I Need Several Kilograms of One Fragrance for a Corporate Order — Should I Test the Bulk Fragrance Batch Against My Original Sample Before Production?
शेयर करना
What if I used up the original sample? Then the approved candle is your reference, if you still have it. Next time, keep back at least 16 g of the sample oil, enough for one reference candle, sealed and labelled in a cool, dark place. Buying the sample as 50 g rather than 15 g makes that easy.
Can bulk fragrance smell different from the sample? It can, for several reasons: an aged or warm-stored sample, a different production lot, a test candle made differently from the approved one, or simply a tired nose. CSI does not publish lot information, so the side-by-side comparison is how you find out.
What do I do if they don't match? Stop before production. Re-check that the test candles were made identically. If the difference remains, message CSI on WhatsApp with the product, bottle details, photos and what you observed, and resolve it before pouring the order.
Why bulk and sample can differ
The example is a corporate client who approved a Raat Ki Rani candle in July, from a small bottle, and has now ordered 300 × 200 g candles in White Matte Glass Jars with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 8%. Several months and one bulk delivery separate the approval from production. Here is what can change in that gap, in general candle-making practice:
| Cause | What happens | How the test catches it |
|---|---|---|
| The sample has aged | A small bottle opened often, or stored somewhere warm, can drift from how it smelled when fresh | Compare the sample's smell strip with the bulk strip. An aged sample often smells flatter or sharper than the fresh bulk |
| A different production lot | Fragrance oils are made in batches, and slight differences between batches are possible | Colour, strips and test candles side by side |
| A different candle | The approval candle used another wax, wick, load, jar or cure time | Rebuild the reference candle exactly, and make the bulk test candles the same way |
| A tired nose | After smelling one scent for a while, the nose adapts and comparisons become unreliable | Blind scoring by two or three people, with fresh air between rounds |
Only one of those four is about the supplier. The other three are about your own reference and your method. That is why the test has to be structured. Without it you can't tell a genuine difference from a stale sample or a candle that was made differently.
Keep a reference you can test against
The test depends on something most makers throw away: the rest of the sample. A 15 g bottle scents less than one 200 g candle at 8%, since the candle needs 16 g. Once the approval candle is poured, nothing is left to compare with. That is why the sample size matters on an order like this:
| Sample bought | Price | Per gram | After one approval candle | Enough for a reference candle? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹130.00 | ₹8.67 | Not enough for even one 200 g candle | No — the approved candle itself becomes the only reference |
| 50 g | ₹370.00 | ₹7.40 | 34 g left | Yes — two reference candles |
| 100 g | ₹700.00 | ₹7.00 | 84 g left | Yes — and enough for a second client round |
For a corporate or wedding order, the 50 g sample is the sensible buy: ₹240.00 more than the 15 g, and it leaves 34 g to test against. Seal the remainder in a small glass bottle, label it with the product name, the date and "approved sample, client X", and store it cool and dark. Keep the approved candle as well, unburned and lidded. Together they are your reference. The four checks
Steps 1 to 3 take an hour on the day the oil arrives, and they catch obvious problems before you have spent anything more. Step 4 takes as long as your cure, which isn't published for these waxes, so use the cure you will use in production. That time has to be in the schedule. I've Received My First Large Corporate Candle Order — Which Raw Materials Have the Longest Lead Times and Should be Secured First? explains why the bulk oil should arrive early enough to test, and I Have a Large Candle Order with a Strict Delivery Date — How Much Extra Raw-Material Inventory Should I Keep in Case of Rejects or Supplier Delays? builds the test pour into a backward plan from the delivery date.
The blind scoring sheet
| Check | A | B | C | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lid-off smell (cold): same as the approved candle? 1 = very different, 5 = identical | ||||
| Smell after 1 hour burning in a closed room, 1–5 | ||||
| Strength: weaker / same / stronger than the approved candle | ||||
| Character: anything missing or new? (describe) | ||||
| Surface and colour of the wax: any visible difference? | ||||
| Would you accept this as the client's candle? Yes / No |
Use two or three scorers if you can: yourself, someone who hasn't smelled the scent all week, and ideally someone from the client's side. Score the cold smell first and burn afterwards. Air the room between rounds. When the key is revealed, the bulk candles should score close to the reference. If one bulk candle scores clearly lower on "same as approved" across all scorers, that bottle, or the batch, needs a closer look.
The gate: pass, doubt or fail
Decide in advance what each result means, so the decision isn't made under deadline pressure:
| Result | What you saw | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pass | All four checks agree; blind scores for bulk within a point of the reference | Release the oil to production. File the scoring sheets with the order. |
| Doubt | One check differs (for example, a colour shift) but scent scores agree | Repeat step 3 with a fresh nose. If scent still agrees, proceed and note the difference. If unsure, ask us on WhatsApp first. |
| Fail | Scent scores clearly lower for bulk across scorers, or a missing or new note is noticed by more than one person | Do not pour. Re-check that the candles were made identically. Then message CSI with the product, bottle numbers, photos and the scoring results. |
| Reference suspect | The retained sample itself smells aged or flat next to the approved candle | Compare the bulk with the approved candle instead, and check with the client if needed. |
Put the numbers side by side. The three test candles cost ₹895.92. The 300-candle order commits ₹93,646.00 of materials plus example labour of ₹4,500.00, about ₹98,146.00 in all. The test is 0.91% of that, which is the cheapest insurance on the job. After the order ships, keep the retained sample, the approved candle and the scoring sheets together until the client has accepted delivery. If they reorder next year, the same routine applies, and last year's reference is part of it. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier can easily say that its bulk oil always matches its samples. We don't publish lot data, so this page gives you a way to check for yourself, and asks you to tell us if anything doesn't match, before it reaches your client.

The causes of mismatch, the smell-strip timings and the scoring method are general practice, not CSI measurements. The labour figure and allowances are examples or working assumptions.
