I Need to Give a Bulk Candle Price for 100, 500 and 1,000 Pieces — How Do I Calculate Quantity Discounts Without Accidentally Eliminating My Margin?
शेयर करना
Do raw materials get cheaper at 1,000 candles? Barely, on CSI's listed packs. For a 200 g Lavender candle the material bill works out at ₹289.84 per candle at 100 and ₹282.45 at 1,000, a 2.5% fall that comes mostly from less leftover. Wax, wicks and this jar are priced flat per unit. Larger volumes are quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published.
Where does a real bulk discount come from, then? From costs that are fixed per order or get faster per piece. In our example, a ₹4,000.00 set-up cost is ₹40.00 a candle at 100 and ₹4.00 at 1,000, and labour drops from ₹17.50 to ₹11.25 (example figures). Total cost falls 11.7%.
What is the most common way makers lose margin on bulk? Taking 10%, 20% and 30% off a retail price. At 1,000 pieces, 30% off ₹799.00 is ₹559.30, which sits below the example floor price of ₹625.33 for a 40% gross margin. See the percentage trap.
What materials actually cost at 100, 500 and 1,000
The example candle is the working standard used across this series: a 200 g container candle at an 8% fragrance load, so 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. The oil is Lavender Fragrance Oil, which sits at the top of the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort. The wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, the wick an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 and the jar a White Matte Glass Jar. At list rates that is ₹83.54 of oil at the 1 kg rate, ₹110.22 of wax, ₹5.90 of wick and ₹70.80 of jar, or ₹270.46 per candle before any waste.
A real order never buys exactly 16 g times the number of candles, though. You buy whole packs, you allow for pour loss and test burns, and you keep a few spare wicks and jars. The table below does that for each tier. It uses a 4% allowance on wax and oil, 5% spare wicks and 2% spare jars, all working assumptions. It then picks the cheapest combination of production-size packs (100 g and up for oil, 5 kg and 10 kg for wax) that covers the need. Every price is CSI's live listing.
| Pieces | Lavender oil bought | Soy Wax Chunks bought | Wicks and jars | Material bill | Per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g = ₹8,921.00 (1.7 kg) | 4 × 5 kg = ₹11,980.00 | 110 wicks ₹649.00 · 105 jars ₹7,434.00 | ₹28,984.00 | ₹289.84 |
| 500 | 8 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g = ₹43,928.00 (8.4 kg) | 20 × 5 kg = ₹59,900.00 | 530 wicks ₹3,127.00 · 510 jars ₹36,108.00 | ₹1,43,063.00 | ₹286.13 |
| 1,000 | 16 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g = ₹87,236.00 (16.7 kg) | 39 × 5 kg = ₹1,16,805.00 | 1,050 wicks ₹6,195.00 · 1,020 jars ₹72,216.00 | ₹2,82,452.00 | ₹282.45 |
From 100 to 1,000 pieces the material cost per candle falls by ₹7.39, or 2.5%. Almost all of that is rounding. A 100-piece order leaves more oil and wax over in the last pack than a 1,000-piece order does, so each candle carries a little more leftover. None of it comes from a lower price per gram. Lavender is ₹5.40 a gram at 100 g and ₹5.22 at 1 kg. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo in a 5 kg bag and ₹599.90 a kilo in a 10 kg bag, so two 5 kg bags cost ₹9.00 less than one 10 kg bag. Eco Thin C1 wicks are ₹5.90 each from the 10-pack to the 1,000-pack, and the White Matte Jar is ₹70.80 in its pack of five.
The costs that do fall with volume
If materials stay flat, the discount has to come from somewhere else. There are three places it can honestly come from, and you can put a number on each one. Which costs decrease with volume and which stay the same takes every cost line apart in detail. For pricing tiers you need only these three.
| Cost line | How it behaves | 100 pieces | 500 pieces | 1,000 pieces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Order set-up (example: samples, test burns, artwork sign-off, approval courier) | Fixed per order: ₹4,000.00 | ₹40.00 | ₹8.00 | ₹4.00 |
| Labour (example: ₹150.00 an hour) | Falls as batches get longer | 7.0 min · ₹17.50 | 5.0 min · ₹12.50 | 4.5 min · ₹11.25 |
| Packaging: gift box (example ₹65.00), label (example ₹6.00), CSI tissue sheet ₹6.50 | Flat unless your printer quotes a run price | ₹77.50 | ₹77.50 | ₹77.50 |
| Materials (CSI listed packs, from the table above) | Nearly flat | ₹289.84 | ₹286.13 | ₹282.45 |
| Cost per candle | ₹424.84 | ₹384.13 | ₹375.20 |
Set-up is the cleanest source of discount. Test pours, a sample set sent for approval, the artwork proof and the time spent on calls cost roughly the same whether the order is 100 or 1,000. In the example, ₹4,000.00 is ₹40.00 on each of 100 candles and ₹4.00 on each of 1,000. The tissue sheet is a real CSI price: Premium Packing Tissue Paper is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets. The box and label are placeholders, and printed packaging is where your own suppliers may genuinely price by run length. If your printer quotes a lower box price at 1,000, put that into the 1,000 column. If they do not, leave the line flat.
Labour is the second source, and the one makers most often guess. Longer runs of one scent in one jar mean fewer changeovers, fewer jug cleanings and a steadier rhythm. The example assumes 7 minutes of hands-on time per candle at 100 pieces, falling to 4.5 at 1,000. Time your own next batch with a phone stopwatch, from weighing wax to capping the finished jar, divide by the number of candles, and use that figure. If your process is already a long single-scent run at 100 pieces, labour will not fall much and neither should your price.
