Scaling · 100 to 10,000
At 100 candles a month you buy like a hobbyist with a plan: a couple of wax bags and a bottle per scent. At 10,000 you use nearly two tonnes of wax a month and buy on an agreement. Between the two, the method of buying changes at four points. Knowing them tells you when to stop clicking "add to cart" and start asking for a quote.
1,913.6 kg
of wax a month at 10,000 candles of 200 g (8% load, 4% allowance), against 19.1 kg at 100 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do purchasing quantities change from 100 to 10,000 candles? Linearly in kilos, from 19.14 kg to 1,913.60 kg of wax and 1.66 kg to 166.40 kg of oil a month. But how you buy changes in steps: listed packs up to about 1,000 a month, monthly quotes around 2,500, standing orders at 5,000 and a supply agreement at 10,000.

Where do CSI's listed packs stop? Oils at 1 kg per scent, container waxes at 10 kg bags, Natural Soy Pearl at 50 kg, wicks at 1,000, and White Matte jars are listed in packs of 5. Beyond that, quantities are quoted on WhatsApp and no volume discount figure is published.

Does the cost per candle fall as I scale? Only slightly at listed prices: ₹262.66 at 100 and ₹257.81 from 1,000 in the example, all from oil moving to the kilo. Anything further comes from quoted volume pricing, which you have to ask for.

When should I move to the next stage of buying? When your orders are more about counting packs than choosing them. For example, when you need more than about ten 10 kg bags a month, or several kilos of one scent, it is time to ask for a quote. See the triggers.
The short answer
Per 1,000 candles: 200 g at 8% with a 4% allowance: 191.36 kg wax, 16.64 kg oil, 1,000 wicks, 1,000 jars.
Stages: 100–500: listed packs · 1,000: kilos and 50 kg wax · 2,500: monthly quote · 5,000: standing order · 10,000: supply agreement plus backup supplier.
Listed limits: 1 kg per oil · 10 kg container wax · 50 kg Natural Soy Pearl · 1,000 wicks · White Matte jars in 5s.
Six stages from 100 to 10,000 candles a month — what changes in how you buy 100 / month 19.1 kg wax 500 / month 95.7 kg wax 1,000 / month 191.4 kg wax 2,500 / month 478.4 kg wax 5,000 / month 956.8 kg wax 10,000 / month 1,913.6 kg wax Wax 10 kg bags Oils 100–500 g Wax 10 kg bags Top oils 1 kg Wax 10 kg / 50 kg Oils in kilos Monthly quote Oils > 1 kg quoted Standing order Batch reservation Supply agreement + backup supplier Listed CSI packs cover the first three stages; from about 2,500 a month, buying moves to WhatsApp quotes.
Bar heights are schematic and show the stage, not the scale, because wax use grows a hundredfold from left to right. The labels underneath are the point. The first three stages can be bought from CSI's listed packs. From about 2,500 candles a month the quantities outgrow the listings, and buying becomes a quote, then a standing order, then an agreement.
Straight answer
I want to scale a candle business from 100 to 10,000 candles a month — how should my wax, fragrance oil, wick, jar and packaging purchasing quantities change as production grows?
The quantities scale in a straight line. Every 1,000 candles of 200 g at 8% need about 191.36 kg of wax, 16.64 kg of oil, 1,000 wicks and 1,000 jars, with a 4% allowance on wax and oil. So 100 candles a month is 19.14 kg of wax and 10,000 is 1,913.60 kg. What changes in steps is how you buy. Up to about 500 a month, listed packs do the job: 10 kg wax bags, 100 g to 1 kg oils, wick packs and jars in fives. At around 1,000, wax moves to 50 kg sacks (Natural Soy Pearl is the only wax CSI lists at 50 kg), top oils move to several kilos, and jars in fives stop making sense. From about 2,500, you have outgrown the listings. CSI lists oils only up to 1 kg per scent and container waxes to 10 kg, so buying becomes a monthly WhatsApp quote. At 5,000 it becomes a standing order, and at 10,000 a supply agreement with a qualified backup. Packaging follows its own curve, through ever-longer print runs from your own suppliers. At listed prices, cost per candle barely moves, from ₹262.66 to ₹257.81 in the example. Any further saving comes from quotes, and no discount figure is published.
One line: kilos grow in a straight line; the way you buy changes four times — packs, kilos, quotes, agreements.
The largest listed wax pack in the CSI catalogue is Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹21,240.00 for 50 kg (₹424.80 a kilo, the same rate as its 5 kg and 10 kg, and 5.6% below its 1 kg price). At 1,000 candles a month that is four sacks, not twenty bags.
Shop Natural Soy Pearl Wax

The six-stage ladder

The recipe never changes as you grow. The shopping list does, and so does the way you shop.

