Fragrance Load · Premium Oil Decision
On an ordinary oil, 7% versus 10% is a few rupees. On a premium inspired-by oil it can be more than a hundred rupees a candle — more than the wax and wick combined. That is worth a proper test: blind, coded, with enough trials to tell a real difference from luck.
₹107.09
of oil saved per 200 g candle if Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) passes at 7% instead of 10%, at ₹17,848.00 / kg · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I know if 7% performs as well as 10%? Run a triangle test. Present three coded candles — two at one load, one at the other — and ask each judge to pick the odd one out. If judges pick it correctly no more often than luck (1 in 3) predicts, you have no evidence that 10% is doing more than 7%.

How many correct answers mean a real difference? With 12 trials, 8 or more correct is unlikely to be luck (5% level). With 18 trials, 10 or more; with 24, 13 or more. Full table.

Is it worth testing? On Good Girl Inspired at ₹17.85 a gram, 3 points of load is 6 g, or ₹107.09 per 200 g candle. The test kit costs ₹2,704.40 and pays for itself in about 25 candles if 7% passes.

Does "no difference found" prove they are the same? No. It means your test could not detect one. With few trials a real but small difference can hide. Run enough trials, and always confirm 7% meets your absolute target in a customer-sized room. What the result means.
The short answer
The answer: Pour 7% and 10% candles in identical jars, cure together, and run a blind triangle test with several judges and at least 12 trials. Below the critical number of correct answers, 7% has not been shown to be weaker; confirm it meets your target, then produce at 7%.
The money: Good Girl Inspired: ₹356.96 of oil per candle at 10%, ₹249.87 at 7%. For 500 candles: 10 kg vs 7 kg of oil, ₹1,78,480.00 vs ₹1,24,936.00.
The ceiling: In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 10% is the wax maker's stated maximum; in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 13%. Your reference should never exceed the ceiling.
The triangle test — can your judges find the odd candle more often than luck allows? 318 742 506 Three coded candles: two at one load, one at the other Judge names the odd one out. Guessing is right 1 time in 3. Shading here is for the reader only — the judge sees identical jars. Correct answers needed to call it a real difference Trials Luck alone Needed 6 about 2 5 or more 9 about 3 6 or more 12 about 4 8 or more 15 about 5 9 or more 18 about 6 10 or more 24 about 8 13 or more Thresholds are binomial arithmetic at the usual 5% level (chance = 1/3), not a CSI measurement.
A triangle test asks a simpler question than "which is stronger?" — it asks whether judges can tell the two loads apart at all. Because a guess is right one time in three, you need noticeably more than a third of answers correct before a difference counts as real. The right-hand table is ordinary binomial arithmetic.
Straight answer
I'm using an expensive fragrance oil — how do I determine whether 7% performs just as well as 10% before committing to commercial production?
Run a blind triangle test before you buy the production quantity. Pour two candles at 7% (14 g of oil in a 200 g candle) and two at 10% (20 g), in the same wax, jar and wick, poured and cured together. In each trial, a judge meets three coded candles burning in three similar rooms (or three sessions in one room) — two at one load and one at the other — and names the odd one out. A guess is right one time in three. Across at least 12 trials, count the correct answers: 8 or more out of 12 means the judges can genuinely tell the loads apart; fewer means your test found no detectable difference. Then check the absolute target: does the 7% candle still do its job in a room the size your customers use? If both answers favour 7%, produce at 7%. On Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) at ₹17,848.00 a kilo, that decision is worth ₹107.09 per candle and ₹1,07,088.00 per thousand. The test kit costs about ₹2,704.40. If the judges can tell them apart, do not simply stay at 10%: test 8.5% the same way. In CSI 464, 10% is the wax maker's stated maximum, so it is the top of your comparison.
One line: if blind judges cannot find the 7% candle more often than luck, you are paying for 3% of oil nobody notices.
The test needs 68 g of oil: two candles at 14 g and two at 20 g. For Good Girl Inspired, two 50 g bottles cost ₹1,784.00 — one rupee less than the 100 g at ₹1,785.00 — and give you the same 100 g, with 32 g spare for an 8.5% candle if you need it.

