A cheaper wax only saves money after the saving has paid for proving it. Price the retest, your hours and one failed attempt, then count payback in months of your own volume.
366 candles
to pay back the retest and reserve at ₹14.93 a candle · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
A cheaper wax would save ₹15.00 a candle. How do I know if the revalidation is worth it? Divide the full cost of revalidating by the saving per candle, then turn candles into months at your own volume. In our worked example the retest costs ₹3,528.02 (materials plus 8 hours of your time at a worked-example ₹250.00 an hour), so at ₹15.00 a candle it pays back after 236 candles. Add a reserve for a failed first attempt and it is 364.

Is there a real CSI example? Yes, and it lands close to the title. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 10 kg is ₹0.51 (50.74 paise) a gram; Eco Soy CSI 400 at 5 kg is ₹0.40 (39.92 paise). On 138 g of wax per 150 g candle, the saving is ₹14.93. Payback: 237 candles, or 366 with the reserve.

So should I switch? Our rule, labelled as judgement: switch only if about three months of your own volume pays back the retest including the reserve, and only after the new wax passes every release gate. In this example that means roughly 122 candles a month or more. Below that, the saving is real but slow, and the risk sits on your bestseller in the meantime. Don't switch.

What can eat the saving? A wick step (C1 → C2 adds ₹3.54 a candle, leaving ₹11.39), a heavier fill weight, a higher load for the same throw, or a festive season lost to testing. Re-run the sum with every one you find. Costs here exclude labour beyond the stated hours, freight, packaging and GST.
The short answer
The formula: payback in candles = (retest materials + your time + reserve) ÷ saving per candle. Then months = candles ÷ your monthly volume.
The worked example: ₹15.00 saving, ₹3,528.02 retest → 236 candles; with a ₹1,922.11 reserve → 364 candles.
Real CSI prices: CSI 464 (10 kg) → Eco Soy CSI 400 (5 kg) saves ₹14.93 a candle → 237 candles, 366 with the reserve. At 50 candles a month that is 7.3 months; at 200, 1.8.
The rule (judgement): switch only if three months of your volume covers the retest plus reserve (here about 122 candles a month), after every release gate passes, and never in the run-up to a festive peak.
When does a cheaper wax pay for its own retest? Saving ₹14.93 a candle (CSI 464 at 10 kg → Eco Soy CSI 400 at 5 kg, 138 g of wax per 150 g candle). Retest cost: materials plus 8 h of your time at a worked-example ₹250.00 an hour; reserve = one failed first attempt. Drawn to scale. Your volume and your hourly figure move every line; costs exclude labour beyond that, freight and GST. 0 2,000 4,000 6,000 8,000 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 saved (₹) months after the switch 3-month rule retest ₹3,528.02 + reserve ₹5,450.13 50/month 100/month 200/month 1.8 mo 3.7 mo 7.3 mo ○ = payback including the reserve. Solid line: round-1 retest only (237 candles at ₹14.93). Dashed: with reserve (366 candles). Rule (our judgement): switch only if about three months of your own volume covers the dashed line: here, 122 candles a month or more. The saving is a worked example on CSI live prices, 29 September 2026; it assumes the new wax passes every gate at the same load and wick.
The saving has to climb past the cost of proving the new wax. Each rising line is one monthly volume at ₹14.93 a candle; the circles mark where it pays for the retest plus the reserve. Lines crossing the dashed line inside the shaded band pass the three-month rule. Worked example on CSI live prices; your hourly figure and volume move every line.
Straight answer
I found a cheaper wax that could save ₹15.00 per candle. How do I calculate whether the savings justify reformulation and revalidation work?
Treat the retest as an investment and ask how long the saving takes to pay it back. Step one: price the saving per candle at the pack sizes you would really buy, on the grams of wax in your candle. Step two: price the retest: every test candle's wax, oil, wick and jar, plus your own hands-on hours at a figure you choose. Step three: add a reserve for the first attempt failing, because a new wax that needs a different wick costs a second round. Step four: divide by the saving to get candles, and by your monthly volume to get months. In our worked example the retest is ₹3,528.02 and the reserve ₹1,922.11; at ₹15.00 a candle that is 236 candles, or 364 with the reserve. On real CSI prices (CSI 464 at 10 kg to Eco Soy CSI 400 at 5 kg) the saving is ₹14.93 and the answer is 237 or 366 candles. Then decide on months, not candles: if about three months of your own volume doesn't cover the retest plus reserve, don't switch. Here that line sits at roughly 122 candles a month. And the saving only exists once the new wax passes the same release gates your current wax did, at the same load and wick; if it needs more oil or a bigger wick, redo the sum before you celebrate.
One line: a per-candle saving is only a saving after it has paid for proving the new wax; count that in months of your own volume, and below about three, stay put.
Testing Eco Soy CSI 400? Buy the 1 kg (₹399.00). It covers the whole retest (564 g) and a reserve round (414 g) with 22 g left, and it is not dearer per gram than the 5 kg: the 5 kg costs ₹1.00 more than five 1 kg bags.
Eco Soy CSI 400 1 kg — ₹399.00

