I Want a Natural-Looking Soy Candle but Also Need Better Summer Stability — Should I Test a Harder Soy Formulation or a Commercial Wax Blend?
शेयर करना
Is Soy Butter Wax 100% soy? No — CSI's product page describes it as soy pellets, soy chunks and beeswax. It is not 100% soy and not beeswax-free.
Can I use Soy Pillar Wax in jars? As a share of your own formula, yes, to test — it is sold as a pillar wax. Check adhesion and wick, and confirm composition before any "100% soy" claim.
What does the test cost? ₹9,618.40 for 25 candles across five formulations. See the kit.
Test both — but decide your label first, because it removes options before heat does
The two routes in your question are both worth testing, and they are less different than their names suggest. A "harder soy formulation" usually means adding something firmer to your soy — another soy wax made for pillars, beeswax, or (if your label allows it) microcrystalline wax. A "commercial wax blend" is the same idea done by a wax maker: a ready-made mix such as a soy–beeswax blend or a coconut–soy blend. Both aim at a candle that holds its surface and its oil better in summer; neither is guaranteed to, and CSI publishes no heat, hardness or stability data for any of them.
What separates them in practice is what they do to your label and your look. Soy Butter Wax's product page describes it as a blend of soy pellets, soy chunks and beeswax — so it is not 100% soy and not beeswax-free. Adding beeswax yourself has the same effect. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is a coconut–soy blend, so it is not "100% soy" either, though CSI's product page does state a melting point of 50–53°C and a fragrance ceiling of up to 13%. Soy Pillar Wax is sold for pillars and designer candles, not as a container wax; using part of it in a jar is your own formula, and its page publishes no melting point, ceiling or composition — so confirm with CSI before calling the result "100% soy". Microcrystalline wax is petroleum-derived, which rules it out for a "natural" brief.
So the order is: write down which claims your candle must carry, strike out the formulations that break them, and heat-test the rest side by side against your current wax — under the same arms, at the same load, judged on stability and on looking natural. The formulation that holds up in your logged route arm and still looks like your candle wins. The ratios here (20% pillar wax, 10% beeswax) are examples of a maker's own formula, not CSI recommendations, and no fragrance ceiling is published for any blend.
The five formulations, and what each one changes
All five are poured as a 200 g candle at 8% Gilli Mitti (16 g of oil + 184 g of wax). In the two maker's blends the wax is split by weight: F1 is 147.2 g Chunks + 36.8 g Soy Pillar; F2 is 165.6 g Chunks + 18.4 g beeswax. Mechanisms are general candle-making knowledge, phrased as "can"; costs are at production packs.
| Formulation | Why makers try it | What it can also change | Label consequence | Wax per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F0 · Chunks (current) | Your approved natural look | — | As now | ₹110.22 |
| F1 · Chunks 80 + Soy Pillar 20 (example) | Pillar waxes are formulated to stand free; a share may firm a container candle | Glass adhesion, wick match, top texture | Confirm composition before "100% soy" | ₹110.25 |
| F2 · Chunks 90 + Beeswax 10 (example) | Beeswax is commonly used to firm softer waxes | Colour (warmer tone), scent, wick match | Not 100% soy; not vegan | ₹113.91 |
| F3 · Soy Butter Wax | A ready-made soy–beeswax blend | Look, wick match, throw | Contains beeswax (per its page): not 100% soy, not vegan | ₹201.92 |
| F4 · CSI 468 | A ready-made coconut–soy blend with a published melting point (50–53°C) and 13% ceiling | Look, wick match, throw | Coconut–soy: not "100% soy" | ₹117.21 |
| (not tested) Chunks + 5% microcrystalline | Commonly used for firmness and flexibility | Look, adhesion | Petroleum-derived: rules out "natural" | ₹107.46 |
Two notes on the table. Soy Butter Wax is the dearest container option per candle in CSI's range at its 1 kg price, so it has to earn its place on stability or look. And Premium Coconut Soy Wax (soy and virgin coconut oil per its page, ₹920.00 a kilo) is another commercial blend you could add as a sixth arm; the reversible-softening post tests it against CSI 468. The softening post covers the simpler case where label claims are not a constraint.
