Budget Shopping Lists · Inventory Complexity
Every wax, jar and wick type you add multiplies the combinations you must test — it does not add to them. Fix the three materials the customer cannot see, keep the fragrances they can smell, and the launch becomes small enough to test completely.
144 → 8
possible wax × jar × wick × oil combinations for the same four scents · 36 → 10 test candles · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much complexity does it remove? In this 100-candle example: combinations 144 → 8, test candles 36 → 10, materials 15 → 9, SKUs 12 → 4.

Does it save money? Yes: ₹9,654.58 less CSI spend and ₹1,415.89 less in part-used packs after launch, at identical allowances.

Which wax and jar? The example uses Natural Soy Pearl and the capped 200 ml Salsa jar. Any one container wax and one jar works; CSI publishes no data that makes one better — test yours.

How small is a small wick range? Two types for one ladder (here Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided). Add a third only if neither passes.
The short answer
Answer: Most of it. Fixing wax, jar and wick type takes a 100-candle, four-oil launch from 144 possible combinations to 8 and from 36 test candles to 10.
Why: Choices multiply. Waxes and containers are the heavy factors: each needs its own pour notes, weighed fill, wick ladder and SKUs. Oils are light: one confirmation candle each.
Method: Fix wax, jar, fill and load → one two-type wick ladder → one confirmation per oil → production wicks after the ladder → write the standard down.
Why a first launch gets complicated: choices multiply, they do not add Same four oils, same 100 saleable candles · only the wax, jar and wick choices change UNPLANNED WISHLIST 3 waxes × 3 containers × 4 wick types × 4 oils = 144 combinations possible to make and test STANDARDISED LAUNCH 1 wax × 1 container × 2 wick types × 4 oils = 8 combinations possible to make and test What that means on the bench: 36 test candles against 10; 15 materials against 9; 12 SKUs against 4; about ₹1,609.82 of part-used packs left on the shelf against ₹193.93. Fragrance is the only factor kept at four in both rows, because it is the one the customer actually chooses.
Wax, container and wick choices multiply the combinations a launch can contain. Holding the four oils constant, the wishlist allows 144 combinations and the standardised launch 8. The fills behind the cost figures are illustrative planning numbers except where CSI publishes them.
Straight answer
If I standardise one wax, one jar and a small wick range, how much inventory complexity can I eliminate from my first candle launch?
Most of it — and it can be counted. Take a 100-candle launch in four oils. Built from a wishlist of three waxes, three containers and four wick types, the oils can be made 144 different ways; testing each wax-and-jar pair across the wick types takes 36 test candles, 15 materials and 12 SKUs, costs ₹29,532.04 at CSI and leaves ₹1,609.82 of part-used packs. Standardised on Natural Soy Pearl, the capped 200 ml Salsa jar and a two-type wick ladder, the same launch has 8 combinations, 10 test candles, 9 materials and 4 SKUs, costs ₹19,877.46 and leaves ₹193.93. The customer sees the same four scents either way. Fix the wax, jar and wick; keep the variety in fragrance.
One line: fix what the customer cannot see; vary what they can smell.
The standardised launch on this page — Natural Soy Pearl, one 200 ml Salsa jar with its golden lug cap, a two-type wick ladder and four oils — makes 100 saleable candles with 10 test candles for ₹19,877.46 in CSI materials. The unplanned wishlist version of the same 100 candles needs 36 test candles and ₹29,532.04. Start with the wax: Natural Soy Pearl Wax, the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk break (₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg).

The complexity scorecard

Complexity is not the number of things you buy. It is the number of things you have to get right.

"How much complexity can I eliminate?" deserves a number, not a feeling. This page counts it. Two makers launch the same 100 candles in the same four oils — Citrus Lemon, Mango Coconut, Cinnamon Vanilla, Gardenia. The first builds the launch from a wishlist: three waxes, three containers, four wick types, each wax paired with one container. The second standardises: Soy Pearl, the 200 ml Salsa jar (sold with a golden lug cap), and a small wick range of Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided, tested side by side. Everything else — load, allowances, oils, candle count — is identical.

CSI spend ₹29,532.04 ₹19,877.46 ₹9,654.58

The headline is the first row. With three waxes, three containers and four wick types, the four oils can be made 144 different ways; a careful maker cannot test them all, so in practice they test a slice and hope. Standardising cuts the space to 8 — two wick candidates for each of four oils — which is small enough to test completely. That is what "eliminating complexity" really buys: not fewer purchases, but a launch where every candle you sell is a combination you have actually burned.

