I Already Have Oud and Sandalwood — Which Fresher Fragrance Oil Would Balance My Candle Range for Customers Who Don't Like Heavy Woody Scents?
शेयर करना
Which "fresh" oils are secretly woody? Mint Sandalwood states it contains sandalwood, amber and woody materials. Blue Ocean publishes driftwood in the base. Lemongrass and Lime publishes subtle cedarwood.
Does the fresh candle cost less to make? Yes, materially. At the same 14.8 g, Citrus Lemon puts ₹52.81 less fragrance into a candle than Royal Oud. That is a production fact, not a sales prediction.
Will a fresh candle sell to my woody customers' friends? Nobody can tell you — no published demand data exists. What a fresh SKU does is give a visitor who dislikes heavy scents something to pick up instead of nothing.
Why "fresher" is a different purchase
A range of oud and sandalwood is a coherent range, and the instinct when it feels narrow is to add a third woody — a cedarwood, a vetiver, a smoked something. That is a deepening purchase: it gives an existing customer a second reason to buy. The purchase in this question is the opposite kind. It is for the person who picks up your oud candle, likes the jar, smells it and puts it down. Today that person leaves with nothing.
Which means the brief for this oil is unusually strict. It has to be noticeably not-woody, which is a higher bar than "fresh" as a marketing word. Fresh describes a top note, and top notes are gone in twenty minutes. If the base is driftwood or cedarwood, your not-woody candle turns into a mild woody candle by the time the melt pool is full — and the customer you bought it for is the one who will notice.
The good news is that the published data supports a proper screen. Most CSI fragrance pages name their note tiers explicitly, and 62 of the fragrance pages publish a vanillin or discolouration position. So you can check for hidden wood on paper before spending anything — and you can check cost per candle at the same time, which turns out to point in the same direction.
The hidden-wood screen
Run every candidate through one question: does any tier on the product page name wood, cedarwood, driftwood, sandalwood or amber? Here is the whole fresh end of CSI's in-stock range, screened. The verdict column is about one thing only — whether the oil answers a "too heavy, too woody" objection.
| Oil · 1 kg | Published tiers or profile | Any wood on the page? | Vanillin | Flash point | Oil per candle | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon · ₹2,832 | Lemon and lime · grapefruit and orange · tangy mandarin | None | Approximately 0% | None stated | ₹41.91 | Passes — citrus in every tier |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint · ₹3,068 | Crisp eucalyptus with a spearmint finish; single-note type; Fresh / Herbal / Spa | None | 0% — zero risk of discoloration | 199°C | ₹45.41 | Passes — the furthest thing from woody in tone |
| Zesty Lemon · ₹3,400 | Fresh lemon peel and citrus zest · soft floral citrus nuance · very subtle clean musk | None | 0% — zero discoloration risk | Available on request via SDS | ₹50.32 | Passes — musk is not wood; the page says the lemon stays lemon |
| Verbena · ₹4,720 | Crisp, clean, citrus-forward single note — sharp lemony zest with subtle herbaceous undertones | None | 0% — no discoloration risk | 200°C | ₹69.86 | Passes — drier and greener than a straight lemon |
| Blue Ocean · ₹4,956 | Sea salt and ozone · jasmine and lily of the valley · driftwood and musk | Yes — driftwood in the base | 0% — no discolouration | 143°C | ₹73.35 | Partial — buy it for the aquatic opening, not as a non-woody answer |
| Lemongrass and Lime · ₹5,200 | Lime and lemongrass · ginger and herbal notes · subtle cedarwood and soft musk | Yes — cedarwood in the base | No figure published | None stated | ₹76.96 | Partial — a bridge between your woods and a citrus, not an escape from them |
| Mint Sandalwood · ₹4,999 | Page states sandalwood, amber and woody materials; load 7–10%, start at 7% | Yes — sandalwood and amber | Moderate cream-to-amber toning possible in white wax | > 93°C threshold only | ₹73.99 | Fails the brief — a woody oil with mint on top |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom · ₹4,842 | Sweet cherry and pink petals · rose and jasmine · sandalwood and musk | Yes — sandalwood in the base | No figure published | None stated | ₹71.66 | Fails the brief — lands on the wood you already own |
| Saffron Cedarwood · ₹6,867.60 | Citrus and cardamom · palo santo, saffron, violet · wood, sandalwood, smoke and amber | Yes — four woody or resinous materials | No figure published | None stated | ₹101.64 at the 1 kg rung | Fails the brief — a citrus top on a heavier base than your sandalwood |
Three oils pass cleanly and a fourth, Verbena, passes at a higher cost per candle. Note what the screen does not do: it does not say Blue Ocean or Lemongrass and Lime are poor oils. Both are interesting, both state 0% vanillin or publish no figure, and both would widen a range in other ways. They simply do not answer the objection in the question, because the objection is about what the room smells like an hour in — and an hour in, you are smelling the base.
