Business Economics · Retail Packs to Wholesale
"Wholesale" is not a volume you reach all at once. Wax outgrows the listed packs early, a single scent later, and wicks much later still. Move each material when it crosses its own line, and ask for a quote only where your volume gives the quote something to beat.
~272
candles a month — where wax (10 kg bags) is the first material to outgrow the listed packs, on a working rule of five of the largest pack a month · 200 g candles
Quick answers — read this first
At what volume should I move to wholesale purchasing? Material by material, not all at once. On a working rule of five of the largest listed pack a month: wax at about 272 candles a month, a single scent at about 312 candles of that scent, Salsa jars at about 500, Natural Soy Pearl wax at about 1,359, and Eco wicks at about 5,000.

What counts as wholesale at CSI? Quantities beyond the listed packs — wax above 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl above 50 kg), oils above 1 kg, jars and wicks in cartons. These are quoted on WhatsApp, and no volume discount figure is published.

Will wholesale be cheaper per unit? Only a quote will tell you. On listed packs most wax, Eco wicks, White Matte jars and 52 of 91 oils are already priced flat per unit above their smallest pack, so the listed rate is the benchmark a quote must beat, landed and after holding cost.

What if I sell 400 candles a month? In the example, wax (73.6 kg, 7.4 bags a month) and White Matte jars (80 packs of 5) have crossed their lines; the top scent (2.24 kg a month) is close; wicks are nowhere near.
The short answer
Working rule: You have outgrown a listed pack when you buy five or more of the largest one every month — or, for items sold only in small packs, 100 units an order.
Thresholds: Wax (10 kg) ~272 candles · one scent (1 kg) ~312 candles of it · Salsa jar (100) ~500 · White Matte (5s) ~100 · Soy Pearl (50 kg) ~1,359 · Eco wicks (1,000) ~5,000.
The benchmark: A wholesale quote must beat the listed per-unit rate at the largest pack, landed, after the holding cost of any larger drop. I'm Getting Better Wholesale Prices on 100 Kg of Wax — How Many Months of Consumption Should I Have Before Ordering That Much? gives the break-even formula.

Monthly candles at which each material outgrows CSI's listed packs (working rule: five of the largest pack a month) White Matte jar · 5-pack only ~100 candles (100 jars an order) Wax · Chunks / CSI 464 · 10 kg ~272 candles One scent · 1 kg ~312 candles of that scent Salsa jar · 100-pack ~500 candles Natural Soy Pearl · 50 kg ~1,359 candles Eco wicks · 1,000-pack ~5,000 candles 200 g candles at 8% (184 g wax, 16 g oil). The thresholds differ by a factor of fifty — there is no single 'wholesale volume'.
Each bar is the monthly production at which buying that material would mean five or more of its largest listed pack every month (for the White Matte jar, sold only in 5s, 100 jars an order). The rule is a working judgement, not a CSI policy. The spread is the point: jars and wax outgrow the listed packs long before wicks do.
Straight answer
At what monthly candle production volume should I move from retail-sized raw-material packs to wholesale purchasing?
There is no single volume — each material crosses its own line. A useful working rule: you have outgrown the listed packs for a material when you are buying five or more of its largest pack every month. For 200 g candles at an 8% load, that puts Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (listed to 10 kg) at about 272 candles a month; a single fragrance (listed to 1 kg) at about 312 candles of that scent; the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (listed to 100) at about 500; Natural Soy Pearl Wax (listed to 50 kg) at about 1,359; and Eco Candle Wicks (1,000-packs) at about 5,000. The White Matte Glass Jar, listed only in 5s, is worth a carton quote from around 100 jars an order. At CSI, "wholesale" means quantities beyond the listed packs, quoted on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published. So treat the listed per-unit rate as the benchmark: a quote is worth taking only if it beats that rate once delivery and the holding cost of any larger drop are counted. Move material by material — usually wax and jars first, your top scent next, wicks last.
One line: the first material to outgrow the price list is usually wax; the last is usually wicks.
One listing already goes to wholesale size: Natural Soy Pearl Wax is listed at 50 kg for ₹21,240.00 (₹424.80 a kilo) — the same per-kilo rate as its 5 kg and 10 kg. If your formula uses it, you can buy at production scale without a quote. No fragrance ceiling is quoted in this series for it; check the product page.

What "wholesale" actually means

Wholesale is not a price. It is a way of buying: quantities agreed with the supplier rather than picked from a list.