The money rows follow from the test rows. The wishlist launch pours 36 test candles because each of its three wax-and-jar pairs needs its own ladder across four wick types (three candles each, a labelled working practice). The standardised launch pours 10: one six-candle ladder and one confirmation candle per oil. At the same allowances, the difference shows up as ₹9,654.58 more CSI spend and ₹1,415.89 more in part-used packs sitting on the shelf after the launch.

The CSI principle
Choices multiply. Every factor you fix divides the work.
Three waxes × three jars × four wicks × four oils = 144. One × one × two × four = 8. The oils stayed at four in both — the customer never asked for more waxes.

Where the complexity actually lives

Each material brings its own kind of work. Counting them separately shows which simplifications matter most, and which are cosmetic.

Qualitative — what each extra variant forces you to do · CSI publishes no fills (except the 85 g tin and 50 g velvet jar), wick charts or throw data
The work each extra variant creates
Extra variant Work it creates Why it cannot be skipped Weight
A second wax New pour notes, new cure checks, new ladder in every jar Each CSI wax page states different handling (e.g. CSI 468 pour 58–60°C; Soy Pearl publishes none) Heavy
A second container Weighed test pour, new ladder, new lid/label/box, new SKUs Jar fills and wick sizes per diameter are not published Heavy
A third or fourth wick type Wider ladders in every pair Wicks are not interchangeable by size — test Medium
Another oil One confirmation candle with the approved wick Oils can change the burn; one check is enough to catch a failure Light
A dye colour A colour trial and a burn check Dye doses are not published; dyes can affect the burn Medium

The heavy rows are waxes and containers. They are also the ones a first launch tends to multiply, because they are visible on a product page and easy to add to a cart. Fixing those two removes most of the bench work; the wick range then shrinks naturally, because one jar and one wax only need one ladder. Oils are the light row — which is exactly why the standardise-or-diversify post recommends putting the launch's variety there.

A cap is a material too
The Salsa jar used here is sold with a golden lug cap, and the Yankee 130 ml with a clear cap. The White Matte jar is not listed with a lid, so it needs one sourced elsewhere. In the wishlist launch that is one more supplier, one more size to match and one more reorder point. Choosing a capped jar as the standard removes the lid problem altogether.

The standardised BOM and allowance stack

The standardised candle is a 200 ml Salsa jar filled to 160 g, which is an illustrative planning fill — not published, weigh a test pour: CSI does not publish fill weights for its glass jars (only the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin and the 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar have published fills), and "200 ml" is the jar's brim volume, not a wax weight. At 8% that is 12.8 g of oil and 147.2 g of wax. Natural Soy Pearl has no fragrance ceiling published on its product page, so 8% is a working load to confirm with your ladder; check the page or ask on WhatsApp for the maker's stated maximum.

Allowance stack · applied in order · rates are labelled working assumptions
From 100 saleable candles to quantities
Step Rule Applied to Result
1 · Tests 6 ladder candles (3 Thick C2 + 3 Cotton) + 4 confirmation candles everything 110 candles
2 · Rejects ÷ (1 − 5%) — example wax, oil, wicks 115.79 candles' worth
3 · Pour loss × (1 + 4%) wax and oil only wax 17,726 g · oil 1,541.4 g
4 · Breakage × (1 + 2%) — example glass only 113 jars
5 · Round up cheapest in-stock packs each material the priced list
Adding complexity to save a few rupees. A maker sees that Chunks' 500 g bag is cheaper per kilo than its 1 kg, that CSI 464's 1 kg is cheaper than its 500 g, and that Soy Pearl gets cheaper from 5 kg — and buys all three waxes "to compare". Each comparison is legitimate, but each one is a full ladder in every jar. Fix: choose one wax on paper for the launch (published ceiling, handling you can follow, the pack size you will use) and compare waxes later, deliberately, with the bulk-timing post's pack arithmetic in hand.

The priced standardised list, with leftovers

Every material is rounded to its cheapest in-stock combination. Soy Pearl's 17,726 g need comes out as 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg: the 5 kg and 10 kg bags are ₹424.80 a kilo against ₹450.00 at 1 kg, so most of the wax sits in the large bags and the 1 kg bags only top it up. The Salsa jar is ₹29.50 each in packs of 50 and 100, against ₹40.12 each in packs of 5 — a real per-unit break, so the jars are bought mostly as a 100-pack.

