When to Buy Bulk · One Oil at 500 g a Month
Five 100 g bottles a month is a sign you have outgrown the 100 g. The surprise is what the bigger packs actually save. For half the catalogue, nothing per gram. For a few oils, a fifth of the bill. For two oils, the kilo costs a third more than two 500 g bottles.

extra average stock from switching five 100 g bottles to one 500 g bottle at 500 g a month · same cash on the shelf, one bottle, often a lower rate · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
When should I stop buying 100 g bottles? Now. At 500 g a month, one 500 g bottle bought monthly keeps exactly the same average stock (250 g) as five 100 g bottles bought monthly, so it costs nothing extra in cash tied up. It is never dearer per gram except for one oil, Love Spell.

Does the 500 g save money? It depends on the oil. Of 62 oils with both sizes in stock, 31 cost within 1% per gram at 500 g and 100 g, and 16 save 5% or more. Mango Coconut saves ₹518.00 a month at your usage; Lavender saves ₹80.00.

Should I go straight to 1 kg? Only if the kilo is cheaper per gram for your oil or you want two months of stock. A 1 kg every two months doubles your average stock to 500 g. For Lavender that costs ₹19.51 a month extra at an example 1.5% holding rate, against a saving of ₹9.50.

Is 1 kg ever worse than 500 g? Yes. Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood list 500 g at ₹2,584.20 and 1 kg at ₹6,867.60. Two 500 g bottles cost ₹1,699.20 less than the kilo. See pack traps.
The short answer
At 500 g a month: Buy the 500 g monthly as the default. It holds the same average stock as five 100 g bottles and costs the same or less per gram for every in-stock oil except Love Spell.
Move to 1 kg when: The kilo is cheaper per gram for that oil (Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Forever Red), or you want two months of cover for a proven seller.
Avoid: The 1 kg of Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood: ₹6.87 a gram against ₹5.17 at 500 g. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? covers the 1 kg question across all oils.

500 g of one oil a month — how much sits on your shelf under three buying habits Stock level over four months, steady use of 500 g a month. Five 100 g bottles bought together once a month and one 500 g bottle bought once a month give the same stock curve: 500 g at the peak, 250 g on average. Only the 1 kg every two months doubles it. The pack you buy decides the rate per gram; how often you buy decides the cash on your shelf.
Straight answer
I use 500 g of one fragrance oil every month. When should I stop buying 100 g bottles and move to 500 g or 1 kg packs?
Stop now and make the 500 g your default. At 500 g a month, five 100 g bottles bought together and one 500 g bottle hold exactly the same stock: 500 g when it arrives, 250 g on average. So the switch costs nothing in cash tied up. It is never dearer per gram, with one exception (Love Spell, where the 500 g is ₹5.00 a gram against ₹4.49 for the 100 g). Whether it saves money depends on the oil. On CSI's listed prices, pulled 24 September 2026, 31 of 62 oils with both sizes in stock cost within 1% per gram either way, and 16 save 5% or more. Mango Coconut saves ₹518.00 a month at your usage; Lavender saves ₹80.00. The 1 kg is a separate decision. Buying it every two months doubles your average stock, so it is worth it only when the kilo is clearly cheaper per gram, as for Pumpkin Spice (10.0%), or when you want two months of cover for a proven seller. For two oils, Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood, the kilo costs ₹1,699.20 more than two 500 g bottles.
One line: at 500 g a month, the 500 g bottle is free to switch to — the kilo is the decision that needs a number.
If your 500 g-a-month oil is Mango Coconut, the switch is worth ₹6,216.00 a year: one 500 g at ₹1,982.00 against five 100 g bottles at ₹2,500.00, every month, for the same oil and the same stock on your shelf.

Why 500 g costs no extra shelf space

The fear with a bigger bottle is dead stock. At 500 g a month, a 500 g bottle cannot become dead stock any faster than five small ones.