The break-even formula

A saving you haven't earned back yet is a cost with a nicer name.

Every wax change costs something before it saves anything: test candles, your time, and the risk that the first attempt fails. The break-even turns those into one number you can compare with your sales.

Break-even sheet · wax switch · fill in your own figures
Every line is money you can read off a bill or a diary · worked-example values from this page
Line How to get it Worked example
A · Saving per candle Grams of wax per candle × (old per gram − new per gram), at the pack sizes you buy ₹15.00 (title) or ₹14.93 (CSI 464 → Eco Soy CSI 400)
B · Retest materials Every test candle's wax, oil, jar and wick, at the price you pay ₹1,528.02
C · Your time Hands-on hours × a figure you choose (not burn time you spend on other work) ₹2,000.00 (8 h × ₹250.00, worked example)
D · Reserve The cost of one failed first attempt: a second, smaller round ₹1,922.11
Payback in candles (B + C + D) ÷ A, rounded up 364 at ₹15.00 · 366 at ₹14.93
Payback in months Candles ÷ your candles per month 3.7 months at 100 a month

Two things are deliberately missing. The first is the oil: the same 12 g of Autumn goes into both waxes at the same 8%, so it cancels out of the saving (if the new wax needs a different load, that's a different comparison, and it belongs to the total-candle cost post). The second is a probability. We don't pretend to know how often a new wax fails first time; the reserve simply prices one failure, which is a decision you can check against your own history.

Mistake: computing the saving on the price per kilogram. What happens: "₹1,082.00 cheaper per 10 kg" sounds decisive and tells you nothing about payback. Fix: convert to the grams in your candle. A 150 g candle at 8% of total weight holds 138 g of wax, so a per-gram gap of ₹0.11 (10.82 paise before rounding) is ₹14.93 a candle. A 300 g candle doubles it; a 100 g candle cuts it by a third. The break-even is candle-specific.

Pricing the revalidation honestly

The candles are the cheap part of a retest. The weeks and the hours are not.

The retest being priced is the scoped one from the wax-change hub: seven 150 g candles, four in the new wax (three scented, one unscented reference) and three controls poured fresh from your current wax, all at 8% of Autumn in the 150 g Clear Glass Jar on Eco C1, with a surface blot to day 14, burns 1–3, a blind throw at day 14 and two full lives per arm. We don't repeat the method here; we cost it. What the switch to Eco Soy CSI 400 voids on your formula card is below.

Retest matrix · CSI 464 → Eco Soy CSI 400 · our judgement, labelled
What the cheaper wax inherits as fact, as hypothesis, and not at all
On your formula card Status Why
Jar, headspace, oil and its page Still valid Unchanged by a wax switch
8% load, fill weight, approved wick (Eco C1) Keep as hypothesis Carried into the test as starting points; the page's "Recommended Wick Eco Wicks" names a range, not a size
Add and pour temperatures New CSI 464's pour of 80–90°C is void. Eco Soy CSI 400's page: add fragrance at 85°C, stir gently for 2 minutes, pour directly; its table says 80 to 90 degrees
Load ceiling New CSI 464's "up to 10%" no longer applies; Eco Soy CSI 400's page states none in the text we captured, so Autumn's 7–11% is the only stated range. 8% stays
Pool, flame, full life, final-third heat Must retest Earned on CSI 464; a different wax commonly burns differently on the same wick (tendency)
Hot throw, surface, colour, summer sweat Must retest All wax-dependent; the page describes the wax as "Creamy White"
Wax cost per candle New ₹70.02 → ₹55.09: the reason for the switch, and the only row that is already known
Round 1 · revalidation cost · worked example

