Fragrance Change · Small Blend Change
Ten per cent of the blend is only 0.8% of the candle — 1.6 g in a 200 g candle at 8%. That makes a change less likely to matter, not certain not to. Potent components can lead the scent, and a candle approved near its limits has little room for any change.
1.6 g
of the changed component in a 200 g candle at an 8% blend load — 0.8% of the candle · small in grams, not automatically small in effect
Quick answers — read this first
Can 10% of a blend change hot throw? Yes. Small components can lead the scent — a bright top note especially — so throw character and strength can shift. Confirm it blind against the old blend.

And wick behaviour? It can, because the fuel's composition changed, but it is less likely with a small change in a candle that had margin. The margin check decides how deep to test.

How small is the change in grams? 1.6 g per 200 g candle at 8% — 0.8% of the candle, 160 g per 100 candles. See the zoom table.

What does the test cost? For a component swap: one 15 g bottle of Citrus Lemon, ₹81.42. Full six-candle kit from scratch ₹2,279.42.
The short answer
Answer: Partly — retest these: scent character (REPEAT), throw and burn lines (CONFIRM), storage and documents if a new material came in. Depth depends on the approved candle's margin.
Maths: Component = blend × share = (200 g × 8%) × 10% = 1.6 g, 0.8% of the candle. At 6% and 10% loads: 1.2 g and 2 g.
Rule: Small change + wide margin → CONFIRM (3 + 3, four cycles, one pair full life). Thin margin or no record → full life on all six and a 7% rung — 4826.
"Only 10% of the blend": how small that is — and where it sits 200 g candle · blend at 8% · one component at 10% of the blend · oil = W × L, component = blend × share 200 g candle: 184 g wax 16 g Lemongrass and Lime 60% · 9.6 g Euc. Spearmint 30% · 4.8 g 1.6 g The changed 10%: 1.6 g per candle Verbena → Citrus Lemon, or 10 points moved between oils = 0.8% of the candle Small in grams. Not automatically small in effect: a potent or top-heavy material can lead the scent, and a candle approved close to its limits has little room for any change.
Top: the 200 g candle, of which 16 g is blend at 8%. Middle: the blend by weight, with the 10% component in black. Bottom: that component on its own — 1.6 g, or 0.8% of the candle. The grams say a problem is unlikely; they cannot say it is impossible, because potency and the approved candle's margin are not visible in grams.
Straight answer
I changed only 10% of my fragrance blend — can such a small modification still change hot throw or wick behaviour?
Yes, it can — so partly retest. In the candle, 10% of the blend is small: at 8% in a 200 g candle it is 16 g × 10% = 1.6 g, just 0.8% of the candle. That makes a problem less likely, not impossible, for two reasons the grams cannot show. Fragrance materials are not equally potent, so a small component — a bright top note especially — can change the scent's character and perceived throw. And the approved candle may have had little room: a wick that only just reached the rim or a jar that already ran warm can be tipped by a small change in the fuel. So REPEAT the scent comparison blind, CONFIRM throw, flame, pool, jar heat and end of life with three changed-blend candles beside three of the old blend, and add storage and documents if a new material came in. Check the original approval first: if any burn line was close to its limit, or you have no record, burn all six to the end and add a 7% rung. Swapping a 10% Verbena share for Citrus Lemon needs just 5 g — one 15 g bottle at ₹81.42.
One line: the grams set how likely a problem is; the margin sets how much it would matter.
Swapping a 10% Verbena share for Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil? The confirm test needs only 5 g of the new component in a 50.4 g premix — one 15 g bottle at ₹81.42. Citrus Lemon is the lowest-priced oil in CSI's collection at 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg on the 24 September 2026 pull.

How small is "only 10%"?

Ten per cent of the blend is 0.8% of the candle. That is the right number to start from — and the wrong number to stop at.

Makers who change a small part of a blend usually reason from the blend: "I only changed a tenth of it." The candle sees something even smaller. The load applies to the whole blend (CSI's convention: total oil = W × L), so a 10% component in a 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g × 10% = 1.6 g — 0.8% of the candle's weight. Scaled up, it is still modest: 160 g across a 100-candle batch.

One component at 10% of the blend · 200 g candle · CSI convention: load = share of finished weight
What "10% of the blend" means in the jar and the batch
Blend load Blend per candle The 10% component Share of the candle Per 100 candles Per 1,000 candles
6% 12 g 1.20 g 0.6% 120 g 1,200 g
8% 16 g 1.60 g 0.8% 160 g 1,600 g
10% 20 g 2 g 1.0% 200 g 2,000 g

Those numbers explain why it feels safe. They do not prove it is safe, for two reasons that have nothing to do with grams. First, fragrance materials are not equally potent. A component at 10% of a blend can be the note your nose notices first — a bright citrus top, say — so a small swap can change the character of the whole scent. Second, the size of a change only matters relative to how close the approved candle was to its limits. A candle with plenty of margin on flame, pool and jar heat can absorb a small change without noticing. A candle that was approved right at the edge — a wick that only just reached the rim, a jar that already ran warm — can be tipped over by very little.

