I Want to Make a Large Female-Torso Candle Using a Silicone Mould — What Type of Wax Should I Use so Fine Details Release Cleanly?
शेयर करना
Which wax gives the crispest detail? Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets are the usual first test for fine detail and clean release. Compare them with Soy Pillar Wax and with small microcrystalline additions in your own mould.
Can I use soy container wax for a torso? Not as a starting point. Container waxes are made to stay soft and stick to glass, which works against crisp release from a detailed silicone mould.
Why does my large torso have a hollow at the base? Large pieces shrink as they cool and often pull into a cavity near the wick and base. Poke relief holes as it sets and top up with a second pour.
Your mould, and why a torso is harder than it looks
First, the honest part: CSI does not list torso or body moulds. The silicone torso mould is yours, bought or made elsewhere. CSI supplies the wax, the blending wax, the wick, the dye and any fragrance that goes inside it.
A large torso is a sculptural mass. Unlike a small decorative piece, it holds a lot of wax in one block, and large masses behave differently as they cool. The outside sets first against the silicone while the core is still liquid; as the core cools it shrinks and pulls inwards, often leaving a hollow near the wick and the base. Fine surface detail — the line of a collarbone, a navel, the curve of a waist — is captured in the first seconds of contact and then has to survive the peel.
For this page the worked example is a torso whose real wax fill weighs 650 g, about 16 cm tall and 9 cm at its widest. Weigh your own fill and replace these figures.
Prepare the mould before any wax
Wash the silicone with mild soap, rinse and let it dry fully; any dust, lint or old wax shows up on a glossy torso surface. Most silicone does not need a release spray, and an oily coat can dull detail, so test without one first. Large flexible moulds sag under their own weight when full, which distorts the figure. Stand yours upside-down in a snug box or cradle so the walls are supported on every side.
Which wax releases fine detail
Detail release depends on two things: how sharply the wax takes the shape, and whether it lets go without tearing. Container waxes such as CSI 464 or the Chunks are built to stay creamy and grip glass, which is the opposite of what a torso needs. They are left out of this test.
Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets are the usual first choice for sculptural pieces: paraffin generally contracts as it sets, which helps it come away from silicone, and it gives a smooth, slightly glossy skin. Soy Pillar Wax, made for pillar and designer mould candles, gives a soy piece; CSI publishes no melt point or hardness for it, so judge its detail in your own mould rather than from a specification. Expect a more matte look from soy and check closely for crumbling at edges.
A small addition of Microcrystalline Wax Slab, stated for a 1–10% blend, is a common way to make either base a little more flexible so curved areas peel without chipping. It is your blend and your test; CSI sells no ready-made hard blend.
| Build | Recipe for 650 g | Wax cost | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paraffin pellets | 650 g paraffin | 650 × ₹0.354 = ₹230.10 | Sharp lines, glossy skin, clean shrink from mould |
| Paraffin + 3% micro | 630.5 g paraffin + 19.5 g micro | ₹223.20 + ₹5.83 = ₹229.03 | Less chipping at the collarbone and navel |
| Soy Pillar Wax | 650 g pillar | 650 × ₹0.60 = ₹390.00 | Matte finish; check edges for crumbling |
| Pillar + 5% micro | 617.5 g pillar + 32.5 g micro | ₹370.50 + ₹9.72 = ₹380.22 | Smoother release than straight soy |
Judge the four builds side by side, in daylight, the day after pouring. Look at the finest line on the figure first — usually the collarbone or the navel — then at the base edge, where tearing during the peel shows up as small bites out of the wax. The build that keeps both intact is your production wax, whatever its price.
Micro is priced here from the 1 kg pack (₹299.00, so ₹0.299 per g). The cost column shows why this choice should be made on appearance: the spread between the two paraffin builds is about a rupee.
Pouring and cooling a 650 g piece
Most torso detail problems start at the pour. CSI publishes no pour temperature for Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets, so make your own: pour three test torsos at three temperatures of your choosing, spaced a suggested 5°C apart, each read with a separate thermometer, and keep the one that gives the crispest surface without frost lines or trapped air.
Wick, scent and colour for a torso
Many torso candles are bought as décor and rarely burned to the end, but they still need a wick that burns safely if someone lights one. The Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are listed for diameters over 8 cm, yet their stated wick height of 10.16 cm is shorter than a 16 cm torso, so they cannot run the full height. Cut a length from the Braided Wick Roll instead: a suggested 22 cm (16 cm figure plus room to tie and trim) costs 0.22 m × ₹11.59 = ₹2.55 at ₹706.82 for 61 m. CSI publishes no size for the roll's braid, so burn-test it in your wax and stop any test that smokes or flares.
If you scent the torso, keep the load modest. Sandalwood's page states up to 6% for paraffin and pillars; at a suggested 5% of total weight the 650 g piece takes 32.5 g oil and 617.5 g wax, adding 32.5 g × ₹5.0268 = ₹163.37. Dye goes in last, after the wax build is chosen; Candle Dye Chips and Candle Dye Liquid work in both bases. Mica brushed into the mould gives a shimmering skin, but keep it away from the wick channel.
Buy this to test, buy this once validated
Buy this to test: two 650 g pours per base need 1,280.5 g of paraffin and 1,267.5 g of Soy Pillar Wax, so buy paraffin 1 kg + 500 g (₹354.00 + ₹177.00 = ₹531.00), Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg + 500 g (₹600.00 + ₹300.00 = ₹900.00), Microcrystalline Wax Slab 500 g ₹149.00, the Braided Wick Roll ₹706.82, a Pen Thermometer ₹354.00 and the Large Steel Pouring Pitcher ₹708.00. Total: ₹3,348.82.
Buy this once validated: the winning base in the pack that matches your order. Ten paraffin torsos at 650 g need 6.5 kg, so seven 1 kg packs at ₹354.00 each (₹2,478.00). Ten in Soy Pillar Wax need the 5 kg pack (₹3,000.00) plus 1 kg + 500 g (₹900.00), ₹3,900.00. These are raw-material figures only: packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST come on top from your own costs.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