For a candle maker buying from CSI, there are two ways to buy. Listed packs are the sizes on the product pages — wax to 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl to 50 kg), fragrance to 1 kg, Eco wicks to 1,000, jars in packs of 5 to 100. Anyone can order them at the listed price. Quoted volumes are anything beyond those — 50 kg of CSI 464, 5 kg of one oil, jars by the carton — agreed on WhatsApp for your quantities and delivery. That second route is what this page calls wholesale.

It helps to be clear about what the listed packs already give you. On CSI's catalogue, the unit price for most materials is already flat above the smallest pack: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg (₹599.90 at 10 kg), CSI 464 is ₹507.40 at 1, 5 and 10 kg, Eco wicks are ₹5.90 each from 10 to 1,000, and 52 of 91 oils cost within 1% per gram at 100 g and 1 kg. So a small maker is not paying a hidden "retail premium" on most lines. The main exceptions are the 15 g fragrance tester (a median 23.1% per-gram premium over 100 g), the 24 oils whose kilo saves 5% or more, Natural Soy Pearl's 5.6% step at 5 kg, and a few jars and wicks with pack breaks.

Why that matters for the threshold
Because most listed prices are flat, the reason to move to quoted volumes is rarely "the listed pack is too expensive". It is usually that you are handling too many packs, ordering too often, or need a delivery rhythm and a stock commitment a price list cannot give — and, at enough volume, that a quote may beat the listed rate. I Want to Reduce My Raw-Material Cost by Buying in Bulk — Which Candle-Making Supplies Usually Make Sense to Bulk-Buy First? shows where the listed unit price does fall.

Thresholds, material by material

The working rule — five or more of the largest listed pack a month — marks the point where you are effectively buying wholesale quantities in retail packaging. It is a judgement, not a CSI rule; some makers will move at three packs, some at ten. Here it is applied to a 200 g candle at an 8% load: 184 g of wax, 16 g of oil, one wick and one jar.

200 g candles at 8% · largest listed packs from CSI listings, pulled 24–25 September 2026 · the five-pack rule is a working judgement
Where each material outgrows the listed packs
Material Largest listed pack Candles one pack serves Threshold (5 packs a month) Listed unit price at that pack Break already captured?
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 10 kg ₹5,999.00 54.3 ~272 candles ₹599.90 / kg None to capture (flat; 10 kg fractionally dearer)
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 10 kg ₹5,074.00 54.3 ~272 candles ₹507.40 / kg None to capture (flat)
Natural Soy Pearl Wax 50 kg ₹21,240.00 271.7 ~1,359 candles ₹424.80 / kg Yes — 5.6% from 5 kg
Any one fragrance 1 kg (e.g. Sandalwood ₹5,026.80) 62.5 ~312 candles of that scent Varies by oil Only for the 24 oils with a 5%+ kilo saving
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 1,000 ₹5,900.00 1,000 ~5,000 candles ₹5.90 each None to capture (flat)
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar 100 ₹2,950.00 100 ~500 candles ₹29.50 each Yes — 26.5% from 50
White Matte Glass Jar 5 ₹354.00 (only pack) 5 ~100 candles (100 jars an order) ₹70.80 each No larger pack listed

The spread is fifty-fold. A maker making 300 candles a month has outgrown the listed wax packs and — if they use White Matte jars — the jar pack, but is nowhere near outgrowing the 1,000-pack of wicks, which covers 3.3 months at that volume. Fragrance depends on the range, not the total: a 300-candle business with ten evenly split scents uses 480 g of each, well within the listed packs, while one with a signature scent at half its sales uses 2.4 kg of it. That is why "at what volume" has to be asked per material and, for fragrance, per scent.

The CSI principle
Outgrow the price list one material at a time.
Move a material to quoted volumes when you are buying several of its largest listed pack every month and its use is steady. Keep everything else on listed packs. A business can — and usually should — buy wax wholesale while still buying most scents by the 100 g.

A 400-candle month, checked

Take a business making 400 candles a month in six scents, with the leading scent at 35% of sales. Here is each material against its threshold.

