I Want Strongly Scented Pillar Candles but Increasing Fragrance Makes Them Softer — Should I Reduce Fragrance or Change the Wax?
शेयर करना
Does microcrystalline wax harden soy pillars? Makers use it for that. CSI's Microcrystalline Wax Slab states a 1–10% blend. Any blend with Soy Pillar Wax is your own formula and must be tested.
How much Vybar should I test? CSI's Vybar page states 0.5–2%. A 1% test in a 250 g pillar is 2.5 g.
Is paraffin firmer than soy pillar wax? CSI publishes no hardness for either, so compare them in your own mould. Paraffin pellets are also cheaper per gram than Soy Pillar Wax.
Diagnose the softness before choosing a fix
Before deciding between less oil and a different wax, work out what kind of soft you are dealing with. A pillar that dents under a fingertip all over is a different problem from one that is firm inside but greasy on the surface, and both differ from one that leans after a day on a warm shelf. Each points to a different lever.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Greasy surface, oil ring on paper | Load above what the wax holds | One load step lower |
| Soft all through, dents easily | Base wax too soft for the format | Harder blend or paraffin |
| Firm in the morning, soft by afternoon | Room or storage heat | Re-test in a cooler spot |
| Soft only near the base | Pillar demoulded before fully set | Longer set time (your measured figure) |
| Soft and scent is weak | Oil not suited to this wax | Different oil at the same load |
If the symptom is a greasy surface with an oily ring, the load is too high for the wax and the cheapest fix is less oil. If the pillar is soft all the way through even at a modest load, the wax is the issue and less oil will only weaken the scent without solving the shape. Start with the first row and work down.
Route one: reduce the load and keep the scent
Lowering the load is free, which is why it comes first. It is also the most honest test of cause. Pour your pillar one step lower, for example from 8% to 6% of total weight, and change nothing else. If the 6% pillar is firm and the surface is dry, you have your answer.
The worry is always that 6% will smell weak. Three things recover strength without adding oil. First, cure longer: the product pages state 48 to 72 hours for soy as a minimum, and many makers smell again at one and two weeks. Second, judge hot throw in a room-sized space, not a small cupboard where every pillar smells strong. Third, choose an oil that performs well per gram. A reviewer described Woody Oud as "Good quality wood fragrance oil with a warm, long-lasting scent and strong performance in candles." That is one customer's view, not a measurement, but it is why we use it in the example below.
Routes two to four: harden or change the base
If the lower load is too weak and the higher load too soft, the wax is the constraint. CSI sells no ready-made hard wax blend, so each of these routes is your own formulation built from CSI materials and checked in your mould.
Soy Pillar Wax plus microcrystalline wax
CSI's Microcrystalline Wax Slab states a 1–10% blend. A 3% addition is a reasonable first step, chosen as a starting point. In a 250 g pillar that is 7.5 g of microcrystalline, melted in with the Pillar Wax before the oil goes in.
Soy Pillar Wax plus Vybar
CSI's Vybar page states 0.5–2%. Try 1% first, which is 2.5 g in a 250 g pillar. Vybar is used in small amounts, so weigh it carefully; the 50 g pack at ₹156.00 covers twenty such pillars.
Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets
Paraffin pellets are sold for pillars and containers, with no fragrance load published. Woody Oud's page states paraffin 6–8%, so 8% sits at the top of that stated range. Moving from soy to paraffin also changes how the pillar looks and burns, so treat it as a new product test rather than a small adjustment.
What a harder base does to the burn
A firmer pillar is not free of side effects. A harder wax generally needs more heat to melt, so a wick that was right for plain Pillar Wax may leave a narrower pool or a shell of unmelted wax in a hardened version. That is why the test plan below includes a burn, not just a fingertip check. A pillar that passes the shelf test but tunnels on the first evening has only moved the problem from the shelf to the customer's table.
Summer is the other consideration. A pillar that is firm in a cool February workshop may slump in a hot May parcel or a sunny shop window. No CSI wax has a published temperature it will survive, so if you sell through the hot months, judge every route on a warm afternoon as well as in the morning, and choose the one with the most margin rather than the one that only just passes.
The four routes costed for a 250 g Woody Oud pillar
Here the reader weighs their pillar mould and finds it takes 250 g. That is their own figure. If the mould is CSI's short Pillar Candle Mould (8.6 × 6.5 cm, ₹942.82), weigh your own fill rather than estimating from the dimensions. Woody Oud is costed at its 1 kg price of ₹4,531.20, or ₹4.5312 per gram. Microcrystalline wax is costed at ₹299.00 per kg, Vybar at ₹312.00 per 100 g and paraffin at ₹354.00 per kg.
| Route | Recipe | Working | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Lower load | 235 g Pillar Wax + 15 g oil (6%) | ₹141.00 + ₹67.97 | ₹208.97 |
| 2. Micro blend | 222.5 g Pillar Wax + 7.5 g micro + 20 g oil (8%) | ₹133.50 + ₹2.24 + ₹90.62 | ₹226.36 |
| 3. Vybar blend | 227.5 g Pillar Wax + 2.5 g Vybar + 20 g oil (8%) | ₹136.50 + ₹7.80 + ₹90.62 | ₹234.92 |
| 4. Paraffin | 230 g paraffin pellets + 20 g oil (8%) | ₹81.42 + ₹90.62 | ₹172.04 |
The working for route two is 222.5 × ₹0.60 = ₹133.50 for Pillar Wax, 7.5 × ₹0.299 = ₹2.24 for microcrystalline and 20 × ₹4.5312 = ₹90.62 for oil. Route four uses 230 × ₹0.354 = ₹81.42 for paraffin. None of these include the wick, packaging, labels, labour, shipping or GST.
Two things stand out. The harder soy routes cost only ₹17.39 and ₹25.95 more than route one, almost all of it the extra 5 g of oil, so price should not stop you hardening a pillar if your test says it works. And paraffin is the cheapest route by a margin, but it gives you a paraffin pillar, which some customers specifically do not want. Decide what your product promises before you choose on cost.
The side-by-side test and the shopping split
To test, buy Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg at ₹600.00, microcrystalline 500 g at ₹149.00, Vybar 50 g at ₹156.00, paraffin pellets 500 g at ₹177.00 and Woody Oud 100 g at ₹453.12. That is ₹1,535.12 and covers all four pillars, which together use 75 g of oil. Once a route wins, buy only its materials in volume: for route two, Pillar Wax 10 kg at ₹6,000.00, microcrystalline 1 kg at ₹299.00 and Woody Oud 1 kg at ₹4,531.20.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