The cost-per-candle ladder
Now put the fresh end next to what you already pour. This is the unit that matters when you are deciding whether a new SKU is affordable: not the price of the kilo, but what the oil costs inside one finished candle you can sell.
| Oil | 1 kg | Oil per candle | Difference vs Citrus Lemon at ₹41.91 | Candles per kilo at 14.8 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Santal Noir | ₹9,120 | ₹134.98 | ₹93.07 more | ≈67 |
| White Royal Oud | ₹8,103 | ₹119.92 | ₹78.01 more | ≈67 |
| Royal Oud | ₹6,400 | ₹94.72 | ₹52.81 more | ≈67 |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | ₹5,691 | ₹84.23 | ₹42.32 more | ≈67 |
| Sandalwood | ₹5,026.80 | ₹74.40 | ₹32.49 more | ≈67 |
| Woody Oud | ₹4,531.20 | ₹67.06 | ₹25.15 more | ≈67 |
| Zesty Lemon | ₹3,400 | ₹50.32 | ₹8.41 more | ≈67 |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | ₹3,068 | ₹45.41 | ₹3.50 more | ≈67 |
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2,832 | ₹41.91 | — | ≈67 |
Two things worth sitting with. First, the spread is large: ₹93.07 per candle between the dearest in-stock santal and the cheapest citrus, on the same 14.8 g of oil in the same jar. If your oud candle and your lemon candle sell at the same price, the lemon candle keeps ₹52.81 more of it — and if you have been pricing everything from the oud candle's cost, the fresh SKU is quietly your best-margin line from day one. Second, a whole kilo of Eucalyptus Spearmint at ₹3,068 costs less than the fragrance for 33 Royal Oud candles. Entering a new family here is cheap in a way that deepening your existing one is not.
None of that is a claim about demand. A fresh candle may sit on your shelf for a year — that is a question your own sell-through answers, not this page. What the arithmetic does establish is that the experiment is small: a 100 g bottle of Citrus Lemon at ₹300 makes about six candles and costs less than a single Santal Noir candle's fragrance and jar together. The cost of finding out is not the obstacle.
Three fresh oils, costed
Three cards: the two cleanest answers to the objection and one honest in-between for a maker who would rather bridge than switch. Each shows every listed rung and the candles it covers at 14.8 g.

The pack ladder, checked per oil
CSI's largest listed fragrance pack is 1 kg; anything above that is a quote and this guide will not invent one. Below 1 kg the ladder behaves differently on every oil in this shortlist, and on one of them it runs backwards. Divide, do not assume.
