My Candle Fills a Small Bedroom but Disappears in a Large Living Room — How Should Room Size Influence How I Judge Hot Throw?
शेयर करना
Should I raise the load for large rooms? You cannot load your way there. Matching 2.41× the volume by load alone would mean about 19.3% instead of 8%, above the 13% maximum Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated for, and more oil does not raise release proportionally anyway.
What works for large rooms? More pool surface: a wider, correctly wicked vessel, or two or three candles in the room. And honest labelling: rate each candle for the room size it fills in your tests.
How should I test? Burn the same candle in a ladder of rooms (for example 29, 44, 69 and 105 m³) and score each the same way. The largest room with a pass is the candle's rating. See the room ladder.
Measure the room, not the feeling
Makers, customers and reviews all describe throw in relative words: fills the room, barely there, overpowering. Each of those is true only for a particular space. The simplest improvement to any hot-throw judgement is to write down the room it was made in, as length × width × ceiling height, and multiply. Volume is the quantity that matters, because scent spreads through the air of the whole room, and a high ceiling adds air just as a longer floor does.
| Room | Length × width | Ceiling | Floor area | Volume | × the small bedroom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom | 3.0 × 3.3 m | 2.9 m | 9.90 m² | 28.7 m³ | 1.00× |
| Master bedroom | 3.6 × 4.2 m | 2.9 m | 15.12 m² | 43.8 m³ | 1.53× |
| Living room | 5.5 × 4.2 m | 3.0 m | 23.10 m² | 69.3 m³ | 2.41× |
| Open-plan living–dining | 7.0 × 5.0 m | 3.0 m | 35.00 m² | 105.0 m³ | 3.66× |
The spread is larger than it feels when you walk between rooms. The open-plan space holds 3.66 times the air of the small bedroom. If your hot-throw testing happens in a small workshop or bedroom and your customer burns the candle in a living room, you have been judging in the easiest room in the house. That alone explains many "customers say it is weak" complaints; an objective hot-throw method deals with the rest.
Two other room features change the result, even at the same volume. Openings: a room with an open doorway into a corridor or a stairwell shares its air with that space, so its effective volume is larger than its own measurements. Air movement: fans and air conditioning spread scent faster but also dilute it and disturb the flame. Testing with ceiling fans covers that separately. For a room-size comparison, keep doors closed and fans off, so volume is the only thing changing.
Why load cannot scale to the room
Here is a deliberately simple model, labelled as such. Suppose scent mixes evenly through a closed room, and suppose release were proportional to load. To give the 69.3 m³ living room the same concentration the 28.7 m³ bedroom gets from an 8% candle, you would need 2.41 times the release, which the model says is an 19.3% load. Both assumptions flatter the load lever, and it still fails: 19.3% is above the 13% maximum the wax maker states for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and nearly double the 10% stated for CSI 464.
In practice release does not rise in step with load. More oil can crowd the wick, shrink the pool and raise soot, so the curve flattens or even turns down. Why an 8% candle can smell stronger than a 10% one explains that effect, and why a 12% rating is not a 12% recommendation explains why a wax's ceiling is a limit, not a target. The honest conclusion is that a candle designed for a bedroom cannot be turned into a living-room candle with more oil.
| Lever | What it needs | Feasible? |
|---|---|---|
| Load alone | About 19.3% instead of 8% | No: above the 13% and 10% stated maximums, and release does not scale with load |
| Pool surface: one wider vessel | A pool about 10.9 cm across instead of 7 cm (area scales with diameter squared) | Possibly, with a correctly wicked vessel; burn test needed |
| Pool surface: more candles | 2.41 candles' worth, i.e. two or three | Yes, and each candle keeps its tested formula |
| More time | Longer burn before judging | Partly; helps a diffusion-limited room, not an output-limited one |
| Honest rating | Sell it as a bedroom candle | Yes, and it avoids complaints |
The room ladder
The room ladder turns room size from an excuse into a specification. You burn the same candle, cured to the same age, in rooms of increasing volume, score each in the same way, and record the largest room where it passes your standard. That becomes the candle's room rating.
| Room | Volume | Score at 60 min | Pass? | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom | 28.7 m³ | 4 | Yes | Clear from the doorway |
| Master bedroom | 43.8 m³ | 3 | Yes | Clear at centre |
| Living room | 69.3 m³ | 2 | No | Noticeable near the candle only |
| Open-plan living–dining | 105.0 m³ | 1 | No | Faint |
| Rating | up to about 44 m³ | Largest passing room |
Scenting large rooms
If your customers want to scent living rooms and open-plan spaces, change the product, not the formula. The options below keep a tested formula intact and add release through more pool surface.
| Option | What changes | Material cost | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 200 g candle (bedroom rating) | Nothing | ₹241.67 | Rated for the bedroom-sized rooms |
| Two 200 g candles | Twice the pool surface, same formula | ₹483.34 | Place them apart in the room |
| Three 200 g candles | Three times the pool surface | ₹725.00 | For open-plan spaces |
| One 400 g candle in a wider vessel (illustrative) | 32 g oil + 368 g wax | ₹329.94 oil and wax, plus vessel and wick | Needs its own wick test; no three-wick jar is listed at CSI |
Material cost covers oil (₹54.75 of British Rose per 200 g candle at the 100 g rate), wax (₹110.22), wick (₹5.90) and jar (₹70.80). It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. The larger vessel's cost is shown for oil and wax only because a wide single vessel is not a CSI-listed item; the 400 g figure follows this blog's illustrative large-jar convention. CSI does not list three-wick jars, and wick sizing for a wider jar is not published, so a wider vessel means a new burn test. Ask on WhatsApp if you are looking for a wider container.
Pairs and trios are also a product idea in their own right. A "living-room pair" of the same scent, or a trio of complementary scents in one family, gives the customer the release they need without asking one candle to do what it cannot. Keep every candle in the set at its tested formula. If you blend scents across a set, how load applies to a blend sets out the maths.
What to buy
A room ladder uses several identical candles, so oil cost adds up faster than in a single test. British Rose is one of the lowest per-gram oils in the catalogue and one of the few with a real 1 kg break. Dark Vanilla Oud is a richer second option for a premium large-room range. Prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; we publish no throw data for either.

If the candle fails even in the small bedroom, the problem is not room size. Output versus diffusion and the variable checklist are the next reads.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. "Use more oil for big rooms" would sell more oil. On the arithmetic it cannot work within the wax's stated ceiling, so this page recommends more pool surface and honest room ratings instead.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Room volumes are length × width × height from stated illustrative dimensions. Per-candle costs and the shopping-list total are arithmetic on CSI prices.
The even-mixing model is a deliberate simplification to show proportion, not a prediction of any candle. Example scores are made up to show the method. CSI publishes no throw data for any oil. For advice on large-room products, containers or bulk quotes, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Room dimensions are illustrative; volumes are length × width × height (28.71 m³, 43.85 m³, 69.30 m³, 105.00 m³). The even-mixing, release-proportional-to-load model is a simplification used only to show proportion (19.3% equivalent load; 10.9 cm equivalent pool diameter from a 7 cm pool). The 400 g large candle is this blog's illustrative large-jar size; no three-wick jar is listed. Example ladder scores are made up. Load is the share of finished weight. Fragrance ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.
