Turn your selling price into a cost ceiling, take off the fixed materials, and let what remains set the most you can pay per gram of fragrance.
₹5.91/g
maximum fragrance oil cost in the ₹599 travel-tin example
Quick answers — read this first
How do I find my maximum cost per candle? Multiply your net price by one minus your margin target, then subtract packaging and channel fees. At ₹599, 55% and ₹40 packaging it is ₹229.55.

Why subtract the jar and wick first? They barely change with scent. Removing them first shows what wax and oil can share: ₹126.89 for a 135 g tin with an Eco C1 wick.

How do I turn that into an oil limit? Subtract the wax cost, then divide by oil grams. ₹126.89 − ₹63.02 = ₹63.87; ÷ 10.8 g = ₹5.91 per gram.

What if no oil fits? Adjust packaging, vessel, fill, oil choice and then load, in that order. If nothing works, raise the price or accept a lower margin knowingly.
The short answer
Ceiling: ₹599 × 0.45 − ₹40 = ₹229.55 in raw materials.
Oil limit: About ₹5,914 per kg with CSI 464 in a 135 g tin.
Fits: Citrus Lemon, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Woody Oud, Lavender, Bergamot Amber.

Straight answer
I Have a Finished Candle Product Idea and a Target Selling Price — How Do I Work Backwards to Determine the Raw-Material Specification and Maximum Cost per Candle?
Start from your net selling price, apply your margin target to find the total cost ceiling, subtract packaging and channel fees, then subtract the fixed materials (vessel and wick). What remains is shared between wax and oil; fix the wax and the remainder becomes a per-gram ceiling for fragrance. For an example 135 g tin at ₹599 ex-GST with a 55% margin and ₹40 packaging, raw materials may cost ₹229.55. With a ₹96.76 tin, Eco C1 and CSI 464, the oil may cost up to about ₹5.91 per gram, so Lavender fits and Dark Vanilla does not.
One line: price minus margin, packaging, vessel, wick and wax leaves a per-gram ceiling that decides which fragrance oils your candle can use.
135 g tin containers at ₹1,161.12 for 12 (₹96.76 each) give the fixed vessel cost this example is built on.

Reverse the usual order: price first, specification second

Every material on your shopping list should have to pass one test first: does it fit inside the cost ceiling your price allows?

Most makers design a candle and then discover what it costs. Working backwards does the opposite. You start from the price you intend to sell at, take out everything that is not a raw material, and arrive at a maximum cost per candle. Then you fill that budget in a fixed order, fixed costs first, so that the last decision, usually the fragrance, is made against a clear limit rather than a hope.

The method has six steps. The worked example that follows uses a travel candle in a 135 g tin, because tins have a known vessel price and make the arithmetic easy to follow. Every price and margin in it is the reader's own example figure unless it is a CSI price.

1
Write the product idea in one line.Format, fill, look and scent family. Example: a 135 g travel tin, fresh or herbal scent, plain metal finish.
2
Set the net price.Example: ₹599, the reader's figure, treated here as revenue after GST is removed. If ₹599 is a GST-inclusive shelf price, remove your applicable rate first.
3
Set the margin target.Example: 55% gross margin, the reader's figure. Maximum total cost = ₹599 × 0.45 = ₹269.55.
4
Subtract non-material costs.Example: ₹40 packaging, the reader's own quote; CSI does not sell packaging. Add any per-unit channel fee you pay here too. Maximum raw-material cost = ₹269.55 − ₹40 = ₹229.55.
5
Subtract the fixed materials. The vessel and the wick barely change with the scent, so they come off first.
6
Divide what remains between wax and oil.Fix the wax, and the remainder becomes a ceiling per gram for the fragrance oil.

Worked example: a 135 g travel tin at ₹599

Fixed materials

CSI's 135 g tin containers come in packs of 12 for ₹1,161.12, which is ₹96.76 per tin (₹1,161.12 ÷ 12). An Eco C1 wick is ₹5.90. Fixed materials: ₹102.66. That leaves ₹229.55 − ₹102.66 = ₹126.89 for wax and fragrance oil together.

Wax

At an 8% load measured on total candle weight, a 135 g candle holds 10.8 g of oil and 124.2 g of wax. In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 124.2 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹63.02. Subtract that from ₹126.89 and the oil may cost no more than ₹63.87 for 10.8 g, or ₹5.91 per gram (₹63.87 ÷ 10.8), roughly ₹5,914 per kg.

Which oils pass the ceiling

Oil ceiling test
10.8 g of oil at the 1 kg price, against a ₹63.87 ceiling (CSI 464, 135 g tin, Eco C1)
Fragrance oil 1 kg price 10.8 g costs Fits? Materials total Margin after ₹40 packaging
Citrus Lemon ₹2,832.00 ₹30.59 Yes ₹196.27 (₹599 − ₹236.27) ÷ ₹599 = 60.56%
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3,068.00 ₹33.13 Yes ₹198.81 60.13%
Woody Oud ₹4,531.20 ₹48.94 Yes ₹214.62 57.49%
Lavender ₹5,221.00 ₹56.39 Yes ₹222.07 56.25%
Bergamot Amber ₹5,437.00 ₹58.72 Yes ₹224.40 55.86%
Royal Oud ₹6,400.00 ₹69.12 No ₹234.80 54.12%
Dark Vanilla ₹7,646.00 ₹82.58 No ₹248.26 51.88%
White Royal Oud ₹8,103.00 ₹87.51 No ₹253.19 51.05%

The idea was a fresh or herbal scent, so Eucalyptus Spearmint, Citrus Lemon and Lavender are the natural shortlist. All three clear the ceiling with room to spare. If you had wanted Dark Vanilla in this tin, the method tells you, before you buy anything, that it needs a higher price, a smaller margin or a cheaper fill.

