CSI commercial fragrance guides · Buyer questions
You don't need a different oil for a three-wick candle. You need three times the grams, three wicks and a proper burn test.

Buyer question · Large three-wick candles
Makers moving up from 200 g jars to big three-wick candles often assume they need "stronger" oils. Generally, they don't. The load is a percentage, so the same oil at the same load gives the wax the same concentration. What changes is how much oil each candle eats, how many wicks you buy, how the pool forms, and what the candle costs.

Woody Oud inside one illustrative 600 g three-wick candle at 8% (48 g at the 100 g rate) — three times a 200 g candle · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Do three-wick candles need different fragrance oils? Generally no. The same oils work; test each one in the large format. Load is a percentage, so 8% in a 600 g candle is the same concentration as 8% in a 200 g one — it is just 48 g of oil instead of 16 g.

How much fragrance oil goes in a three-wick candle? At 8%, 32 g in an illustrative 400 g candle and 48 g in a 600 g one. The ceilings do not change with size: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%.

Does CSI sell three-wick jars? No three-wick jar is listed in the catalogue on the pull date. Ask on WhatsApp whether CSI can supply one; the costings on this page leave the jar out.

Which wick should I use? Wick sizes for jar diameters are not published in our data. Test three Eco Thin C1 (₹17.70 a set), three Eco Thick C2 (₹28.32) or three Cotton Braided (₹36.00). See wicks.
The short answer
Oils: The same oils as your small jars, tested in the large format. No oil is "for three-wick" in our data, and no throw measurements are published.
Grams: At 8%: 16 g (200 g) · 32 g (400 g) · 48 g (600 g). One 100 g bottle makes 6.25 small candles but only 2.08 600 g candles.
Cost: Woody Oud at 100 g, Chunks, Eco Thin C1, excluding jar: ₹188.62 (200 g) · ₹383.13 (400 g) · ₹565.85 (600 g).
Same oil, same load — what changes is the pool, the wicks and the grams 200 g · 1 wick 16 g oil at 8% 600 g · 3 wicks (illustrative) 48 g oil at 8% — three pools must merge to the glass Oil % unchanged Oil grams × 3 Wicks × 3 Pool area much larger shaded = melt pool (schematic)
Schematic, not to scale. A single wick melts a pool across a small jar. In a wide three-wick vessel each wick melts its own zone, and the zones need to merge to the edge for the candle to burn evenly and release its full scent. The oil and its percentage do not change between the two; the wick count, the oil grams and the pool do. No three-wick jar is listed at CSI, so the 400 g and 600 g sizes here are illustrative.
Straight answer
I'm making large three-wick candles. Do I need different fragrance oils than I use in smaller jars?
Generally, no. Fragrance load is a percentage of the candle's weight, so the same oil at the same load gives the wax the same concentration whether the candle is 200 g or 600 g. The oils you already use in small jars are the right place to start. Test each one in the large format anyway: a wide three-wick pool puts out more scent at once, and a profile that is pleasant in a small jar can feel heavy in a big pool. What really changes is practical. Oil grams triple: 16 g in a 200 g candle, 32 g in an illustrative 400 g and 48 g in a 600 g at 8%. Wicks triple, and wick size for your vessel is something to burn-test, because it is not published in our data. Cost triples: with Woody Oud and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, ₹565.85 of oil, wax and wicks in a 600 g candle before the jar. And your bottles go a third as far. The ceilings stay where they are: Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%. CSI does not list a three-wick jar, so ask us on WhatsApp whether one can be supplied.
One line: same oil, same percentage — three times the grams, three wicks, and one burn test in the big vessel.
The oil for a big candle is bought by the 500 g, not the 100 g. At 48 g per 600 g candle, a 100 g bottle makes two candles. Woody Oud's 500 g (₹2,265.60) makes ten with 20 g to spare, at exactly the same ₹4.53 a gram as the 100 g — so the bigger bottle costs you nothing extra per candle.
Buy Woody Oud

Why the same oils work

An 8% candle is 8% whether it weighs 200 g or 600 g. Size changes the grams, not the recipe.

Fragrance load is oil as a share of the finished weight. In a 200 g candle at 8%, 16 g of oil sits in 184 g of wax. In a 600 g candle at 8%, 48 g sits in 552 g. The ratio is identical, so every gram of wax in the big candle carries exactly as much fragrance as every gram in the small one. Nothing about the oil needs to change for that to be true.

