Quick answers — read this first
How can ₹20,000 look like a big collection? Eight scents in two sizes = 16 products, from one wax and two containers. Colour by family adds visual range without adding SKUs.

What does it cost? ₹17,822.50 in CSI materials for 56 saleable candles and 24 test candles, leaving ₹2,177.50 in reserve.

Why the 85 g tin? It is CSI's one container with a published fill (85 g) at ₹30.00 a tin — the cheapest way to double the product count with a lower price point.

What should I avoid? A third jar style or a second wax. Neither adds a choice the customer sees; both add a full wick ladder and part-used packs.
The short answer
Answer: Create variety through scent, size and colour, not through materials. Eight scents in a 200 g jar and an 85 g tin give 16 products from one wax.
Numbers: 24 jars + 32 tins, 24 test candles, CSI spend ₹17,822.50, reserve ₹2,177.50 — total ₹20,000.00.
Method: Price each variety lever → keep scent, size and colour → weigh the jar fill → two wick ladders → colour by family → buy production wicks after the ladders.
16 shelf facings from one wax, two containers, one wick range and two dyes 8 scents × 2 sizes · colour marks the family, not a new SKU · fills: tin 85 g published, jar 200 g illustrative Peach Melon Berry Fallen Leaves Honeydew Melon Apple Cinnamon Blue Ocean Eucalyptus Spearmint Royal Apricot Pomegranate Splash 200 g 85 g Tint shows the family: light = fresh, mid = fruity, dark = autumn / spice (one red and one blue dye, doses from your own trial). Materials behind the wall: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · White Matte jar · Golden Aluminium Tin · Eco Thin C1 / Thick C2 · 8 oils. CSI spend ₹17,822.50 for 56 saleable candles · ₹2,177.50 of ₹20,000.00 held in reserve.
The shelf wall a ₹20,000 budget can build: eight scents in two sizes, tinted by family. The tin's 85 g fill is published by CSI; the jar's 200 g is an illustrative planning fill to replace with a weighed test pour. Shades depend on your own dye trial.
Straight answer
I want my first candle collection to look large but only have ₹20,000 for raw materials — how can I create variety without buying too many different materials?
Put the variety into scent, size and colour — the three things a customer counts — and hold everything else to one choice. On ₹20,000.00, eight fragrance oils in two formats, a 200 g White Matte Glass Jar and the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin (CSI's one container with a published fill), give 16 products from a single wax, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, one Eco wick range and two 15 g dyes used by scent family. That is 56 saleable candles plus 24 test candles for ₹17,822.50 at CSI, with ₹2,177.50 kept for wick fixes and the first reorders — exactly ₹20,000.00. A third jar style or a second wax would add a full wick ladder and part-used packs but not a single choice the customer can see.
One line: the shelf is wide because the store room is narrow.
The ₹20,000.00 collection on this page puts 16 products on the shelf — eight scents, each in a 200 g White Matte jar and an 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin — from one wax, two containers, two wick types and two dyes. 56 saleable candles for ₹17,822.50 at CSI, with ₹2,177.50 kept in reserve. The shared wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹2,995.00 for 5 kg.

Five ways to add variety, priced

A collection looks large because of what the customer can choose between — not because of how many materials you bought.

A customer standing in front of a stall or scrolling a product grid counts choices: scents, sizes, colours. They never count waxes, and they rarely notice a second jar style unless it changes the price. So the cheapest way to look large on ₹20,000.00 is to add the kinds of variety the customer counts and avoid the kinds they do not. The table prices each lever using the figures from this page's own plan (Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, jars at ₹70.80, tins at ₹30.00, the plan's average oil line).

Marginal cost of each lever · computed from this page's plan · wax at ₹599.00 / kg · oils at their 100 g rate · tests and fills as labelled
What each kind of variety costs to add
Lever What the customer sees What you have to buy and test Approx. CSI cost to add Verdict
Another scent +1 scent, +2 products (jar and tin) One oil line, wax, 3 jars, 4 tins, 1 confirmation candle ₹1,558.29 Best value
A second size (85 g tin) +8 products at a lower price point Tins, wax and oil for them, one tin wick ladder ₹4,610.47 Worth it — published 85 g fill
A family colour Groups scents visually; shelf looks curated One 15 g liquid dye + colour-trial tins ₹389.68 per colour Cheap, but a burn check is needed
A third container style Another shape, usually the same price point A jar pack, a weighed fill, a full wick ladder, new lids/labels ₹2,098.44 (e.g. 50 Salsa jars + ladder) Avoid at launch
A second wax Nothing visible A wax bag, pour notes, a ladder in every container a new bag + 12 ladder candles Avoid

Two levers stand out. Scent is the cheapest per product added: one oil line and one confirmation candle, because the jar, tin, wax and wick are already approved. A second size is the best way to double the product count, and the Golden Aluminium Tin is the natural choice because it is the one CSI container with a published fill (85 g) — no guesswork on the BOM — at ₹30.00 a tin. Colour is the third lever: two 15 g liquid dyes give the shelf a family logic without adding a single SKU.

The CSI principle
Spend on the variety a customer can count. Standardise everything they cannot.
Scents, sizes and colours are visible choices. Waxes, wick types and a third jar shape are not — they only add tests, packs and part-used stock.

The 16-product plan in numbers

The plan: eight scents, each made as 3 × 200 g jars and 4 × 85 g tins. That is 24 jars and 32 tins to sell — 56 candles across 16 products. More tins than jars is deliberate: the tin is the low-price entry point and the one most people buy to try a scent, so it carries the breadth while the jar carries the margin per sale. The split is a labelled planning choice, not demand data — CSI publishes none.

