How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Pillar Candles?
शेयर करना
What is the maximum fragrance load for pillar wax? CSI does not publish one for Soy Pillar Wax, beeswax, paraffin or microcrystalline wax. Check the wax's product page or ask us on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. Until you have it, 6–10% is a labelled test range, not a spec, and nothing on this page goes above 13%.
Is the percentage of the wax or of the whole candle? On this page it is always of the finished candle. 8 g of oil per 100 g of wax is 7.41% of the total, not 8%. Per cent of what? converts between the two.
What happens if I add too much oil to a pillar? In general candle-making practice: a soft or greasy surface, beads of oil (sweating), poor release from the mould and sometimes mottling. These are effects to test for, not measured CSI results. Reading the signs has a scoring sheet.
Grams of oil by pillar weight and load
Fragrance load in this series is always a share of the finished candle's total weight: oil = W × L, and wax = W − oil. The table does the sums for two illustrative pillar weights, 250 g and 400 g, from 6% to 10% in one-point steps. The last two columns show what the oil and the whole pillar cost with Gardenia (a mid-priced white floral) at its 100 g rate, in Soy Pillar Wax at ₹0.60 a gram with one braided wick at ₹12.00.
| Pillar | Load | Oil | Wax | Oil cost | Pillar material cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 g (illustrative) | 6% | 15.0 g | 235.0 g | ₹64.95 | ₹217.95 |
| 250 g (illustrative) | 7% | 17.5 g | 232.5 g | ₹75.78 | ₹227.28 |
| 250 g (illustrative) | 8% | 20.0 g | 230.0 g | ₹86.60 | ₹236.60 |
| 250 g (illustrative) | 9% | 22.5 g | 227.5 g | ₹97.42 | ₹245.93 |
| 250 g (illustrative) | 10% | 25.0 g | 225.0 g | ₹108.25 | ₹255.25 |
| 400 g (illustrative) | 6% | 24.0 g | 376.0 g | ₹103.92 | ₹341.52 |
| 400 g (illustrative) | 7% | 28.0 g | 372.0 g | ₹121.24 | ₹356.44 |
| 400 g (illustrative) | 8% | 32.0 g | 368.0 g | ₹138.56 | ₹371.36 |
| 400 g (illustrative) | 9% | 36.0 g | 364.0 g | ₹155.88 | ₹386.28 |
| 400 g (illustrative) | 10% | 40.0 g | 360.0 g | ₹173.20 | ₹401.20 |
Two things to note. First, the pillar weight is yours to measure. CSI's Pillar Candle Mould has published dimensions (Tall 11.2 × 6.3 cm, Short 8.6 × 6.5 cm) but no published fill weight, and neither do the ribbed, daisy or bubble moulds. Weigh a plain wax fill, because wax is lighter than water and a water fill will overstate it. Then use that figure as W. Second, the steps are small in grams and large in effect. On a 250 g pillar, each percentage point is only 2.5 g of oil, less than a teaspoon. A careless pour can move a pillar a whole point, so weigh the oil, don't measure it by eye.
Per cent of what? Total weight versus grams per 100 g of wax
Much of the confusion about load comes from two different conventions. Some makers mean "per cent of the finished candle", as this cluster does. Others mean "grams of oil added to every 100 g of wax". The two give different numbers for the same pillar, and the gap widens as the load rises. If you are following a recipe, find out which convention it uses before you copy the number.
| Recipe says | That is, of the finished candle | If you meant % of total | Grams per 100 g wax for that % of total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 g oil per 100 g wax | 4.76% | 5% | 5.26 g per 100 g wax |
| 6 g oil per 100 g wax | 5.66% | 6% | 6.38 g per 100 g wax |
| 8 g oil per 100 g wax | 7.41% | 8% | 8.70 g per 100 g wax |
| 10 g oil per 100 g wax | 9.09% | 10% | 11.11 g per 100 g wax |
So "10 g per 100 g of wax" is 9.09% of the finished pillar, and "10% of the pillar" is 11.11 g per 100 g of wax. Neither is wrong, but mixing them is. Pick the total-weight convention, write it on your recipe sheet, and convert anything you read elsewhere before you use it. Every figure in the pillar and mould cluster — Best Fragrance Oils for Pillar Candles, Buy Fragrance Oils for Pillar Candle Making, Bulk Fragrance Oils for Pillar Candle Manufacturing — uses total weight.
