I Want to Start With Three 200 g Candle Fragrances and Make 50 Units of Each — How Much Wax, Fragrance, Jars and Wicks Should I Purchase Initially?
शेयर करना
How much of each fragrance oil? 800 g of Woody Oud, 1,000 g of Citrus Lemon and 800 g of British Rose for production, after a 100 g test bottle of each.
How many jars and wicks? 150 jars and 150 wicks for production plus the test set. Salsa jars cost ₹29.50 each in packs of 50 or 100, and Eco wicks cost the same per wick at every pack.
Why not use the same load for all three? Citrus top notes fade faster, and the Citrus Lemon page advises the upper end of the range. Each oil should earn its own load in testing.
Three fragrances means three small briefs
Your launch is 150 candles: 50 of each of three scents, all 200 g, all in the same jar. It is tempting to multiply one recipe by 150 and order. That works only if the three oils behave identically in wax, and they rarely do. A citrus may need a higher load to stay noticeable. A woody oil may need a different wick from a floral at the same percentage. The jar and the wax can be shared; the oil quantity and the wick count cannot be assumed.
For this worked example the three fragrances are Woody Oud, Citrus Lemon and British Rose, poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 in the clear 200 ml salsa jar with a golden lug cap. Swap in your own oils and the method is unchanged.
Set a starting load for each oil first
This series calculates load as a percentage of total candle weight. Product pages quote ranges against wax weight, so treat the figures below as suggested starting points that sit inside each oil's stated load range on the product page.
Woody Oud at 8%. Its page states 6 to 10% in soy with a 48 to 72 hour cure. At 8% the candle is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil.
Citrus Lemon at 10%. Its page advises that citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families, and recommends the upper end of the range with the full cure. At 10% the candle is 180 g of wax and 20 g of oil.
British Rose at 8%. The page states up to 10% in soy, a 192°C flashpoint and 0% vanillin. At 8% it matches the oud: 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil.
| Fragrance | Per candle | Production wax (50) | Test wax (3) | Production oil (50) | Test oil (3) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud 8% | 184 g + 16 g | 9,200 g | 552 g | 800 g | 48 g |
| Citrus Lemon 10% | 180 g + 20 g | 9,000 g | 540 g | 1,000 g | 60 g |
| British Rose 8% | 184 g + 16 g | 9,200 g | 552 g | 800 g | 48 g |
| Total | 27,400 g | 1,644 g | 2,600 g | 156 g |
Three test candles per oil is a suggested starting point: one with Eco C1, one with Eco C2, and one spare for a second round with whichever wick looked closer. Add the wax columns and you need 29,044 g in all.
Converting grams into real CSI pack sizes
Wax
CSI 464 costs the same per kg in every pack, so the order can be split without penalty. Buy a 5 kg bag at ₹2,537.00 for the nine test candles, which use 1,644 g and leave 3,356 g. Production then needs 27,400 − 3,356 = 24,044 g more, covered by two 10 kg packs and one 5 kg pack at 2 × ₹5,074.00 + ₹2,537.00 = ₹12,685.00. Thirty kilograms bought, 29,044 g used, 956 g left, which is five spare candles at 184 g.
Fragrance oil
After testing, each 100 g bottle holds what the tests did not use: 52 g of Woody Oud, 40 g of Citrus Lemon and 52 g of British Rose. The production top-up is where pack prices matter, and each oil behaves differently.
Woody Oud. You need 800 g and hold 52 g, so buy at least 748 g. A 500 g bottle plus three 100 g bottles gives exactly 800 g for ₹2,265.60 + 3 × ₹453.12 = ₹3,624.96. Every Woody Oud pack works out at ₹4.5312 per gram, so the 1 kg bottle at ₹4,531.20 is not cheaper per gram; it simply gives you 200 g more at the same rate.
Citrus Lemon. You need 1,000 g and hold 40 g. The 1 kg bottle at ₹2,832.00 covers it with 40 g to spare.
