I Want to Know Exactly How Much Candle Raw Material to Purchase Every Month Without Constantly Running Out or Overbuying — How Do I Build a Procurement Model Using Sales, Formula Consumption, Lead Time, Wastage and Safety Stock?
शेयर करना
How do I stop running out? Give every material a reorder point: daily use × delivery days + safety stock. In the example, wax reorders at 56.93 kg (7-day delivery, 7 safety days).
How do I stop overbuying? Order only up to an order-up-to level — daily use × (delivery + review days) + safety stock — minus stock on hand and on order. The example holds about 10.5 days of materials on average, against about 22 days when a month is bought at once.
What does the model tell me this week? One line per material: order or hold, and how many packs. This week's example order is ₹45,983.08. See this week's order.
Sheet 1 — the five inputs
The model needs exactly five kinds of input. Each is something you already know or can measure; none is a guess dressed as a formula. This page fills them in for a worked example: a small business selling three candle products in five scents. Replace every example value with your own and the model holds.
| Input | Example value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Products and monthly units | 500 × 200 g · 250 × 85 g · 150 × 50 g | Sales forecast |
| Scent shares | Lavender 30% · British Rose 25% · Dark Vanilla 20% · Mango Coconut 15% · Neroli 10% | Sales history |
| Load | 8% of finished weight | Your tested formula (Chunks rated up to 13%) |
| Wastage | Wax 3% · oil 3% · wicks 2% · glass 1% · tins 0% | Your records (labelled assumption here) |
| Lead time | Wax 7 · oils 10 · wicks 7 · containers 14 days | Your delivery log (example) |
| Safety stock | 7 days of use | Your choice of protection |
| Review period | 7 days (weekly count) | Your routine |
Sheet 2 — monthly consumption
Multiply each product's units by its formula to get net consumption, then apply wastage. The finished weight includes the oil, so wax is the finished weight × (1 − load) — never the full fill weight. I Need to Produce 2,000 × 150 g Candles — How Do I Calculate the Total Wax Requirement Without Accidentally Treating Finished Candle Weight as Pure Wax Weight? covers that trap for a single order.
| Product | Container | Units | Wax per unit | Oil per unit | Wax a month | Oil a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jar 200 g | White Matte Glass Jar (tested 200 g fill) | 500 | 184.0 g | 16.0 g | 92,000 g | 8,000 g |
| Tin 85 g | Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g listed fill) | 250 | 78.2 g | 6.8 g | 19,550 g | 1,700 g |
| Heart 50 g | Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g listed wax capacity) | 150 | 46.0 g | 4.0 g | 6,900 g | 600 g |
| All | 900 | 118,450 g | 10,300 g |
| Material | Net a month | Wastage | Gross monthly need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 118,450 g | 3% | 122,004 g |
| Oil (all scents) | 10,300 g | 3% | 10,609 g |
| Wicks | 900 | 2% | 918.0 |
| White Matte jars | 500 | 1% | 505.0 |
| Golden tins | 250 | 0% | 250 |
| Heart velvet jars | 150 | 1% | 151.5 |
Oil is then split by scent share: Lavender 3,183 g, British Rose 2,652 g, Dark Vanilla 2,122 g, Mango Coconut 1,591 g and Neroli 1,061 g a month. If a scent sells in different proportions across products, split per product instead, as in I Want to Keep 30 Days of Candle Raw-Material Inventory — How Do I Convert Monthly Unit Sales into Kilograms of Wax and Fragrance Stock?. At CSI listed prices the month's materials are worth ₹1,82,913.67, with oils valued at their 1 kg per-gram rates.
Sheet 3 — safety stock, reorder point, order-up-to
Daily use is the gross monthly need ÷ 30. Then: safety stock = daily × 7; reorder point = daily × lead time + safety stock; order-up-to level = daily × (lead time + review period) + safety stock. The review period matters: because you only count weekly, an order must cover the delivery time and the week until you next look.
