Mould candles · knot wicking
In a knot candle the wick does not follow the rope. It runs straight through the thickest part of the knot, and every step of the setup exists to keep it on that line.
13 cm
suggested braided wick length per 7 cm knot, including room to tie and trim
Quick answers — read this first
Does CSI sell knot candle moulds? No. CSI does not list knot moulds. Use your own silicone knot mould; CSI supplies the wax, wick, wick holders, dyes and fragrance oils.

Should the wick follow the curve of the knot? No. The wick runs straight down through the thickest solid part of the knot. The curves only make that line harder to find and hold.

Why does my wick drift during the pour? Common causes are a wick that is not primed or tensioned, a pour stream aimed at the wick, a mould that bulges or whose halves shift, and a single fast pour.

Which wick should I use in a knot candle? Cut a length from the Braided Wick Roll to thread through the mould, and test Eco C1 or Eco C2 where their length allows. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart.
The short answer
Find the line: Pour one unwicked knot and mark where a straight vertical path stays in solid wax from top to base.
Set the wick: Prime it, thread it on that line, tie it off outside the mould, and tension it with a bamboo wick holder.
Pour: In two stages, aimed at the mould wall, re-centring the wick between them.

Most drifting wicks are lost between the first and second pour, so the re-centring step earns its place.
Straight answer
I Want to Make Knot Candles but the Wick Does Not Stay Centred Through the Curved Shape — What Wick Setup and Mould Preparation Should I Use?
Run the wick straight through the thickest solid part of the knot, not along its curves, and set it up so nothing can push it off that line. CSI does not list knot moulds, so start with your own: pour one unwicked test knot, find where a vertical path stays in solid wax from top to base, and if the mould's wick hole is not on that line, make one that is. Prime a length of braided wick in wax, thread it, tie it off outside, seal the hole, and hold it taut with a Bamboo Wick Holder. Support the mould so it cannot bulge, pour in two stages against the wall, and re-centre between pours.
One line: find the true centre on a test knot, then prime, tension and re-centre the wick so it stays on that straight line.
The Bamboo Wick Holder, a set of 5 at ₹118.00, holds a primed wick taut and centred across the open end of a knot mould while the wax sets.

The wick runs straight, the knot does not

A knot candle looks as if the wick should wind through the rope. It never does; it drops straight down the middle.

CSI does not list knot moulds, so this page assumes a silicone knot mould you have bought elsewhere. CSI supplies everything that goes into it: the wax, the braided wick roll with tabs, the bamboo wick holders, dyes and fragrance oils.

The key to a centred wick is understanding where it actually goes. A rope-knot candle is a compact mass of looping curves, but the wick is a straight vertical line from the top of the knot to the base, passing through the thickest solid part. If that line is in the right place, the flame burns down through solid wax. If it drifts even a few millimetres, it can pass through a gap between two loops, come close to an outer curve, or exit the side of the candle.

The curves cause two practical problems. They make it hard to see where the true centre is, because the top of the knot is rarely symmetrical. And the mould itself, often in two halves or with deep undercuts, can flex or shift as it fills, dragging the wick with it. Every step below deals with one of those problems.

Find the true centre before you wick

Pour one test knot with no wick at all, in the wax you plan to use. After release, look at it from above and from each side. You are looking for a vertical path, top to base, that stays inside solid wax the whole way and sits roughly in the middle of the mass. Mark the entry point at the top and the exit point on the base with a pencil.

Compare those marks with the wick hole in your mould. Many knot moulds come with a hole that is close but not exact, because the top of a knot is uneven. If the hole is off your line, you can make a new one through the silicone with a wick needle of your own at the marked point; seal the old one so wax cannot leak through it.

Re-melt the test knot
The unwicked casting is not waste. Once you have marked and checked the line, re-melt it for the real pour. Soy Pillar Wax and paraffin pellets can both be re-melted cleanly.

Wick setup and mould preparation

Fault finder
Wick drift in knot moulds, causes and fixes
What you see Likely cause Fix to try
Wick exits the side of the knot Wick hole off the true centre line Find the line on a test casting; move the hole
Wick curves into an S shape Unprimed, floppy wick Prime in wax and let it set straight before threading
Wick leans to one side at the base No tension, or holder not centred over the mark Tie off outside the hole and pull taut into a centred holder
Wick moved during the pour Stream aimed at the wick, or one fast pour Pour against the wall in two stages
Whole knot is lopsided Mould bulged or halves shifted Band the mould and stand it in a snug support

1
Clean and dry the mould.Wash in mild soapy water and dry completely. Old wax in a two-part seam stops the halves closing evenly, which tilts the wick channel.
2
Prime the wick.Cut a length from the Braided Wick Roll, a suggested 13 cm for a 7 cm knot. Dip it in melted wax, pull it straight and let it set. A stiff wick holds a straight line through the curves.
3
Thread and tie off.Push the primed wick through the hole at the top of the cavity (the candle's top is at the bottom of the mould). Tie a knot or tape it outside so it cannot pull back in, and seal the hole.
4
Support the mould.Band a two-part mould firmly so the halves stay aligned, and stand it upright in a box or cradle so the silicone cannot bulge as it fills.
5
Tension and centre.Lay a Bamboo Wick Holder across the open end, pull the wick taut through it, and line it up over your base mark from two directions.