Makers hesitate over the 500 g because it feels like committing to a scent. But if you already buy five 100 g bottles of the same oil every month, you have already committed. The only difference is how many bottles the oil comes in. When you use the oil steadily, stock on your shelf falls from 500 g on delivery day to nothing at the end of the month, whichever bottles it arrived in. On average you hold 250 g. That average is what your cash is tied up in, and it is the same under both habits.

There is a version of the 100 g habit that holds less stock: buying one 100 g bottle every six days or so. That keeps only about 50 g on the shelf on average, but it means five orders a month, five sets of packing and five chances of a delay on your best-selling scent. For most small businesses the ordering effort and the risk of running out outweigh the small cash saving. I'm Paying Shipping Separately Every Time I Reorder Small Quantities — How Do I Calculate Whether Larger Raw-Material Orders Would Actually be Cheaper? works through per-order delivery cost if you are paying for each shipment.

A month of one oil, in candles
At an 8% load, a 200 g container candle holds 16 g of oil. 500 g a month is 31.25 candles of that scent, and a 1 kg bottle is 62.5 candles. Put that way, a kilo is two months of one scent for you, which is short enough for a proven seller and long enough to be a mistake on a scent you are still unsure of.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more kilos if we told you that 1 kg is always the next step after 500 g. For most oils it is not cheaper per gram, and it doubles the stock you hold. For two oils in our range it costs a third more per gram than the 500 g. Buy the kilo when the numbers for your oil say so, not because it is the biggest bottle.

Eight oils, three ways to buy 500 g a month

Here is the title question priced for eight real oils. Each row buys 500 g a month for a year of steady use. The 1 kg column is the kilo price divided by two, because one kilo lasts you two months. The holding-cost column is what the kilo's extra 250 g of average stock costs at an example holding rate of 1.5% a month (18% a year). That rate is a placeholder for your own cost of money and storage, not a market figure.

British Rose ₹1,711.00 ₹1,593.00 ₹1,534.00 ₹11.06 / month 1 kg every 2 months
Jasmine ₹2,150.00 ₹1,961.00 ₹1,961.50 ₹14.71 / month 500 g

Saffron Cedarwood ₹3,481.00 ₹2,584.20 ₹3,433.80 ₹32.13 / month 500 g
Love Spell ₹2,245.00 ₹2,499.00 ₹2,249.50 ₹15.00 / month 5 × 100 g

The table falls into four groups. Flat oils such as Sandalwood cost the same at every size (₹502.68 per 100 g, ₹2,513.40 per 500 g, ₹5,026.80 per kg), so the 500 g buys you one bottle instead of five and the kilo only adds holding cost. Nearly flat oils such as Lavender save a little at 500 g (₹80.00 a month) and a little more at 1 kg (₹9.50), which is less than the kilo's extra holding cost of ₹19.51. 500 g savers such as Mango Coconut and Jasmine make the whole saving at 500 g and nothing more at 1 kg. 1 kg savers such as Pumpkin Spice save nothing at 500 g and 10.0% at 1 kg.

Look at British Rose, near the top of CSI's best-selling sort. It saves ₹118.00 a month at 500 g and another ₹59.00 a month at 1 kg, against ₹11.06 of extra holding. For that oil, the kilo is a sound choice at 500 g a month. Now look at Love Spell. Its 500 g costs more per gram than its 100 g (₹2,499.00 against five 100 g bottles at ₹2,245.00), while its kilo is back down at ₹4.50 a gram. The listed ladder is not always a smooth slope, which is why this page prices each oil rather than giving you a rule of thumb.

What the 500 g does to the price per gram, across the catalogue

Dearer at 500 g 1 Love Spell ₹4.49 → ₹5.00

So the honest summary for the 500 g step matches what the rest of this cluster finds for other steps: about half the catalogue is priced linearly, and the savings are concentrated in a minority of oils. The step that is reliable across almost every oil is the one below this, from 15 g to 50 g or 100 g, where the 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram. If any of your production is still poured from 15 g testers, fix that first. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? takes the same analysis up to the kilo for all 91 oils that list both sizes.

When the kilo earns its place

A kilo is two months of one scent at your usage. It needs a reason stronger than "bulk is cheaper".

