Wax melts · snap bars
A snap bar must break on the line in the hand and survive the parcel. Test pillar soy, paraffin and two blends at one load to find the balance.
₹1,490.12
the four-batch snap test in pillar soy, paraffin and CSI 464
Quick answers — read this first
Can I make snap bars in container soy wax? Usually it bends rather than snaps. Use CSI 464 only as a small softening partner, for example 30% in a Soy Pillar Wax blend.

Which CSI wax snaps most cleanly? Paraffin pellets are generally crispest and Soy Pillar Wax keeps the bar all-soy. Test both, plus two blends, at the same oil load.

Should I add microcrystalline wax to snap bars? Generally no. It tends to make wax more flexible. Leave it out unless your bars chip badly.

What load should I start a snap test at? A suggested 8% of total weight with Woody Oud, which states 6–10% in soy and 6–8% in paraffin.
The short answer
Best bases to test: Soy Pillar Wax and Fully Refined Paraffin Pellets, plus Pillar 70 : 464 30 and Pillar 50 : Paraffin 50.
Two tests: A snap score on every segment at 24 and 72 hours, and a packed drop test.
Cost per 90 g bar: ₹82.30 in Soy Pillar Wax or ₹72.12 in a 50:50 paraffin blend with Woody Oud.

Straight answer
I Want to Make Snap-Bar Wax Melts That Break Cleanly — How Do I Choose a Wax Hard Enough for the Format?
Start from a firm base rather than a container soy. Test Soy Pillar Wax and paraffin pellets on their own, plus a Pillar 70 : 464 30 blend and a Pillar 50 : Paraffin 50 blend, all at a suggested 8% of total weight in one oil. Score every segment for a clean snap on the line at 24 and 72 hours, then drop each packed bar three times to see whether it survives transit. The right wax is the one that passes both, not simply the hardest. Repeat the winner in a second oil family before scaling. The test set costs ₹1,490.12.
One line: the snap-bar wax you want is crisp in the hand and tough in the parcel, proven by a snap score and a drop test.
Soy Pillar Wax is the all-soy base to test first for snap bars, alone or with a little CSI 464.

What a snap bar asks of the wax

A snap bar has to break cleanly in the customer’s hand and not at all in the courier’s van.

A snap bar is a strip of segments joined by thin score lines. The customer presses one segment down against the edge of the bar and it should part along the line with a crisp break, leaving square edges and no crumbs. That is a very different demand from a clamshell melt, which only has to release from plastic, or a candle, which never has to break at all.

Two failures sit on either side of the target. A wax that is too soft bends at the score line, tears unevenly and smears on the fingers. A wax that is too brittle snaps in the wrong place, chips at the corners, or breaks apart in the parcel before anyone opens it. So the job is not to find the hardest wax. It is to find a wax that is crisp enough to snap and tough enough to travel, at the fragrance load you want to sell.

The snap-bar mould is your own. None of the CSI moulds named in this series is a snap-bar mould, so check the current range or use one you already have; this page covers the wax, the oil and the quantities, and assumes you already have a mould whose segment weight you can measure.

Which CSI waxes are crisp enough to consider

Container soy waxes such as CSI 464, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are designed to stay soft and cling to glass. On their own they usually bend rather than snap, so treat them as a softening partner in a blend, not as the base. The two firmer bases in the CSI range are these.

Soy Pillar Wax

Made for pillar and designer mould candles, which have to stand unsupported and come out of a mould cleanly. It keeps the product all-soy. Its page publishes no fragrance load or melt point, so your test sets the load.

Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets

Sold for pillars and containers, and generally crisper than soy. It changes the product into a paraffin or blended bar, which you must describe honestly on the label. Oil pages often state a lower paraffin ceiling; Woody Oud states 6–10% in soy and 6–8% in paraffin, so a load of 8% of total weight sits inside both.

Two additives can tune the result in a second round. Vybar, with a stated range of 0.5–2%, is widely used to firm wax. Microcrystalline wax, stated 1–10%, tends to make wax more flexible, which is the opposite of what a snap bar needs, so leave it out of a snap test unless chipping is your problem.

A four-batch snap test, weighed out

Snap-bar segment weights vary between moulds, so weigh one full bar from yours. As an example only, suppose a full six-segment bar weighs 90 g. Each test batch below is 270 g, enough for three bars, at a suggested 8% of total weight: 248.4 g of wax and 21.6 g of Woody Oud.

Snap-test matrix
Four 270 g batches at 8% Woody Oud
Batch Base Wax weights Oil What it tells you
A Soy Pillar Wax 248.4 g 21.6 g Is all-soy pillar wax crisp enough on its own
B Paraffin pellets 248.4 g 21.6 g The crispest base in the range
C Pillar 70 : 464 30 173.88 g + 74.52 g 21.6 g Whether a little container soy fixes chipping
D Pillar 50 : Paraffin 50 124.2 g + 124.2 g 21.6 g A middle route if A bends and B chips

Add it up. Soy Pillar Wax: 248.4 + 173.88 + 124.2 = 546.48 g, so a 1 kg pack. Paraffin pellets: 248.4 + 124.2 = 372.6 g, so a 500 g pack. CSI 464: 74.52 g from a 500 g pack. Oil: 4 × 21.6 = 86.4 g from a 100 g pack of Woody Oud.