Item Used Cost
Eco Soy CSI 400 (1 kg test bag, ₹0.40/g) 564 g (three scented + one unscented) ₹225.04
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (your stock, ₹0.51/g) 414 g (three controls) ₹210.06
Autumn (100 g, ₹5.43/g) 72 g (six scented candles; 28 g left) ₹390.82
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) 7 of a pack of 10 ₹660.80
Eco Candle Wicks, Thin (C1) 7 of a pack of 20 (10-pack out of stock) ₹41.30
Materials ₹1,528.02
Your hands-on time (worked example) 8 h at ₹250.00: weighing, pouring, blot days, logs, blind test ₹2,000.00
Round 1 total ₹3,528.02

The hourly figure is yours to set; ₹250.00 is only a placeholder so the sum has a number in it. Leave time out entirely and the materials alone pay back after 103 candles, but that flatters the switch. Burn hours are not in the sheet: the candles must be attended while they burn, but you can work alongside them. If you can't, count those hours too. Cash from nothing for round 1 is ₹2,003.80, since your current wax is already on the shelf. Everything here excludes freight, packaging and GST; if you want landed costs, the landed-cost method for jars applies to wax just as well.

The ₹15.00 worked example, then real CSI prices

The title's number is a worked example. The real pair lands seven paise away.

The worked example: a saving of ₹15.00 a candle against a round-1 retest of ₹3,528.02 pays back after 236 candles; with the reserve, 364. The real pair: CSI sells both waxes, so the same sum can be run on live prices.

Saving per 150 g candle · real CSI prices · 29 September 2026
138 g of wax per candle at 8% of total weight · per gram at the size bought
Wax and pack Price Per gram Wax per candle
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 10 kg (current) ₹5,074.00 ₹0.51 (50.74 paise) ₹70.02
Eco Soy CSI 400, 5 kg (cheaper) ₹1,996.00 ₹0.40 (39.92 paise) ₹55.09
Eco Soy CSI 400, 1 kg ₹399.00 ₹0.40 (39.90 paise) ₹55.06
Saving per candle, 10 kg → 5 kg ₹14.93 (21.3% of the wax cost)
Saving per candle, 10 kg → 1 kg bags ₹14.96

Two facts from the price list, stated without reading anything into them: Eco Soy CSI 400's 5 kg bag (₹1,996.00) costs ₹1.00 more than five 1 kg bags (₹1,995.00), so the smaller bag is fractionally cheaper per gram; and CSI 464 is flat per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg. At ₹14.93 a candle the real payback is 237 candles for round 1 and 366 with the reserve. Put the saving next to the whole candle and it looks different again: an Autumn candle in the 150 g jar on C1 costs ₹235.46 in materials on CSI 464 and ₹220.53 on Eco Soy CSI 400, so the switch trims 6.3% of the candle's materials.

Mistake: treating the two waxes as interchangeable because both are soy container waxes from the same supplier. What happens: the retest gets skipped because "it's all CSI soy", and the first sign of a difference is a customer's tunnelled candle. Fix: CSI publishes no specification sheet beyond the page figures and no lot certificates for either wax, and nothing on either page says they burn alike. "Same supplier" is a claim to test, exactly like "direct replacement" (the direct-replacement post has the supplier question list).

The reserve: price a failed first attempt

Plan for the first round to fail. If it doesn't, the reserve is a bonus.

A common way for a new wax to fail round 1, in our judgement, is on the wick: the pool, flame or final third leaves the control's band, and the approved wick is no longer the right rung. The cheapest honest reserve is one more round on the next CSI rung: three new-wax candles on Eco C2, judged against the round-1 controls you already have.

Reserve round · three new-wax candles on Eco C2 · worked example
Uses the wax left in the 1 kg test bag and the three spare jars from the pack of 10
Item Used Cost
Eco Soy CSI 400 (left in the 1 kg bag) 414 g (22 g still left) ₹165.19
Autumn (buy a 50 g; 28 g is not enough) 36 g ₹195.41
Clear Glass Jar (the three spares) 3 ₹283.20
Eco Candle Wicks, Thick (C2), 10-pack 3 ₹28.32
Your time (worked example) 5 h at ₹250.00 ₹1,250.00
Reserve total ₹1,922.11

Retest plus reserve: ₹5,450.13. The reserve round's extra cash is ₹365.80. It prices one failure only. If your history says new waxes often take two wick rounds in your jars, price two; if C2 is the answer, remember the saving itself shrinks (next section). And there is a limit to what a reserve buys: CSI's tabbed wicks run C1, then C2, then Cotton Braided for wide jars, with no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2. If the cheaper wax needs a step CSI doesn't list, the honest answer may be that it isn't cheaper for you at all.

