First 1,000 candles · complete list
Every line on a 1,000-candle list is necessary; buying it before it is proven is what makes it unnecessary. Test the wax, wick and scents, pilot 100, then buy production in batches you can see selling.
₹2,57,179.98
CSI materials for the first 1,000 × 200 g candles including a 29-candle test kit · ₹257.18 a candle · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What does the complete list cost? ₹2,57,179.98 of CSI materials: a ₹8,027.18 test kit plus four production orders. ₹257.18 a candle, before labour, packaging, freight and GST.

How do I avoid unnecessary inventory? Buy in stages: test kit → 100-candle pilot (₹25,844.80) → batches of 300, each after the previous one is selling. Up front you would commit ₹2,52,557.58 before a candle sells.

What goes in the test kit? 29 candles: CSI 464 vs Soy Pearl, three wick types, six candidate oils — all from the smallest in-stock packs. See stage 0.

Is staged buying more expensive? Only by rounding: ₹4,622.40 over 1,000 candles here, because most CSI core lines are priced flat per unit — and that slack is carried stock you net off the next order.
The short answer
Answer: About 193.4 kg of wax, 16.82 kg of oil, 1,031 jars and 1,021 wicks and stickers — bought as a test kit, a pilot of 100 and three batches of 300, not one order.
Why: Unnecessary inventory comes from buying before the wax, wick and scents are proven and before sales confirm the mix. Staging costs little because most CSI core prices are flat.
Method: BOM → gross requirement with allowances → stage 0 test kit → pilot → sales gates → batches → reorder system. The full procurement system.
Cash committed before each stage sells: staged vs all at once First 1,000 × 200 g candles · CSI 464 · four scents · White Matte jars · Eco Thin C1 · grey = staged, dashed outline = all bought up front Test kit ₹8.0k Pilot 100 ₹33.9k +300 ₹108.3k +300 ₹182.7k +300 ₹257.2k ₹252.6k All at once: ₹2,52,557.58 committed before a single candle sells. Staged: ₹33,871.98 before the pilot sells, and each later batch is bought only after the one before it is selling. Total difference over 1,000 candles: ₹4,622.40.
Cumulative CSI spend at each stage. Buying everything at once commits the whole amount before the first candle sells (dashed outline, the same at every stage). Staged buying commits the test kit and the pilot first, then adds one batch at a time only after the previous batch is selling. By the end the totals are within a rounding difference of each other.
Straight answer
I want to make my first 1,000 candles without buying unnecessary inventory — what should my complete raw-material purchase list look like?
The complete list is about 193.4 kg of wax, 16.82 kg of fragrance oil, 1,031 jars and 1,021 wicks and stickers — but buy it in five stages, not one order. For 1,000 × 200 g candles at 8% (2% rejects, 3% pour loss, 1% breakage — labelled assumptions), stage 0 is a 29-candle test kit (₹8,027.18) that decides the wax (CSI 464 vs Natural Soy Pearl), the wick (Eco Thin C1, Thick C2 or Cotton Braided) and which of six oils launch. Stage 1 is a 100-candle pilot (₹25,844.80). Stages 2–4 are batches of 300 (₹74,436.00 each), each bought only when the previous batch is selling. Total: ₹2,57,179.98 of CSI materials, ₹257.18 a candle. Buying everything at once costs only ₹4,622.40 less, because most CSI core lines are priced flat — but commits ₹2,52,557.58 before a single candle sells, and leaves you holding a full run of any scent that fails.
One line: the full list is necessary; buying it before it is proven is not — test kit, pilot, then batches you can see selling.
The complete CSI list for your first 1,000 × 200 g candles is ₹2,57,179.98 — a ₹8,027.18 test kit, then four batches of 100, 300, 300 and 300 — or ₹257.18 a candle including the tests. Bought all at once it costs ₹4,622.40 less in total, but commits ₹2,52,557.58 before anything sells; staged, you commit ₹33,871.98 before the pilot sells. Start with the test kit's wax: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, ₹2,537.00 for 5 kg.

The whole list, bought in five steps instead of one

Unnecessary inventory is mostly inventory bought before it was proven.

A first run of 1,000 candles needs, in round numbers, 193.4 kg of wax, 16.82 kg of fragrance oil, about 1,031 jars and 1,021 wicks and stickers, once a 2% reject allowance, 3% pour loss on wax and oil and 1% glass breakage are included (labelled working assumptions). None of that is unnecessary. What makes inventory unnecessary is timing and certainty: an oil bought for 900 candles before anyone has smelt it, a wick bought by the thousand before a full-life burn, jars for batch four sitting in cartons while batch one is still unsold.

So the answer to "what should my complete purchase list look like?" is a list in stages. Stage 0 is a small test kit that decides the wax, the wick and which scents launch. Stage 1 is a pilot of 100 candles in the approved formula. Stages 2–4 are production batches of 300, each bought only when the one before is selling. Every line in every stage is rounded to real, in-stock CSI packs, and every stage's order is priced. The total over 1,000 candles is almost exactly the same as buying everything at once; the cash committed before you know anything is a fraction of it.