Every figure here uses the same candle: 200 g at an 8% load, so 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil, with a 4% allowance on both for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption; plan 3–5%). One wick and one jar per candle. The wax is Natural Soy Pearl, chosen because it is the only CSI wax listed up to 50 kg. No fragrance ceiling is quoted for it in our data, so treat 8% as a working load and check the wax's product page. If you use Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (rated up to 13%), the kilos are identical and only the price changes.

Read the table from left to right as a change in the method of buying, not just the amount. At 100 and 500 a month everything is a listed pack, and the only decision is which size. At 1,000 the numbers still fit the listings, but they get awkward: twenty 10 kg bags, or two hundred 5-packs of jars. From 2,500 they do not fit at all. Nobody should buy 48 bags or 500 five-packs one click at a time. That is the point to ask for a quote on your actual monthly quantities.

Material cost per candle and monthly spend · Natural Soy Pearl ₹424.80/kg · oil at the catalogue median · wick ₹5.90 · jar ₹70.80

5,000 ₹6.00/g (median 1 kg) ₹257.81 ₹12,89,065.44
10,000 ₹6.00/g (median 1 kg) ₹257.81 ₹25,78,130.88

The per-candle figure moves once, when the oil rate drops from the median 100 g price (₹629.00) to the median 1 kg price (₹5,999.00). That is ₹4.84 a candle. Everything else is flat at listed prices. Pearl is ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg to 50 kg, wicks ₹5.90 at every pack and jars ₹70.80. So the monthly bill grows almost exactly a hundredfold, from ₹26,265.53 to ₹25,78,130.88. Whatever you negotiate at the top stages is the only thing that bends that line, and CSI publishes no discount figure, so plan on the listed rate until a quote says otherwise.

Median oil rates are a placeholder
Your range is not the median. A range built on ₹3–4-a-gram oils such as British Rose or Fresh Strawberries sits well below these figures. One built on inspired-by oils at ₹10–₹24 a gram sits far above. Re-run the spend table with your own scent mix. The quantities do not change, only the rupees.

Wax: bags, then sacks, then contracts

Wax is the heaviest and most predictable line, which makes it the first to move to bulk formats. At 100 a month you need 19.14 kg: two 10 kg bags of Pearl at ₹4,248.00 each, with a little carried over. At 500 it is 95.68 kg, which is ten bags or two 50 kg sacks. At 1,000 it is 191.36 kg, where four 50 kg sacks at ₹21,240.00 each become the natural format. The price per kilo is the same, but there are far fewer units to handle and order.

At 2,500 (478.40 kg) the order is nearly ten sacks a month. At 5,000 (956.80 kg) it is about nineteen, and at 10,000 (1,913.60 kg) about thirty-eight. At those volumes the questions are no longer about pack size. They are about batch consistency (can a month's wax come from one production lot?), delivery rhythm (weekly or fortnightly drops rather than one mountain of sacks) and price (a quoted rate for a committed monthly volume). All of those are conversations, not listings. I Need 1,000 Identical Candles — Should I Buy All the Wax from One Batch to Reduce Production Variation? covers why one batch matters for large identical runs.

Buying the whole quarter's wax because the sack is bigger. A maker moving to 50 kg sacks sometimes buys three months at once "since it's bulk now". At 2,500 a month that is about 1.4 tonnes of wax, over ₹6 lakh at ₹424.80 a kilo, sitting in a workshop. The sack changes the format, not the cover. Keep wax at the weeks of cover your delivery rhythm needs, which I Want to Grow from 500 to 2,000 Candles per Month — How Much Working Capital Will I Need Just for Raw-Material Inventory? prices out.

Fragrance: bottles, kilos, then quotes

Oil scales differently from wax because it is split across scents. Total oil grows in a straight line, from 1.66 kg a month at 100 candles to 166.40 kg at 10,000. What matters for buying is kilos per scent. With 12 scents at 10,000 a month, an average scent needs about 13.87 kg a month, and a top scent several times that. CSI lists oils up to 1 kg per scent, so from the 2,500 stage your top scents are well past the listing, and they should be quoted.

