I'm Comparing a ₹499, ₹799 and ₹1,199 Candle — How Does Jar Size Affect Raw-Material Cost, Shipping Weight and Achievable Margin?
शेयर करना
How does it affect shipping weight? Glass and packaging often outweigh the candle. Packed weights (example) are 540 g, 680 g and 1,140 g; on example slabs the first two ship at ₹75.00 and the largest at ₹100.00. See weight.
Which tier earns the best margin? In this build, the ₹499 keeps the highest share (58.6%) and the ₹799 the most rupees (₹445.25). The ₹1,199, with a premium oil in a 400 g jar, keeps only ₹430.21 (35.9%).
How do I fix a weak top tier? Change one of four things: the oil, the size, the price or the jar. At ₹1,499 the same 400 g Santal Noir candle keeps 48.3%; at ₹1,199 with Bergamot Amber it keeps 45.5%. Four fixes.
Three tiers, costed
Each tier is a container candle at an 8% load in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, which the wax maker rates up to 13%. The ₹499 tier fills a 200 ml Salsa jar to an illustrative 160 g; the jar comes with its golden lug cap, ₹29.50 in packs of 100. The ₹799 tier is the series' 200 g White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80, with an example lid because none is listed. The ₹1,199 tier is a 400 g candle; CSI lists no jar of that size with a published fill, so the jar and lid are example figures, and two Eco Thin C1 wicks stand in for whatever a burn test decides.
| ₹499 · 160 g | ₹799 · 200 g | ₹1,199 · 400 g | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil | British Rose ₹43.80 | Bergamot Amber ₹89.60 | Santal Noir ₹294.08 |
| Wax | ₹88.17 | ₹110.22 | ₹220.43 |
| Wick(s) | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | ₹11.80 (2 — burn test) |
| Jar | ₹29.50 (Salsa, 100-pack) | ₹70.80 (White Matte) | ₹120.00 (example) |
| Lid | ₹0.00 (cap included) | ₹18.00 (example) | ₹25.00 (example) |
| Materials | ₹167.37 | ₹294.52 | ₹671.31 |
| Materials as a share of price | 33.5% | 36.9% | 56.0% |
| Price per gram of candle | ₹3.12 | ₹4.00 | ₹3.00 |
| Materials per gram of candle | ₹1.05 | ₹1.47 | ₹1.68 |
Read the last two rows together. Price per gram of candle runs ₹3.12, ₹4.00 and ₹3.00: the biggest candle charges the least per gram of the three, which is how customers expect a large size to work. Materials per gram do not fall with it: they rise from ₹1.05 to ₹1.68, because each tier also steps up the oil. At ₹1,199 the oil alone is ₹294.08, more than the whole ₹499 candle's materials. The gap between price per gram and materials per gram is the margin, and it narrows sharply at the top.
Shipping weight by jar size
The customer pays for the candle; the courier charges for the parcel. CSI does not publish glass weights for its jars, so the figures below are examples — weigh an empty jar and a packed parcel of your own. The courier slabs are also examples: up to 500 g, up to 1 kg, then each extra 500 g.
| Tier | Wax + oil | Glass (example) | Packaging (example) | Packed weight | Courier (example) | Courier as share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹499 | 160 g | 230 g | 150 g | 540 g | ₹75.00 | 15.0% |
| ₹799 | 200 g | 300 g | 180 g | 680 g | ₹75.00 | 9.4% |
| ₹1,199 | 400 g | 480 g | 260 g | 1,140 g | ₹100.00 | 8.3% |
In every tier the candle is less than half the parcel. The ₹499 and ₹799 parcels land in the same example slab, so the courier is the same ₹75.00 whether the customer paid ₹499 or ₹799 — 15.0% of the smaller price against 9.4% of the larger. The ₹1,199 parcel crosses 1 kg and moves up a slab. Weight is also why the ₹499 parcel is worth trimming: at 540 g it sits just over the 500 g example edge. The free-shipping post works through what that edge is worth.
Margin in rupees and per cent
| ₹499 | ₹799 | ₹1,199 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Materials | ₹167.37 | ₹294.52 | ₹671.31 |
| Label, box, tissue (example) | ₹29.25 | ₹43.25 | ₹73.50 |
| Gateway fee (example 2%) | ₹9.98 | ₹15.98 | ₹23.98 |
| Left before courier | ₹292.40 | ₹445.25 | ₹430.21 |
| Gross margin on price | 58.6% | 55.7% | 35.9% |
| Markup on cost | 141.5% | 125.9% | 56.0% |
| If you absorb courier (example) | ₹217.40 | ₹370.25 | ₹330.21 |
| Share of price after courier | 43.6% | 46.3% | 27.5% |
The ₹799 tier is the strongest in rupees, keeping ₹445.25 before courier. The ₹499 keeps the highest share of its price, 58.6%, because British Rose is cheap and the Salsa jar brings its own lid. The ₹1,199 is the weakest on both measures: it keeps less in rupees than the ₹799 despite costing the customer ₹400 more. None of this is visible from the prices alone, and all of it is visible once each tier is costed from its recipe.
Fixing a weak top tier
There are four levers: a cheaper oil, a smaller fill, a higher price, or a cheaper jar and box. Here are three of them applied to the ₹1,199 candle, with everything else unchanged. The jar, lid, box and weights for the alternatives are examples like the original.
| Version | Materials | Left before courier | Margin | Packed weight | Left after courier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| As built: ₹1,199 · Santal Noir at 400 g | ₹671.31 | ₹430.21 | 35.9% | 1,140 g | ₹330.21 |
| ₹1,199 · Bergamot Amber at 400 g | ₹556.43 | ₹545.09 | 45.5% | 1,140 g | ₹445.09 |
| ₹1,199 · Santal Noir at 300 g | ₹506.78 | ₹604.74 | 50.4% | 900 g | ₹529.74 |
| ₹1,499 · Santal Noir at 400 g | ₹671.31 | ₹724.21 | 48.3% | 1,140 g | ₹624.21 |
Keeping the 400 g size but using the ₹799 tier's Bergamot Amber lifts the margin to 45.5%. Keeping Santal Noir but shrinking to 300 g lifts it to 50.4% and drops the parcel under 1 kg. Keeping both and pricing at ₹1,499 lifts it to 48.3%. Which is right depends on what the top tier is for. If its job is "more candle", use the house oil. If its job is "a better scent", keep the premium oil in a standard size. If it must be both, it belongs at ₹1,499 — the ₹1,499 allocation post shows how to split that price.
Building a tier ladder that works
A ladder that works usually has the middle tier as its engine, because it balances price and cost best, with the entry tier bringing customers in and the top tier lifting average order value. The target-pricing post shows how to design all three from the prices down rather than from the jars up, and the affordable-candle post tests the entry tier on its own.
One oil per tier
The three oils below map to the three tiers by price per gram. Each pick table shows candles per pack at that tier's fill.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A 400 g premium candle sells more wax and fragrance than any other tier, and it would suit us to present it as the natural top of every range. On the worked numbers it earns the least of the three at ₹1,199, and this page says so and shows how to fix it.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; Salsa jar and tissue prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series. Margins, weights and per-gram figures are plain arithmetic on those prices and the labelled examples, shown to two decimals.
The 400 g and 300 g jars, all lids except the Salsa's included cap, labels, boxes, glass and packaging weights, courier slabs and the gateway rate are examples only, not CSI figures or market rates. The Salsa jar's 160 g fill is illustrative. Wick counts for large jars are placeholders for a burn test. For a three-tier materials quote, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