The CSI principle
Test small, pilot small, then buy production in batches you can see selling.
The full 1,000-candle list is the plan. The purchase orders are the stages. Nothing goes to production quantity until the stage before it has proved it.

The BOM and the full requirement

The example candle is 200 g in the White Matte Glass Jar (the reader's weighed fill — CSI does not publish this jar's fill) at an 8% load: 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax per candle. The four launch scents are split 30/25/25/20 by expected demand — the reader's estimate, not CSI data: British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Dark Vanilla Oud. They are on the list because they passed this page's example test stage; British Rose, Roasted Coffee and Eucalyptus Spearmint sit near the top of CSI's best-selling sort, which is a reason to test them first, not proof they will sell for you.

Allowance stack in the series' order: tests (stage 0) → 2% rejects ÷ 0.98 → 3% pour loss on wax and oil → 1% breakage on glass → round up to packs
From 1,000 candles to a gross requirement
Material Per candle × 1,000 After rejects After loss / breakage Gross requirement
Wax (CSI 464) 184 g 184.00 kg 187.76 kg × 1.03 193.39 kg
Oil (four scents) 16 g 16.00 kg 16.33 kg × 1.03 16.82 kg
Jars 1 1,000 1,020.4 ÷ 0.99 1,031
Wicks 1 1,000 1,020.4 — 1,021
Stickers 1 per wick 1,000 1,020.4 — 1,021

The per-scent oil requirement follows the split: British Rose 5,045 g, Roasted Coffee 4,204 g, Eucalyptus Spearmint 4,204 g, Dark Vanilla Oud 3,363 g. 1,000 × 200 g at 8% and splitting 1,000 candles across four fragrances go deeper into this step, and allowances for 1,000 saleable candles argues each percentage.

Stage 0: the test kit that decides everything else

Before any production purchase, three questions need answers that only test candles can give: which wax, which wick, and which scents. The test kit below answers all three with 29 candles. Wax: four candles each in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax (the cheapest-per-kilo container soy), same oil, wick and jar. Wick: three candles each on Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided in CSI 464 — CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart, so the burn test decides. Scent: two candles each of six candidate oils. Test quantities carry a 5% loss allowance; burn-test method is in burn-test samples for 100 candles and how many sample wick sizes to add.

Item For Packs Price
CSI 464 25 candles 1 × 5 kg ₹2,537.00
Natural Soy Pearl 4 candles 1 × 1 kg ₹450.00
British Rose 19 candles 3 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g ₹1,215.40
Roasted Coffee 2 candles 1 × 50 g ₹230.00
Eucalyptus Spearmint 2 candles 3 × 15 g ₹205.32
Dark Vanilla Oud 2 candles 3 × 15 g ₹315.06
Jasmine 2 candles 1 × 50 g ₹230.00
Citrus Lemon 2 candles 1 × 50 g ₹170.00
Eco Thin C1 40 wicks 2 × 20-pack ₹236.00
Eco Thick C2 3 + spare 1 × 10-pack ₹94.40
Cotton Braided 3 + spare 1 × 10-pack ₹120.00
White Matte Glass Jar 29 jars 3 × 10-pack ₹2,124.00
Wick stickers 29 1 × 40-sheet ₹100.00
Test kit total 29 test candles ₹8,027.18

Three notes on the kit. CSI 464 is bought as 1 × 5 kg at ₹507.40 a kilo — the same rate as every other CSI 464 size from 1 kg — and whatever the tests leave carries into the pilot if it wins. Natural Soy Pearl starts at 1 kg. Eco Thin C1's 10-pack is out of stock on the 4 October re-check, so the smallest is 20. If a scent fails its two candles, it simply never appears on the production list — that is the cheapest dead stock you will ever avoid.

Suppose the tests come out as the example assumes
The rest of this page assumes CSI 464 and Eco Thin C1 pass and four of the six oils launch. If Soy Pearl wins on your sheet, its production rate is lower (₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg) — the wax line below drops to ₹82,512.00 for the full requirement. If a different wick wins, swap the wick line; Thick C2 is ₹9.44 and Cotton Braided ₹12.00 a wick against Thin C1's ₹5.90.

Stages 1–4: pilot, then three production batches

Each batch is bought by the batch before it.

Each stage's order covers that stage's candles with the full allowance stack, rounded to the cheapest real in-stock packs. Nothing carries between stages in this plan except rounding slack, which you net off the next order on the reorder sheet — so in practice later orders are a little smaller than shown.

