When to Buy Bulk · Splitting a 20-Scent Range
Yes: buy kilos only for the scents that sell, and keep the rest small. But know what the kilo is buying. For most oils, including four of the five example bestsellers here, it is fewer reorders and no stockouts, not a lower price. The price savings in a range often sit in the slow scents' 500 g bottles.
₹29,386.64
less oil sitting on the shelf, on average, when only the five bestsellers go to 1 kg instead of all 20 scents · example range of 400 candles a month · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I buy 1 kg only for my five bestsellers? Yes, as the default. In an example range of 400 candles a month where five scents sell 48 candles each, a kilo of a bestseller lasts 1.25 months; a kilo of a slow scent selling about 11 a month lasts 5.6 months. Kilos across all 20 would keep ₹49,522.70 of oil on the shelf on average against ₹20,136.06.

Will the kilos save money on the bestsellers? Only where the oil breaks. Of the five example bestsellers, British Rose saves 10.3% per gram at 1 kg; Roasted Coffee 4.2%, Lavender 3.3%, Dark Vanilla 3.2%; Blue Ocean nothing. For most, the kilo buys security against running out.

What about the other 15? Keep them in 100 g bottles, except where the oil has a big break at 500 g and the 500 g lasts under about three months. Mango Coconut (20.7%), Lemongrass and Lime (11.9%) and Jasmine (8.8%) are examples. See the refined split.

When does a scent earn a kilo? A simple rule: when a kilo lasts three months or less, which at 16 g a candle plus 4% is about 20 candles a month of that scent. Set your own cap.
The short answer
Policy: Kilos for scents that use a kilo within your cap (about 20+ candles a month at three months). 100 g for the rest, 500 g where an oil's 500 g break is large.
Cash: Average oil on the shelf, example range: all-kilo ₹49,522.70 · hybrid ₹20,136.06 · all 100 g ₹18,050.36.
Price: The kilo is within 1% of the 100 g per gram for 52 of 91 CSI oils. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? lists the 24 that save 5% or more.

20 scents, 5 bestsellers — months of oil on the shelf per scent, all-kilo vs hybrid Example: 400 candles a month, top 5 scents sell 48 each, the other 15 about 10.7 each. Bar = months one order of that scent lasts. A · every scent in 1 kg — average oil on the shelf ₹49,522.70 top 5: 1.25 months each other 15: 5.63 months each B · top 5 in 1 kg, other 15 in 100 g — average oil on the shelf ₹20,136.06 top 5: 1.25 months each other 15: 1.13 months each Bars capped at 6 months for scale. Oils and split are illustrative; CSI live pricing, 24 Sep 2026.
Under the all-kilo policy every slow scent sits on the shelf for 5.6 months per kilo, and the average value of oil on the shelf is ₹49,522.70. Under the hybrid, bestsellers keep their kilos (1.25 months each) and the slow scents turn over monthly in 100 g bottles, cutting the average to ₹20,136.06.
Straight answer
I have 20 fragrances but only five are bestsellers. Should I buy 1 kg fragrance oils only for those five and keep smaller quantities of the rest?
Yes, as a starting rule, with two refinements. In an example range of 400 candles a month, where five scents sell 48 candles each and fifteen share the rest at about 11 each, a kilo lasts a bestseller 1.25 months but a slow scent 5.6 months. Buying kilos of all 20 keeps about ₹49,522.70 of oil on the shelf on average; kilos for the five and 100 g bottles for the fifteen keep ₹20,136.06. First refinement: know what the kilo buys. On CSI's listed prices, pulled 24 September 2026, the kilo is within 1% of the 100 g per gram for 52 of 91 oils. Of the example five, only British Rose saves meaningfully (10.3%); Blue Ocean saves nothing. So for most bestsellers the kilo buys stock security and fewer reorders, which is exactly what a bestseller needs. Second refinement: check each slow scent's own ladder. Some break hard at 500 g, such as Mango Coconut (20.7% cheaper per gram than 100 g), and a 500 g lasts a slow scent under three months. Using those breaks lowers the monthly oil bill further. A scent earns a kilo when it uses one within your months-of-cover cap: about 20 candles a month at a three-month cap.
One line: kilos for the scents that empty them in a few months, small bottles for the rest — and let each oil's price ladder, not its rank, decide between 100 g and 500 g.
If British Rose is one of your five, its kilo is a double win: stock security and ₹3.07 a gram against ₹3.42 at 100 g, 10.3% less. At 48 candles a month it saves about ₹282.75 a month on that scent alone.

The example range

Twenty scents is twenty stock lines. Five of them do the selling; fifteen mostly wait.

To price the question, here is an example range: 400 container candles a month across 20 scents, with the five bestsellers taking 60% of sales (48 candles each) and the other fifteen sharing 40% (about 10.7 each). Every candle is 200 g at an 8% load, so 16 g of oil, plus a 4% allowance for pour loss and test burns. That makes 798.7 g a month for each bestseller and 177.5 g for each slow scent. The bestseller oils here come from near the top of CSI's best-selling sort as stand-ins; your five are whatever your own sales say. The split is illustrative, and the method works for any shape.