The side-by-side test: stability and look on one sheet
| Arm | Condition | Candles | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| R · Workshop | Packed as shipped, at home | 1 unscented + 1 at 8% | Reference twins and the look panel |
| M · Logged route | Your logged parcel peak and hours (or an example 40–45°C, 6 h closed chamber until you have a log) | 1 unscented + 2 at 8% | Stability: surface, dent, blot, wick, glass; one 8% candle burned |
| Per formulation | 5 | 25 candles for five formulations |
The combined scoring sheet
One row per line, one column per formulation. The pass rules are set before the test. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit; the burn line is no worse than the formulation's R twin, within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard).

The priced formulation kit
CSI's load convention: oil = 200 g × load. Fifteen 8% candles need 240 g of Gilli Mitti, 252.0 g with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption). Wax needs per material, with the same allowance, are in the table.

Cost per candle, and the pilot that follows
At production packs (Chunks, Soy Pillar and Beeswax 5 kg; Soy Butter 1 kg, its largest listed size; CSI 468 10 kg; Gilli Mitti 1 kg at ₹143.36 per candle; ₹5.90 wick; ₹70.80 jar; labour, packaging, freight and GST excluded):
| Formulation | Wax | Candle | vs F0 | 50-candle pilot wax (CSI packs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F0 · Chunks (current) | ₹110.22 | ₹330.28 | — | Chunks 2 × 5 kg = ₹5,990.00 |
| F1 · Chunks 80 + Soy Pillar 20 | ₹110.25 | ₹330.31 | +₹0.04 | Chunks 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg + Soy Pillar 2 × 1 kg = ₹5,992.00 |
| F2 · Chunks 90 + Beeswax 10 | ₹113.91 | ₹333.97 | +₹3.70 | Chunks 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg + Beeswax 1 × 1 kg = ₹6,191.00 |
| F3 · Soy Butter Wax | ₹201.92 | ₹421.98 | +₹91.71 | Soy Butter 10 × 1 kg = ₹10,974.00 |
| F4 · CSI 468 | ₹117.21 | ₹337.27 | +₹6.99 | CSI 468 1 × 10 kg = ₹6,370.00 |
The oil dominates this candle — ₹143.36 of Gilli Mitti against ₹110.22 of Chunks — so the formulation choice moves the candle's cost by at most ₹91.71 (Soy Butter). The maker's blends F1 and F2 add ₹0.04 and ₹3.70; CSI 468 adds ₹6.99. On a premium natural candle, stability and look are worth far more than those differences — but only if the test shows a real improvement over F0.
The decision rule
| Result | Decision | Purchase |
|---|---|---|
| F0 matches the best formulation in M | Neither — keep current wax | No new wax; load ladder or packing changes |
| F1 improves on F0, keeps claims and look, burns no worse | Harder soy formulation | F1 pilot: Chunks 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg + Soy Pillar 2 × 1 kg = ₹5,992.00 |
| F2 or F3 improves and your label already allows beeswax | Beeswax route — maker's blend or commercial blend; prefer the cheaper that passes | F2 pilot ₹6,191.00 · F3 pilot ₹10,974.00 |
| F4 improves and "100% soy" is not on your label | Commercial coconut–soy blend | F4 pilot: CSI 468 1 × 10 kg = ₹6,370.00 |
| A formulation improves stability but burns worse | Not yet | Separate wick test for that formulation, then repeat M |
| Nothing improves on F0 | Formulation is not the lever | Re-check test temperatures; seasonal plan |
After the pilot, ship the first production run with a logger in one parcel. The hub covers the bulk order and the full heat qualification, improving heat resistance without losing the creamy look goes deeper into appearance trade-offs, and whether summer performance should decide your wax helps if most of your candles are used indoors anyway.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Every option on this page except your current wax sells you a second or dearer wax, and Soy Butter Wax is our most expensive container option. We publish no stability, hardness or melt data for Soy Butter, Soy Pillar or Chunks, so this page ranks nothing — it gives you the filter and the test.
Every wax price is CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; Gilli Mitti prices are from the 24 September 2026 pull; wick, jar and tissue prices are as verified on 10 September and 24–25 September 2026. Blend grams, candle splits, per-candle costs, pilot quantities and pack rounding are arithmetic, shown to two decimals. Product-page statements — Soy Butter's beeswax content, CSI 468's melting point and ceiling — are attributed to CSI's product pages.
The 20% pillar-wax and 10% beeswax shares, the 5% microcrystalline example, the 8% load, arms, candle counts, look panel, the 50-candle pilot and the 5% pour loss are labelled working practices and examples of a maker's own formula. No fragrance ceiling is published for any blend. For composition questions, a test kit, bulk quote, GST invoicing or MSDS, WhatsApp +91 7397976926.