Where the reserve's rules come from
The round-1 gates (surface to day 14, burns 1–3 inside the control's band, blind throw not below the control, both full lives clean) are the hub's release rule. The three-arm wick method, if you'd rather test both neighbours at once, is the keep-the-wick test; how far down to burn before calling it is the depth question.

From candles to months: the three-month rule

Three hundred candles is a fortnight for one maker and a year for another.
Payback in months · real saving ₹14.93 a candle · worked example
Retest ₹3,528.02 · with reserve ₹5,450.13 · the three-month rule is our judgement
Your volume Saving per month Months to pay back the retest Months including the reserve Three-month rule
50 candles a month ₹746.58 4.7 7.3 Don't switch
100 candles a month ₹1,493.16 2.4 3.7 Don't switch (close)
200 candles a month ₹2,986.32 1.2 1.8 Candidate, after the gates pass

Our rule: switch only if about three months of your own volume covers the retest plus the reserve. On these numbers that is 122 candles a month or more (122 at the title's ₹15.00). At 50 a month, three months saves ₹2,239.74, well short of ₹5,450.13. Why three? Because it is roughly a season: long enough for a sensible test, short enough that your oils, jars and customers haven't changed before the saving arrives. It is a judgement, not a law; if you plan to run this formula for years, you might accept six. What you shouldn't accept is a payback so long that the next wax, oil or jar change arrives before it.

1
Price the saving on your candleWax grams per candle × the per-gram gap, at the pack sizes you would buy for production. Use the pack price list, not a quote from memory.
2
Count the retest candlesSeven for one product (the hub design). For more products, cost the worst-case representatives, not every oil (twenty oils has the wave design).
3
Price materials and your hoursWax, oil, jar and wick per candle; hands-on hours at a figure you would pay someone else. Write the figure down: it's the one people fudge.
4
Add one failed attemptA three-candle round on the next wick rung is the minimum reserve. Two rounds if your history says so.
5
Divide, then convert to months(Materials + time + reserve) ÷ saving = candles, rounded up. Candles ÷ your monthly volume = months.
6
Apply the rule, then the calendarThree months or less: start the retest, and switch only after every gate passes, at an order boundary. More: stay on your current wax. Either way, not in the weeks before a festive peak.
When the right answer is "don't switch yet": it is 29 September 2026; Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days away. A retest started now releases, at best, around the end of October: too late to move festive production safely, and the weeks of testing compete with your busiest pours. Keep your current wax through Diwali, run the retest alongside, and switch in November if the sums and the gates both say yes. Argued against our own interest: if you make 50 candles a month, don't move to our cheaper wax at all. The saving is genuine, but it would take 7.3 months to earn back the work, and CSI 464 is a fine wax to stay on.

What eats a saving after the switch

A per-gram saving is the best case. Everything after it is a deduction.
Saving erosion · real CSI example · worked figures
Start: ₹14.93 a candle · each line is a thing the retest might reveal
If the retest shows… Effect per candle Saving left Payback incl. reserve
A wick step from C1 to C2 +₹3.54 of wick ₹11.39 479 candles (4.8 months at 100 a month)
2% more wax to reach your fill line (worked example) +₹1.10 of wax ₹13.83 Recalculate with your weighed test pour
A higher load for the same throw More oil per candle, at far more per gram than wax Can go below nothing A different comparison: the total-candle cost post
A slower cure before throw settles More stock tied up before sale Unchanged per candle Adds days, not rupees

The oil line is the one that can reverse the answer. Autumn at 1 kg is ₹5.43 a gram against ₹0.40 for the wax, so each gram of oil costs about 13.6 times a gram of the new wax. One more percentage point of load on a 150 g candle is 1.5 g of oil, ₹8.14: more than half the saving gone. A cheaper wax that needs more fragrance to match your throw is usually not cheaper, and the blind check at day 14 is where you find out.

Keep the sheet after you switch
The break-even assumes the saving holds. Put the per-gram prices, the wick, the fill weight and the load on your batch record, and re-run the sheet when any of them moves. The wider version of this, cutting raw-material cost across a whole range without risking bestsellers, is the cost-reduction post; the same payback maths for a wick that is ₹2.00 cheaper is the ₹2 wick post.

