You do not need a stockroom to find out whether you can make a good candle. You need three small bottles of fragrance, one small bag of wax, a handful of wicks and containers, and a scale. This page prices the smallest version that still tells you something useful.
₹933.88
consumables for six 85 g test candles in three scents · add ₹708.00 for a scale and thermometer you keep · CSI pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What is the smallest quantity to start making candles? Three 15 g fragrance oils (₹254.88), 500 g of CSI 464 wax (₹260.00), twelve 85 g golden tins (₹360.00) and ten wicks (₹59.00): ₹933.88. It makes six test candles, two per scent.

Do I need equipment for a small test? Two tools you cannot skip: a scale (₹354.00) and a pen thermometer (₹354.00). They are bought once and carry into production. A pan and a steel jug from your kitchen can do the rest at this size.

Is testing in small tins good enough? For learning to pour and comparing scents, yes. For deciding wick and load in the jar you will sell, no. That needs Kit B: the same three testers in 200 g White Matte jars, ₹1,175.28 in consumables.

How many candles does 15 g of fragrance oil make? At 8%: two 85 g tins (6.8 g each), three 50 g candles (4 g each), or, at 7.5%, one 200 g candle. See the quantity maths.
The short answer
Kit A: 3 × 15 g testers ₹254.88 · CSI 464 500 g ₹260.00 · 12 golden tins ₹360.00 · 10 Eco wicks ₹59.00 = ₹933.88; 6 tins at 8%.
Kit B: 3 × 15 g testers · CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 · 5 White Matte jars ₹354.00 · 10 wicks = ₹1,175.28; 3 × 200 g at 7.5%.
Tools: Scale ₹354.00 + pen thermometer ₹354.00 minimum; pouring jug ₹531.00 recommended for 200 g pours. The minimum setup for a real business test goes further.

Wick sizing is not published — both kits leave spare wicks for a re-pour.
Both kits use the same three 15 g testers and the same ten wicks. Kit A pours small 85 g tins, so one 500 g bag of wax is enough and the whole test costs under ₹1,000 in consumables. Kit B pours the full 200 g candle in the jar you plan to sell, which needs a 1 kg bag and dearer jars but answers the question that actually matters for a business: does this wick and this load work in this jar.
Straight answer
I want to start making candles from home but don't want a huge inventory. What is the smallest practical quantity of wax, fragrance oil, wicks and jars to begin testing?
The smallest practical test is three 15 g fragrance oils, 500 g of soy wax, twelve small tins and ten wicks: ₹933.88 at CSI's listed prices. Use Peach Melon Berry (₹81.42), Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹68.44) and Gardenia (₹105.02), 500 g of CSI 464 (₹260.00), a pack of twelve golden 85 g tins (₹360.00) and ten Eco Thin C1 wicks (₹59.00). At an 8% load, each 15 g tester fills two 85 g tins, so you pour six candles and use 469.2 g of the 500 g wax. Add a scale and a pen thermometer (₹708.00), which you keep. That kit teaches you to pour and compare scents. If you already know the jar you want to sell in, test in that jar instead: the same testers in three 200 g White Matte jars, with 1 kg of wax, cost ₹1,175.28 in consumables, and that result predicts your real candle. Nothing smaller than this is worth buying, and nothing bigger is needed until a scent has passed.
One line: under ₹1,000 of consumables to learn; about ₹1,200 to test the actual product.
The three testers in this plan cost ₹254.88 together: Peach Melon Berry 15 g ₹81.42, Eucalyptus Spearmint 15 g ₹68.44 (the cheapest 15 g in the collection) and Gardenia 15 g ₹105.02. Fruity, fresh and floral, so the comparison teaches you something.

The smallest pack of everything

Every candle material has a smallest listed pack. Your minimum test is simply those packs, matched so that none of them runs out first.