| Material | Monthly need | Daily use | Lead time (days) | Safety stock | Reorder point | Order-up-to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 122,004 g | 4,066.8 g | 7 | 28,467 g | 56,935 g | 85,402 g |
| Lavender | 3,183 g | 106.1 g | 10 | 743 g | 1,804 g | 2,546 g |
| British Rose | 2,652 g | 88.4 g | 10 | 619 g | 1,503 g | 2,122 g |
| Dark Vanilla | 2,122 g | 70.7 g | 10 | 495 g | 1,202 g | 1,697 g |
| Mango Coconut | 1,591 g | 53.0 g | 10 | 371 g | 902 g | 1,273 g |
| Neroli | 1,061 g | 35.4 g | 10 | 248 g | 601 g | 849 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 918 | 30.6 | 7 | 215 | 429 | 643 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 505 | 16.8 | 14 | 118 | 354 | 472 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g | 250 | 8.3 | 14 | 59 | 175 | 234 |
| Heart Cutout Velvet Jar | 152 | 5.0 | 14 | 36 | 107 | 142 |
Read the wax row: daily use 4.07 kg; safety stock 28.47 kg; reorder when stock position falls to 56.93 kg; order up to 85.40 kg. Convert these into shelf units once — 5 kg bags, 1 kg bottles, packs of wicks and jars — and write them on the shelf labels. I'm Producing 5,000 Candles a Month — How Do I Calculate Monthly Raw-Material Consumption and Set Automatic Reorder Levels for Every Major Component? shows the same levels expressed in packs for a 5,000-candle-a-month operation.
Sheet 4 — this week's order
Once a week, count every material on the shelf and note anything ordered but not yet delivered. The stock position is on hand + on order. Where it is at or below the reorder point, order the gap to the order-up-to level, rounded up to the cheapest practical CSI packs. Here is one Monday in the example business:
| Material | On hand | On order | Position | Reorder point | Decision | Gap to order-up-to | Packs | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 70,000 g | 0 g | 70,000 g | 56,935 g | Hold | — | no order | ₹0.00 |
| Lavender | 1,200 g | 0 g | 1,200 g | 1,804 g | Order | 1,346 g | 1 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g | ₹7,381.00 |
| British Rose | 600 g | 1,000 g | 1,600 g | 1,503 g | Hold | — | no order | ₹0.00 |
| Dark Vanilla | 900 g | 0 g | 900 g | 1,202 g | Order | 797 g | 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g | ₹6,210.00 |
| Mango Coconut | 250 g | 0 g | 250 g | 902 g | Order | 1,023 g | 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 100 g | ₹4,464.00 |
| Neroli | 500 g | 0 g | 500 g | 601 g | Order | 349 g | 4 × 100 g | ₹2,662.08 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 700 | 0 | 700 | 429 | Hold | — | no order | ₹0.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 230 | 0 | 230 | 354 | Order | 242 | 49 × pack of 5 | ₹17,346.00 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g | 84 | 0 | 84 | 175 | Order | 150 | 13 × pack of 12 | ₹4,680.00 |
| Heart Cutout Velvet Jar | 70 | 0 | 70 | 107 | Order | 72 | 7 × pack of 10 + 2 × pack of 1 | ₹3,240.00 |
| This week's order | ₹45,983.08 |
British Rose shows why on-order matters: 600 g on the shelf looks low, but a 1 kg bottle is already on its way, so the position is 1,600 g and the model holds. Without the on-order column, the model would double-order it. Wax, with 70.00 kg on hand, is above its reorder point and waits for next week. The whole week's order is ₹45,983.08.

Running the model
The model is only as good as its upkeep. Three routines keep it honest:
| Column | Meaning | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly need | Forecast × formula × (1 + wastage) | =SUMPRODUCT(units, per_unit) * (1 + waste) |
| Daily | Monthly ÷ 30 | =need / 30 |
| Safety stock | Daily × safety days | =daily * ss_days |
| Reorder point | Daily × lead time + safety | =daily * lead + safety |
| Order-up-to | Daily × (lead + review) + safety | =daily * (lead + review) + safety |
| Position | On hand + on order | =on_hand + on_order |
| Gap | Only when at or below reorder point | =IF(position <= reorder, upto - position, 0) |
| Packs | Round up to pack size | =ROUNDUP(gap / pack, 0) |
A useful self-check: over a normal month, what you buy should roughly equal what you consume — ₹1,82,913.67 in this example. If purchases run well above consumption for two months, stock is building somewhere; find the line and check its inputs. If they run below, you are eating into safety stock and a stock-out is coming. I Have ₹1 Lakh Available for Raw-Material Inventory — How Do I Decide How Much Should Go into Wax, Fragrance Oils, Wicks and Jars Based on Actual Monthly Consumption? allocates a fixed budget when the model asks for more than you have.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A procurement model that works will usually make a maker buy less, more often. We have built it that way on purpose, and said plainly that on our listed prices there is little reason to buy bigger than the gap.
Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; Eco Candle Wick prices from the 25 September 2026 pull; the White Matte Glass Jar price was verified on 10 September 2026 for Blog 760; Golden tin and Heart Cutout Velvet Jar prices from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull. Consumption, levels, positions and order values are plain arithmetic on those figures.
The forecast, scent shares, the 200 g White Matte fill, the wastage percentages, lead times, safety days, review period and the Monday count are labelled examples.