Is the test worth running?

On a ₹3-a-gram oil, three points of load is pocket change. On a ₹17-a-gram oil it is more than the jar.

Premium and inspired-by oils sit at the top of CSI's price range, and that is exactly where a formal load test earns its keep. The table prices five of them at their 1 kg rate, inside a 200 g candle, at 10% and 7%. The last column is what three points of load costs across a thousand candles.

200 g candle · oil at the 1 kg price · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
What 10% vs 7% costs on premium oils
Oil 1 kg price Oil per candle at 10% At 7% Difference per candle Difference × 1,000
Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) ₹17,848.00 ₹356.96 ₹249.87 ₹107.09 ₹1,07,088.00
Hawas (Rasasi Inspired) ₹16,528.00 ₹330.56 ₹231.39 ₹99.17 ₹99,168.00
Khamrah Qahwa ₹15,056.00 ₹301.12 ₹210.78 ₹90.34 ₹90,336.00
9 PM (Afnan Inspired) ₹12,960.00 ₹259.20 ₹181.44 ₹77.76 ₹77,760.00
Delina (Parfums De Marly Inspired) ₹11,952.00 ₹239.04 ₹167.33 ₹71.71 ₹71,712.00

For comparison, the fixed materials of the same candle in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — about 186 g of wax at ₹507.40 a kilo, a ₹5.90 Eco Thin C1 wick and a ₹70.80 White Matte Glass Jar — come to roughly ₹171.08. On Good Girl Inspired, the three points of oil alone (₹107.09) cost more than the wax and wick together (₹100.28) and well over half of the whole fixed bill. This is why an expensive oil is the one where you should be most careful about load, and why a loose "10% to be safe" is most costly exactly where it is most common.

Price is not the only reason to test. Premium oils often go into a brand's hero candle, the one with the highest selling price and the most demanding customers. If 7% is genuinely weaker, you want to know before those customers do. The test protects both sides: it finds the saving if it exists, and stops you taking a saving that is not there. For cheaper oils, the lighter step-down method in finding the lowest load that still throws is usually enough, and if you have not yet settled a load for each scent at all, start with the per-scent grid.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A premium oil at 10% is one of the most profitable things we sell. If a proper test shows your candle is just as good at 7%, buy 7% worth. On a 500-candle run of Good Girl Inspired that is 7 kg instead of 10 kg — ₹53,544.00 less spent with us. We would rather you had a margin that lets you reorder than a stock of oil you did not need.

The triangle test for candles

A triangle test is a standard method in sensory testing for one question: can people tell two things apart? It is well suited to the 7% vs 10% decision because it does not ask judges to rate strength, which people do inconsistently. It asks them only to find the odd one out. For candles, the complication is that hot throw needs a burning candle in a room, so each "sample" is a room, not a sniff.

