CSI Wick Lab · 8.5 cm Jars
A big single that reaches the glass and soots has not passed. Check the trim and the air first, then run one Cotton Braided against two Eco C1, three candles each, and let soot, edge reach and flame height decide.
₹11.80
wicks for a paired candle (2 × Eco C1) against ₹12.00 for one Cotton Braided · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My 8.5 cm jar only reaches the edge with a very large single wick, and that wick soots. Will two smaller wicks give a more controlled pool? Often, but don't assume it: run them head to head. One Cotton Braided against two Eco C1, three candles each, same wax, oil, load, fill and room, logged for soot, edge reach by burn 3 and trimmed flame height. Soot is a gate, not a trade: a configuration that soots doesn't win on edge reach.

Is it the wick, or the way it was burned? Check first. Re-burn one candle trimmed to about 5–6 mm, in still air, for a full session. If the soot goes away, the fix is trimming and airflow, and you buy nothing.

Is a pair dearer? Not in wicks. One Cotton Braided is ₹12.00 a candle; two C1s are ₹11.80. The difference is ₹0.20 a candle in the pair's favour, or ₹200.00 per 1,000 candles. Labour for fixing two wicks is the real cost, and the subject of post 4243.

What does the head-to-head cost? Six 250 g candles at 8% Dark Vanilla (20 g of oil + 230 g of CSI 464): 120 g of oil, 1,380 g of wax, three Cotton Braided and six C1, ₹1,731.61 of materials, your jars not counted.
The short answer
The verdict: two smaller wicks commonly give a calmer, cleaner pool in a jar this wide than one very large wick, but "commonly" is not your candle. Three candles a side decide.
The test: Cotton Braided centred vs 2 × C1 at 39 mm apart in a 7.8 cm inside jar, 250 g fill, 8% Dark Vanilla, three candles each, burns 1–3 of about 3–4 h.
The log: soot grade 0–3 from a photo of the glass after each session, trimmed flame height at 1, 2 and 3 h against a ruler, and ring width at N, E, S, W at the end of each burn.
The rule (judgement): the pair wins if it reaches the glass by burn 3 at soot grade 0–1 in all three candles. A clean pair that falls short of the edge goes to 2 × C2, not back to the sooty single.
Burn 3, same jar, same fill: one big wick against two small Side sections to scale (2.4 px per mm): 85 mm outside, 78 mm inside (0.35 cm wall assumed), 90 mm tall, 6 mm base assumed. Dark Vanilla 8%, 250 g of CSI 464. Flame, depth and soot are a worked-example log at 3 h, not CSI data. A · One Cotton Braided, centred Edge: pool meets the glass by burn 2 Trimmed flame about 5.8 cm; carbon cap Centre depth about 1.6 cm Soot grade 2: dark band on the glass Wick: ₹12.00 a candle B · Two Eco C1, 39 mm apart Edge: ring 4 → 1 → 0 mm, burns 1–3 Trimmed flames about 3.2 cm; no cap Centre depth about 0.9 cm Soot grade 0: clean glass Wicks: ₹11.80 a candle 39 mm wax at burn 3 soot band flame 5.8 cm flames 3.2 cm 1 cm at this scale
The two arms of the head-to-head at burn 3, drawn to scale from the side (2.4 px per mm) in the same 8.5 cm jar. Both reach the glass; only one does it cleanly. Arm A's pool is deeper and its flame roughly twice as tall, with a carbon cap and a soot band on the glass. Jar height, base and wax level are assumptions; flame, depth and soot readings are a worked example, not CSI data.
Straight answer
My 8.5 cm jar needs a very large single wick to reach the edges, but that wick produces soot. Would two smaller wicks create a more controlled melt pool?
Quite possibly, and it is cheap to find out. A single wick has to throw its heat 3.9 cm to the glass of a 7.8 cm inside jar; when it is sized big enough to do that, the flame commonly runs tall, the pool deep, and a heavy, vanillin-rich oil like Dark Vanilla can add carbon at the tip. Two smaller wicks share the job, each serving about 23.89 cm² instead of 47.78 cm², and each flame is smaller. That often means less soot and a shallower pool, but a pair also leaves the wall at right angles to the wicks further from any flame (4.36 cm), so it can fall short at the sides. So: first rule out trim and draught with one clean re-burn. Then run the head-to-head: three candles on one Cotton Braided, three on 2 × Eco C1, same wax, Dark Vanilla at 8%, 250 g fill, same cure and room. Log soot grade, trimmed flame and ring width at burns 1–3. The pair wins if all three reach the glass by burn 3 at soot grade 0–1. If the pair is clean but short, try 2 × C2 next; don't go back to the wick that soots. Then take the winner to about 1 cm left before you approve it.
One line: rule out trim and draught, then three candles a side; soot is a gate, and the edge by burn 3 is the tie-break.
For the head-to-head: Eco C1 20 for ₹118.00 (the 10-pack is out of stock on 29 September 2026), Cotton Braided 10 for ₹120.00 if you don't already have them, and a Steel Wick Holder pack of 5 for ₹250.00 to hold the pairs while they set: ₹488.00 if you already own the wax, oil and jars.
Eco C1 20 — ₹118.00