Oil per scent · 16.64 g per candle · even split shown; your top scents will need more
When each scent outgrows the 1 kg pack
Candles / month Total oil Per scent, 12 scents Per scent, 25 scents Buying
100 1.66 kg 0.14 kg 0.07 kg 100 g–500 g bottles
500 8.32 kg 0.69 kg 0.33 kg 1 kg for top scents
1,000 16.64 kg 1.39 kg 0.67 kg Several 1 kg per top scent
2,500 41.60 kg 3.47 kg 1.66 kg Quote per scent beyond 1 kg
5,000 83.20 kg 6.93 kg 3.33 kg Quote per scent beyond 1 kg
10,000 166.40 kg 13.87 kg 6.66 kg Quote per scent beyond 1 kg

Two things follow. First, the number of scents decides how early you hit the quote stage. A 25-scent range at 2,500 a month averages 1.66 kg per scent, while a 12-scent range averages 3.47 kg. The top of either range is past the listing, but the tail of a wide range can stay on 100 g bottles for a long time. I Have 30 Candle Fragrances but Most Sales Come from 10 — How Should I Change My Fragrance Oil Purchasing Quantities Based on Actual Demand? shows how to split the buying by demand tier. Second, per-gram price breaks on the listed packs are rare. For 52 of 91 oils the 1 kg costs within 1% of the 100 g per gram, and 24 save 5% or more. So the reason to move top scents to kilos and then quotes is supply security and fewer orders, with any price benefit to be confirmed in a quote.

Wicks, jars and packaging

Wicks are the easiest line to scale. Eco Thin C1 costs ₹5.90 a wick at every pack, from 10 to 1,000. At 100 a month buy the 100-pack (₹590.00). From 1,000 a month buy 1,000s (₹5,900.00), one to ten packs a month. Because the price is flat, hold them deep, six to eight weeks, and take wicks off the critical list. Wick size for your jar is not published, so settle it with burn tests before you scale.

Jars scale badly on a retail listing. The White Matte Glass Jar is listed in packs of 5 (₹354.00). At 100 a month that is 20 packs, which is fine. At 1,000 it is 200 packs, and at 10,000 it is 2,000, which is not a sensible way to buy. The 200 ml Salsa jar with lug cap is listed up to 100 (₹2,950.00). From the 500–1,000 stage, ask for a jar quote on WhatsApp. At 10,000, jars need the same treatment as wax: a supply agreement and a pre-tested backup jar, because running out of jars stops everything. I'm Producing Thousands of Candles a Month — Is It Better to Negotiate with One Main Raw-Material Supplier or Maintain Backup Suppliers for Critical Materials? covers the backup.

Packaging is the one line CSI mostly does not supply. We list Premium Packing Tissue Paper at ₹650.00 per 100 sheets, but no labels, boxes, lids (apart from capped jars) or mailers. Its scaling curve is a printer's curve. Longer runs usually lower the unit price, but they raise the minimum order and the risk of printing labels for a scent that stops selling. As an example only, a label that costs ₹10.00 on a short run might cost ₹4.00 on a long one. Get your own printer's prices at each stage. Match print runs to your demand tiers, with long runs for top scents and short runs for the tail.

Melting capacity by stage

Purchasing and melting scale together, because wax you cannot melt is wax you should not have bought yet. CSI lists a 1-litre mini electric melter at ₹2,360.00 and an imported electric wax melter at ₹21,240.00 (10 kg capacity) or ₹25,960.00 (20 kg capacity). Melter throughput is not published, so the figures below count full melts only. How many melts a day your workshop can do depends on your own heat-up, pour and cleaning times.

Full melts needed per month · wax quantity ÷ melter capacity · throughput not published
How many melts each stage needs
Candles / month Wax / month Full 10 kg melts Full 20 kg melts Per working day (26 days), 20 kg
100 19.14 kg 1.9 1.0 0.04
500 95.68 kg 9.6 4.8 0.18
1,000 191.36 kg 19.1 9.6 0.37
2,500 478.40 kg 47.8 23.9 0.92
5,000 956.80 kg 95.7 47.8 1.84
10,000 1,913.60 kg 191.4 95.7 3.68

At 100 a month, a hob and a pouring jug, or the mini melter, is enough. At 1,000, a 10 kg melter doing about 19 full melts a month is realistic. At 10,000, even a 20 kg melter needs almost four full melts every working day, which usually means several melters and a production layout designed around them. If your purchasing plan outruns your melting plan, the wax waits in sacks. I Need to Produce 500 Candles in Seven Days — How Do I Calculate Whether My Current Melting Equipment, Moulds and Workspace Can Handle the Production Volume? shows how to check capacity before committing to volume.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We list 50 kg sacks, 1,000-wick packs and melters, and it would suit us if you bought for the stage you hope to reach. Buy for the stage you are at. At our listed prices, moving up a stage early saves almost nothing per candle: the only step in the example is the oil's move to the kilo, worth ₹4.84 a candle. Stock bought for 5,000 a month while you sell 1,000 is simply cash on a shelf.