So the answer to the title is yes, it can — partly: retest these. A small blend change can still move hot throw (through scent character and strength) and, in general candle-making practice, can move wick behaviour (through the composition of the fuel), though the second is less likely when the change is small and the system has margin. These are commonly described mechanisms, not measurements of any oil; CSI publishes no throw or burn data. The work is to decide how deep a test the change deserves, which is what this page is about.

The CSI principle
The size of a change is only half the question. The other half is how much room the approved candle had.
Small change, wide margin: confirm it. Small change, thin margin: test it properly. Large change: treat it as a new blend.

Two different things people mean by "10%"

Before planning a test, be precise about what changed. "I changed 10% of my blend" covers two quite different edits, and they touch the candle differently.

Example blend · Lemongrass and Lime 60 : Eucalyptus Spearmint 30 : Verbena 10 · 200 g candle at 8%
A: swap the 10% component · B: move 10 points between components
Approved blend A · swap Verbena for Citrus Lemon B · move 10 points to Eucalyptus Spearmint
Lemongrass and Lime 60% · 9.6 g 60% · 9.6 g 50% · 8.0 g
Eucalyptus Spearmint 30% · 4.8 g 30% · 4.8 g 40% · 6.4 g
10% component Verbena · 1.6 g Citrus Lemon · 1.6 g Verbena · 1.6 g
What changed — A material (new composition in the fuel) Proportions (same materials)
Grams that moved — 1.6 g of a new material 1.6 g shifted between two known materials
Blend cost per candle (1 kg rates) ₹72.20 ₹69.18 ₹68.79

Change A introduces a material the candle has never burned; its risk is a new composition, however small. Change B introduces nothing new, but it moves a larger share of a major component, and it can shift scent balance more than the grams suggest. Neither is automatically safe. Both are small enough that a confirm-level test is usually proportionate — unless the margin check below says otherwise. (The costs show why these edits happen: at the 1 kg rates, change A saves ₹3.02 per candle and change B ₹3.41.) The two-oil blend post covers a full component swap, and the three-oil rebuild covers a share that has to be re-found.

Calling it "the same blend" on the label. A blend with a different component or different proportions is a different formula, whatever its name. Give it a new version number on your spec sheet — Citrus Herb v2 — even if the product name stays the same. Otherwise a customer complaint six months from now cannot be traced to the batch that changed.

The margin check: how deep should the test go?

Open the approval record before you pour anything. It tells you how much room you have.

Go back to the results that approved the original blend and look at each burn line against its control or target. Was the melt pool comfortably reaching the edge, or only just? Was the flame steady, or already a little lively? Was jar-side heat well within your jar supplier's guidance and the standard you work to, or close to it? Was hot throw comfortably on target, or just enough? Those answers set the depth of the test.

Test depth · size of change × margin in the approved candle
Choose CONFIRM or REPEAT before you pour
Wide margin on every burn line Thin margin on any burn line
Small change, same materials (meaning B) CONFIRM: 3 new + 3 control, 4 cycles, 1 pair to full life CONFIRM + full life on all 6
Small change, new material (meaning A) CONFIRM: 3 new + 3 control, 4 cycles, 1 pair to full life REPEAT: add a 7% rung and full life on every candle
Larger change (25% of the blend or more) REPEAT as a new blend REPEAT as a new blend, starting with the scent stage
No approval record Treat the margin as thin Treat the margin as thin

The 25% line is a working threshold for this page, not an industry number; pick your own and write it down so the decision is consistent across your range. The last row matters more than it looks. If you never recorded how close the original candle was to its limits, you cannot claim it had margin, and the honest default is the deeper test. The 20-SKU triage post turns this into a rule for a whole range.

Why a thin-margin candle gets a lower-load rung
If the approved candle was close to a limit and the new blend comes out slightly hotter or stronger, a 7% rung beside the 8% tells you straight away whether the load can buy the margin back — without waiting for a second round. It is one extra set of three candles, and it keeps the wick frozen. The load-ladder post covers ladders in full.