Treating the tin like a small jar on the same wick. An 85 g tin is shallower and narrower than a 200 g jar, so the jar's winning wick is not automatically right for it. Fix: give the tin its own six-candle ladder from the same Thin C1 / Thick C2 range. It costs 6 tins of material, and it is the only extra testing the second size needs. The 50 g / 200 g / 500 g plan shows the same idea across three sizes.

The priced list — exactly ₹20,000.00

Sixteen products, one order, and every rupee accounted for.

Every line is rounded to CSI's in-stock packs. One wax note: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹598.00 a kilo in 500 g bags and ₹599.00 in 1 kg and 5 kg bags, so the strictly cheapest cover would be 23 × 500 g at ₹6,877.00. The list uses 2 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g at ₹6,888.00 — ₹11.00 more for far fewer bags to open. Either is fine; there is no bulk discount on this wax.

Pomegranate Splash Fruity 99.8 g 1 × 100 g 0.2 g ₹399.00

The eight oils were chosen for spread across three families and for modest per-gram prices, so that breadth does not eat the budget. None is chosen for throw — CSI publishes no throw data — and none because it is claimed to sell. Seven of the eight need just under 99.8 g each, so a 100 g bottle (or two 50 g where that is cheaper) covers them almost exactly — the reject and pour-loss allowances are already inside that figure, so a near-zero leftover is not a shortfall. The family grouping is a merchandising choice you can change. Eucalyptus Spearmint has the cheapest 15 g in the whole collection (₹68.44), and Honeydew Melon is one of the oils with a real bulk step at 500 g — a reorder note, not a launch buy.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could sell you a third and fourth jar style and a second wax for this budget, and the order would be bigger. It would not make the collection look larger — it would make it smaller, because the money would come out of scents and tins. Keep the wax and the two containers; spend the difference on scents.

Using colour without adding materials

Two liquid dyes, red and blue, are enough to give three families three looks: undyed (or the lightest tint) for fresh scents, a red-based tint for fruity scents, and a deeper red or a red-and-blue mix for the autumn and spice scents. Dye doses are not published for CSI's dyes, so the four colour-trial tins on the list exist to find yours: weigh the dye into a weighed amount of wax, note the shade, and keep the recipe. Dyes can affect the burn, so each colour also gets a burn check with the approved wick.

Colour plan · shades depend on your own trial doses · CSI publishes no dye coverage per kg

Fruity Peach Melon Berry, Honeydew Melon, Royal Apricot, Pomegranate Splash Light red tint Red liquid, 15 g
Autumn / spice Fallen Leaves, Apple Cinnamon Deeper red, or red with a touch of blue — trial it Red + blue
Colour by family, not by product
Eight colours for eight scents means eight dye recipes and eight colour checks. Three family colours means three recipes and a shelf that reads as organised. Yellow and green liquid dyes are out of stock on CSI's pull; yellow dye chips are in stock at ₹250.00 if you want a warm family colour — trial it the same way.

How few materials sit behind sixteen products

Count what you actually stock: one wax, two containers, two wick types (one or two kept after the ladders), eight oils, two dyes and a sheet of wick stickers — 16 materials, of which eight are the scents the customer chose. Everything a customer does not choose has been held to the minimum. The complexity post counts how much testing this saves against a launch built from a wishlist, and the standardise-or-diversify post runs the same logic on a smaller budget.

Sixteen products, one wax. The shelf is wide because the store room is narrow.

When the reserve is spent on reorders rather than new materials, the collection grows the right way: deeper in the scents that sold. Larger packs or cash for reorders and how many fragrances ₹30,000 can support pick up the story at the next budget step.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A bigger materials list would be a bigger order for us. This page recommends the smallest set of materials that can put sixteen products on a shelf.

Frequently asked questions

How many candle scents should I launch with on a small budget?
Enough to look like a range and still sell through. This plan uses eight at 3 jars and 4 tins each; fewer, deeper scents suit a market stall with repeat buyers.
What is the cheapest way to offer two candle sizes?
Use the same wax and wick range in a second container with a known fill. CSI's Golden Aluminium Tin has a published 85 g fill at ₹30.00 a tin.
How much candle dye do I need?
CSI publishes no dose per kilo of wax for its dyes. Buy 15 g, run a small weighed colour trial, write the recipe down and burn-check it.
Do coloured candles need different wicks?
Dyes can affect the burn, so confirm each colour with one candle on the approved wick. It rarely changes the wick, but the check is cheap.
Can I make a candle gift set without buying new materials?
Yes — a box of four 85 g tins in different scents is a new product built entirely from stock. The box itself is a non-CSI packaging cost.
Is it worth buying a 10 kg bag of soy wax for a first collection?
Only for storage convenience. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.90 a kilo in the 10 kg bag against ₹599.00 in 5 kg bags. When to move to bulk covers every material.
One wax, sixteen products
Make the shelf wide and the store room narrow.
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from ₹299.00, Golden tins at ₹360.00 for 12, White Matte jars at ₹70.80, liquid dyes from ₹236.00 and more than eighty oils. Send us your scents and sizes and we will price the collection.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is a share of finished weight (oil = W × L; 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; 85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax). CSI does not publish fill weights for its glass jars (only the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin and the 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar have published fills); the 200 g jar fill is illustrative. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. Reject 5%, pour loss 4%, breakage 2% (glass only), ladder and colour-trial sizes, the jar/tin split and packaging figures are labelled examples. CSI publishes no dye doses, throw, demand or wick-sizing data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