| Oil | 50 g per gram | 100 g per gram | 500 g per gram | 1 kg per gram | Cheapest gram | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹3.40 | ₹3.00 | ₹2.84 | ₹2.832 | 1 kg | Steps down steadily; kilo saves ₹8 over two 500 g |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | ₹4.248 | ₹3.54 | ₹3.304 | ₹3.068 | 1 kg | The real volume reward here — ₹236 saved over two 500 g |
| Zesty Lemon | ₹4.00 | ₹3.60 | ₹3.44 | ₹3.40 | 1 kg | Modest; kilo saves ₹40 over two 500 g |
| Verbena | ₹6.608 | ₹5.90 | ₹4.956 | ₹4.72 | 1 kg | Steps down sharply; kilo saves ₹236 over two 500 g |
| Blue Ocean | ₹4.94 | ₹4.95 | ₹4.956 | ₹4.956 | 50 g | Inverted — twenty 50 g bottles are ₹16 cheaper than the kilo |
| Lemongrass and Lime | ₹6.60 | ₹5.90 | ₹5.20 | ₹5.20 | 500 g or 1 kg (identical) | Flat above 500 g — buy what you will pour |
For a profile that is new to your range, the pack decision is mostly about months of cover rather than pennies per gram. One kilo of a fresh oil is about 67 candles. If the fresh candle is one of four scents and you sell forty candles a month in total, that is ten a month of it, so the kilo is nearly seven months of stock. The 500 g pack is about 33 candles and three and a half months, and the step up later costs ₹8 to ₹236 depending on the oil. Start at 100 g if you have never poured a citrus or a mint in your wax at all — ₹300 for Citrus Lemon, ₹354 for Eucalyptus Spearmint, ₹360 for Zesty Lemon.
Adding the fresh SKU without breaking the range
A fresh candle in a woody range needs a little care at the bench and a little care on the shelf, because the two ends behave differently in wax and read differently to a customer. Here is the sequence.
What one fresh oil does not fix
Adding a citrus or a mint solves exactly one problem: a visitor who dislikes heavy scents now has something to buy. It does not make your range broad, and it is worth being clear about what is still missing after the purchase.
| Not covered | An in-stock CSI example | 1 kg | Oil per candle | Why it is a separate decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gourmand / sweet | Chocolate Fudge | ₹3,964.80 | ₹58.68 | A different objection entirely — and it brings a colour constraint, since its page warns vanillin can yellow light wax over time |
| Floral | British Rose | ₹3,068 | ₹45.41 | 0% vanillin and flashpoint 192°C; nothing on your shelf is soft or romantic |
| Fruity | Peach Melon Berry | ₹4,177.20 | ₹61.82 | Check the base before counting it as new — fruity oils frequently sit on vanilla or wood |
| Spiced | Apple Cinnamon | ₹4,743.60 | ₹70.21 | Warm without being woody, but its page states vanillin present — test in white wax |
And one thing a fresh oil will not fix is a woody candle that is too strong rather than too woody. Those are different complaints with different answers: the first is a selection question, the second is a load and wick question. If the feedback you are getting is that your oud candle overwhelms a small room, the lever is the load inside the stated ceiling, the vessel size and the wick — not a second oil. That mechanism is in how to make candles smell strong without exceeding the safe fragrance load, and the wick side in wrong wick size is killing your hot throw.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The oils that pass this screen are among the cheapest kilos we list, and the ones that fail it — mint sandalwood, saffron cedarwood, santal — are dearer. We would make more by sending you to those. The screen is published here because a maker who answers a real customer objection sells more candles, and a maker who buys a woody oil with mint on top answers nothing.
Every price, pack size, stock position and specification here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing and availability always take precedence — Blue Ocean's 15 g rung is sold out as published, and Royal Oud's 100 g rung is sold out while its 500 g and 1 kg rungs are listed. Notes, family wording, stated loads, cure guidance, vanillin positions and flash points are quoted only where the page states them. Where a page declines or is silent — Zesty Lemon states its flash point is available on request via the SDS, and Citrus Lemon and Lemongrass and Lime publish none — this guide says so instead of substituting a figure. A threshold such as "flash point > 93°C" is not a measured value and is not treated as one. No claim is made about which family or scent sells best; no such data is published by CSI.