First, make sure the soot belongs to the wick

A wick left long, in a draught, will soot whatever size it is. Test that before you blame the size.

Soot is incomplete burning at the flame: more fuel arriving than the flame can burn cleanly. A wick that is too big for its candle is one common cause. Others are just as common, and cheaper to fix: a wick left long between burns, a flame flickering in a draught from a ceiling fan, an AC vent or an open window, and a carbon cap left on the wick from the last session. Heavy fragrance loads are commonly linked to soot as well. Before you pour six candles to compare configurations, take one more session on the candle you already have.

1
Trim to 5–6 mm and remove the capLet the candle cool fully, pinch off any carbon ball and trim to about 5–6 mm. One CSI trimmer page puts it as "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn".
2
Still air, a full sessionFan off, AC vent away, window shut, candle on a level surface away from people walking past. Burn about 3–4 hours; the rough rule of thumb is about 3.1 hours for 7.8 cm inside.
3
Look at the flame, not the roomAt 1, 2 and 3 hours: flame height against a ruler held behind the jar, whether the tip trails smoke, and whether a cap is forming. Never touch the glass.
4
Photograph the glass at the endHold a white card behind the jar and photograph the inside of the glass above the pool. That photo is your soot reading for this session.
5
DecideClean glass and a steady flame under about 5 cm: the soot was trim or air. Keep the wick, set a trimming routine and burn on. Soot again, with the flame tall and capped: it belongs to the configuration. Pour the head-to-head.

Where soot lands on the glass, and at what depth it starts, can tell you more about its cause; that reading is the soot-band post. Why a big single flame tends to soot where two small ones don't is the 9 cm coffee post, which owns the mechanism. This page owns the comparison.

Mistake: taking soot from the first ten minutes as a verdict. What happens: a fresh light often smokes for a moment while the wick primes, especially after a trim, and a flame that is still settling can trail a wisp. Fix: judge soot from the 1-, 2- and 3-hour readings and the end-of-session photo, never from lighting.

Setting up the head-to-head

Two arms, three candles each, one variable. Everything else is held still or the comparison means nothing.

The jar. CSI lists no 8.5 cm jar, so this is yours; measure the inside at the wax surface, mid-height and near the base. On an assumed 0.35 cm wall, 8.5 cm outside is 7.8 cm inside, a 47.78 cm² pool. How to measure it, and why the outside figure misleads, are in the 8.5–9 cm hub.

The fill and oil. Our worked example pours 250 g at 8% of total weight: 20 g of Dark Vanilla + 230 g of CSI 464. The Dark Vanilla page states "candles (6-10%)"; CSI 464's page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", so 8% is inside both ceilings. Weigh your own fill line if it differs; keep it identical across all six.

Arm A, the big single. One Cotton Braided, centred. If the big single you have now is another supplier's wick, use that instead; the point is to test the configuration that soots.

Arm B, the pair. Two Eco C1 on a diameter, 3.9 cm (39 mm) apart, which puts each wick 1.95 cm from the wall along their line. That spacing, equal to the inside radius, is a labelled starting point for testing, not an answer; the 9 cm placement drawing is post 4252. Stick the tabs on marks made from a paper template, and hold the wicks upright while the wax sets.

