I Want to Make a ₹999 Luxury Candle That Feels Noticeably Better Than a ₹399 Candle — Which Raw Materials Should I Invest More In?
शेयर करना
Does the material share of retail change? Barely. The ₹399 candle takes 33.7% of its retail in materials and the ₹999 candle takes 32.2%. You are not spending a bigger share at the higher price point; you are spending a bigger amount on components the customer notices.
What is the single biggest lever? Grams. Going from a 120 g candle to a 200 g candle is 70.7 g more wax, and in Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹650/kg that is ₹73.85 — weight the customer feels the moment they pick the candle up.
What should I not spend more on? The wick (₹3.54 buys the step from C1 to C2 and is chosen by burn test, not by budget), the wick sticker (₹2.50 either way), and any additive whose page states no dosage. Spending there buys you nothing a customer can perceive.
The two candles, costed line by line
Neither candle below is hypothetical: every component is in stock and every rupee is a live September 2026 price. The ₹399 candle is deliberately a good cheap candle, not a bad one — a real wax, a real single-note oil with a published load, a real jar. The ₹999 candle is the same idea with more of it. Both are costed with the load stated as a percentage of total wax weight, the convention CSI's own wax pages use.
| Component | The ₹399 candle · 120 g at 8% | ₹ | The ₹999 candle · 200 g at 10% | ₹ | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | Eco Soy CSI 400 ₹399/kg · 111.11 g | ₹44.33 | Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 ₹650/kg · 181.82 g | ₹118.18 | +₹73.85 |
| Fragrance | Roasted Coffee ₹3.90/g · 8.89 g | ₹34.67 | Sandalwood ₹5.03/g · 18.18 g | ₹91.39 | +₹56.72 |
| Container | Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid · 120 gm, 6 cm diameter | ₹47.20 | Black Matte Glass Jar · 200 ml, 8 cm high × 7 cm wide | ₹70.80 | +₹23.60 |
| Wick | Eco Candle Wicks · Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 | Eco Candle Wicks · Thick (C2) | ₹9.44 | +₹3.54 |
| Wick fixing | Candle Wick Sticker | ₹2.50 | Same sticker | ₹2.50 | ₹0 |
| Outer box | None | ₹0 | Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging 11 × 11 × 8 cm | ₹22.42 | +₹22.42 |
| Wrap | None | ₹0 | Premium Packing Tissue Paper · 1 sheet of 100 | ₹6.50 | +₹6.50 |
| Care label | None | ₹0 | Candle Care Sticker · 1 inch | ₹0.83 | +₹0.83 |
| Materials per candle | ₹134.60 | ₹322.06 | +₹187.46 | ||
| Paise in each rupee of retail | ₹134.60 ÷ ₹399 | 33.7 | ₹322.06 ÷ ₹999 | 32.2 | −1.5 |
Where the extra ₹187.46 goes
The table above is a cost breakdown. This one is a decision tool: it ranks the same five upgrades by size, and then asks the only question that matters at a premium price point — can the customer detect it without being told? A component the customer cannot detect is not an upgrade; it is a cost.
| # | Upgrade | Extra cost | Share of the gap | Can the customer detect it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fill weight: 120 g → 200 g (70.71 g more wax, and a dearer wax) | +₹73.85 | 39.4% | Yes — by weight in the hand, immediately, before anything is opened |
| 2 | Fragrance: a dearer oil per gram, and 8% → 10% of total wax weight | +₹56.72 | 30.3% | Yes — on opening and again when lit; the part they describe to other people |
| 3 | Presentation: outer box, tissue wrap, printed care label | +₹29.75 | 15.9% | Yes — it is the first ten seconds of the product, and it survives as a gift |
| 4 | Container: 120 gm amber jar → 200 ml matte glass | +₹23.60 | 12.6% | Yes, but by finish and size rather than by price — a ₹47.20 jar does not look cheap |
| 5 | Wick: C1 → C2 | +₹3.54 | 1.9% | Only if it is the right wick. This is a burn-test decision, never a budget decision |
Lever one: grams
Weight is the first thing a customer experiences and the last thing they can argue with. It arrives before the scent, before the label copy and before any claim you make, and it is the one attribute of a handmade candle that cannot be faked with photography. At CSI prices it is also astonishingly cheap: the gap between a 120 g fill and a 200 g fill is 70.71 g of wax, which even in the dearer coconut-soy is ₹45.96 of material. The rest of the ₹73.85 in the table comes from choosing a wax that costs ₹251 more per kilo.