A kilo is 62.5 candles at 16 g. For a bestseller at 48 candles a month, that is 1.25 months of stock. For a slow scent at about 11 a month, it is 5.6 months. Those two numbers are really the whole answer. A kilo that empties in five weeks is working stock. A kilo that empties in five or six months is a bet that the scent will keep selling, that nothing new will replace it, and that the oil will be as good in March as it was in October. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? covers what the kilo costs per gram oil by oil.

Rank by candles, not by favourites
Pull three months of sales by scent and rank them. The bestsellers for this purpose are the scents that would use a kilo within your months-of-cover cap, not the ones you like most or the newest launch. Re-rank every quarter.

Three policies, priced

Here is the example range bought three ways. "First order" is the cash to stock every scent once. "Average oil on the shelf" assumes each kilo is reordered when it runs out (average half a kilo) and 100 g bottles are bought monthly to cover each month's need (average half of that). Monthly oil cost is consumption priced at the pack you buy. Holding cost uses an example rate of 1.5% a month, a placeholder for your own cost of money.

Example range, 400 candles a month · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · holding at example 1.5% a month — replace with your own
All kilo, hybrid, all 100 g
Policy First order (cash on the day) Average oil on the shelf Oil used per month, priced Holding / month (example) Oil + holding / month Months per order, slow scents
A · All 20 scents in 1 kg ₹99,045.40 ₹49,522.70 ₹32,880.09 ₹742.84 ₹33,622.93 5.6
B · Top 5 in 1 kg, other 15 in 100 g ₹40,272.12 ₹20,136.06 ₹33,554.42 ₹302.04 ₹33,856.46 1.1
C · All 20 scents in 100 g ₹36,100.72 ₹18,050.36 ₹34,307.62 ₹270.76 ₹34,578.37 1.1

The all-kilo policy has the lowest oil price per month (₹32,880.09) but needs ₹99,045.40 on the first day and keeps ₹49,522.70 of oil on the shelf, most of it in slow scents that take 5.6 months to use. The hybrid needs ₹40,272.12 up front and keeps ₹20,136.06 on the shelf. Its monthly oil bill is ₹674.33 higher, because slow scents are priced at 100 g rates, but once holding is counted the gap narrows to ₹233.53. All-100 g is dearest per month and gives bestsellers only a month's cover per order.

So on money alone, the hybrid and the all-kilo policy are close. What separates them is risk. The all-kilo policy puts ₹58,773.28 more into oil on day one, and every slow scent holds months of stock. If two of those fifteen scents stop selling, or you drop them from the range, those kilos become dead stock. I Want to Discontinue a Slow-Selling Candle — How Do I Use the Remaining Fragrance Oil, Wax, Jars and Packaging Without Wasting Inventory? covers what to do with oil from a discontinued scent; the better answer is not to be holding a kilo of it.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell kilos, and twenty of them is a large order. We are still telling you to buy kilos only for the scents that empty them in a few months. For most of our oils the kilo is not cheaper per gram, so a kilo of a slow scent is mostly months of cash on your shelf. Put that cash into the bestsellers' stock security, or into testing the next scent.

What the kilo buys your bestsellers

Here are the five example bestsellers, with what the kilo saves on price and what it costs to hold at their usage.

798.7 g a month each (48 candles + 4%) · holding of 450 g extra average stock at example 1.5% a month
Kilo vs 100 g for the five bestsellers
Oil ₹/g at 100 g ₹/g at 1 kg Kilo saving Months per kilo Price saving / month Extra holding / month
Lavender ₹5.40 ₹5.22 3.3% 1.25 ₹142.97 ₹35.24
British Rose ₹3.42 ₹3.07 10.3% 1.25 ₹282.75 ₹20.71
Roasted Coffee ₹3.90 ₹3.74 4.2% 1.25 ₹129.39 ₹25.23
Dark Vanilla ₹7.90 ₹7.65 3.2% 1.25 ₹202.87 ₹51.61
Blue Ocean ₹4.95 ₹4.96 -0.1% 1.25 -₹4.79 ₹33.45

British Rose saves far more than it costs to hold. Roasted Coffee, Lavender and Dark Vanilla save modestly and still come out ahead at this usage. Blue Ocean's kilo is fractionally dearer per gram than its 100 g, so on price alone it loses. Yet all five should be on kilos. A bestseller that runs out costs you sales, and at 48 candles a month you would otherwise be ordering eight 100 g bottles of each scent every month. For bestsellers, the kilo's job is continuity; any price saving is a bonus that depends on the oil. My Bestselling Fragrance Keeps Running Out — Should I Hold More Fragrance Oil Inventory than I Hold for Slower-Selling Candle Scents? covers holding more than a kilo of the scent that keeps running out.

The CSI principle
Rank decides the tier. The oil's own price ladder decides the bottle.
Sales rank tells you which scents can carry a kilo without it going stale. Each oil's listed prices tell you whether 100 g, 500 g or 1 kg is the cheapest way to hold the amount you need. Use both, and re-check both each quarter.

The refined split: use the slow scents' ladders

The biggest per-gram savings in a range are often not in the bestsellers. They are in slow scents whose price breaks at 500 g.

