I Want to Make Spiral Candles Using Silicone Moulds — How Do I Position the Wick Through a Narrow Irregular Mould?
शेयर करना
Which wick suits a narrow spiral? Start by testing a braided wick cut from CSI's 61 m roll against Eco C1. CSI publishes no wick size for it; your spiral's narrowest section decides.
How do I keep the wick centred? Thread it through a hole pierced at the exact tip of the mould, knot or tab it underneath, and pull it taut at the open end with a bamboo wick holder.
Which wax should a spiral use? A free-standing wax: CSI Soy Pillar Wax or Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets. Container waxes such as CSI 464 are too soft for a twisted shape.
Why a spiral mould fights the wick
A spiral candle is a taper or short pillar whose outer surface twists around a central axis. The cross-section is narrow, often only a few centimetres, and it rotates as you move up the candle. When hot wax flows into that shape it swirls along the grooves rather than dropping straight down. A loose wick, especially one simply dropped in from the open end, gets carried with that swirl and ends up lying against one of the inner ridges.
That matters more in a spiral than almost any other shape. A wick that is off-axis by a few millimetres will burn through the thin wall on one side, drip down the grooves and tunnel on the other. Because the shape is narrow, there is no margin to absorb the error. So the question in the title is really two questions: how to fix the wick on the axis before the pour, and which wick is thin enough for the narrowest section yet strong enough to stay upright.
First, an honest point. CSI does not list spiral moulds (checked October 2026). Everything below assumes a silicone spiral mould you already own or have sourced elsewhere. What CSI can supply is the material that goes through that mould: free-standing wax, cut-to-length braided wick, Eco wicks, bamboo wick holders and fragrance oils.
The threading method that keeps the wick centred
Most spiral moulds are one-piece silicone, poured upside down with the tip closed and the base open. That orientation is your advantage. The tip is the one point you can locate precisely, and the open base gives you somewhere to hold the wick under tension.
Tension is the whole trick. A wick pulled straight between two fixed points cannot follow the swirl, because there is no slack for the wax to push. If you notice the wick wandering after the pour, the fix is almost always more tension or a stiffer, freshly primed wick, not a different mould.
Which CSI wax and wick to test for a spiral
The spiral needs a wax that stands on its own, releases from silicone and holds the twist when handled. That rules out the container waxes, CSI 464, Chunks, CSI 468, Pearl and CSI 400, which are designed to stay soft and adhere to glass. Your two realistic starting points are CSI Soy Pillar Wax, sold as soy chunks for pillar and designer mould candles, and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets. CSI publishes no melt point or hardness for Soy Pillar Wax, so its behaviour in your spiral is something you find by pouring it, not by reading a specification.
For the wick, a spiral pushes you towards cut-to-length braid, because you need a length that matches your mould height plus an anchor at the tip and a tail at the base. The Braided Wick Roll gives 61 metres with 100 wick tabs for ₹706.82. Run it against Eco C1, the thin Eco wick at ₹5.90 each, if a C1 length is long enough for your mould. CSI publishes no burn rate, flame height or melt-pool diameter for any wick, so which one suits your spiral is a test result, not a size we can give you.
| Component | Starting choice to test | Why | Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mould | Your own spiral silicone mould | CSI does not list spirals | None from CSI |
| Wax | CSI Soy Pillar Wax | Free-standing soy chunks | Paraffin pellets |
| Fragrance | Sandalwood at 5% (starting point) | Page: up to 6% for pillars | Unscented first pour |
| Wick A | Braid cut from the 61 m roll | Length matched to the mould | Eco C1 |
| Centring | Bamboo wick holder across base | Holds tension | Your own clip |
| Dye | None for the first test | Dye also affects the burn | Add after wick passes |
A costed 90 g spiral, worked through
Suppose you fill your spiral mould with water, weigh it, convert, and find it takes about 90 g of wax. That is your figure, because CSI cannot know the volume of a mould it does not sell. Using the series convention, fragrance load is a percentage of the total candle weight. At 5% Sandalwood, a 90 g spiral is 4.5 g oil and 85.5 g wax. Sandalwood's page states up to 6% for paraffin and pillars, so 5% sits inside that, with room to move.
Now the wick. Your mould is, say, 20 cm tall. Add 2 cm to anchor at the tip and 3 cm of tail for the holder, and each wick is 25 cm. From a 61 m roll that gives 61 ÷ 0.25 = 244 lengths, although the pack only includes 100 tabs, so knot the extra lengths at the tip instead.
| Item | Working | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Soy Pillar Wax | 85.5 g × (₹600.00 ÷ 1,000 g) = 85.5 × ₹0.60 | ₹51.30 |
| Sandalwood oil | 4.5 g × (₹5,026.80 ÷ 1,000 g) = 4.5 × ₹5.0268 | ₹22.62 |
| Braided wick | ₹706.82 ÷ 61 m = ₹11.59 per m; × 0.25 m | ₹2.90 |
| Total materials | ₹51.30 + ₹22.62 + ₹2.90 | ₹76.82 |
That ₹76.82 excludes the mould itself, packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. Packaging for a twisted candle, which needs to stop the ridges chipping, is your own cost to add. Note too that the Sandalwood price uses the 1 kg pack. Sandalwood's 50 g and 100 g packs were out of stock on the October 2026 pull, so a test buy would be the 15 g pack at ₹93.22, which is enough for three scented 90 g spirals at 4.5 g each with a little spare.
Checking the spiral before you buy more
Demould one spiral after it has fully set. Your demould time is your own measured figure; a narrow spiral in pillar soy may set faster than a thick pillar, but do not rush it, because a twist that is pulled while warm can distort. Slice a second spiral lengthways with a warm knife and look at the wick line. It should run straight up the centre of every cross-section.
Then burn a third, cured spiral on a heat-resistant plate, never unattended. Watch for the flame drifting to one side, wax running down a single groove, or the thin upper section collapsing. If the braid is too large, the flame will be tall and the narrow wall will blow out; try Eco C1. If C1 drowns in the melt, go back to braid. Stop any test that smokes or flares. When adding the oil, keep the wax below Sandalwood's published 203°C flashpoint, which your pour temperature will be far beneath anyway, and never run a melter at its maximum setting.
| Stage | What to buy from CSI | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Test | Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg | ₹600.00 |
| Test | Braided Wick Roll, 61 m, 100 tabs | ₹706.82 |
| Test | Eco C1, 20 wicks | ₹118.00 |
| Test | Bamboo Wick Holder, set of 5 | ₹118.00 |
| Test | Sandalwood 15 g | ₹93.22 |
| Once validated | Soy Pillar Wax 10 kg | ₹6,000.00 |
| Once validated | Sandalwood 1 kg | ₹5,026.80 |
The test column comes to ₹600.00 + ₹706.82 + ₹118.00 + ₹118.00 + ₹93.22 = ₹1,636.04. If the spiral passes with braid, skip the Eco C1 pack on your next order. Pillar Wax costs the same per kg at every pack size, so there is no saving in jumping to 10 kg early; buy the large pack only when you know the wax releases cleanly from your mould.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