British Rose. You need at least 748 g more. A 500 g bottle plus three 100 g bottles costs ₹1,593.00 + 3 × ₹342.20 = ₹2,619.60 and leaves 52 g. The 1 kg bottle at ₹3,068.00 costs ₹3,068.00 − ₹2,619.60 = ₹448.40 more but gives 200 g extra, which is ₹448.40 ÷ 200 = ₹2.242 per gram for that extra oil. If rose is likely to be reordered, the 1 kg bottle is the better buy; if it is the scent you are least sure of, the smaller combination keeps cash free.
Jars
The clear salsa jar costs ₹1,475.00 for 50 or ₹2,950.00 for 100, which is ₹29.50 each either way, while the 5-piece pack is ₹200.60, or ₹40.12 each. Buy the 50-pack for testing; the nine tests use nine jars and leave 41. Production needs 150 − 41 = 109 more. A 100-pack plus two 5-packs, at ₹2,950.00 + 2 × ₹200.60 = ₹3,351.20, gives 151 jars with one spare. Before you order them, fill one test jar to your chosen line and weigh it, because a 200 ml label describes volume, not the weight of set wax.
Wicks
The test set needs five C1 and four C2 wicks across the nine candles, so buy 20 C1 at ₹118.00 and 10 C2 at ₹94.40. Suppose your burn tests approve C1 for oud and rose and C2 for the lemon; that is an illustration, not a prediction, since CSI publishes no sizing chart. Production then needs 100 C1 less the 15 left, so 85, and 50 C2 less the 6 left, so 44. Eco wicks cost ₹5.90 or ₹9.44 each in every pack, so buy close to the exact count: 50 + 20 + 20 C1 for ₹295.00 + ₹118.00 + ₹118.00 = ₹531.00, and a 50-pack of C2 for ₹472.00. Wick stickers for 159 wicks need four sheets of 40: one now and three later at ₹100.00 each.
What each fragrance costs per candle
| Line | Woody Oud 8% | Citrus Lemon 10% | British Rose 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax at ₹0.5074 per g | 184 g = ₹93.36 | 180 g = ₹91.33 | 184 g = ₹93.36 |
| Oil | 16 × ₹4.5312 = ₹72.50 | 20 × ₹2.832 = ₹56.64 | 16 × ₹3.068 = ₹49.09 |
| Salsa jar | ₹29.50 | ₹29.50 | ₹29.50 |
| Wick (illustrative) | C1 ₹5.90 | C2 ₹9.44 | C1 ₹5.90 |
| Materials total | ₹201.26 | ₹186.91 | ₹177.85 |
The lemon costs more in oil grams but less in oil rupees, because its 1 kg rate is lower. Packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST are not included in any of the three.
If testing moves a load
Recalculate before you order, not after. Suppose the oud tests better at 9%: each candle becomes 182 g of wax and 18 g of oil, so 50 candles need 900 g of oil. With 52 g in hand you must buy at least 848 g, and now the 1 kg bottle at ₹4,531.20 is the right purchase rather than the 800 g combination. The wax requirement falls by 50 × 2 g = 100 g, which simply adds to your spare. One changed percentage alters a pack choice, which is exactly why the production order waits for the test results.
Buy this to test, buy this once validated
Test first: CSI 464 5 kg ₹2,537.00; Woody Oud 100 g ₹453.12, Citrus Lemon 100 g ₹300.00 and British Rose 100 g ₹342.20; salsa jars 50-pack ₹1,475.00; Eco C1 20 ₹118.00; Eco C2 10 ₹94.40; one sheet of wick stickers ₹100.00. Total ₹5,419.72, assuming you already own a scale, thermometer and pouring pitcher.
Once validated: CSI 464 25 kg ₹12,685.00; Woody Oud 800 g ₹3,624.96; Citrus Lemon 1 kg ₹2,832.00; British Rose 800 g ₹2,619.60; jars ₹3,351.20; C1 ₹531.00; C2 ₹472.00; three sheets of stickers ₹300.00. Total ₹26,415.76, making ₹31,835.48 for the whole launch before your own packaging.
What remains after 150 candles: 956 g of wax, 52 g of oud, 40 g of lemon, 52 g of rose, one jar, five C1 and six C2 wicks. That is a small, deliberate buffer, not a pile of stock waiting for a fourth fragrance you have not designed. Keep every safety habit from testing into production: add each oil below its published flashpoint, verify temperature with a thermometer, and never leave a burning test candle unattended.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