Look at the fifteen slow scents' ladders. Most are flat above 100 g: Sandalwood, Apple Cinnamon, Woody Oud and White Royal Oud cost the same per gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg. But several break at 500 g, and at 177 g a month a 500 g bottle lasts 2.8 months, inside a three-month cap.

White Royal Oud ₹8.10 ₹8.10 ₹8.10 5.6 2.8 2 × 100 g a month

Moving the six slow scents whose 500 g is at least 5% cheaper per gram than their 100 g (Citrus Lemon, Jasmine, Fresh Strawberries, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Lemongrass and Lime, and Mango Coconut) into 500 g bottles, while the bestsellers stay on kilos and the other nine stay on 100 g, gives a fourth policy. Its first order is ₹46,553.92, its average oil on the shelf ₹23,276.96, and its oil plus holding ₹33,416.18 a month: ₹440.28 a month less than the plain hybrid, and ₹206.75 less than all-kilo, with ₹26,245.74 less oil on the shelf. That is the payoff for reading each oil's ladder instead of applying one rule.

The mistake that looks like simplicity. One pack size for every scent in a tier. "Kilos for the top five, 100 g for the rest" is a good start, but it misses slow scents where 500 g is 5–21% cheaper per gram and still turns over within three months, and it misses the two oils (Saffron Cedarwood, Sage and Cedarwood) whose kilo costs more than two 500 g bottles. I Use 500 g of One Fragrance Oil Every Month — When Should I Stop Buying 100 g Bottles and Move to 500 g or 1 Kg Packs? covers those pack traps.

Rules for moving scents between tiers

1
Rank scents by candles soldThree months of sales, by scent, highest first. Convert each to grams of oil a month with your own grams per candle and loss rate.
2
Set a months-of-cover capThis page uses three months as a working assumption. At 16.64 g a candle, a kilo fits inside it at about 20 candles a month; a 500 g at about 10.
3
Kilo tier: scents that empty a kilo inside the capBuy these in 1 kg, reorder when about a month's use is left. Check whether the oil's kilo saves on price, but buy it for continuity either way.
4
500 g tier: slow scents with a real 500 g breakIf an oil is 5% or more cheaper per gram at 500 g than 100 g and a 500 g fits your cap, hold it in 500 g.
5
100 g tier: everything elseFlat-priced slow scents stay in 100 g, bought monthly. Never produce from 15 g testers; they carry a median 23.1% premium per gram.
6
Review each quarter and after every festive seasonPromote scents that climb, demote scents that fall, and use up demoted kilos before reordering. My Candle Business Uses 20 Different Fragrance Oils — How Do I Set Separate Reorder Levels for Fast-Selling and Slow-Selling Scents? sets separate reorder levels for fast and slow scents.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A 20-scent range bought in kilos would be a large order for us. This page recommends kilos only for scents that use them within a few months, says plainly that for most of our oils the kilo is not cheaper per gram, and points to the slow scents where a 500 g bottle saves more than any kilo.

Every oil price on this page is CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; every size used in the example was in stock on that date. First-order cash, average stock, monthly cost, holding and months of cover are arithmetic on those prices and the stated example range, shown so you can check them.

The 400-candle range, the 60/40 split, the choice of example oils, the 4% allowance, the three-month cap and the 1.5% a month holding rate are working assumptions, not facts about your sales or CSI's. Frequently asked questions

Should I buy all my candle fragrances in 1 kg?
Only the ones that use a kilo within your months-of-cover cap. In the example range, a kilo of a slow scent lasts 5.6 months. For most CSI oils the kilo is within 1% of the 100 g per gram, so a kilo of a slow scent is mostly cash on your shelf.
How much fragrance oil should I stock for slow-selling scents?
Enough for about a month in 100 g bottles, or a 500 g bottle where the oil is meaningfully cheaper per gram at 500 g and it lasts under about three months. Never produce from 15 g testers.
How many candles do I need to sell to justify a 1 kg fragrance oil?
At 16 g per 200 g candle plus 4%, a kilo lasts three months at about 20 candles a month of that scent. Choose your own cap; the higher your sales of the scent, the safer the kilo.
Is 1 kg of fragrance oil cheaper than ten 100 g bottles?
For 52 of 91 CSI oils listing both sizes, within 1%. Twenty-four save 5% or more, such as British Rose (10.3%). Blue Ocean's kilo is fractionally dearer per gram. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? lists every saver.
How do I manage fragrance oil inventory with many scents?

Non-price figures and assumptions: The 400-candle range, the 60/40 split between five bestsellers and fifteen slow scents and the choice of example oils are illustrative; bestseller stand-ins are taken from near the top of the collection's best-selling sort, not from any sales data. Each candle is 200 g at an 8% load (16 g oil) with a 4% allowance. Average stock is half a kilo for kilo scents and half of each monthly 100 g order for 100 g scents, with steady use. The 1.5% a month holding rate and the three-month cap are examples. Catalogue statistics: 52 of 91 oils within ±1% between 100 g and 1 kg; the 15 g median premium of 23.1% is across 55 oils.