When to move up a stage

Move up when the current stage becomes clumsy, not when you plan to grow. These triggers are working rules of thumb, not thresholds from data. Use them as prompts to re-plan.

1
100 → 500: when a top scent empties a 100 g bottle every weekMove that scent to 500 g or 1 kg, check whether it is one of the 24 oils with a real kilo break, and buy wax in 10 kg bags. I'm Growing from 100 to 1,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Raw-Material Purchasing Strategy Change at Each Stage? covers this range in detail.
2
500 → 1,000: when you order more than about ten wax bags a monthSwitch to 50 kg sacks where your wax is listed in them, buy wicks in 1,000s and ask for a jar quote instead of buying hundreds of 5-packs.
3
1,000 → 2,500: when any scent needs more than a few kilos a monthThat scent has outgrown the listed 1 kg. Ask for a monthly quote covering wax, top oils and jars together. At What Monthly Candle Production Volume Should I Move from Retail-Sized Raw-Material Packs to Wholesale Purchasing? discusses the move from retail packs to wholesale.
4
2,500 → 5,000: when every month's quote looks the sameTurn it into a standing order with an agreed delivery rhythm and, where possible, batch reservation for wax and signature oils.
5
5,000 → 10,000: when one stockout would cost more than a backupFormalise supply with your main supplier and qualify a backup for wax and jars. Hold safety stock for signature oils, which cannot have a true second source.
6
At every stage: re-check the melter, the space and the cashMelting capacity, storage and working capital all have to move with purchasing, or the extra stock just waits.
The CSI principle
Buy for the stage you are in. Plan for the stage you are going to.
The quantities for the next stage are arithmetic, so work them out early. The purchases wait until the current stage's buying becomes clumsy. That keeps cash in the business while you grow into the next format.

Where to go next depends on the stage you are at. I Want to Grow from 500 to 2,000 Candles per Month — How Much Working Capital Will I Need Just for Raw-Material Inventory? prices the working capital each stage needs. I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production? keeps materials in step as quantities grow. A hundredfold growth in candles is a hundredfold growth in kilos, but only four changes in how you buy.
At 100 candles you shop. At 10,000 you contract. Everything in between is learning when to stop shopping.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page shows where our listed packs stop (1 kg per oil, 10 kg container wax, 50 kg Natural Soy Pearl, 1,000 wicks, jars in fives) and tells you not to buy ahead of your stage, because our listed prices barely reward it.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Melter, tissue, Salsa jar and wick pack prices come from the 25 September pull. The White Matte jar was verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Quantities, spend and melts are arithmetic on those figures, shown to two decimals.

The 200 g candle, the 8% working load (no ceiling is quoted for Natural Soy Pearl in our data), the 4% allowance, the median oil rates, the 12- and 25-scent splits, the example label prices and the stage triggers are working assumptions. For 200 g candles at an 8% load, 184 g of wax each, or 1,840 kg, and 1,913.60 kg with a 4% allowance. That is about 38 sacks of 50 kg or 191 bags of 10 kg a month, a volume for a supply agreement rather than listed packs.
how much fragrance oil for 1000 candles
At 16 g per 200 g candle (8%), 16 kg, or 16.64 kg with a 4% allowance, split across your scents. With 12 scents that averages about 1.39 kg per scent, around the top of CSI's listed 1 kg pack.
when should a candle business buy raw materials wholesale
When listed packs become clumsy: more than about ten 10 kg wax bags a month, several kilos of one scent, or hundreds of jar 5-packs. That is usually between 1,000 and 2,500 candles a month. Ask for a quote on your actual monthly quantities.
what is the largest pack of candle wax at candlemakingsuppliesindia
Natural Soy Pearl Wax in 50 kg at ₹21,240.00 (₹424.80 a kilo). Container waxes such as Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 464 are listed up to 10 kg. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp.
does cost per candle go down when scaling production
Only slightly at listed prices. In our example, materials cost ₹262.66 per candle at 100 a month and ₹257.81 from 1,000, entirely from oil moving to the kilo. Further savings depend on quoted volume pricing, and no discount figure is published.
what equipment do I need to make 1000 candles a month
At about 191 kg of wax a month, a 10 kg electric melter doing roughly 19 full melts a month is a realistic core, plus pouring jugs, a scale and wick tools. Melter throughput is not published, so time your own melts before relying on a figure.
Scale in stages
Packs, then kilos, then quotes, then agreements. Move up when the current stage gets clumsy.
