My Candle Has a Perfect Melt Pool but Produces Black Smoke and Mushrooming — Does That Mean Melt-Pool Diameter Alone Cannot Tell Me Whether the Wick Is Correct?
शेयर करना
What usually causes black smoke and mushrooming at a full pool? In our judgement, most common first: a wick that is too big for the jar and oil, an untrimmed wick or long sessions, a draught making the flame flicker, a heavy oil at the top of its range, and then the wick's construction. The table below says how to tell them apart.
How do I test it? Score the candle on seven criteria, not one: pool diameter, pool depth, flame height, flicker, soot, mushroom and jar heat. Then pour six candles from one pot: two on your current wick, two on a different construction at a similar pool (Cotton Braided), and two one size down (C1), and score them all the same way.
What does it cost? Worked example at 8% in 150 g jars with Pumpkin Spice and CSI 464: ₹1,466.01 of materials for six candles, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. If you already own the oil, wax, jars and your current wick, the new cash is ₹179.00 for ten Cotton Braided and ten C1.

Where the extra heat goes once the pool hits the glass
Think of the wick as a fuel pump and the flame as the engine. A bigger or hungrier wick pumps more melted wax and oil up to the flame each minute. The flame's heat goes into melting more wax, which widens and deepens the pool. In the first hours the pool widens; once it meets the glass, it can only deepen. A wick that is a little too big therefore looks perfect from above on the first burn, while the evidence builds where diameter can't show it: a pool that gets deeper each session, a flame taller than the wick can burn cleanly, a carbon cap on the wick, soot, and more heat in the glass.
Soot is the visible sign of fuel that did not burn completely. A flame burns cleanly when fuel and air are in balance; a wick that delivers more fuel than the flame can burn, or a flame disturbed by a draught, leaves unburned carbon as smoke, as a black ring on the glass, or as a mushroom of carbon on the wick tip. These are tendencies with several contributors (wick size, trim length, air movement, a heavy oil or dye load), which is why a single observation cannot tell you which one it is.
The geometry makes the point in numbers. In a jar with a 7.0 cm internal diameter, a pool that reaches the glass covers about 38.48 cm² (π × r²); in a 6.5 cm jar, about 33.18 cm². Both are "perfect". Neither number changes if the wick grows, because the pool has nowhere left to go. Measure your own jar's internal diameter; the 150 g jar page gives only an outer figure of about 7 cm.
Smoke and mushrooms at a full pool: causes and tells
Ranked most common first. The ranking is editorial judgement; CSI publishes no failure statistics. Each row gives what you can see that rules the cause in or out.
| # | Pattern | Likely cause | Rules it in | Rules it out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pool at the glass early, deepening every session; flame tall from the first hour | Wick too big for this jar and oil | Pool depth well past about 1 cm; one size down stays clean at a full pool | Depth about 0.5–1 cm and a steady flame, yet it still smokes |
| 2 | Clean for 2–3 hours, then a cap forms and smoke starts | Long sessions and an untrimmed wick | Trimmed to the same length before each light, the smoke comes later or not at all | Smokes from the first minutes after a fresh trim |
| 3 | Flame dances and throws smoke in bursts; soot on one side of the glass | Draught, fan, AC vent or a doorway | Same candle in a still corner burns steadily | Smokes in a still, closed room |
| 4 | Worse with one scent than others in the same wick and jar | A heavy oil, or a load at the top of its range | Unscented or lighter-oil twin on the same wick stays clean | Unscented twin smokes as well |
| 5 | Size down leaves a thin, slow pool, but the current size smokes | Wick construction for this jar and oil, not only size | A different construction reaches a similar pool without the carbon | Every construction smokes at a full pool |
| 6 | Only in the lower third of the jar | Heat building with depth | Scores worsen burn by burn down the jar | Smokes from the top |
Rows 2 and 3 cost nothing to rule out and must be ruled out first, because they would spoil the swap. Row 6 belongs to the late-burn cluster: where soot lands at a given depth is soot-band reading, and a mushroom score per burn through the whole jar is the mushroom log. Row 4 has a test of its own in the same post (an unscented control); if the problem began when you changed oil suppliers, the equal-smell, unequal-burn scorecard is the one to read. Rows 1 and 5 are what the swap on this page separates.