A wax upgrade changes the oil ceiling
Swap CSI 464 for CSI 468 at the 10 kg rate and the wax costs 124.2 g × ₹0.637 = ₹79.12. The oil ceiling falls to ₹126.89 − ₹79.12 = ₹47.77, about ₹4.42 per gram. Lavender and Woody Oud would no longer fit. Upstream choices always tighten the downstream ones.

Turning the numbers into a starting specification

Choosing Lavender for this example, the starting specification for testing is short enough to fit on one line of a formula sheet: 135 g tin, 124.2 g CSI 464, 10.8 g Lavender (8%), Eco C1 first and Eco C2 as the alternative. The Lavender page states a candle load of 6–10% and rates the oil Strong; flashpoint is not published, so add it at a moderate temperature and never at the melter's maximum.

CSI does not publish the tin's diameter, nor any wick sizing chart, so the wick is the one part of the specification the numbers cannot decide. Burn both candidates in the filled tin. Metal containers can become hot during a burn, so test on a heat-resistant surface, never leave a test unattended, and put out any candle that smokes or whose flame grows tall. If Eco C2 wins, the materials total rises by ₹3.54 to ₹225.61, still under the ₹229.55 ceiling.

Write the ceiling itself on the formula sheet, next to the specification. Six months from now, when someone proposes a new oil, a thicker tin or a nicer wick, the first question is simply whether the change still fits under ₹229.55, and the answer takes seconds instead of a fresh costing exercise. Recheck the ceiling whenever any of your own inputs move: a new packaging quote, a different channel fee or a price change. A ₹10 rise in packaging, for instance, lowers the oil limit by the same ₹10, which on 10.8 g is almost ₹0.93 per gram.

Testing at sample prices and then pricing at sample prices. If you cost the tin using a 100 g bottle of Lavender at ₹540.00 (₹5.40 per gram), the oil line reads ₹58.32 and the margin looks worse than it will be in production. Test with small packs, but run the backwards calculation with the pack size you will actually buy.

When the numbers do not work, pull levers in this order

Sometimes no oil you like fits the ceiling. Before abandoning the idea, work through the levers below, in roughly this order, because the first ones change the customer's experience least.

1
Packaging and channel costs. These are yours to renegotiate and are invisible during the burn.
2
Vessel.A different tin size or a jar with a lower unit price can free tens of rupees, as long as the new vessel is wick-tested from scratch.
3
Fill weight.Fewer grams lowers both wax and oil, but the customer may notice a smaller candle at the same price.
4
Fragrance oil.Choose another oil inside its stated range before you reduce the load of the one you like.
5
Load.Lower it only if burn tests show the candle still throws well, and re-test the wick at the new percentage.
6
Price or margin. If none of the above works, the product belongs at a higher price, or you accept a lower margin knowingly.

The test set costs ₹2,420.92. The 120-unit order is ₹27,771.20, slightly more than 120 × ₹222.07 because the packs leave some wax and oil over for the next batch. Your maximum cost per candle was set by your price; the shopping list simply buys the specification that fits under it.

Argue against interest
Your price should choose our products, not the other way round.
If the oil you love does not fit the ceiling, the honest options are a different oil, a different vessel or a higher price. Buying the oil anyway and hoping the margin appears is the expensive one.
The last material you choose should be chosen against the clearest limit.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the maximum cost of a candle from its selling price?
Take the price after GST, multiply by one minus your target margin, then subtract packaging and channel fees. At ₹599, 55% and ₹40 packaging, the maximum raw-material cost is ₹229.55.
How do I work out how much I can pay for fragrance oil?
Subtract vessel, wick and wax from your materials ceiling, then divide by the grams of oil per candle. In the 135 g tin example, ₹63.87 ÷ 10.8 g gives about ₹5.91 per gram.
Should I calculate margin on the price including GST?
Calculate on the amount you keep. If your shelf price includes GST, remove your applicable rate first, otherwise the ceiling will be too high and the margin will look better than it is.
Which CSI fragrance oils fit a ₹599 travel tin?
In this example, Citrus Lemon, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Woody Oud, Lavender and Bergamot Amber fit at 8% in CSI 464. Royal Oud, Dark Vanilla and White Royal Oud exceed the ceiling.
What wick should I use in a 135 g candle tin?
CSI publishes neither the tin's diameter nor a wick sizing chart. Test Eco C1 and Eco C2 in the filled tin, attended, on a heat-resistant surface, and keep the one that burns cleanly.
What should I change first if my candle costs too much?
Start with packaging and channel costs, then the vessel, fill weight, oil choice and load. Change the price or margin only if those levers do not close the gap, and re-test anything you alter.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.