Why there is no single number for pillar wax
A fragrance ceiling is a wax maker's stated formulation maximum: the most oil the wax is designed to hold and release well. CSI quotes exactly two in this series, both for container waxes. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%. They are formulation limits, not regulatory ones. For Soy Pillar Wax, Beeswax Pellets, Fully Refined Paraffin and Microcrystalline Wax, no ceiling is in the data we publish. It would be easy to copy the container figure across. It would also be wrong. A pillar is a free-standing body with no jar, so the oil it can hold without sweating or softening is a different question.
So the order of authority is simple. First, the wax's product page, or the wax maker's stated maximum. Ask us on WhatsApp and we will pass on what is available. Second, your own ladder test in your mould and your climate. Third, general practice ranges like 6–10%, which are only a starting point for that test. And under all of them sits a hard line we apply everywhere in this series: never above 13%.
Running the ladder
A ladder test pours the same pillar at several loads side by side, so the only difference is the oil. It takes a week or two because pillars need a cure and a shelf test. It saves you from finding the answer on a customer's table.
Reading the signs: a structural scoring sheet
Use this sheet for each pillar on the ladder. Score 2 for a clear pass, 1 for borderline and 0 for a fail. These signs are general candle-making practice to test for. They are not CSI measurements, and a fail can have more than one cause, so change one thing at a time.
| Check | When | 2 = pass | 0 = fail | A fail commonly points to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Release | At demould | Slides out, sharp edges | Drags, tears, sticks | Load too high, demoulded too early, wax too soft |
| Surface, cool room | Day 1 and day 7 | Dry to a tissue | Oily mark, greasy film | More oil than the wax holds comfortably |
| Surface, warm shelf | Day 14 | Still dry | Beads of oil (sweating) | Load near the limit for your climate |
| Firmness | Day 7 | Hard, holds a fingernail press | Soft, dents easily | Load too high or wax unsuited to pillars |
| Colour | Day 14 in light | As poured | Yellowing, browning, mottling | Oil tint (vanilla-rich is a common example) or excess oil |
| Burn | After cure | Even pool, steady flame | Drowned wick, flooding, weak scent | Wick size, load or cure — test one at a time |
What each percentage point costs
Load is a structure decision first and a cost decision second, but the cost is real. On a 250 g pillar each point is 2.5 g of oil; on a 400 g pillar, 4 g. The table prices a point for three oils across the catalogue's tiers, and what that point costs across 100 pillars.
| Oil | One point, 250 g pillar (2.5 g) | One point, 400 g pillar (4 g) | One point × 100 pillars of 400 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | ₹8.85 | ₹14.16 | ₹1,416.00 |
| Gardenia | ₹10.82 | ₹17.32 | ₹1,732.00 |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | ₹14.75 | ₹23.60 | ₹2,360.00 |
Running a whole ladder costs little in any tier. The 60 g for three 250 g pillars costs ₹212.40 with Eucalyptus Spearmint, ₹259.80 with Gardenia and ₹354.00 with Dark Vanilla Oud, at 100 g rates. Moving a 100-pillar line of 400 g pillars from 8% to 10% adds 8 g of oil to each pillar, which is ₹4,720.00 with Dark Vanilla Oud. That is worth spending only if the ladder showed the pillar needs it and passes at it.
| Oil | ₹/g at 100 g | 6% (15 g) | 8% (20 g) | 10% (25 g) | Ladder oil at 100 g rate | To buy: 50 g + 15 g |

If your question is specifically about decorative moulded pieces with fine detail, I'm Making Decorative Mould Candles — How Much Fragrance Oil Can I Add Without Affecting the Candle Structure? takes the structural question further. For oils to put on the ladder in the first place, see Best Fragrance Oils for Pillar Candles and Best Fragrance Oils for Moulded Candles. For scent comparisons once the load is fixed, see Strong Fragrance Oils for Scented Mould Candles. For the same question in container waxes, where ceilings are published, see Fragrance Oils for Soy Candles at 6–8% Fragrance Load. Once the load is fixed, Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oil for Pillar and Mould Candle Making covers buying the winning oil by the kilo, and Fragrance Oils for Silicone Mould Candles covers the same ladder in silicone moulds.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A page about how much oil to use is one where a supplier gains by suggesting more. We don't publish a ceiling for our pillar wax, so this page does not invent one. It gives you the arithmetic, a labelled ladder and a scoring sheet, and tells you to stop at the lowest load your room needs.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Mould and sealer prices come from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull, and wick and tool prices from Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026, rechecked on 25 September. Grams, conversions and costs are plain arithmetic, shown to one or two decimals.
The 250 g and 400 g pillars are illustrative; mould volumes are not published. 6%, 8% and 10% are a labelled test ladder, not a ceiling; the only ceilings CSI quotes are 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464), for container wax. Structural signs are general candle-making practice. For the wax maker's stated maximum, MSDS or IFRA documents, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
