Maximum Fragrance Load vs Best-Performing Fragrance Load — Why They Are Not the Same

Which load actually performs best, then? Nobody can tell you from a page, because it depends on your wax, jar, wick, room and the oil itself. What you can do is find it in one ladder: five 200 g jars at 6, 8, 10, 12 and 13%, identical in every other way, scored blind at day 14. On Japanese Cherry Blossom and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks that ladder costs ₹1,103.02 in materials, once.
How much does pouring at the ceiling cost me? On a 200 g candle, moving from 8% to 13% of Japanese Cherry Blossom adds ₹48.42 of oil per candle — ₹14,526.00 across a 300-candle festive run. The same ₹4,842.00 bottle makes about 62 candles at 8% and about 38 at 13%.
Do any CSI oils actually allow 13%? Two of the 92 live oil pages do: Cinnamon Vanilla (up to 13% of total wax weight) and Japanese Cherry Blossom (6–13%). Both pages also ask you to start lower. Every other page that publishes a candle figure stops at or below 10%, and the lower of the wax figure and the oil figure always governs.
A ceiling is a permission. A load is a decision.
When a wax page states a fragrance maximum, it is describing the formulation: this is the most oil the wax has been formulated to carry and still behave like a candle wax — to set properly, to hold the glass, to burn without the oil separating out. It is the wax manufacturer's stated maximum, and it is a boundary. It answers one question only, and the question is am I allowed. It says nothing at all about whether the candle smells better there than two points lower, because scent strength was never what the number was measuring.
An oil page's candle range is a different kind of statement again. It is the fragrance house's guidance for how much of this particular composition belongs in wax — which is partly about performance and partly about what the wax can physically dissolve and hold. When a page prints 6–10%, both ends are real. The 6 is not a failure state and the 10 is not a target. It is a band, and a band means the supplier expects different makers to land in different places inside it.
So every candle you pour is governed by two ceilings at once. The wax grade's stated maximum and the oil page's stated range both apply, and the lower of the two governs. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; pour Japanese Cherry Blossom in it and your ceiling is 10%, not the oil's 13%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13%; pour British Rose in it and your ceiling is 10%, because that is what the rose page states for soy. And Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a fragrance ceiling at all, which is worth saying plainly rather than assuming — ask on WhatsApp before you design a load around it.
Then, inside whatever ceiling governs, sits a second and much more interesting number: the load at which your specific candle stops improving. That number is not printed anywhere, for a simple reason. It depends on your jar width, your wick, your wax grade, your cure discipline, the family of oil and the room the candle ends up in. A supplier who printed it would be guessing about your workshop. What a good supplier can do is publish the band, describe what the ends of it behave like, and tell you how to find your own point inside it. That is what this page is for.
CSI's own pages already print both numbers
The clearest example in the catalogue is the wax. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states a maximum of 13% of total wax weight — and in the same usage guidance names 8% as a starting point, 10% as the recommended load, and asks for thorough test burning at 13%. That is one page, three numbers, and only one of them is a ceiling. A maker who reads the 13 and ignores the 8 and the 10 has skipped the pair of numbers that were written for them.
The oil pages do the same thing in their own way. Japanese Cherry Blossom publishes the widest candle range in the CSI range, 6–13% of total wax weight, and then divides it into three described bands: 6–8% light and airy, 9–11% balanced — described on the page as the everyday choice for living rooms and gifting — and 12–13% rich and pronounced. The page is not telling you to pour 13%. It is telling you that 13% is a different product experience from 9%, and asking you to choose one.
Cinnamon Vanilla is the only other oil in the range whose page allows 13%, and its guidance is to start at 8–10% and increase, and to test at the lower end before committing to full production loads. It also states 2.5% vanillin, which means warm toning in white wax — a reminder that the consequences of a high load are not only about scent. Meanwhile a large group of the perfume-inspired oil pages print a recommended load of 7–10% with an explicit instruction to start at 7%, alongside a separate maximum table that lists candles at up to 10%. Across all 92 live fragrance oil pages the pattern holds. 72 publish a candle usage figure; of those, 56 publish a band with two ends rather than a single number, and 19 name an explicit lower figure to start at. Only 2 of the 92 allow 13% in candles. The remaining 20 pages publish no candle percentage at all — in that case there is no ceiling to read, and the honest answer is to ask on WhatsApp rather than to assume the wax page's maximum applies to an oil that never claimed it.
Why more oil stops paying long before the ceiling
Think of the wax as a solvent holding the fragrance in solution. Below a certain proportion the oil is fully carried: it sits distributed through the wax, it releases steadily as the pool warms, and nothing about the candle's structure changes. Add more and you are asking the same solvent to hold more, and the wax is the part that starts to compromise — softer set, a greasier surface, oil that migrates towards the top or the glass as the candle cools, a wick swimming in a pool that is thinner than it was designed for. Those are structural effects. They arrive whether or not anyone can smell the difference.
The release side has its own limit, and it is geometric. Hot throw comes off the liquid surface of the melt pool, and that surface is fixed by your jar and your wick — not by the percentage in the jar. A candle with more oil per gram of wax is presenting a slightly richer liquid to the same area of air at roughly the same temperature. The first increments of that are clearly worth having. Later increments are asking a surface that has not changed to deliver a proportionally larger result, and it cannot.
Put those two together and the shape is easy to reason about even though nobody publishes it. Early percentage points buy a lot. Middle points buy less. Somewhere inside the permitted band there is a point where the next gram buys almost nothing you can detect but still costs you every candle, forever — and past it, the structural side starts charging you in surface finish, wick behaviour and shelf life. That point is what the phrase best-performing load means. It is not a mood. It is a real place on the ladder, and it moves with your jar, your wick and your oil.
It is worth being exact about what is not being claimed here. CSI does not publish a measured curve of scent strength against load, no such curve appears on this page, and one should be suspicious of any supplier that shows one without a test method next to it. What is published, and what this page relies on, is that the pages themselves separate a starting point from a maximum — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page's 8, 10 and 13, and the Japanese Cherry Blossom page's three named bands. The rest is the ladder in your own workshop.
What the last three percentage points actually cost
Work the whole permitted range on one candle. Two hundred grams of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹119.80 of wax. Add an Eco Candle Wicks C1 at ₹5.90 and the candle costs the same before any oil goes in, at every load on the ladder. Only the fragrance line moves — from ₹58.10 at the bottom of Japanese Cherry Blossom's range to ₹125.89 at the top.