What does change is how much of that wax is melted at once. A three-wick candle is wide, and three flames melt a large pool quickly. More molten surface generally means more scent in the air, which is why big candles are commonly bought for living rooms and open spaces. That is a property of the candle's design, not a stronger oil. It is also the reason to test every oil in the large format before you sell it: a sweet gourmand that is cosy in a bedroom jar can feel overpowering from a pool three times the size, and a light fresh scent that disappears in a small jar may come into its own in a big one. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so the burn test decides.

The load ceilings do not change with size either. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% — the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. A bigger candle is not a reason to push towards them. If the big candle feels weak, the wick and the pool are the first suspects, as with any container. Fragrance Oils for Large Three-Wick Jar Candles lists oils for three-wick jars; this page is about what changes when you scale up the oils you already have.

The common mistake: raising the load because the candle is bigger. A maker scales a 200 g recipe to 600 g, decides a big candle "needs more", and pours it at 11%. The candle now carries 66 g of oil instead of 48 g — ₹81.56 more Woody Oud per candle — and it may burn no better, because the concentration was never the problem. Keep your proven load, and fix the wicks first.

What actually changes

Here is the same oil, Woody Oud, at the same 8% load, in a single-wick 200 g jar and in two illustrative three-wick sizes. Wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo; wicks are Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90 each. The jar is left out, because CSI does not list a three-wick jar — add your own vessel's cost to the last column.

Woody Oud at its 100 g rate (₹4.53/g) · 8% load · Chunks · Eco Thin C1 · excluding jar · CSI live pricing, 24–25 September 2026
Small jar vs three-wick: the same oil, scaled
Format Oil Wax Wicks Oil cost Wax cost Wick cost Oil + wax + wicks Candles per 100 g of oil Candles per 1 kg
Single-wick jar (e.g. White Matte Glass Jar) 16 g 184 g 1 ₹72.50 ₹110.22 ₹5.90 ₹188.62 6.25 62.50
Three-wick, illustrative 400 g 32 g 368 g 3 ₹145.00 ₹220.43 ₹17.70 ₹383.13 3.12 31.25
Three-wick, illustrative 600 g 48 g 552 g 3 ₹217.50 ₹330.65 ₹17.70 ₹565.85 2.08 20.83

Three things stand out. Oil and wax scale exactly with weight: three times the candle, three times the grams and three times the cost. Wicks do not. A 400 g three-wick candle carries the same wick cost as a 600 g one, so per 100 g of candle its wicks cost ₹4.43 against ₹2.95 for both the 200 g single-wick and the 600 g three-wick. And bottles run out three times faster: one 100 g of oil makes 6.25 small candles and 2.08 large ones, which changes which pack size makes sense.

Woody Oud · candles per bottle at 8% · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
How far one bottle goes at each size
Bottle Price 200 g candles (16 g) 400 g candles (32 g) 600 g candles (48 g)
100 g ₹453.12 6.25 3.12 2.08
500 g ₹2,265.60 31.25 15.62 10.42
1 kg ₹4,531.20 62.50 31.25 20.83

For a small-jar maker, 100 g is a sensible production bottle. For a three-wick maker it is barely a test bottle. Woody Oud is priced at the same ₹4.53 a gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg, so moving up is purely about convenience. For oils with a real kilo saving, such as Fallen Leaves (10.0%), the large format reaches that saving sooner, because it uses oil three times as fast.

Price the large candle per gram, not per piece
Customers compare a big candle with three small ones. At the material level they are almost the same: the 600 g three-wick costs ₹565.85 in oil, wax and wicks, and three 200 g candles cost ₹565.85 — the same, before jars. The difference is the vessel and the labour, so that is where the large candle's price has to be justified.

Wicks: the real three-wick decision

If a three-wick candle disappoints, look at the wicks before you look at the oil.

Three flames close together behave differently from one. They heat each other, the pools must merge, and the whole surface has to melt to the glass for the candle to burn evenly and not tunnel. Wick size for a given vessel diameter is not published in our data, and we will not guess one for you. What we can do is price the three wick types CSI lists so you can test them side by side.

