I Have a Fixed Budget — How Do I Work Backwards From My Target Candle, Price and Monthly Volume to the Exact Materials to Buy?
शेयर करना
Does CSI tell me what to charge? No. CSI sells raw materials and publishes no pricing advice, no recommended margin and no suggested retail price. Every selling price and sales figure on this page is the reader's own input, used as an input, and labelled as theirs.
What is the first number I must measure myself? The fill weight of your jar. Most jar families publish no fill capacity, and a "200 ml" jar is a volume, not a 200 g fill. Pour water or wax to your fill line and weigh it — nothing downstream is right until that number is.
What if the answer does not fit my budget? That is a real result, not a failure of the method. Change the product, the price or the volume assumption. Do not buy thinner materials and hope.
Forwards and backwards give different answers, and only one of them can say no
Forwards is what the money suggests. You open the wax page, the fragrance oils, the containers, and fill a cart until the total reaches the figure. It optimises for how many units the money buys, and because nothing in it specifies the finished candle, it delivers a cart that makes a candle nobody asked for — a wax that does not suit the jar, three scents where one would have been tested properly, a wick in the wrong thickness because it was the one in the picture.
Backwards starts at the other end. Specify the candle — one candle, completely — then cost it, apply your own selling price and volume assumption, decide how much stock to hold, and convert the whole thing into packs that exist. The budget never enters until the final stage, and when it does it enters as a test rather than a limit. The purchase is a consequence of the product; the budget either accommodates it or it does not.
What this page is not: CSI sells raw materials and publishes no pricing advice, no recommended margin, no markup rule and no suggested retail price, and forecasts demand for no scent, format or season. Every selling price below is the reader's figure used as an input; every monthly volume is their assumption, labelled as such each time. Nothing here predicts what you will sell, and no business outcome — profit, payback, growth — is implied. How Indian makers approach the retail number is a separate read; the number on your label is still yours.
The nine stages, with one worked example running through all of them
The example is a 150 g lidded jar candle in one scent, planned by a maker whose own figures are a ₹699 selling price, 120 candles a month and a ₹35,000 budget. Those three are theirs, not ours. Prices are CSI live pricing, September 2026; the linked product page is always authoritative.
Stage 8 — convert to packs that exist, and value what is left over
Now it becomes a shopping list. 133 units at 138 g of wax is 18,354 g; with the 3% illustration, 18.905 kg a month, and at two months' cover 37.810 kg. At 12 g of oil, 1,596 g becomes 1.644 kg. Jars with the 2% reject illustration: 136. Wicks at three months: 408. Then round each line up into a pack that is actually on the store — never into one that is not.
| Line | Needed | Cover chosen | Packs bought | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 18.905 kg / month | 2 months — 37.810 kg | 3 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg = 38 kg | ₹19,281.20 |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 1.644 kg / month | 1 month — 1.644 kg | 1 kg + 500 g + 100 g + 50 g = 1.650 kg | ₹5,215.60 |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 g) | 136 jars / month | 1 month — vessel not settled | 7 × pack of 20 = 140 jars | ₹14,980.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 136 / month | 3 months — 408 | 4 × 100 + 1 × 10 = 410 wicks | ₹2,419.00 |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 136 / month | 1 month | 4 sheets of 40 = 160 stickers | ₹400.00 |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | 133 / month | Pack-driven — just under 4 months | 1 × pack of 500 (1 inch) | ₹413.00 |
| CSI portion of the purchase | 133 units | Mixed, by material | Six lines | ₹42,708.80 |
| Label, box, carton, cushioning, tape | 133+ of each | Your call | Not CSI products | Price these yourself |
The leftover, valued honestly: 0.190 kg of wax (₹96.41), 6 g of oil (₹18.78), four jars (₹428.00), two wicks (₹11.80) and 24 wick stickers (₹60.00) — ₹614.99, or 1.44% of the order. Only the four jars are worth anything alone, and glass keeps, so that is carried forward rather than lost. Report leftover as a number — 1.44% means the rounding was careful; 15% means a line was rounded to a pack chosen for comfort.
Stage 8 has one output you cannot compute yet: the reorder point. Cover says how much to hold; the reorder point says when to buy again, and it is set by lead time plus your volume assumption. CSI publishes no dispatch or delivery time, so there is no number to put here — confirm it for your items on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926 before building a schedule. Once you have it, the reorder point is lead-time consumption at your own assumed monthly rate plus whatever cushion you choose. Until it is real, treat the first order as a one-off and do not promise a customer a date.
Stage 9 — the check back against the budget, and the levers in order of force
The budget is the maker's figure, like the price and the volume, and the gap is a fact about the plan. Six honest levers, ranked below by how much they actually move this order, caveats stated rather than buried.