From nothing the cash outlay is ₹2,455.40. The 30 g of Dark Vanilla left over is enough for 2 retest candles at 6% (15 g each), the page's lower figure, if the load turns out to be part of the soot story. Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Pour, cure and burn order
Pour all six the same day from one melt. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; your jar has no CSI heat wording, so pour at the low end into clean, evenly warmed jars (our judgement). The Dark Vanilla page says to "cure soy wax candles for at least 48-72 hours before burn testing"; many makers wait about a week. Cure all six together, then burn them in alternating order (A1, B1, A2, B2 …) in the same still room so no arm gets the warm afternoons.

Three things to log, the same way every session

Soot, edge and flame. If you log them differently for each arm, you have compared your notes, not your wicks.

Soot grade, 0 to 3

After each session, when the flame is out and the jar has cooled, photograph the inside of the glass above the pool with a white card behind it, and grade it. The scale is ours, chosen because two people can agree on it from a photo: 0, clean glass, no smoke seen during the session; 1, a faint grey haze, no smoke trail seen; 2, a visible dark band on the glass or an occasional smoke trail from the flame tip; 3, a heavy black band, smoke in still air, or carbon falling into the pool. Note any carbon cap on the wick at 2 and 3 hours with its rough size. The white-cloth wipe card is post 4255's method; either works, but pick one and keep it.

Edge reach, in millimetres

At the end of each burn, photograph from directly above with a ruler across the rim and read the ring of solid wax at N, E, S and W. For the pair, put N and S on the wick line and E and W at right angles to it, because the pair's weak point, if it has one, is E and W. "0" means the pool meets the glass.

Trimmed flame height

At 1, 2 and 3 hours, hold a ruler behind the jar, not touching it, and read the flame from the wick tip to the top of the visible flame. For the pair, log both flames. Many makers use about 2.5–5 cm as a practical range; that is a rule of thumb, not CSI data. Log pool depth at the centre with a skewer at the end of each burn.

Worked-example log · burns 1–3 · mean of three candles per arm
Ring in mm at N / E / S / W (pair: N and S on the wick line) · flame at 3 h · illustrative figures, not CSI data
Arm · burn Ring at end Flame at 3 h Centre depth Carbon cap Soot grade
A, Cotton Braided · 1 3 / 3 / 4 / 3 about 5.2 cm about 1.2 cm small 1
A · 2 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 about 5.6 cm about 1.5 cm yes 2
A · 3 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 about 5.8 cm about 1.6 cm yes 2
B, 2 × C1 · 1 1 / 4 / 1 / 4 about 3.0 cm each about 0.7 cm none 0
B · 2 0 / 1 / 0 / 2 about 3.1 cm each about 0.8 cm none 0
B · 3 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 about 3.2 cm each about 0.9 cm none 0

In this worked example the single wins the race to the glass by a burn and loses everything else: a flame above the practical range, a pool past 1 cm, a cap, and a soot band. The pair starts behind at E and W, exactly where the geometry says it will, and closes by burn 3 with small, clean flames. That is the result the question hopes for. Yours may not be: some pairs never close E and W, and some big singles burn clean once trimmed and moved out of a draught.

Mistake: averaging the three candles and missing the one that sooted. Why it matters: a customer only ever sees one candle. Fix: keep the table per candle as well as the mean, and let the worst candle in an arm, not the average, carry the soot grade.

Reading the head-to-head

Soot is a gate. Edge reach is the tie-break. Nothing is approved until the last centimetre.

Read after burn 3, per arm, using the worst of the three candles. Our rule, labelled as judgement: an arm passes burn 3 when every candle shows soot grade 0–1, a trimmed flame inside about 2.5–5 cm, a centre no deeper than about 1 cm, and a ring of 0–1 mm all round. An arm with grade 2 or 3 in any candle fails, however well it reaches the glass.