What to buy, and when

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no burn data for any wax, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Buy in two steps: round 1 now, the reserve only if round 1 fails. Oil candles are counted at 12 g for a 150 g candle at 8%.

The jar in our example. The page lists "150g fill capacity", outer diameter about 7 cm and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C". That matters for the switch: Eco Soy CSI 400's page says add fragrance at 85°C and pour directly, which sits at this jar's stated limit, so pour at 85°C or a little under, never above. The 85°C wording is a pour limit, not a burn rating.

The CSI principle
A saving starts after it has paid for its proof.
Price the retest, your hours and one failed attempt; divide by the saving; count it in months of your own volume. If that is more than a season, the cheaper wax is not cheaper for you yet.
"Fifteen rupees a candle is a lot of money, three hundred and sixty-four candles from now."
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia
Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both waxes compared here, the oil, the wicks and the jars, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells low-volume makers not to switch to our cheaper wax, to buy the 1 kg test bag rather than the 5 kg, and to keep our dearer wax through Diwali.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged; every other size shown is in stock. Wax and oil wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The break-even structure, the reserve, the three-month rule and the hourly figure are our judgement or labelled worked examples; the saving is arithmetic on live prices and assumes the new wax passes at the same load and wick. CSI publishes no specification sheets beyond its page figures, no lot certificates and no burn data. For lot numbers, bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if switching to a cheaper candle wax is worth it?
Divide the cost of revalidating (test candles, your hours and a reserve for a failed first attempt) by the saving per candle, then divide by your monthly volume. In our worked example a ₹15.00 saving pays back ₹5,450.13 after 364 candles. If about three months of your volume doesn't cover it, don't switch.
How much does it cost to test a new candle wax?
For one product, the seven-candle retest in our example uses ₹1,528.02 of materials; with 8 hours of your time at a worked-example ₹250.00 an hour it is ₹3,528.02. A reserve round on the next wick rung adds ₹1,922.11. Costs exclude freight, packaging and GST.
How much cheaper is Eco Soy CSI 400 than CSI 464 per candle?
On 29 September 2026 prices, CSI 464 at 10 kg is ₹0.51 (50.74 paise) a gram and Eco Soy CSI 400 at 5 kg is ₹0.40. On 138 g of wax in a 150 g candle at 8%, that is ₹70.02 against ₹55.09: a saving of ₹14.93, if the new wax passes at the same load and wick.
Should I include my time when calculating wax switching costs?
Yes, at a figure you would pay someone else; leaving it out makes every switch look better. In our example, time is ₹2,000.00 of the ₹3,528.02 round-1 cost. Materials alone pay back after 103 candles; with time and reserve it is 366 at the real saving.
Can a cheaper wax end up costing more per candle?
Yes. If it needs a bigger wick (₹3.54 a candle more for C2 than C1), more wax to reach your fill line, or a higher fragrance load for the same throw, the saving shrinks or disappears. Oil costs far more per gram than wax, so a higher load is the usual way a cheap wax stops being cheap.
When is the wrong time to change candle wax?
In the weeks before a festive peak, in the middle of an order, and when your volume is too low to pay the retest back within a few months. From 29 September 2026 to Diwali on 8 November 2026 is 40 days: keep your current wax through it and qualify the new one alongside.
Before you switch for a saving
₹14.93 a candle, 366 candles to earn back the retest and reserve: fill in your own sheet first.
Price the saving on your candle, cost the seven-candle retest and your hours, add one failed attempt, and convert to months at your volume. If it is under about three and the gates pass, switch at an order boundary. Send us the sheet on WhatsApp and we'll check the arithmetic.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on wax changes (4801–4820). It owns the revalidation break-even for a cheaper wax: the cost of the retest (materials plus the reader's labelled time), a reserve for one failed attempt, payback in candles and months, a break-even chart, and the three-month rule. Total-candle comparisons with a load change are in 4818; the wick payback in 4856; range-wide cost reduction in 4895.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). Ceilings as the pages state them (CSI 464 up to 10%; Eco Soy CSI 400 none stated; Autumn 7–11%) are formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Temperatures as stated: CSI 464 pour 80–90°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 add fragrance at 85°C, stir 2 minutes, pour directly; the 150 g jar "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C". The ₹15.00 saving, the ₹250.00 hourly figure, the 8 h and 5 h, the 2% fill example and the 50/100/200 volumes are worked examples; the three-month rule and the reserve design are editorial judgement. Payback figures are rounded up to whole candles. Costs exclude freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