400 candles a month · 200 g at 8% · six scents · working rule: five of the largest listed pack a month
Which materials have crossed the line?
Material Monthly use Largest listed packs a month Crossed? Next step
Wax (Chunks or CSI 464) 73.6 kg 7.4 × 10 kg Yes Ask for a quote on 50–100 kg with a delivery rhythm
White Matte jars 400 80 × pack of 5 Yes Ask for a carton quote
Sandalwood 2,240 g (140 candles) 2.24 × 1 kg Close Kilos; quote if it keeps growing
Citronella 1,280 g (80 candles) 1.28 × 1 kg No 1 kg / 500 g
Blue Ocean 960 g (60 candles) 0.96 × 1 kg No 1 kg / 500 g
Gardenia 768 g (48 candles) 0.77 × 1 kg No 1 kg / 500 g
Honeydew Melon 640 g (40 candles) 0.64 × 1 kg No 100 g / 500 g
Coffee Vanilla Tobacco 512 g (32 candles) 0.51 × 1 kg No 100 g / 500 g
Eco wicks Thin C1 400 0.4 × 1,000 No One 1,000-pack every two and a half months

So this business should already be asking for a quote on wax and jars, buying its top scent in kilos — 2.24 kg of Sandalwood a month, over two kilos — and keeping the other five scents on listed packs. Wicks stay on the listed 1,000-pack for a long time yet. The same business at 1,000 candles a month would push its top two scents over the line as well; I'm Growing from 100 to 1,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Raw-Material Purchasing Strategy Change at Each Stage? walks through that growth stage by stage.

The mistake that looks like graduating. Reaching 400 candles a month and moving everything to wholesale at once — a quote for each of six scents, 5,000 wicks, several months of jars. Half of those lines have nowhere near the volume to justify it, and several of the scents will be bought in quantities that take months to use. Move the materials that have crossed their lines. Leave the rest on listed packs, where most of them are already at their lowest unit price.

What a wholesale quote must beat

A quote is only good news if it beats the listed rate after everything the listed rate did not ask of you.

When you ask for quoted volumes, compare like with like. The benchmark is the listed per-unit price at the largest listed pack — not the 1 kg sticker, and not the 15 g tester. Then adjust both sides to landed cost: delivery, and whether the quote asks you to take a larger drop than you would otherwise hold. A larger drop has a holding cost, which I'm Getting Better Wholesale Prices on 100 Kg of Wax — How Many Months of Consumption Should I Have Before Ordering That Much? turns into a formula: a discount d pays for up to 1 + 2d ÷ h months of cover, where h is your own monthly holding rate.

What a hypothetical 5% below listed would be worth per candle · 200 g at 8% · Sandalwood as the example oil
Where a quote moves the per-candle cost most
Line Listed cost per candle Hypothetical 5% off Saving per candle At 400 candles a month
Wax (Chunks, 184 g) ₹110.22 ₹104.71 ₹5.51 ₹2,204.32
Jar (White Matte) ₹70.80 ₹67.26 ₹3.54 ₹1,416.00
Oil (Sandalwood, 16 g at 1 kg) ₹80.43 ₹76.41 ₹4.02 ₹1,608.58
Wick (Eco Thin C1) ₹5.90 ₹5.61 ₹0.30 ₹118.00

The 5% is a hypothetical, not a CSI figure; no volume discount is published. The table shows where any quote matters most: wax carries the most rupees per candle, followed by the oil and the jar, so a given percentage off those lines is worth most, while even a generous quote on wicks is worth under thirty paise a candle. That lines up with the thresholds: the materials that outgrow the listed packs first are also the ones where a quote has the most to offer. I Want to Reduce My Candle Cost Without Reducing Quality — Should I Negotiate Bulk Wax, Fragrance, Jars or Packaging First Based on Their Contribution to COGS? ranks negotiation priorities by share of cost of goods.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We quote larger volumes on WhatsApp, and we would happily quote every line you buy. But for a material that has not crossed its threshold, a quote is unlikely to beat what you already pay: our listed wax, Eco wicks, White Matte jars and most oils are flat per unit above the smallest pack. Ask for quotes on the lines where your volume is genuinely large, give us the monthly quantities and delivery rhythm, and judge the answer against the listed rates on this page.
The listed per-unit price at the largest pack is the benchmark. A quote earns its place only by beating it, landed.

Listings that behave like wholesale already

Three products where the listed packs already give production-scale buying — useful to know before asking for a quote.

1
Soy wax · listed up to 50 kg
Natural Soy Pearl Wax
The only wax listed at wholesale size: 50 kg for ₹21,240.00. The per-kilo rate is ₹424.80 from 5 kg upward, so the 5.6% break is captured early and the 50 kg adds convenience rather than a lower price. It outgrows the listed packs only at about 1,359 candles a month on the five-pack rule. Test before switching a proven formula.

Herbal · the steepest kilo break in the collection
Citronella Fragrance Oil
The largest listed break in the collection: 62.3% cheaper per gram at 1 kg than 100 g — and most of it arrives at 500 g (₹2.95 a gram against ₹7.67). For an oil like this, the listed 500 g and 1 kg already behave like wholesale pricing; stay on them until your volume passes the five-kilo line.