The confirm test for a small change

1
Make two premixes by weightThe approved blend (control) and the changed blend, 50.4 g each: for change A, 30.2 g Lemongrass and Lime + 15.1 g Eucalyptus Spearmint + 5 g of the new 10% component. Use the same bottles of the unchanged oils in both.
2
Compare the premixes blindOn strips, at several checkpoints over a day, ask whether the two blends are distinguishable and whether the character differs. A small component often shows in the first minutes, when top notes dominate. The supplier-change post has a blind triangle test if you want a firmer answer.
3
Pour three and threeThree candles of each blend at 8% — 16 g of premix in each 200 g candle — from one bag of Natural Soy Pearl Wax on the same day, with your approved wick. Soy Pearl has no fragrance ceiling in this data; 8% is your approved load, so check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's figure.
4
Four paired cyclesAbout 3–4 hours per cycle, full cool-down between (a commonly used cycle, not a standard). Score blind hot throw, flame, carbon, soot, pool, jar-side heat and consumption against the control.
5
Full life by marginWide margin: one pair to the end. Thin margin: all six to the end, and the 7% rung if the new blend runs warmer or stronger.
Scoring sheet · changed blend vs approved blend · note the margin next to each line
Score the change and the room it used
Line Approved blend (control) Changed blend Margin left vs your limit or target
Scent: distinguishable blind? —
Hot throw (1–5)
Flame, carbon, soot
Pool: diameter, depth, minutes to full
Jar-side heat
Storage: droplets, colour

Decision rule: if every line is within the control's spread, release the new version. If scent is distinguishable but every burn line passes, it is a product decision — accept the new character and tell customers, or go back to the old component. If a burn line moves toward a limit and the margin was already thin, use the 7% rung or return to the old blend; do not release a small change that uses up the last of the room. If a burn line fails outright, the change was not small for this candle, whatever the grams said — treat it as a new blend.

Skipping the burn because the grams are tiny. 1.6 g feels like a rounding error, and often it behaves like one. But the cost of the test is six candles; the cost of being wrong is a recall of a bestseller. The grams set the likelihood; the margin sets the consequence. Test to the consequence.
A small change to a comfortable candle is a formality. A small change to a candle at its limit is a new formula.

The new component costs ₹81.42 to test. Everything else is stock you already hold or wax, wicks and jars you would use anyway. Compare that with the saving: at the 1 kg rates, replacing Verbena (₹4.72 a gram) with Citrus Lemon (₹2.83 a gram) at 1.6 g per candle saves ₹3.02 per candle — ₹3,020.80 per thousand candles. The payback on a ₹2,279.42 from-scratch kit is 755 candles. The cost-comparison post works through cheaper replacements at different loads.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. This page recommends a ₹81.42 bottle as the entire new spend, and it tells you a thin-margin candle might be better left alone. We would rather you kept a bestseller's formula than saved ₹3.02 a candle on a change that uses up its safety room. We also do not claim Citrus Lemon behaves like Verbena in a blend; we have not published scent-profile or burn data for either.

Release and record

Issue the changed blend as a new version: components by exact listed name and supplier, weight ratio, grams per candle, total load, premix size, wax, wick, the margin check, the test result and the date. Keep a retained premix of both versions for a few months; if a customer mentions the scent has changed, you can compare. The change-control form post gives a one-page format for exactly this kind of small, easily forgotten change.

And keep the margin in mind for the future. Every small change that passes uses a little of the candle's room, and several "only 10%" edits in a row can add up to a candle that is no longer the one you approved. Re-run a full comparison against a retained original every few versions. The fragrance-change hub has the full method, and the same-name reformulation post covers changes you did not make yourself.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A small blend change is often a cost saving, and it would suit us to wave it through. This page says the opposite when the approved candle has little margin, and prices the test at a single 15 g bottle. We do not claim any of our oils behaves like another in a blend.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified on 10 September 2026 (Blog 760) and the 25 September 2026 wick recheck. Component grams, blend costs per candle, savings and payback are arithmetic using total = W × L and component = total × share.

The 60 : 30 : 10 blend, 8% load, 25% "larger change" threshold, three candles per blend, four cycles and 7% rung are working examples and practices, not standards. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no published fragrance ceiling here. For help, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Can a small change to a fragrance blend affect hot throw?
Yes. Some materials are far more noticeable than their share suggests, especially top notes, so a small swap can change how the candle smells when lit. Compare it blind against the old blend.
Do I need to retest my candle if I change 10% of the fragrance blend?
Usually a confirm test: three new-blend candles beside three of the old blend, four paired cycles and one pair to the end. If the original candle was close to any limit, or you have no record, test more deeply.
How much fragrance is 10% of a blend in a candle?
Multiply the blend by the share: a 200 g candle at 8% has 16 g of blend, so 10% of it is 1.6 g — 0.8% of the candle.
Is changing a blend ratio the same as replacing a component?
No. Replacing a component brings a new material into the fuel; shifting a ratio moves known materials around. Both are formula changes, and both deserve at least a confirm test.
Can I change a fragrance blend to cut costs?
Yes, if the new version passes against the old one. For example, swapping a 1.6 g Verbena share for Citrus Lemon saves ₹3.02 per candle at 1 kg prices — test it before you bank the saving.
What does margin mean in candle testing?
How much room the approved candle had between its results and your limits or targets — a pool comfortably at the edge, a jar well within your supplier's guidance. Wide margin absorbs small changes; thin margin does not.
Size the test to the margin
Small in grams is not the same as small in effect. Check the margin, then confirm.
