I Want to Scale to 2,000 Candles a Month — Which Raw Materials Should Move From Retail Packs to Wholesale Purchasing First?
शेयर करना
Does CSI 464 get cheaper in bigger packs? No. It is ₹0.5074 per gram at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; ask, but plan on listed prices.
Should all fragrance oils move to 1 kg? Only validated ones. Rose saves ₹0.354 per gram at 1 kg versus 100 g, while Woody Oud saves nothing because both packs cost the same per gram.
How much wax do 2,000 candles need? At 200 g and 8%, 368 kg a month, which costs ₹186,723.20 at listed CSI 464 prices.
Rank materials by rupees saved, not by kilograms bought
Scaling to 2,000 candles a month changes what is worth your attention. A saving of one rupee per candle is now ₹2,000 a month. But makers often start their wholesale move with wax, simply because wax is the heaviest thing they buy. Weight is the wrong guide. What matters is how much the per-unit price drops between the pack you buy today and the largest pack listed, multiplied by how many units you use.
The worked example is 2,000 candles of 200 g a month at 8% of total candle weight, split evenly across four validated fragrances: British Rose, Lavender, Woody Oud and Roasted Coffee. That is 500 candles per fragrance, 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax per candle. Per month that comes to 8 kg of each oil and 368 kg of wax.
Where retail packs are costing you money
The table compares each material's smallest commonly bought pack with its largest listed pack, per unit, and multiplies the difference by this example's monthly use. Lines that do not apply to your product are still worth reading, because they show where moving up a pack size buys you nothing.
| Material | Retail pack per unit | Largest listed pack per unit | Difference | Monthly use | Monthly saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Wooden Wicks (if used) | ₹59.00 (pack of 10) | ₹41.30 (pack of 100) | ₹17.70 | 2,000 wicks | ₹35,400.00 |
| Clear 200 ml salsa jar (if used) | ₹40.12 (5 pcs ₹200.60) | ₹29.50 (100 pcs) | ₹10.62 | 2,000 jars | ₹21,240.00 |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax (if used) | ₹0.450 per g (1 kg) | ₹0.4248 per g (10 kg or 50 kg) | ₹0.0252 per g | 368 kg | ₹9,273.60 |
| CSI 468 (if used) | ₹0.650 per g (1 kg) | ₹0.637 per g (5 kg or 10 kg) | ₹0.013 per g | 368 kg | ₹4,784.00 |
| British Rose | ₹3.422 per g (100 g) | ₹3.068 per g (1 kg) | ₹0.354 per g | 8 kg | ₹2,832.00 |
| Lavender | ₹5.400 per g (100 g) | ₹5.221 per g (1 kg) | ₹0.179 per g | 8 kg | ₹1,432.00 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹3.900 per g (100 g) | ₹3.738 per g (1 kg) | ₹0.162 per g | 8 kg | ₹1,296.00 |
| Woody Oud | ₹4.5312 per g (100 g) | ₹4.5312 per g (1 kg) | None | 8 kg | ₹0.00 |
| CSI 464, matte jars, Eco C1/C2, ready-made wicks | Flat | Flat | None | – | ₹0.00 |
Two lessons stand out. First, vessels and wooden wicks, which makers rarely think of as wholesale lines, carry the largest per-unit steps. If your 2,000 candles use salsa jars or wooden wicks and you are still buying small packs, that is where your money is leaking. Second, for this example's oils the saving from moving 100 g packs to 1 kg is real but modest, and for Woody Oud there is none at all, because its 100 g and 1 kg packs cost the same per gram.
The order to move materials to wholesale
Based on the table, here is a sequence that puts the biggest certain savings first. Adapt it to the materials your own candles actually use.
What 368 kg of wax a month really means
At listed prices, 368 kg of CSI 464 is 36 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg, costing 36 × ₹5,074.00 + ₹2,537.00 + 3 × ₹507.40 = ₹182,664.00 + ₹2,537.00 + ₹1,522.20 = ₹186,723.20. Per candle that is 184 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36 whichever bag it came from.
The practical issues at this volume are storage and handling rather than price. Thirty-seven bags a month need dry, cool shelving away from heat. CSI 464 states a 60-month shelf life under those conditions, so holding two or three weeks of wax ahead of production is not a quality risk. Melting is the other constraint: the Electric Wax Melter (Imported) page states it melts 9.5 litres of wax at a time, so 368 kg is many melts a month. Plan the melting schedule as carefully as the purchase, and never run a large melter at its maximum setting while adding fragrance.
Cash, risk and the monthly rhythm
Bigger packs move money from your bank into your store room. At 2,000 candles that is substantial: the four oils alone at 1 kg pricing cost 8 × (₹3,068.00 + ₹5,221.00 + ₹4,531.20 + ₹3,738.00) = 8 × ₹16,558.20 = ₹132,465.60 a month. If cash is tight, move the high-saving lines first (vessels and wooden wicks), keep buying wax in whatever bag size you can store, and phase oils into 1 kg as each one proves itself in sales.
| Material | Keep in small packs while | Move to largest listed pack when |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oil | The scent is still being tested or sales are uncertain | It has passed in your jar and sells at least 1 kg a month |
| Salsa or mini jars | You are still choosing the vessel | The jar is validated with its wick and fill weight |
| Wooden wicks | You are still comparing wick types | They passed every fragrance you will use them with |
| CSI 464, matte jars, Eco wicks | Always fine; price is flat | Whenever storage and cash allow |
| New wax trial | Always, in 1 kg | Never before it passes full burn tests |
Review the split every month for the first quarter at this volume. Sales rarely stay even across four fragrances, and a scent that drops to 300 candles a month needs 4.8 kg rather than 8 kg (300 × 16 g). Re-deriving each oil's monthly grams from actual sales, not from the original plan, keeps the 1 kg packs moving and stops slow sellers from building a shelf of opened bottles. Note the batch on every pack you open so that, if a candle ever behaves differently, you can trace which delivery it came from.
The honest answer to this page's question is that at 2,000 a month, wax is the biggest purchase but not the biggest opportunity. Look at the vessel and the wick first, then the oils, and treat wax as a storage plan and a quote request.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