Head-to-head outcomes · after burn 3
Three candles per arm · worst candle decides · then full life to about 1 cm left
Single (A) Pair (B) Reading Next move
Reaches the edge, soot 2–3 Reaches the edge, soot 0–1 The question's hope: the pair controls the pool Full life on the pair; watch the glass in the final third
Reaches the edge, soot 2–3 Clean, but E/W ring still 2 mm or more The pair is too small, or too close together Round 2: 2 × C2 at the same spacing, three candles; if E/W persists, see the spacing × size 2 × 2
Reaches the edge, soot 2–3 Soot 2–3 as well Not the configuration: oil, load, trim or air Recheck trimming and draughts; retest at 6% with the oil left over; try an unscented control
Clean (soot 0–1) and reaches the edge Clean and reaches the edge The earlier soot was not the wick's fault Both are candidates; decide with the scorecard and full life
Clean, reaches the edge Clean, short of the edge The single is fine once trimmed Keep the single; set a trim routine
Anything Full pool very fast, tall flames, hot-looking glass The pair may be too big or too close The single-lit diagnostic

Two notes on the second row, the one that trips people up. A clean pair that leaves wax at E and W is tempting to "fix" by going back to the big single, because the single reached the glass. Don't: you would be trading a cosmetic ring for a soot problem that customers see on their walls and lids. Step the pair up to 2 × C2, or look at its spacing. And if 2 × C2 soots too, CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2. At that point the honest options are a spacing change, a lower load within the page's range, or another supplier's in-between size; ask us and we will tell you plainly what we don't have.

Burn 3 is not the finish line
Pairs commonly run warmer in the lower half of a jar than singles, because two flames sit closer to the glass as the wax falls. Carry the winning arm through its full life to about 1 cm left, logging the same three things plus depth and flame lean, and watch the glass without touching it. What to do if a pair passes early and overheats later is the double-wick-too-hot-near-the-bottom post.

When it isn't the wick at all, the comparison still paid for itself: you know that at this load, in this wax, Dark Vanilla soots on anything, and that is a formulation question. The general trade-offs of one huge wick against two smaller ones, in any large jar, are covered in the huge-single-wick-soot post; this page stays with the 8.5 cm run.

₹ per candle: what the wick bill does and doesn't decide

In wicks, the pair is ₹0.20 a candle cheaper. That is the least interesting number on this page.

Per 250 g candle, excluding the jar: ₹160.00 of Dark Vanilla (at the ₹8.00/g average of the bottles bought), ₹116.70 of CSI 464, and the wick. That gives ₹288.70 on one Cotton Braided and ₹288.50 on two C1. If the pair has to go up to 2 × C2 in round 2, its candle costs ₹295.58, and the pair then costs ₹6.88 more than the single in wicks.

Wick cost per candle and per 1,000 candles
Flat per-wick prices at every pack size · CSI live pricing, 29 September 2026 · labour, holders and freight excluded
Configuration Wicks per candle Wick ₹ per candle Wicks for 1,000 candles
One Cotton Braided 1 ₹12.00 ₹12,000.00 (pack of 1,000)
Two Eco C1 2 ₹11.80 ₹11,800.00 (two packs of 1,000)
Two Eco C2 (round 2) 2 ₹18.88 ₹18,880.00 (two packs of 1,000)

The pair of C1s saves ₹200.00 per 1,000 candles in wicks: real, and small next to the oil. At the 500 g price of Dark Vanilla, 1,000 candles at 20 g each is ₹153,600.00 of oil (a worked example). What the wick bill leaves out is the time to fix two wicks, align them on a holder, check the spacing after pouring, and trim two wicks for the customer. That is where a pair can lose, and weighing it properly against soot and edge results is the scorecard post.

Argued against our own interest: don't buy a 500- or 1,000-pack of C1 on the strength of burn 3. The price per wick is ₹5.90 in the 20-pack and in the 1,000-pack, so buying big saves nothing, and a pair that passes burn 3 can still fail in the final third. Buy the 50-pack (₹295.00) for the full-life confirmation, and the big packs only after it passes. And if the soot vanished with a trim and still air, this page has nothing to sell you but a cutter, and you may not need that either.