Woody · the example's leading scent · flat above 100 g
Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
The top scent in the 400-candle example, at 2.24 kg a month. Its price is flat at ₹5.03 a gram from 100 g to 1 kg, so kilos save handling, not money. As it approaches five kilos a month, it becomes the first fragrance worth a quote.

The other materials in the example. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹5,999.00 for 10 kg) and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹5,074.00 for 10 kg) are listed to 10 kg; Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 to 1,000 (₹5,900.00); 200 ml Salsa Glass Jars to 100 (₹2,950.00); White Matte Glass Jars in 5s (₹354.00). Other scents in the example: Blue Ocean, Gardenia, Honeydew Melon and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco.

Making the move

1
List monthly use for each material over three monthsWax in kilos, each scent in grams, jars and wicks in units. Use actual production, and check it is steady rather than a one-off spike.
2
Divide by the largest listed packIf the answer is five or more for a material — or 100 units an order for jars sold in 5s — it has crossed the working threshold.
3
Check what the listed packs already give youFor flat-priced lines, the benchmark is the listed per-unit rate. For break-bearing lines (Pearl wax, Salsa jar, 24 oils), make sure you are already on the pack that captures the break.
4
Ask for a quote with volumes and rhythmMonthly quantity, delivery frequency, pin code. A supplier can quote a rhythm (for example 50 kg every three weeks) more usefully than a one-off lump.
6
Keep a fallbackMoving a critical material to one quoted source is a supplier decision too. I'm Producing Thousands of Candles a Month — Is It Better to Negotiate with One Main Raw-Material Supplier or Maintain Backup Suppliers for Critical Materials? covers when to keep backups.

Reaching a threshold is a good sign — it means the business is using materials at a scale where the buying system matters. The goal is not to be "a wholesale buyer" in general, but to buy each material in the way its volume justifies. For the full sequence from 100 to 1,000 candles a month, see I'm Growing from 100 to 1,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Raw-Material Purchasing Strategy Change at Each Stage?; for what 1,000 candles a month needs line by line, I'm Making 1,000 Candles a Month — Which Raw Materials Should Now be Purchased Wholesale Rather than in Small Packs?; and for scaling beyond that, I Want to Scale a Candle Business from 100 to 10,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick, Jar and Packaging Purchasing Quantities Change as Production Grows?.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would suit us to say that every growing maker should move to quoted wholesale buying at a single, early volume. The honest position is narrower: most of our listed prices are already flat per unit above the smallest pack, so a quote only matters where your volume is genuinely large — usually wax and jars first, a leading scent next, wicks much later.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 and White Matte Glass Jar figures are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026, with the 1,000-pack and Salsa jar figures from CSI listings pulled 24–25 September 2026. Thresholds, per-candle lines and scenario quantities are arithmetic on those prices and a 200 g candle at 8%.

The five-packs-a-month rule, the 100-jar handling threshold, the six-scent split and the hypothetical 5% quote are working assumptions for illustration; CSI publishes no volume discount. For quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

When should a candle business start buying wholesale?
Material by material. On a working rule of five of the largest listed pack a month: wax at about 272 candles a month (10 kg bags), a single scent at about 312 candles of it (1 kg packs), jars at 100–500 depending on the jar, wicks at about 5,000.
How much wax does a candle business use per month?
About 184 g per 200 g candle at an 8% load: 18.4 kg for 100 candles, 92 kg for 500 and 184 kg for 1,000. Add a 3–5% working allowance for pour loss and test burns.
Is wholesale candle wax cheaper than retail packs?
Only a quote can say. CSI's listed wax is flat per kilo above 1 kg for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 464; Natural Soy Pearl drops 5.6% at 5 kg and is listed to 50 kg. Volumes beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
What is the largest pack of fragrance oil CSI sells?
1 kg per oil on the listed packs. For several kilos of one oil, ask for a quote on WhatsApp. For 24 oils the 1 kg is already 5% or more cheaper per gram than the 100 g; for most others it is within 1%.
Should I buy all my candle supplies wholesale once I grow?
No — only the materials whose monthly use has crossed their threshold. Most businesses move wax and jars first, a leading scent next, and wicks last. Everything else stays on listed packs, which are already flat-priced for most lines.
How do I ask a supplier for a wholesale quote?
Give the material, three months of monthly use, the delivery rhythm you want and your pin code, then compare the quote with the listed per-unit rate at the largest pack, landed and after holding cost.