1
Make four candles, two per loadIn CSI 464 (or your production wax): two at 7% — 14 g oil + 186 g wax — and two at 10% — 20 g + 180 g. Same jar, same wick you use in production, same fill, same addition temperature (CSI's guidance for CSI 464 is 80–90°C; confirm on the product page), same stirring time. Weigh by the finished-weight convention (oil as a share of the finished candle).
2
Cure together and code the jarsSame shelf, same cover, same age at test — 14 days is a sensible working checkpoint; why cure age must match. Someone other than the judges labels each jar with a random three-digit code and keeps the key. Identical jars, no marks that give the load away.
3
Set up three similar spacesThree rooms of similar size, or one room used for three sessions with a full airing between them. Close windows, switch fans off or set them identically, and keep the doors the same. Light each candle for the same time before judging — for example, one hour.
4
Present three candles per trialEach trial uses two candles of one load and one of the other. Rotate the six possible arrangements (AAB, ABA, BAA, ABB, BAB, BBA) so the odd candle is sometimes 7% and sometimes 10%, and sometimes in the first room, sometimes the last.
5
Ask one question, then one follow-up"Which of these three is different?" The judge must choose one, even if unsure. Then: "Which do you think is stronger?" Record both. Only the first answer counts for the triangle result; the second tells you the direction if a difference is found.
6
Run enough trialsSeveral judges, each doing a few trials on different days, with rest and fresh air between rooms (fragrance fatigue explains why). Twelve trials is a practical minimum; eighteen or twenty-four is better. Do not let judges discuss their answers until everyone is done.
Example session plan · 4 judges × 3 trials = 12 trials
Rotating the arrangements
Trial Room 1 Room 2 Room 3 Odd one
1 7% 7% 10% Room 3 (10%)
2 10% 7% 10% Room 2 (7%)
3 7% 10% 10% Room 1 (7%)
4 10% 10% 7% Room 3 (7%)
5 7% 10% 7% Room 2 (10%)
6 10% 7% 7% Room 1 (10%)
7–12 Repeat 1–6 in a new order Balanced: 6 odd at 7%, 6 at 10%
Two candles per load is enough
Each trial uses two of one load and one of the other, so two candles of each load cover every arrangement. A 200 g candle burns for many hours, so the same four candles serve several sessions — but track total burn time and do not judge a candle that has burned down much further than its partner. If they drift apart, pour a fresh set.

How many correct answers is "real"?

One judge picking the odd candle proves nothing. A third of guesses are right.

Because each guess has a one-in-three chance of being right, you need clearly more than a third correct before you can say the judges are detecting a difference rather than getting lucky. The table gives the minimum number of correct answers at the usual 5% significance level — meaning that if there were truly no difference, you would reach that many correct by luck less than one time in twenty. It is plain binomial arithmetic, not a CSI measurement.

Triangle test · chance of a correct guess = 1/3 · one-sided 5% level
Correct answers needed to call a difference real
Trials Expected correct by luck alone Correct needed As a share of trials
6 2 5 83%
9 3 6 67%
12 4 8 67%
15 5 9 60%
18 6 10 56%
24 8 13 54%
30 10 15 50%

Read it like this. With 12 trials, luck alone would give about 4 correct. If your judges get 8 or more, they can tell 7% from 10% in your candle. If they get 4, 5, 6 or 7, the test did not find a difference. Notice that the share needed falls as trials rise: with 30 trials, half correct is enough. More trials let you detect smaller differences.

The CSI principle
Ask whether they can tell, before asking which is stronger.
People rate strength inconsistently, especially across rooms and hours — which is why the full scoring method uses anchored scales and replicates. Finding the odd one out is a simpler, sharper question. If judges cannot find the 7% candle more often than luck, the extra 3% of oil is not doing anything they can detect.

What the result does and does not prove

A triangle test has two possible outcomes, and each needs careful reading.

Interpreting the result · working decision rules
From triangle result to decision
Result What it means What it does not mean Next step
Below the critical number (e.g. under 8 of 12) Your test found no detectable difference between 7% and 10% That they are identical — a small difference may exist below what 12 trials can detect Confirm 7% meets your absolute target in a customer-sized room; if yes, produce at 7%
At or above it (e.g. 8+ of 12) Judges can tell them apart That 10% is better — check the "which is stronger" answers, and the burn If 10% is stronger, test 8.5% the same way; if 7% is preferred, you have your answer
Borderline (one short of the critical number) Weak evidence of a difference A clear yes or no Run another 12 trials and combine them (24 trials: 13 needed)
Judges disagree on which is stronger They notice a difference but not a consistent direction That either load is better Consider whether the difference matters to your customer; choose on cost

The first row is the important one. "No difference found" is a practical answer, not a proof of sameness. The protection against a hidden small difference is twofold: run enough trials, and never skip the absolute check. A 7% that nobody can tell from 10% on the workbench but that disappears in a large living room is not a pass. Room size and hot throw and testing for Indian homes with ceiling fans cover how to set a realistic target.