Holders are the other line the wick bill hides: each paired candle needs its wicks held upright while it sets, which means a Steel Wick Holder (₹50.00 each, reusable) or two marked sticks per jar. For a six-candle test that is trivial; for a 200-candle pour it is a count of holders and a bench layout, covered in the split production plan.

What to buy, and what to skip

Six items in the order the head-to-head needs them, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts use the 250 g worked-example fill (20 g each) and the standard 150 g candle (12 g each).

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
If your soy is different, run the head-to-head in your own wax; soot and edge results don't transfer between waxes. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C". Your 8.5 cm jar is not a CSI listing and has no CSI heat wording: pour at the low end of that range into clean, pre-warmed jars (our judgement). Flat at about half a rupee a gram from 1 kg up.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days from 29 September 2026. A head-to-head poured this week and cured a week can pick its arm by mid-October; the full-life confirmation takes the weeks after. If the pair has already passed, send us your candle count for a quote on C1 in 500 or 1,000, Dark Vanilla and CSI 464 with a GST invoice and dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Never buy edge reach with soot.
A big single that reaches the glass and marks it has not passed. Three candles on one Cotton Braided and three on 2 × C1 tell you whether two smaller flames can do the same work cleanly, for ₹0.20 less a candle in wicks.
"The customer forgives a thin ring on the first burn. They don't forgive a black lid."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, holders and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still says that the first test costs nothing, that the pair is only ₹0.20 a candle cheaper in wicks, that big wick packs save nothing per wick, and that CSI has no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, oil, wax and holder wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The soot grades, pass rule, pair spacing, 0.35 cm wall, 250 g fill and the log figures are our judgement or worked examples; flame heights, pool depths and burn times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance or soot data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Is double wicking better than one big wick for a wide candle?
Often in a jar about 8 cm across or wider, two smaller wicks give smaller, calmer flames and a shallower pool than one large wick, but they can leave wax at the sides. Test both in your jar: three candles each, logged for soot, edge reach and flame height.
Why does my big candle wick produce black smoke?
Common causes are a wick that is too large for the candle, a wick left long or capped with carbon, a draught making the flame flicker, and a heavy fragrance load. Trim to about 5–6 mm and burn in still air first; if the soot stays, test a smaller configuration.
How far apart should two wicks be in an 8.5 cm jar?
As a starting point for testing, space them the inside radius apart on a diameter: about 3.9 cm in a 7.8 cm inside jar, each about 1.95 cm from the wall along their line. Adjust on burn results, not on the starting number.
Does a double wick candle cost more to make?
Not always in wicks. At CSI one Cotton Braided is ₹12.00 and two Eco C1 are ₹11.80. The extra cost of a pair is mostly the time to fix, align and check two wicks, and the holders to set them.
How do I measure candle soot fairly between two test candles?
Trim both to the same length, burn them in the same still room for the same time, and grade the glass from a photo against a white card on a fixed 0–3 scale. Let the worst candle in each arm carry the grade.
Can the fragrance oil cause soot instead of the wick?
It can contribute: heavy, vanillin-rich or resinous oils and higher loads are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick. If both a big single and a pair soot at 8%, retest at a lower load within the oil page's range before blaming the configuration.
Before you buy a bigger wick
One clean re-burn, then three candles a side: ₹1,731.61 of materials.
Trim, still air, one session. If the soot stays, pour three on Cotton Braided and three on 2 × C1, log soot, flame and ring for three burns, and take the clean arm to the last centimetre. Send us the log if the answer isn't obvious.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 8.5–9 cm wide jars (4241–4260). It owns the 8.5 cm head-to-head of one Cotton Braided against two Eco C1 at the same fill: a trim-and-air check first, a three-part log (soot grade, edge reach, flame height), an outcome table and ₹ per candle for each configuration.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (250 g at 8% = 20 g oil + 230 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 250 g fill, 0.35 cm wall, 90 mm jar height, 6 mm base and wax level in the drawing are worked-example assumptions; pool area = π r² on the inside radius; the pair spacing equal to the inside radius is a labelled starting point. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Dark Vanilla 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Flame height (about 2.5–5 cm), pool depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and burn time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. The soot scale, pass rule and log readings are editorial judgement and illustrative. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
