wax fall to 80–90°C and add the fragrance with the 2-minute stir. Dye at full melt gets its own stir; fragrance at the lower temperature gets the published two minutes. Follow the sequence printed on the grade you are actually using.
Additives come first. The Vybar Additive page is explicit about it: add Vybar directly to the melted wax and stir thoroughly until fully dissolved, and it says this must be done before adding fragrance or colour. The same page gives a dose of 0.5–2% of total wax weight, with 0.5–1% recommended for soy. On a 200 g candle that is 1 g to 2 g. Vybar is optional and it is not a fix for a short stir — it will not distribute oil you never carried to the base of the jug.
If you are blending two fragrance oils, blend them in the bottle or the weighing cup first, then add the blend as one liquid and give it the full two minutes. Adding one oil, stirring, then adding the second and stirring again doubles the time in the window and gives the first oil a longer exposure to heat than the second — which is exactly the kind of small asymmetry that makes a blend behave differently from batch to batch.
Two minutes in an Indian workshop: heat, humidity and the last melt of the day
In a 40°C-plus workshop in Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur, the melt holds its window comfortably through a two-minute stir and often overshoots it — the risk there is pouring too hot rather than stirring too cold, and the thermometer earns its price. The practical Indian summer problem with the fragrance stage is not the stir at all; it is that the whole bench is warm, so the wax stays liquid longer after the pour and any fault you did leave in it has more time to show on the surface.
The opposite problem is real too. One CSI customer describes exactly it in a review of the Mini Electric Wax Melter: living in a cold region, the temperature would drop within seconds, making it difficult to hold a working temperature at all. In a hill-station studio, an air-conditioned Bengaluru room at 18°C, or a January bench in the north, a 600 ml steel jug on a stone counter can lose the window inside a two-minute stir. Pre-warm the vessel, keep it off cold stone, and if it is a recurring fight, a heated melter solves it permanently.
Monsoon adds a third wrinkle, and it is a handling one rather than a mixing one. In Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata, a cold steel pitcher taken out of a cupboard into a humid room can carry condensation. Water and molten wax are a bad combination — spitting at the least, cloudiness at worst — so wipe the vessel dry and let it come up to room temperature before the wax goes in. None of this changes the two minutes. It changes whether the two minutes happen at the right temperature.
The last Indian reality is the festive one. Between late September and the first week of November most small candle businesses run more melts in a fortnight than in the rest of the quarter, and the fragrance stage is the step that quietly gets compressed. If your Diwali run is 10 kg poured as ten 1 kg melts, the entire stirring commitment for the season's biggest batch is twenty minutes. Put it in the plan as twenty minutes rather than letting it be stolen from the end of each melt.