Three wicks per candle · 30-candle run = 90 wicks · CSI pricing, 25 September 2026 pull
Wick options for a three-wick candle
Wick Each Per candle (×3) 30 candles (90 wicks) In a 600 g candle
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 ₹5.90 ₹17.70 ₹531.00 ₹2.95 per 100 g of candle
Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 ₹9.44 ₹28.32 ₹849.60 ₹4.72 per 100 g of candle
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ₹12.00 ₹36.00 ₹1,080.00 ₹6.00 per 100 g of candle

The Eco Thin C1 is ₹5.90 at every pack size from 10 to 1,000, the Thick C2 ₹9.44, and the Cotton Braided Ready Made ₹12.00. For three wicks you also need a way to hold them upright while the wax sets; wick stickers are ₹100.00 for 40, which is ₹7.50 of stickers per three-wick candle. Performance Wooden Wicks are also listed (₹590.00 for 10) if your brand wants a crackling wooden wick, but three per candle at ₹59.00 each adds ₹177.00 to every candle.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The dearest wick is not automatically the right one. Three Cotton Braided wicks cost ₹36.00 per candle against ₹17.70 for Eco Thin C1 — ₹18.30 more, or ₹549.00 across 30 candles. Buy ten of each type, pour three test candles, and pay for the braided wick only if it wins the burn test.

Testing an oil in the large format

Your oils have already passed in small jars. The large-format test checks two new things: whether the wicks give a full, clean pool in your vessel, and whether the scent at full pool is pleasant or overwhelming in a room. One 100 g bottle covers three 400 g test candles at 8% (32 g each, 96 g in all) or two 600 g candles with 4 g spare.

1
Weigh your vessel's fillFill your three-wick vessel with water to the pour line and weigh it. Wax is lighter than water, so treat this as an upper bound and confirm with your first pour. Every figure on this page scales from that one number.
2
Pour three candles, one wick type eachSame oil, same load, same wax, same day. One with three Eco Thin C1, one with three Eco Thick C2, one with three Cotton Braided. Label the base.
3
CureSoy is commonly cured one to two weeks. Big candles are no different; judge them at the same age you will sell them.
4
Burn for long enoughA wide candle takes longer to reach a full pool. Burn each for three to four hours on the first session and note when the pools merge and reach the glass. A first burn that stops short often leaves a ring that the candle never recovers from.
5
Watch the flames, then smell the roomScore flame height, soot and whether the jar gets too hot to touch near the rim. Then score scent from the doorway and the far side at 1 and 2 hours. Air the room between candles.
6
Decide wick first, oil secondChoose the wick set that melts cleanly to the edge. Only then judge the oil. If the scent is too heavy at full pool, try the same oil at a lower load before you swap it out.
The CSI principle
Scale the candle, not the recipe.
A proven oil at a proven load is the most valuable thing you own. Moving to a large format is a wick and vessel problem. Solve that, keep the recipe, and your big candle will smell like the small one your customers already buy.

A 30-candle run, priced

Say you launch a festive three-wick line: 30 candles at an illustrative 600 g, ten each in three scents. Each scent needs 480 g of oil at 8%, so one 500 g bottle per scent covers it with 20 g (4%) to spare — inside the 3–5% allowance we suggest as a working assumption. The wax need is 16,560 g; with a 3% allowance, 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of Chunks (17.5 kg) is the cheapest combination of listed packs.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We do not list a three-wick jar, and we do not publish wick sizes for vessel diameters. This page says both, prices what we do sell, and leaves the jar out of every total rather than guess its cost.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and wick-sticker prices from the 25 September 2026 pull. Per-candle, per-bottle and run totals are arithmetic on those prices.

The 400 g and 600 g three-wick sizes are illustrative, not CSI products. The 8% load, cure and burn times and the 3–5% allowance are working assumptions. Load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Frequently asked questions

Do you need special fragrance oil for three-wick candles?
No oil in our data is specific to three-wick candles. The same oils work at the same load percentage; test each one in the large format for wick behaviour and how the scent feels from a wide pool.
How much fragrance oil for a 3-wick candle?
At 8%, 32 g in an illustrative 400 g candle and 48 g in a 600 g one. Multiply your candle's weight by the load. Stay within the wax's stated ceiling: 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464.
Why does my three-wick candle tunnel?
Usually the wicks are too small for the vessel, or the first burn was too short for the pools to merge and reach the glass. Wick sizing is not published in our data, so test three wick types side by side and burn the first session for three to four hours.
Where can I buy three-wick candle jars in India?
CSI does not list a three-wick jar on the pull date. Ask CSI on WhatsApp whether one can be supplied; otherwise source the vessel separately and weigh its fill before you plan oil quantities.
Should I use a higher fragrance load in a large candle?
Not by default. The same load gives the same concentration at any size. A large candle usually smells stronger because of its larger pool. Raise the load only if a test shows the oil needs it, and never above the wax's stated maximum.
What does a three-wick candle cost to make?
With Woody Oud at 8% and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, oil, wax and three Eco wicks cost ₹383.13 in a 400 g candle and ₹565.85 in a 600 g one, before the jar, labour, packaging, freight and GST.