A two-stage pour that keeps the wick still

Pour the first stage slowly against the mould wall, never onto the wick, until the cavity is about two-thirds full. A stream hitting the wick pushes it sideways, and a fast single pour sets up currents that drift it before the wax grips.

When the first pour has thickened enough to hold the wick but is not yet set, check the wick from above and the side and nudge the holder back over your mark. This is the step most often skipped, and it catches the drift that tension alone does not stop. Then make the second pour, which also fills the shrinkage hollow that forms around the wick as the knot cools; poke a relief hole near the wick first if a skin has formed.

CSI publishes no pour temperature for Soy Pillar Wax or the paraffin pellets. Read your wax with a separate thermometer, pour both stages at your recorded baseline, and keep it the same for every knot so results are comparable.

If you pour several knots at once, give each mould its own wick holder and check them in the same order every time, so none is missed at the re-centring stage. A suggested routine is to pour the first stage into all moulds, then walk back along the line re-centring each one, then top up in the same order.

Centred at the top, off at the base. The holder was centred but the mould was leaning. Check that the support box sits level, and centre the holder by looking straight down, not at an angle.

Wax, wick and quantities for twenty knots

Use a pillar-grade wax, because a knot stands on its own: Soy Pillar Wax (₹600.00 per kg) or Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets (₹354.00 per kg). Container waxes are too soft for its curves. For the wick, the cut braid always reaches through a threaded mould; Eco C1 (₹5.90) or Eco C2 (₹9.44) can be candidates where their unpublished length is enough, so check before relying on them. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart; burn a finished knot on a heat-safe tray, never unattended, and expect thin outer loops to remain as a shell.

The worked batch is 20 knots at a real fill of 180 g. Wax: 20 × 180 g = 3.6 kg, and a suggested 10% allowance brings it to 3.96 kg, so four 1 kg packs: 4 × ₹600.00 = ₹2,400.00 in Soy Pillar Wax, or 4 × ₹354.00 = ₹1,416.00 in paraffin. Wick: 20 × 0.13 m = 2.6 m, costing 2.6 × ₹11.59 = ₹30.13 from a ₹706.82 roll of 61 m, or ₹1.51 per knot. Wax plus wick is 180 × ₹0.60 + ₹1.51 = ₹109.51 per knot in soy, or 180 × ₹0.354 + ₹1.51 = ₹65.23 in paraffin, before dye, scent, packaging, labour, shipping and GST.

Buy this to test: Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg ₹600.00 (or paraffin pellets 1 kg ₹354.00), the Braided Wick Roll ₹706.82, a Bamboo Wick Holder set of 5 ₹118.00 and a Pen Thermometer ₹354.00. In Soy Pillar Wax that is ₹1,778.82, plus your own knot mould. Pour the unwicked test knot, then three wicked knots, and burn one.

Buy this once validated: the remaining wax for the batch and one wick holder per mould you pour at the same time. The roll from your test kit covers the wick for all twenty knots and many more.

Argue against interest
The fix is technique, not more product.
A drifting wick is almost never solved by a different wax or a pricier wick. A test casting, a primed wick and a re-centre between pours cost almost nothing, and they are where to start.
Find the straight line inside the curves, and the wick will burn down it.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep a wick centred in a knot candle?
Find the true centre on an unwicked test casting, prime the wick so it is stiff, tie it off outside the mould, hold it taut with a centred wick holder, pour in two stages against the wall, and re-centre between pours.
Does CSI sell knot candle moulds?
No. CSI does not list knot moulds. Use your own silicone knot mould, and buy the wax, braided wick roll, bamboo wick holders, dyes and fragrance oils for it from CSI.
Why does my knot candle wick come out of the side?
Usually the mould's wick hole is not on the straight line through the thickest part of the knot, or the wick drifted during pouring. Check the line on a test casting and move the hole if needed.
What wick should I use for knot candles?
CSI publishes no wick sizing chart. A length cut from the Braided Wick Roll suits threaded knot moulds; Eco C1 and Eco C2 are candidates where they are long enough. Burn-test a finished knot.
Should I prime the wick for a mould candle?
Yes, for curved moulds. Dipping the wick in melted wax and letting it set straight makes it stiff enough to hold a straight line through the knot while the wax is poured.
How much wax do I need for 20 knot candles?
Weigh one real fill of your mould. At 180 g each, 20 knots need 3.6 kg, and a suggested 10% allowance makes 3.96 kg, so four 1 kg packs of Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test.