Test-kit cost
Live CSI prices for the snap test
Item Pack Price
Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg ₹600.00
Fully Refined Paraffin Pellets 500 g ₹177.00
CSI 464 flakes 500 g ₹260.00
Woody Oud fragrance oil 100 g ₹453.12
Total ₹1,490.12

Working: 600.00 + 177.00 + 260.00 + 453.12 = ₹1,490.12. Your own mould and packaging are extra. Woody Oud’s flashpoint is not published on its page, so ask CSI for the MSDS on WhatsApp and add the oil well below that figure, never with the melter at its maximum setting.

How to score a snap, and the transit test that goes with it

1
Rest the bars before testing.A suggested first test at 24 hours and a second at 72 hours. Snap behaviour often changes as the wax finishes setting, and CSI states 48–72 h as the minimum soy cure before scent testing.
2
Snap one segment the same way each time.Hold the bar flat on a table edge with the score line at the edge and press the overhanging segment down with one finger.
3
Score the break.Clean snap on the line, snap off the line, crumbly break, or bend without breaking. Score every segment of all three bars, not just the first.
4
Run a transit test.Pack one bar from each batch in your real packaging and drop the pack from about 30 cm onto a hard floor three times, as a suggested routine. Open it and count broken segments.
5
Check scent last.Put one segment of the two best batches in a warmer. Firmer bars can liquefy more slowly, so confirm the scent still opens up.
Reading the results
What each pattern points to
Pattern Likely cause Next test
Bends, does not snap Wax too soft or load too high Move towards paraffin, or drop the load to 7%
Snaps but off the line Score line too shallow, or wax too brittle Check the mould first, then try batch C
Crumbles at the edges Wax too brittle Add a little container soy, as in batch C
Clean snap, breaks in the drop test Brittle for transit Batch D, or better packing between segments
Clean snap, survives the drop A candidate Repeat once in a second oil family

Fragrance oil softens wax, and different oils do it differently. A bar that snaps cleanly in Woody Oud may bend in a lighter citrus oil at the same load. Once you have a winner, repeat the snap and drop tests in one oil from each family you plan to sell before you scale up.

Cost per bar and what to buy

Suppose batch A, all Soy Pillar Wax, wins. A 90 g bar at 8% holds 82.8 g of wax and 7.2 g of oil. The wax costs 82.8 × (₹6,000.00 ÷ 10,000 g = ₹0.60) = ₹49.68 at the 10 kg price. The oil costs 7.2 × (₹4,531.20 ÷ 1,000 g = ₹4.5312) = ₹32.62 at the 1 kg price. The bar’s material cost is ₹49.68 + ₹32.62 = ₹82.30.

If batch D wins instead, the wax portion splits into 41.4 g of paraffin at ₹354.00 ÷ 1,000 g = ₹0.354, so ₹14.66, and 41.4 g of pillar wax at ₹0.60, so ₹24.84. That is ₹39.50 of wax, and ₹72.12 per bar with the same oil. Packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST are not included in either figure.

The ₹82.30 − ₹72.12 = ₹10.18 difference per bar is real money at volume, but do not let it decide the recipe. If your brand promise is soy, batch D breaks that promise; if it is not, choose whichever batch passes both the snap and the drop.

Buy this to test

1 kg of Soy Pillar Wax, 500 g of paraffin pellets, 500 g of CSI 464 and 100 g of one oil. Add 50 g of Vybar only if every batch bends.

Buy this once validated

The winning base in 10 kg packs for pillar wax, or repeated 1 kg packs for paraffin, which CSI lists only up to 1 kg, plus approved oils in 500 g or 1 kg packs. Weigh the first production bars against your 90 g reference, because a few grams of overfill changes how cleanly the score line breaks.

Argue against interest
The hardest wax is not the best snap-bar wax.
A bar that snaps beautifully on the bench but breaks in the parcel is a refund. Score the drop test as seriously as the snap, even if it means a slightly softer recipe.
Snap on the line in the hand, stay whole in the van.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

what is the best wax for snap bar wax melts
Test Soy Pillar Wax and paraffin pellets as bases, then blends such as Pillar 70 : CSI 464 30 or Pillar 50 : Paraffin 50. Pick the batch that snaps cleanly on the line and survives a packed drop test.
why do my snap bars bend instead of snapping
The wax is too soft for the format or the fragrance load is too high. Container soy often bends. Move towards Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin, or reduce the load by one point and test again.
why do my snap bars break during shipping
The wax may be too brittle for transit. Try a blend with a little container soy or a pillar and paraffin mix, improve the packing between segments, and drop-test each version before shipping.
how much fragrance oil can i add to snap bars
Start at a suggested 8% of total weight and check the oil page. Woody Oud states 6–10% in soy and 6–8% in paraffin, so 8% fits both. Raise it only if the bar still snaps cleanly.
does csi sell snap bar moulds
None of the CSI moulds named in this series, such as flowers, coffee beans and pillars, is a snap-bar mould, so check the current range or use your own. CSI supplies the wax, oils and additives covered here.
how much does a snap bar wax melt cost to make
As an example, a 90 g bar at 8% Woody Oud costs ₹82.30 in Soy Pillar Wax or ₹72.12 in a 50:50 pillar and paraffin blend, before packaging, labour, shipping and GST.