The leftovers are small and useful: a little wax, a few spare jars and part-bottles of four oils you will pour again. Compare that with the wishlist launch below, where the leftover value is ₹1,609.82 spread across three waxes, three containers and four oils, and some of it only fits a format you may drop. Picking packs for the minimum leftover shows how to tighten rounding further once your fill and loss are measured.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The wishlist launch is the bigger order for CSI — ₹9,654.58 bigger on this page — and it would be easy to call it "giving customers choice". It is not. Three waxes and three jars give the customer exactly the same four scents. Buy the smaller order, test it completely, and spend the difference on the reorder of whichever oil sells.

What to buy now and what to buy after testing

Standardising also makes the buy-now / buy-later split simple, because almost everything is shared.

6
Write the standard downWax, jar, fill weight, load, wick, cure checkpoint, pour notes — one page. Every future oil is tested against this page, not from scratch.

What not to standardise

Standardise the parts the customer cannot see. Vary the part they can smell.

Fragrance is the obvious exception, and the four oils here are kept separate on purpose — they are the launch's variety. Two other things should stay flexible. The first is the wick range itself: two candidates for the ladder is a minimum, not a target, and if neither passes you add a third rather than forcing a winner. The second is the test count: the confirmation candle per oil is cheap insurance, and dropping it to save one candle's worth of wax and oil is false economy.

What should be standardised beyond wax, jar and wick? The fill weight (one number, written down), the load (one percentage, written as a share of the finished candle), the pour and cure routine, and the label template. Each of those removes a decision from every future batch. The 10-SKU standardisation post adds dyes to that list, and one combined BOM or one per variation shows how to write the standard as a BOM.

A launch with four scents you have fully tested beats a launch with forty-eight combinations you have half tested.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The wishlist launch on this page is the larger CSI order, and we still recommend the smaller one, because a launch you can test completely is the one that leads to reorders.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026; wick, sticker and jar packs are from the CSI listing re-checked 4 October 2026. Combination counts, allowance stacks, pack rounding, leftover values and totals are computed and shown so you can check them.

The 160 g Salsa fill and the 200 g and 100 g fills in the wishlist, the 8% load, the 5% reject, 4% pour-loss and 2% breakage rates, the three-candles-per-wick ladder and the 25-minute bench time per test candle are labelled examples and working assumptions. Frequently asked questions

How many raw materials do I need to start a candle business?
For one standardised range: one wax, one jar, two wick types for testing (one kept), your oils and wick stickers. In this example that is 9 materials with four oils.
How many test candles should I make before launching?
Enough to test every combination you will sell. Standardised, that is a six-candle wick ladder plus one per oil — 10 here. Each extra wax or jar adds a full ladder.
Should I buy different waxes to compare before launching?
Not for the launch. Choose one on paper, launch, then compare deliberately with a control candle. Each extra wax is a full ladder in every jar.
Which candle jar comes with a lid at CSI?
The 200 ml Salsa jar (golden lug cap) and the Yankee 130 ml jar (clear cap) are sold with caps. The White Matte jar is not listed with a lid.
Does standardising reduce dead stock?
Yes. In this example the part-used packs left after launch fall from ₹1,609.82 to ₹193.93, and what remains is wax, jars and oils you will use again.
Can I add more jars later?
Yes — once a scent has sold, add a format deliberately, with its own weighed fill and wick ladder. When a second container is worth it sets out the signals.
Fix three, vary one
One wax, one jar, two wicks to test — and as many scents as you can sell.
Natural Soy Pearl from ₹450.00 a kilo (₹424.80 from 5 kg), Salsa jars with caps at ₹29.50 in packs of 50, Eco Thick C2 from ₹94.40 for 10 and more than eighty oils. Send us your launch plan and we will help you cut it down.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is a share of finished weight (oil = W × L; 160 g at 8% = 12.8 g oil + 147.2 g wax). CSI does not publish fill weights for its glass jars (only the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin and the 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar have published fills); the 160 g, 200 g and 100 g fills are illustrative. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. Reject 5%, pour loss 4%, breakage 2%, three candles per wick option, cure checkpoints and the 25-minute bench time are labelled examples. Leftover value = unused units × average price paid for that material. CSI publishes no throw, demand or wick-sizing data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