Building the price ladder
The floor price is the lowest price that still meets the minimum gross margin you have set for your business. This page uses 40% gross margin on selling price as the example floor, but the right figure is yours to choose. Gross margin is profit divided by selling price. Markup is profit divided by cost. They are different numbers for the same deal, and the two get mixed up in almost every pricing argument. A 40% gross margin is a 66.7% markup. The floor is cost divided by (1 − 0.40).
| Pieces | Cost per candle | Floor (40% GM) | Quote | Gross margin | Markup | Profit on the order |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | ₹424.84 | ₹708.07 | ₹799.00 | 46.8% | 88.1% | ₹37,416.00 |
| 500 | ₹384.13 | ₹640.22 | ₹755.00 | 49.1% | 96.5% | ₹1,85,435.00 |
| 1,000 | ₹375.20 | ₹625.33 | ₹749.00 | 49.9% | 99.6% | ₹3,73,800.00 |
Read the last column rather than the percentages. The 1,000-piece quote looks like only a 6.3% discount, yet it earns ₹3,73,800.00 against ₹37,416.00 for the 100-piece order. Margin percentage actually rises slightly with volume here, because cost fell a little faster than price. That is a ladder you can defend. It also shows the client the logic: the bigger order gets a lower price, and the reason can be explained in one line.
Many corporate buyers expect a bigger visible step than that. You can offer one, but it has to be paid for, either by giving up part of the gap above the floor, or by changing the product at the bigger tier. The next two sections deal with each.
The percentage trap
The usual shortcut is 10% off for 100, 20% off for 500 and 30% off for 1,000, taken from the retail price. It feels generous and standard, and it has no link to your costs. Here is the same example candle priced that way:
| Pieces | Discount | Price | Cost | Gross margin | Below the 40% floor? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 10% | ₹719.10 | ₹424.84 | 40.9% | No |
| 500 | 20% | ₹639.20 | ₹384.13 | 39.9% | Yes — by ₹1.02 |
| 1,000 | 30% | ₹559.30 | ₹375.20 | 32.9% | Yes — by ₹66.03 |
The maximum discount off ₹799.00 that keeps each tier at a 40% gross margin is 11.4% at 100, 19.9% at 500 and 21.7% at 1,000. Those are ceilings, not targets. If a client pushes you to the ceiling, you have nothing left to cover a broken jar carton, a scent re-test or a late courier. When the client still wants lower
A corporate buyer often has a budget per gift, not a view on your costs. You can meet a lower number honestly by offering a different specification at the bigger tier, as long as the client approves it. Three levers are usually available. Oil tier: swapping Lavender for British Rose at 1,000 pieces saves ₹35.87 a candle on oil at listed prices. Fill size: a smaller candle carries less wax and oil, though the jar and packaging cost the same, so the saving is smaller than the size cut suggests. Packaging: a simpler box is often the biggest single saving on a gift order, and your printer's quote decides it. | Change | Cost per candle | Price at a constant rupee profit | What the client gives up |
|---|---|---|---|
| As quoted (Lavender, 200 g, gift box) | ₹375.20 | ₹749.00 | — |
| Oil to British Rose | ₹339.33 | ₹713.13 | A different scent family: a floral rather than a herbal |
| Gift box to a simpler box (example: saves ₹30.00) | ₹345.20 | ₹719.00 | Presentation, which can matter a great deal for gifting |
| Both changes | ₹309.33 | ₹683.13 | Both of the above |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹105.02 | ₹7.00 | 0.94 |
| 100 g | ₹540.00 | ₹5.40 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹2,620.00 | ₹5.24 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,221.00 | ₹5.22 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹94.40 | ₹6.29 | 0.94 |
| 100 g | ₹342.20 | ₹3.42 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.07 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Candles at 184 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹299.00 | ₹598.00 | 2.72 |
| 1 kg | ₹599.00 | ₹599.00 | 5.43 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 | ₹599.00 | 27.17 |
| 10 kg | ₹5,999.00 | ₹599.90 | 54.35 |
Two final checks before the quote goes out. First, make sure the tiers are separate orders in your costing, not one production run split three ways. A client who orders 100 now and 900 later has given you two set-ups, and the second should carry its own set-up cost. Second, check that your buying plan matches the tier. A Customer Wants 500 Custom Candles — How Much Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Should I Buy Before Starting Production? and A Corporate Customer Wants 2,000 Candles in One Fragrance — How Do I Calculate How Many Kilograms of Fragrance Oil I Need Before Placing the Raw-Material Order? cover how much to buy for a 500-piece order and how to size the oil order for a very large single-scent run.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A page on bulk pricing is an easy place to suggest that ordering more from us will fund your discounts. On our listed prices it mostly will not, so this page shows the flat material line, names the one oil in the example with a real kilo break, and puts the discount where it belongs: in your set-up and labour.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, and the tissue paper price was pulled 24–25 September 2026. The pack combinations are the cheapest whole-pack mix of production sizes covering each quantity. Per-candle figures are plain arithmetic, shown to two decimals so you can check them.
Set-up, labour, box and label figures are examples to replace with your own quotes and timings. So is the 40% floor, which is a business choice, not a rule. The 4% allowance on wax and oil and the spare-wick and spare-jar counts are working assumptions.