| Lever | Change | Effect on the order | The caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · The jar | ₹107.00 lidded jar → 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (Golden Lid) at ₹29.50 in 50s and 100s | −₹10,555.00 (150 jars for ₹4,425.00 against 140 for ₹14,980.00) | Not like-for-like: different capacity, different look, and "200 ml" is a volume, so the fill weight must be re-measured — which restarts the chain at stage 1. A product change, not a saving |
| 2 · The wax | CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg → Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399.00/kg | −₹4,119.20 (38 kg for ₹15,162.00 against ₹19,281.20) — 9.6% of the order | Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes no fragrance-load ceiling at all, so no load can be described as sitting inside one. Its ladder stops at 5 kg, and its 5 kg is ₹0.20/kg dearer than its 1 kg — so 38 × 1 kg (₹15,162.00) beats 7 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg (₹15,169.00) by ₹7.00. A wax change is a formulation change: re-test first |
| 3 · The volume assumption | 120 a month → 80 a month (the maker's revised assumption) | −₹12,262.40 to ₹30,446.40 — comfortably inside ₹35,000 | A 33.3% cut in assumed volume cuts the order only 28.7%, because the 13 non-sellable units do not scale down and the packs still round up. Lowering an assumption to fit a budget is honest only if the lower number is the one you believe |
| 4 · Number of scents | 1 scent → 3 scents at 45 units each | +₹483.80 on the fragrance line alone (3 × ₹1,899.80 against ₹5,215.60) for the same candle count | Each scent rounds up its own pack ladder and carries its own burn tests and retained samples, so leftover roughly triples. Three scents is a marketing decision paid for out of the materials budget |
| 5 · The fragrance choice | British Rose ₹3.068/g → Citrus Lemon ₹2.832/g, the cheapest per gram in the catalogue | −₹493.60 (₹4,722.00 against ₹5,215.60) — 1.16% of the order | The cheapest oil in a 92-oil catalogue moves this order by barely one percent. Oil is rarely where the money is on a small candle |
| 6 · The fragrance load | 8% of finished weight → 6% of finished weight | −₹743.40 — 1.74% of the order | Per candle it looks like ₹7.69 (₹223.07 → ₹215.38), but the order barely moves: the oil you remove is replaced by wax, and wax is held at two months' cover against fragrance's one. The lever that promises most and delivers least |
Read that table in order and the shape of the problem is obvious. The jar is the largest single line on a small candle — ₹107.00 of a ₹223.07 build, 48% of the materials — so it dominates every other lever put together. The two levers makers reach for first, the oil and the load, move this order by 1.16% and 1.74%. Shaving the load from 8% to 6% makes the candle weaker for ₹743.40 on a ₹42,708.80 order, and probably creates the complaint that consumes stage 7's replacement units.
The whole chain as a table you can refill with your own numbers
Copy the left two columns onto one sheet and work down. The third shows a filled-in row — not a template to adopt. Rows 3, 4 and 9 are yours and only yours.
| Stage | What you fill in | The worked example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Product | Jar and pack size · measured fill weight in grams · wax · wick · load with its denominator in words | Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 g), ₹107.00 each, lid included · 150 g measured · CSI 464 · Eco Wick Thin (C1) · 8% of finished weight = 12 g oil + 138 g wax |
| 2 · Cost per candle | Every CSI line at live prices, then the non-CSI lines named and left blank | ₹107.00 + ₹70.02 + ₹36.82 + ₹5.90 + ₹2.50 + ₹0.83 = ₹223.07; label, box, carton, cushioning, tape = not CSI, price elsewhere |
| 3 · Selling price (yours) | Your price. Then what is left after materials, and the list of costs it still has to cover | ₹699 − ₹223.07 = ₹475.93 before labour, freight, fees, returns, tax and packaging. No margin recommended |
| 4 · Monthly volume (yours) | Your planning assumption, written as an assumption | 120 sellable a month — the maker's assumption, not a forecast |
| 5 · Cover | Months of cover per material, with the reason written next to each | Wax 2 (fungible) · fragrance 1 (specific, traps cash) · jars 1 (vessel unsettled) · wicks 3 (flat-priced, nearly free) |
| 6 · Loss | Your measured transfer loss and your counted jar rejects | 3% transfer and 2% jar rejects, both illustrations. CSI publishes no wastage figure |
| 7 · Non-sellable units | Burn tests + retained samples + replacement allowance | 6 + 4 + 3 = 13, so 133 units to pour, not 120 |
| 8 · Packs | Each line rounded up into a pack that exists, with the leftover valued | 38 kg + 1.650 kg + 140 jars + 410 wicks + 160 wick stickers + 500 care stickers = ₹42,708.80, CSI portion only; leftover ₹614.99 (1.44%) |
| 9 · Budget check (yours) | Your budget. Over or under? If over, which lever — and are you willing to change the product? | ₹35,000 budget, ₹7,708.80 over. Jar change −₹10,555.00 but a different candle; volume assumption 120 → 80 −₹12,262.40. Conclusion: not at this price and this volume |
One last honesty note, because it is the point of the cluster. Running this method properly tends to shrink the order. It replaces a comfortable round-number purchase with 38 kilograms rather than 50, one scent rather than three, and a first order sized to a volume the maker can defend. Sometimes it concludes that no order should be placed this month at all — that the right spend is a handful of 15 g and 50 g fragrance bottles and six jars, to settle a formula that is not settled, because dead stock is the real enemy at these budgets. All of those mean CSI sells less this month. We publish the method anyway: the maker who orders correctly three times is worth more than the one who over-orders once and stops.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and sells no pricing advice of any kind. That matters on a page built around a selling price. The ₹699 and the 120 candles a month above are the reader's own figures, used as inputs and labelled as theirs at every step. CSI publishes no recommended margin, markup rule, retail price or demand forecast; nothing here predicts what any maker will sell, and no business outcome is promised.
It also matters that the method shrinks orders: stage 9's honest output here is that the specified candle does not fit the stated budget at the stated price. CSI publishes no MOQ, slab, rate card, quantity discount, credit term, dispatch or delivery time, and no wastage or breakage figure, so none appear above — percentages are marked as illustrations, and where a lead time would be needed the page says to ask.
Every price, pack size and ceiling here is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, which is always authoritative. The 10% and 13% loads are stated by the wax manufacturers for CSI 464 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and not interchangeable between waxes.