There are three good reasons to buy a kilo at 500 g a month. The first is a real per-gram saving at 1 kg that beats the extra holding cost. For Pumpkin Spice, the kilo saves ₹295.00 a month against ₹17.70 of extra holding, about ₹3,540.00 a year before holding. The second is stock security for a scent you cannot afford to run out of, especially before a festive peak. The third is fewer orders if each order costs you delivery, time or both. If none of these applies, the 500 g every month is the leaner choice.

One oil at 500 g a month · example holding 1.5% a month — replace with your own
Kilo decision, three oils
Oil ₹/g at 500 g ₹/g at 1 kg Monthly saving from the kilo Extra holding for the kilo Net per month Verdict
Pumpkin Spice ₹5.90 ₹5.31 ₹295.00 ₹17.70 ₹277.30 Kilo pays
Lavender ₹5.24 ₹5.22 ₹9.50 ₹19.51 -₹10.01 Kilo costs slightly more once holding is counted — choose on convenience
Sandalwood ₹5.03 ₹5.03 ₹0.00 ₹18.85 -₹18.85 Kilo costs a little — buy it only for security

The sums are small at this scale, and that is the point. At 500 g a month of one oil, the pack decision is worth tens of rupees a month for most oils and a few hundred for the handful with real breaks. It is not worth risking two months of an unproven scent to capture. Where the money genuinely moves is the choice of oil itself: at 16 g a candle, the difference between a ₹3.07-a-gram oil and a ₹7.65-a-gram oil is ₹73.28 on every candle, far more than any pack step.

The CSI principle
Let the oil's own price ladder pick the pack.
Some oils break at 500 g, some at 1 kg, some never, and two get dearer at 1 kg. A single rule such as "move to the kilo at 500 g a month" is right for some oils and wrong for others. Price your oil at each listed size, then add the holding cost of the bigger bottle.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. If your 500 g-a-month oil is a festive seller, October use can double, and a kilo bought now is about a month of festive cover rather than two months of ordinary cover. Check stock on your size today, since popular sizes can sell out close to the season. Quotes above 1 kg, GST invoicing and IFRA documentation are on WhatsApp.

Pack traps — where bigger costs more

Two oils on CSI's list break the usual pattern hard. Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood are both listed at ₹696.20 per 100 g, ₹2,584.20 per 500 g and ₹6,867.60 per kg. Per gram that is ₹6.96, ₹5.17 and ₹6.87. The 500 g is the cheapest way to buy either oil by a wide margin, and two 500 g bottles cost ₹5,168.40 against ₹6,867.60 for the kilo, a difference of ₹1,699.20 on the same kilogram. At 500 g a month that is ₹10,195.20 a year you would pay for choosing the bigger bottle.

The mistake that looks like a bulk saving. Buying the biggest listed bottle on autopilot. For Saffron Cedarwood, Sage and Cedarwood and, at the 500 g step, Love Spell, the bigger pack is the dearer one per gram. Before every reorder, divide each listed price by its grams. It takes a minute and it is the only way to catch the exceptions, which is also why prices on the product page always override this guide.

A smaller trap is buying a size that is out of stock on paper. Vetiver lists a 1 kg at ₹5,664.00, but it was out of stock on the pull date; its 500 g at ₹2,900.00 was in stock. Chocolate Fudge had its 100 g out of stock but the 500 g at ₹1,982.40 in stock. A price you cannot buy is not a price. Check the size you plan around before you build a costing on it.