Two things in that table deserve to be read twice. The first is the last column: a decision made once, in a moment, without a test, is worth up to ₹14,526.00 on a single festive run and ₹24,210.00 across 500 candles. The second is the bottle column. The same ₹4,842.00 kilogram of oil becomes about 62 candles at 8% and about 38 at 13%. If you are buying oil for a fixed number of units, the load is not a formulation choice — it is a purchasing decision made months earlier.
The cost of a percentage point is not the same for every oil, which is why the ladder matters more on some shelves than others. Sixteen grams — 8% of 200 g — is ₹49.09 in British Rose, ₹59.81 in Roasted Coffee, ₹72.88 in Cinnamon Vanilla and ₹143.36 in Gilli Mitti Patchouli. Moving British Rose from 8% to its 10% ceiling costs ₹12.27 a candle; moving Gilli Mitti the same two points costs ₹35.84, or ₹10,752.00 across 300. On an expensive oil, an untested percentage point is a serious line in a festive budget.

The five-jar ladder that finds your own load
The ladder is the only honest way to convert a permitted band into a number you can put on a costing sheet. It works because it changes exactly one thing. Same wax, same oil, same jar, same wick, same pour temperature, same stir time, same cure, same room — only the percentage moves. Anything else you change at the same time makes the result unrepeatable and leaves you paying for all of it forever.

Two rules keep the ladder honest. First, scores are written before you walk further into the room, because the first three seconds are what a customer gets. Second, the winner has to win twice. A single evening's verdict is a mood; two evenings with the jars in a different order is a result. If the top rungs tie, take the cheapest one — a tie is the ladder telling you that the extra grams bought nothing.
When the ceiling genuinely is the right answer
There are real cases. A page that describes an oil as moderate in strength and gives it a wide band, as Japanese Cherry Blossom does, is telling you the upper band exists for people who want a pronounced version of a gentle composition. A large, open Indian living room with a ceiling fan running is a harder job than a 10 by 12 foot bedroom, and a maker whose whole range is built for the former may genuinely settle higher. A candle designed as a statement piece in a gifting box, lit once for an evening, is a different product from a 40-hour bedside candle.
But before you accept a top-rung win, check three things that fake it. If the pool never reaches the glass in any of the five jars, the ladder was measuring wick, not load, and the top jar won because it was the only one carrying enough oil to be audible from a small pool — fix the wick with Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5.90 for C1 or ₹9.44 for C2 and run the ladder again. If the scoring was done in the workshop, your adapted nose was rewarding whichever jar was loudest rather than whichever was best. And if you scored on one evening only, the result is not yet a result.
Then check the two things a high load charges you besides money. Surface and set: high loads in soy show up as a softer top, more visible frosting and a greater chance of a tacky or oily film after a hot courier journey. Colour: Cinnamon Vanilla states 2.5% vanillin, so a 13% pour puts noticeably more vanillin into white wax than a 9% pour does, and the yellowing is cosmetic but permanent. None of that makes the ceiling wrong. It makes it a decision with more than one line item.
Indian realities that move the best load without moving the ceiling
Heat is the big one. In a 40°C afternoon in Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur, the wax in a jar on a shelf is already warm before the wick is lit, the pool forms faster and wider, and release starts sooner. The same candle in a December bedroom in Shimla or a cool Pune morning is working from a colder start. That is a real difference in perceived strength and it has nothing to do with the percentage. The correct response is not to raise the load for winter and lower it for summer — it is to record the ambient temperature next to every score so that you know which season a verdict belongs to, and to test your range at least twice a year.
Air movement matters as much and is discussed far less. A ceiling fan on low pulls warm air off the pool and dilutes it through the room before anyone registers it; a split air-conditioner adds a downward draught that can narrow the pool. Neither is wrong in a customer's home, which is the point: score the ladder once with the fan off and the door shut, then once under a fan at a fixed speed, and keep the two sets of scores in separate columns. A load that wins in still air and loses under a fan is telling you something about your wick, not about your oil.
Monsoon humidity in Mumbai, Kochi and Kolkata changes what your own nose reports and changes how soy surfaces look, so keep cured stock sealed and at a steady temperature. October couriers and warehouse rooms run hot, and a candle poured at the top of its band is the one most likely to arrive with a film at the surface — a load consequence that reaches you as a refund rather than as a comment about scent. With Diwali on 8 November 2026, a batch poured by mid-October has room for a 14–21 day cure plus transit, which means the ladder needs to be finished in late September. That timing, not the percentage, is what usually decides whether a festive range is any good.
One last commercial note, because it is where the two numbers meet the bank account. If you have committed to 500 festive candles and you are choosing between 8% and 13% of Japanese Cherry Blossom, the difference is ₹24,210.00 of oil. That is not a rounding error on a small brand's Diwali. It is the cost of a jar order, or of the ladder that would have answered the question, seventeen times over.