The mistake most home makers make is not buying too little. It is buying a kit sized by someone else's idea of a starter, then finding that the wax runs out before the fragrance, or that there are thirty jars and enough oil for four candles. The fix is to start from the smallest pack of each material and work out how many candles each one supports. The smallest packs on CSI's listings are below.

Smallest listed pack sizes · CSI, September 2026
The minimum you can buy of each material, and what it makes

Fragrance oil 15 g (51 oils); 50 g or 100 g for the rest ₹68.44 – ₹199.00 at 15 g One 200 g candle at 7.5%, or two 85 g tins at 8%
CSI 464 soy wax 500 g ₹260.00 Six 85 g tins, or two 200 g candles
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 500 g ₹299.00 Same, rated up to 13% load
Natural Soy Pearl Wax 1 kg ₹450.00 Smallest pack is 1 kg
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 10 ₹59.00 Ten test candles, or five with a re-pour each
Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill 12 ₹360.00 Twelve small test candles, ₹30.00 each
Heart Cutout Velvet Jar, 50 g wax 1 ₹45.00 Buy exactly as many as you need
White Matte Glass Jar 5 ₹354.00 Five full-size candles, ₹70.80 each

Fifty-one oils in the Fragrance Oils collection come in an in-stock 15 g, from ₹68.44 to ₹199.00. That is the de facto sample size. CSI does not sell a fragrance sample pack, discovery set or trial kit, so a test set is simply three or four of these 15 g bottles chosen by you. Oils that start at 50 g, which includes many of the inspired-by profiles, have no smaller option; their 50 g is their tester. Wax is the other constraint. The 500 g packs of CSI 464 (₹260.00) and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹299.00) are the smallest bags of container wax. Natural Soy Pearl starts at 1 kg.

Oil and wax: CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Wicks, White Matte jars, the scale and thermometer are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. The golden tins, heart jars, jug and wick stickers come from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. The CSI candle-making kits exist too, from ₹555.78, but their fragrance contents are not published in this data, so this page builds the test from separate items you can see and cost.

Kit A: six tins, three scents

Kit A is the cheapest test that is still a real test. It uses Golden Aluminium Tins, which are one of the few containers in CSI's range with a published fill weight: 85 g. That matters, because it lets you do the maths before you pour instead of guessing. An 85 g candle at an 8% load holds 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. One 15 g tester fills two tins with 1.4 g left over. Three testers fill six tins, which need 469.2 g of wax, and the 500 g bag covers it with 30.8 g to spare.

The six spare tins are not waste. Tins come only in twelves, and the second six are the re-pour for any scent whose first two tins disappoint, or the start of a second round with new testers. The four spare wicks do the same job. Wick sizing for a given container diameter is not published in this data, so the first pour may need a second try. Pour loss at this scale is real but tiny; the 30.8 g of spare wax is about 6.6%, which sits just above the 3–5% working assumption used across this series.

Per test tin · 85 g · 8% · CSI 464 · Eco Thin C1
What each tin costs
Scent Oil (6.8 g at 15 g rate) Wax (78.2 g) Tin + wick Per tin
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹31.03 ₹40.66 ₹35.90 ₹107.59
Peach Melon Berry ₹36.91 ₹40.66 ₹35.90 ₹113.47
Gardenia ₹47.61 ₹40.66 ₹35.90 ₹124.17

Each tin costs under ₹130 in materials, even with oil at its tester price. The costs are useful for comparing scents, not for pricing a product: 15 g oil is the dearest way to buy fragrance by the gram, and the tin is not necessarily what you will sell. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

What Kit A cannot tell you. A small tin burns differently from a 200 g jar. The melt pool is smaller, the wick is different, and a scent that fills a room from a tin may do something else in a wider jar. Kit A tells you whether you can pour cleanly, which scents you like, and roughly how strong each one is. It does not tell you the wick and load for the candle you want to sell. That is Kit B's job.

Kit B: the candle you will sell

The smallest test that predicts your real product is one candle per scent, in the real jar, at the real size.