| Wax | Per kg | 120 g fill (109.09 g wax) | 200 g fill (181.82 g wax) | 250 g fill (227.27 g wax) | Cost of the 80 g step up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | ₹399 | ₹43.53 | ₹72.55 | ₹90.68 | ₹29.02 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | ₹55.35 | ₹92.26 | ₹115.32 | ₹36.91 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599 | ₹65.34 | ₹108.91 | ₹136.14 | ₹43.57 |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | ₹650 | ₹70.91 | ₹118.18 | ₹147.73 | ₹47.27 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax | ₹920 | ₹100.36 | ₹167.27 | ₹209.09 | ₹66.91 |
| Coconut Wax | ₹1,026.60 | ₹111.99 | ₹186.66 | ₹233.32 | ₹74.67 |
Read the last column as a price list for perceived generosity. On the wax you are most likely to choose for a premium candle, eighty extra grams of product costs you ₹47.27 — under five per cent of a ₹999 retail price — and it is the single change most likely to make a customer say the candle feels substantial. Compare that with the fifth row: choosing Premium Coconut Soy Wax over CSI 468 at the same 200 g costs ₹49.09 more per candle and buys you a wax whose page states no load, no melt point and no pour temperature — so you also inherit three unknowns.
| Size | Price | Per kg | 200g candles @ 10% of wax wt |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹325 | ₹650 | ≈2 |
| 1 kg | ₹650 | ₹650 | ≈5 |
| 5 kg | ₹3,185 | ₹637 | ≈27 |
| 10 kg | ₹6,370 | ₹637 | ≈54 |
Lever two: rupees per gram of oil
Fragrance is the second lever and the one most often bought badly, because makers compare bottle prices instead of per-gram prices. A 15 g trial bottle is the most expensive fragrance you will ever buy per gram and the cheapest way to shortlist a scent — those are both true and they are not in conflict. At a ₹999 price point you are buying production quantities, so compare at 100 g and above.
| Fragrance oil | Per gram at 100 g | Per gram at 1 kg | 18.18 g per candle (100 g pricing) | Stated soy load | Stated vanillin position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹3.42 | ₹3.07 | ₹62.22 | Up to 10% | 0% vanillin, no discolouration in white or pastel wax |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹3.90 | ₹3.74 | ₹70.91 | 6–10% | Vanillin present — test in white wax first |
| Jasmine | ₹4.30 | ₹3.92 | ₹78.18 | Up to 10% | 0% vanillin, no discolouration |
| Woody Oud | ₹4.53 | ₹4.53 | ₹82.38 | 6–10% for candles | Not stated on the page |
| Sandalwood | ₹5.03 | ₹5.03 | ₹91.39 | Up to 10% soy · up to 6% paraffin | 0% vanillin, no discolouration |
| Vanilla Bean | ₹7.90 | ₹7.65 | ₹143.62 | Up to 10% | 2.5% vanillin — potential discoloration |
| Coffee Vanilla Tobacco | ₹8.99 | ₹8.60 | ₹163.44 | Stated on the page as a perfume-grade candle rate | Will cause browning in white or light-coloured wax over time |
Two honest cautions about this table. First, price per gram is not a performance ranking. CSI publishes no hot-throw measurement, no room-coverage figure and no burn-hour count, and a dearer oil is not automatically a stronger one in your wax — the page's "strong throw" or "moderate to strong throw" is a description of the concentrate, not a test of your candle. Second, the load column and the vanillin column can both change your answer before price does: an oil that states 6–10% and an oil that states up to 10% give you different headroom, and a 2.5% vanillin oil in a pale wax is a visible risk. Rank by what the page publishes, then let your own burn test order the finalists. The method is in how to test hot throw before launching a candle fragrance and the premium-versus-cheap question in premium versus cheap fragrance oils.