The test that could not fail. A maker runs three trials, gets one right, and concludes 7% is "the same". With three trials, even a large difference would often go undetected — and one correct out of three is exactly what luck predicts. Too few trials produce a "no difference" result almost every time. Use at least twelve, and treat anything fewer as a first look, not a decision.

From result to production order

Once you have a load, the order follows. Here is a 500-candle run of 200 g candles of Good Girl Inspired at both loads, priced at the 1 kg rate of ₹17,848.00. The oil is sold in 50 g, 100 g and 1 kg packs; there is no 500 g listed.

500 × 200 g candles · oil at the 1 kg price · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
The order at 10% vs 7%
Load Oil per candle Oil for 500 candles 1 kg packs Oil cost Per candle
10% 20 g 10 kg 10 ₹1,78,480.00 ₹356.96
7% 14 g 7 kg 7 ₹1,24,936.00 ₹249.87
Difference 6 g 3 kg 3 ₹53,544.00 ₹107.09

Those quantities are exact, with no allowance for pour loss or test burns. In production, plan 3–5% extra as a working assumption; sizing a bulk order from your tested dosage works through the rounding into packs, and comparing oils by cost per finished candle puts the result next to other oils. For several kilos of one premium oil, ask for a quote on WhatsApp — no volume discount figure is published, so ask rather than assume.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Premium oils at 10% are among our best sales. This page shows you how to check, properly, whether you could buy 30% less of them — because a hero candle that makes money gets reordered, and that matters more to us than one large order.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco Candle Wick prices are from the 25 September pull; the White Matte Glass Jar is Blog 760's figure verified 10 September 2026. The critical values are binomial arithmetic (chance 1/3, one-sided 5% level); every rupee figure is arithmetic on listed prices.

The triangle test is a standard sensory-testing design; the room set-up, one-hour burn, 14-day cure checkpoint, twelve-trial minimum and 8.5% follow-up are working assumptions for candle use. CSI publishes no throw or dosage data for any oil, and nothing here predicts how any oil will perform at 7% or 10%. Frequently asked questions

How do I test if a lower fragrance load smells the same?
Use a blind triangle test: three coded candles, two at one load and one at the other, and ask judges to name the odd one out. Repeat for at least 12 trials across several judges. If correct answers stay below the critical number (8 of 12), no difference was detected.
Is 7% fragrance load enough for soy candles?
For some oils in some candles, yes; for others, no. There is no universal answer and CSI publishes no dosage data for any oil. Test your oil in your wax, wick and jar against your current load, blind.
How many people do I need for a candle smell test?
At least three or four judges, each doing a few trials, to reach 12 or more trials in total. More trials let you detect smaller differences. One person judging their own candles is not a blind test.
What is a triangle test in candle making?
A sensory test borrowed from food and fragrance testing. Judges are given three samples — here, three coded burning candles — of which two are identical, and asked to pick the odd one. Because guessing is right one time in three, a difference is only real when judges score clearly above that.
Why are inspired-by fragrance oils so expensive?
They are complex profiles modelled on well-known perfumes and sit at the top of CSI's price range, from about ₹9 to ₹24 a gram at 1 kg. That is why load testing matters most on them: each point of load in a 200 g candle is 2 g of the dearest oil in your range.
Can I go above 10% if 10% is not strong enough?
Not in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, which is rated up to 10%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%. Before going higher, check the wick, cure and room — I Want Maximum Hot Throw from My Soy Candle — How Do I Optimise Fragrance Load Without Simply Adding More Oil? covers how to raise throw without more oil.
Prove it blind, then order
Two loads, three rooms, twelve trials. Then buy only the oil your customers can smell.
Inspired-by and premium oils from ₹9.08 to ₹24.06 a gram, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 from ₹260.00 and Chunks from ₹299.00, wicks from ₹59.00 and jars at ₹354.00 for 5. Send us your tested load and candle count for a production quote.