If you already know the container you want, skip Kit A and test there. Kit B uses the same three testers in White Matte Glass Jars, the 200 g container used as the default across this series. Each 15 g tester fills one 200 g candle at 7.5%: 15 g of oil and 185 g of wax. Three candles need 555 g of wax, which is more than a 500 g bag. The cheapest way to cover it is the 1 kg of CSI 464 at ₹507.40, which costs less than two 500 g bags (₹520.00).

Kit B · CSI prices, September 2026

Consumables ₹1,175.28
Scale + thermometer + pouring jug Buy once ₹1,239.00 Kept
Kit B total ₹2,414.28

Kit B adds the ₹531.00 pouring jug because a clean 200 g pour from a kitchen pan is harder than an 85 g one, and wax on the counter is wax you paid for. It leaves 445 g of wax, enough for two more 200 g candles at 7.5%, which is exactly what you want when the first wick choice turns out wrong. The per-candle cost is ₹239.01 for Eucalyptus Spearmint, ₹251.99 for Peach Melon Berry and ₹275.59 for Gardenia, all with oil at the tester price. Whether to test several jars or standardise one covers the case where you have not yet chosen the container.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell 5 kg and 10 kg bags of the same wax at exactly the same price per kilo, and it would be easy to suggest you "save a reorder" by buying one now. Do not. Until a scent and a wick have passed in your jar, a 5 kg bag is ₹2,537.00 committed to a candle you have not made yet. The 500 g or 1 kg bag is the right purchase for a test.

The quantity maths

All the quantities on this page come from one formula. For a finished candle weight W at a load L, oil = W × L and wax = W − oil. Load is a percentage of the finished candle, not of the wax. The table runs the formula for the container sizes a home test might use. The 85 g and 50 g fills are published by CSI; the 200 g is this series' default for the White Matte jar.

Oil = W × L · wax = W − oil
How far one 15 g tester goes
Container Candle weight Load Oil per candle Wax per candle Candles from 15 g
Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 50 g 8% 4.0 g 46.0 g 3 (3 g spare)
Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g 8% 6.8 g 78.2 g 2 (1.4 g spare)
White Matte Glass Jar 200 g 7.5% 15.0 g 185.0 g 1
White Matte Glass Jar 200 g 8% 16.0 g 184.0 g 0 — needs 1 g more

Two practical points follow. First, a 15 g tester cannot make a 200 g candle at 8%; it is 1 g short, which is why the full-size test runs at 7.5%. If you want to test at 8% or 10% in a 200 g jar, buy a 50 g of the scent instead. Second, the 50 g heart jar stretches a tester furthest, three candles per bottle, which suits a scent comparison where you want to burn one, give one away and keep one for a week-later sniff. Load ceilings are the wax maker's stated maximums: up to 10% for CSI 464 and up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. They are formulation limits, not regulatory ones.

1
Weigh the empty container, then the waxSet the scale to zero with the jug on it, and weigh wax to the gram. For an 85 g tin that is 78.2 g; round to 78 g and note it.
2
Melt and check the temperatureMelt in a double boiler and use the pen thermometer. Follow the wax's product page for the fragrance-addition and pour temperatures; they are not reproduced here.
3
Weigh the oil separately and add it6.8 g per tin, 15 g per 200 g jar at 7.5%. Stir for a full two minutes so the oil is evenly through the wax.
4
Set the wick centred and pourFix the wick with a dab of melted wax; wick stickers (40 for ₹100.00) are optional at this size. Pour slowly, and write the scent, load and date on the base.
5
Cure, then burn one at a timeCure time is not published for this wax, so allow about a week as a working assumption. Burn long enough for the pool to reach the edge. Note the pool, the flame, soot and how far the scent carries.