| Size | Price | Per 100g | 200g candles @ 10% of wax wt |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 gm | ₹93.22 | ₹621.47 | ≈0 |
| 50 gm | ₹271.40 | ₹542.80 | ≈2 |
| 100 gm | ₹502.68 | ₹502.68 | ≈5 |
| 500 gm | ₹2,513.40 | ₹502.68 | ≈27 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,026.80 | ₹502.68 | ≈55 |
Lever three: the thirty rupees that change the unboxing
A ₹399 candle is usually handed over. A ₹999 candle is usually given as a gift, which means a second person meets it, and they meet the packaging before they meet the candle. Three CSI lines cover that experience for ₹29.75 a unit, which is 3% of a ₹999 retail price and 15.9% of the whole upgrade.
| Item | Pack | Per unit | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 × 11 × 8 cm) | 50 ₹1,121 · 100 ₹2,242 | ₹22.42 | The candle arrives as a product rather than an object in bubble wrap; also the surface your branding lives on |
| Premium Packing Tissue Paper (50 × 75 cm, 22 GSM) | Set of 100 sheets ₹650 | ₹6.50 | The sound and resistance of unwrapping — the cheapest sensory upgrade on this page |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll (1 inch) | 500 ₹413 · 1,000 (1.5 inch) ₹699 | ₹0.83 | Signals a brand that expects the candle to be burned properly; the page's own instruction is to trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn |
| Candle Packaging Paper | Pack of 50 ₹413 | ₹8.26 | An alternative inner wrap; the pack of 100 is currently sold out |
| The ₹999 candle's presentation | Box + tissue + care label | ₹29.75 | 3.0% of retail, 15.9% of the upgrade |
What not to spend more on
A premium specification is as much a list of refusals as a list of purchases. Four places where extra spending buys a customer nothing:
| Tempting spend | What it costs | Why it fails | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| A dearer wick "because it is a premium candle" | C1 → C2 is ₹3.54; a wooden wick is ₹59 against ₹9.44 | Wick size is decided by the melt pool, not the price point. The wrong wick at any price tunnels or soots | Burn-test C1, C2 and wooden, then buy the one that passed. A wooden wick is a design choice, not a grade |
| An additive whose page states no dosage | Candle Liquid Shiner ₹1,150 for 500 ml; Stearic Acid ₹57.82 for 100 g — neither states a usage rate | Without a stated rate you are formulating blind, and an additive that changes the pool changes the wick you already chose | Use additives that publish a rate — Vybar states 0.5–2%, and 0.5–1% for soy; Microcrystalline Wax Slab states 1–5% for hardening blends |
| Heavy dye to look "richer" | Black Candle Dye Liquid ₹590 for 50 ml; Red ₹472 for 50 ml — no CSI dye page states a dosage | Colourant competes with the wick. A heavier dose can change the burn you spent three weeks proving | Dye last, at the smallest dose that gives the shade, then burn-test again. See liquid dye versus dye chips |
| Fragrance above the lower stated ceiling | 13% of wax weight on Sandalwood would be 23.01 g — ₹115.67, against ₹91.39 at 10% | Sandalwood's page states up to 10% for soy. Past the lower ceiling the surplus does not bind: it separates and can drown the wick | Hold 10%, cure 14–21 days, and get the melt pool right. See smell strong without exceeding the load |
Building the ₹999 candle one upgrade at a time
Do not jump from one specification to the other. Change one thing, pour it, burn it, and check that the change survived contact with the wick — because three of these five upgrades affect the burn.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We would sell more by telling you that a premium candle needs the dearest wax, the dearest oil and an additive for every problem. Instead this page tells you that ₹29.18 of extra oil per candle is usually the wrong first move, that two additives in our own catalogue publish no usage rate, and that eighty more grams of a mid-priced wax will do more for your customer than any of it.
Every price and pack size here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. Stated loads, cure windows, flash points, vanillin positions and additive rates are quoted only where the product page states them; where a page states nothing — as every CSI dye page does about dosage, and as the Candle Liquid Shiner and Stearic Acid pages do about usage rate — this guide says so. The ₹399 and ₹999 retail prices are the maker's own targets: CSI sells no finished candles, sets no retail price and publishes no margin guidance. No burn-hour, room-coverage or throw-performance figure appears here because CSI publishes none.