Making the switch

1
Confirm the 500 g figure is steadyCheck three months of use for the oil. If it swings from 300 g to 700 g, plan on the average and keep a 100 g as a top-up. If it is climbing each month, read My Candle Sales Are Growing Every Month — How Do I Know When Buying Larger Raw-Material Quantities Saves Money Rather than Creating Excess Stock? first.
2
Price your oil at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kgDivide each listed price by its grams. Note whether the break is at 500 g, at 1 kg, at both or at neither, and whether any size is out of stock.
3
Switch to one 500 g a monthUnless your oil is Love Spell, this costs the same or less per gram and holds the same average stock. Time the first 500 g order for when your last 100 g bottle is about half used.
4
Test the kilo against its holding costWork out the monthly saving from the kilo's per-gram price and subtract the cost of an extra 250 g of average stock at your own holding rate. If the result is clearly positive, or the scent needs stock security, move to the kilo.
5
Keep one bottle in reserve over festive peaksYour normal rhythm leaves you near zero at month end. Before Diwali or the November–February wedding season, carry one extra 500 g as a buffer rather than jumping to several kilos.
6
Ask for a quote above 1 kgIf one oil climbs past a kilo a month, ask CSI on WhatsApp for a price on a larger quantity. No volume discount figure is published, so ask for a price per gram and compare it with the listed kilo.

The three oils below show the three patterns you are most likely to meet: a big 500 g saving, a saving only at 1 kg, and a kilo trap.

Freshness, storage and the second month

Buying a kilo means the second 500 g waits a month on your shelf, opened. In general practice, fragrance oil is kept tightly capped, in the dark and away from heat, and a bottle that is opened and closed daily is exposed to more air than a sealed one. Shelf life and storage advice differ by oil and are not published in the data this page uses. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for the oil's documentation and storage guidance before you commit to months of stock of a single oil.

A simple way to limit the risk is to decant. When a kilo arrives, pour the second half into a clean, dry, well-sealed bottle straight away and leave it closed until you need it. Label it with the oil and the delivery date. That way the kilo behaves like two sealed 500 g bottles on your shelf, while you keep the kilo's price where it is lower. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a page about buying bigger bottles, the convenient advice for us would be "go to the kilo". Our own listed prices say the kilo is no cheaper per gram for many oils and is dearer than two 500 g bottles for Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood, so this page says so and prices the exceptions.

Every oil price on this page is CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026, across the Fragrance Oils collection. Out-of-stock sizes are flagged rather than priced as buyable. Monthly costs, per-gram prices, average stock and the 62-oil comparison of 100 g against 500 g are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 500 g monthly usage comes from the title. The 16 g per 200 g candle at 8%, steady use, and the example holding cost of 1.5% a month are working assumptions, not facts about your business. Replace them with your own figures. For a quote above 1 kg, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Is 500 g fragrance oil cheaper than 100 g?
Per gram, for some oils. Of 62 CSI oils with both sizes in stock, 31 are within 1%, 16 save 5% or more (Citronella, Saffron Cedarwood, Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut and Verbena save the most), and one, Love Spell, costs more per gram at 500 g.
How long does 500 g of fragrance oil last?
At an 8% load in a 200 g candle, 500 g scents 31.25 candles. How long that lasts depends on how many of that scent you pour. At 500 g a month it is one month; at 250 g a month it is two.
When should I buy 1 kg of fragrance oil?
When the kilo is clearly cheaper per gram for that oil and the saving beats the cost of holding the extra stock, or when you need stock security for a proven seller. Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Forever Red all save 7% or more at 1 kg over 500 g.
Why is 1 kg of some fragrance oils more expensive per gram than 500 g?
That is how those listings are priced on the pull date. Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood are ₹5.17 a gram at 500 g and ₹6.87 at 1 kg. Always divide each listed price by its grams before you reorder, and treat the product page as authoritative.
How do I store a big bottle of candle fragrance oil?
In general practice: tightly capped, in the dark, away from heat. Decant half of a kilo into a clean, sealed bottle when it arrives so the second half stays closed. Storage and shelf-life guidance differs by oil; ask CSI on WhatsApp for the oil's documentation.
Does CSI give discounts for buying more fragrance oil?
The listed packs go up to 1 kg per oil, and no volume discount figure is published. For more than a kilo of one oil, ask on WhatsApp for a price per gram and compare it with the listed kilo. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Average stock is half the quantity received with steady use and no safety stock. The holding cost of 1.5% a month (18% a year) is an example only. Candle counts assume a 200 g container candle at an 8% load (16 g oil). The 15 g median premium of 23.1% over 100 g is across 55 oils listing both sizes.