What the leftovers become

A good minimum test leaves a little of everything, and each leftover has a job. Kit A leaves 30.8 g of wax, 4.2 g of oil across the three bottles, six tins and four wicks. Kit B leaves 445 g of wax, two jars and seven wicks. None of this is dead stock. The wax and wicks carry straight into the next round or into production, because they are shared by every scent. The spare containers are the re-pour for any test that fails on the wick. The few grams of oil left in each tester are best used as a top-up on a sunken candle, not saved.

What should not be left over is a fragrance you bought in quantity before testing. That is the only leftover in candle-making that genuinely loses value, because it cannot be used in any other candle. It is why the minimum test buys 15 g, and why launching five scents on ₹20,000 and buying ten fragrances in trial vs bulk quantities both treat fragrance as the one material to buy scent by scent.

The CSI principle
Buy the smallest pack of everything, and make them run out together.
A minimum test is not the cheapest items; it is the smallest packs matched so that the wax, oil, wicks and containers all support the same number of candles. Nothing runs out first, nothing is left stranded, and every rupee is poured.

When the test is done, the next step is a small first batch, not a big one. The ₹10,000 starting plan and the minimum setup for testing a candle business properly take it from here, and a lean inventory for the first three months keeps the same discipline once you are selling. When you are ready for a full run, the exact list for 100 candles and what a ₹25,000 start buys first show the next scale up.

Three 15 g bottles and a 500 g bag will tell you more than a shelf of stock you have not burned.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A page about starting small is not where a supplier makes its money, and we would rather you bought three 15 g bottles and came back than bought a kilo and stopped. That is why this page tells you not to buy our larger wax bags until a test has passed.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco wicks, White Matte jars, scale and thermometer are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. Golden tins, heart jars, the pouring jug and wick stickers are from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. The 85 g and 50 g fill weights are the ones published on those listings; all other quantities are arithmetic on them.

The 8% and 7.5% loads, the one-week cure and the 3–5% pour-loss allowance are working assumptions. Wick sizing for container diameters is not published here; a burn test decides it. For help building a test order, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much wax do I need to make my first candle?
Weigh by container. An 85 g tin at 8% needs 78.2 g of wax and a 200 g jar at 7.5% needs 185 g. The smallest bag of CSI 464 is 500 g at ₹260.00, enough for six 85 g tins or two 200 g candles.
Do I need a starter kit to make candles at home?
No. A test built from separate items costs ₹933.88 in consumables and lets you choose each scent. CSI's candle-making kits exist, from ₹555.78, but their fragrance contents are not published here, so check the product page before buying one for a scent test.
Does CSI sell a fragrance sample pack?
No. CSI does not list a sample pack or discovery set. Build your own from 15 g bottles, which 51 oils offer, starting at ₹68.44. Ask on WhatsApp if you want help choosing a set.
How many wicks should I buy for testing candles?
Ten Eco Thin C1 wicks (₹59.00) for a three-scent test. That covers six tins or three jars with spares, because wick sizing is not published per container and the first choice may need a re-pour.
Can I test candles in small tins and then sell in bigger jars?
You can compare scents in tins, but not settle the wick or load for a bigger jar. A 200 g jar burns differently. Test the final candle in the final jar before producing it; Kit B does that for ₹1,175.28 in consumables.
What is the cheapest fragrance oil to practise candle making with?
By 15 g price, Eucalyptus Spearmint at ₹68.44, then Citrus Lemon and Peach Melon Berry at ₹81.42 each. Choose practice scents you might actually sell, so the test is not wasted if one passes.
Start small, properly

Non-price figures and assumptions: Fill weights: Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g and Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 50 g as published on their listings; White Matte Glass Jar 200 g as this series' default. Loads: 8% for tins and heart jars, 7.5% for the 200 g test from a 15 g tester. Oil = candle weight × load; wax = candle weight − oil. Cure time of about a week and 3–5% pour loss are working assumptions. Per-tin and per-candle costs are wax + oil + wick + container at the prices shown and exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