1
Pilot: 100 candles in the approved formula₹25,844.80. Pour, cure, burn one of each scent to the end, and sell or sample the rest. The pilot tests the process and the market, not the formula — the formula was settled in stage 0.
2
Gate 1: is the pilot selling?Decide your own threshold before the pilot — for example, a share of the 100 sold or committed within a set number of weeks. If one scent clearly lags, shrink its share in batch 2 instead of buying its full 30%.
3
Batch 2: 300 candles₹74,436.00. Buy it when gate 1 passes. If wax is your standard, the CSI 464 line is 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg.
4
Gates 2 and 3, batches 3 and 4₹74,436.00 each. Re-split the oil lines by what actually sold in the previous batch, and net off any carried stock.
5
After 1,000: switch to the reorder systemOnce you have three batches of sales history, stop buying in fixed batches and move to safety stock and reorder points per material.
The expensive shortcut: buying all 1,000 candles' materials after the test kit. It saves ₹4,622.40 in rounding over the four staged orders, but commits ₹2,52,557.58 before the first candle sells. If one scent — say Dark Vanilla Oud, the smallest share — turns out not to sell after the pilot, the up-front plan has already bought about 3,064 g of it that nothing else uses, roughly ₹17,510.70. Fix: buy in stages; the rounding cost is the price of finding out cheaply.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Buying all 1,000 candles' worth from us today would be a ₹2,44,530.40 order. We would rather you placed a ₹8,027.18 test order and a ₹25,844.80 pilot order, and came back for the rest when your candles are selling. Most of our lines are priced flat — CSI 464, White Matte jars and Eco wicks cost the same per unit at any listed pack — so waiting costs you only rounding, and that rounding is stock you net off the next order.

After the first 1,000

By the end of batch four you have what the first thousand candles were really for: a tested formula, a wick you trust, and three batches of sales by scent. That history is the input the rest of the procurement cluster needs — monthly sales into material requirements, what to buy frequently and what in bulk and which shared materials are worth a volume quote. The complete procurement system ties them into one flow.

Every line on the 1,000-candle list is necessary. Buying it before it is proven is what makes it unnecessary.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

If your budget is fixed before your volume is, start from the budget side instead: the smallest spend to validate a candle idea and growing from ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh inventory stage the same purchases by rupees rather than candles. What to buy in bulk and what in testing sizes for the first 100 is the same logic one order of magnitude smaller.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. One large order would suit us better than five small ones. This page recommends the five, shows that staging costs almost nothing extra on our flat-priced lines, and names our cheapest container wax as a test candidate against the one used in the plan.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026; jar, wick and sticker prices were re-checked 4 October 2026. Requirements, the allowance stack, the test kit, each stage's order, the aggregated list, staged versus up-front cash and the drop-a-scent exposure are computed and shown to two decimals.

The 1,000-candle target, the 200 g fill, the 8% load, the 30/25/25/20 scent split, the six candidate oils, the test-candle counts, the 5% test loss, the 2% reject, 3% pour-loss and 1% breakage allowances, the stage sizes and the lid, label and box prices are labelled examples or working assumptions. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to make 1,000 candles?
In this page's example (200 g, CSI 464, White Matte jars, Eco Thin C1, four oils), about ₹2,57,179.98 of CSI materials including a test kit — ₹257.18 a candle before labour, packaging, freight and GST. Your jar choice moves the total most.
How much wax do I need for 1,000 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%: 184 kg of wax net, about 193.4 kg with a 2% reject and 3% pour-loss allowance. Fragrance load is a share of the finished weight.
Should I buy all materials for 1,000 candles at once?
Not for a first run. Test, pilot 100, then buy batches as each sells. On flat-priced lines the total barely changes (₹4,622.40 here) while the cash at risk falls from ₹2,52,557.58 to ₹33,871.98 before the pilot sells.
How many test candles do I need before production?
This plan uses 29: four per wax for two waxes, three per wick for three wicks, and two per candidate oil for six oils — labelled working practice. More cycles to the end of the candle improve confidence.
Which fragrance oils should I launch with?
The ones that pass your test candles. This page's example launches British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Dark Vanilla Oud; the first three sit near the top of CSI's best-selling sort, which is a reason to test them, not proof they will sell for you.
Does CSI sell a starter kit for 1,000 candles?
No fragrance starter kit or sample pack is sold. Build the test kit from the smallest in-stock sizes on this page, and ask on WhatsApp if you want help assembling it.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: load is a share of finished weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). The 200 g fill is the reader's weighed figure; CSI does not publish the White Matte jar's fill. The launch scents, split, test outcomes, stage sizes and allowances are labelled examples. CSI's page for CSI 464 states up to 10% fragrance and a 60-month shelf life; Natural Soy Pearl has no published ceiling, temperatures or shelf life. "Near the top of CSI's best-selling sort" refers to the collection's sort order on the 24 September pull, not sales figures. CSI publishes no lead times, delivery times, minimum order quantities, volume-discount figures, jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), wick-size-per-diameter charts, throw data or shelf-life figures for its oils. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