The seven-criterion wick scorecard
Score each candle at the end of every session, before you extinguish, on the seven rows below. The descriptors are ours: they turn observations into a 0–3 score so two candles can be compared, not a standard to certify against. Pool times and depths are commonly cited rules of thumb; measure your own jar.
| Criterion | How to read it | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Pool diameter | Look from above at 3 and 4 hours | Liquid to the glass by about 3–4 h | A thin rim of hard wax | A clear wall of hard wax | Tunnelling |
| 2 · Pool depth | Skewer dipped near the wall at the end | About 0.5–1 cm | Just outside that range | Well outside it | Deeper every session |
| 3 · Flame height | Against a ruler held behind the jar, same distance each time | Steady through the session | Grows a little by the end | Grows through the session | Tall enough to approach the glass or lid line |
| 4 · Flicker | In a still, closed room | Still | Occasional | Frequent | Constant dancing |
| 5 · Soot and smoke | Watch the tip for a minute; wipe the rim first, inspect after | No smoke, clean rim | A faint shadow on the rim | Visible wisps | A black smoke trail or soot on glass or lid |
| 6 · Mushroom | The wick tip before you extinguish | None | A small bead | A clear carbon cap | A large cap dropping debris |
| 7 · Jar heat | Non-contact thermometer at a marked spot, 1 h and 3 h; never touch | Coolest arm; flame well clear of the glass | Within a few degrees of the coolest | Clearly hottest arm | Flame near the glass, or rising session on session |
Two things make the scorecard useful rather than decorative. First, the safety rows can veto: a wick that scores 3 on pool and throw but 0 on smoke or heat fails, because those are the rows a customer's home, walls and lid pay for. Second, scores are compared across arms, not against an ideal. Jar heat in particular has no CSI figure to aim at (CSI states no burning temperature limit for any jar, and does not list a non-contact thermometer), so "coolest arm" is the honest way to score it. Without a thermometer, score row 7 from how close the flame and pool run to the glass, and never by hand.
The swap: current wick, braided cotton and one size down
The swap has three arms, two candles each, all from one pot so oil, load, wax, temperatures and cure are identical. Arm C is your current wick (C2 in the worked example): the control. Arm T is the type swap, a braided cotton wick (Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made), chosen because the angle of this page is whether a different construction behaves differently at a similar pool. Arm S is the size check, one step down in your current family (C1). If arm T reaches a pool similar to C's (diameter and depth within a score of each other) its other scores are a fair comparison of construction; if it runs clearly bigger or smaller, the comparison is about size again, and the scorecard will show it.
| Item | Size bought | Used | Cost of what is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin Spice | 100 g, ₹590.00 (₹5.90/g) | 72 g (28 g left) | ₹424.80 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg, ₹507.40 (₹0.51/g) | 828 g (172 g left) | ₹420.13 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | Pack of 10, ₹944.00 | 6 jars | ₹566.40 |
| Wicks: C2, Cotton Braided, C1 | 10 each: ₹94.40, ₹120.00, ₹59.00 | 2 of each | ₹54.68 |
| Six candles, materials | 6 candles, 900 g | ₹1,466.01 |
Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Each 150 g candle at 8% is 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax, load as a percentage of total weight, inside both the oil page's "6-10% for candles" and CSI 464's "Up to 10%". If you already own the oil, wax, jars and C2, the new cash is ₹179.00.
Turning six scorecards into one decision
Average the two candles in each arm, criterion by criterion. If the pair disagree by more than one point on a safety row, run another session before deciding. Then read the pattern across arms.
| What the scorecards show | What it means | Decision | Purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| S clean with a full pool; C smokes | Your wick was too big; the pool hid it | Adopt the smaller size; confirm to the last centimetre | C1 in production packs |
| S clean but pool short; T clean with a pool similar to C | Size alone can't fix it in this jar; construction can | Adopt braided cotton for this jar and oil; confirm to the last centimetre | Cotton Braided; a roll only for large jars |
| S short of the pool, T smokes like C | Neither size nor construction is the driver | Back to trim, draught, load and oil (unscented control) | Nothing |
| All three smoke, even S with a thin pool | Something upstream of the wick: heavy load, oil, dye, or the room | Unscented twin on the same wick; then the oil question (3295) | Nothing yet |
| T clearly bigger pool and hotter than C | Braided cotton is oversized for this jar (the page targets jars over 8 cm) | Discard T as too big here; decide between C and S | Nothing more |
| All clean at the top, smoke begins in the lower third | Heat with depth | Late-burn cluster (soot bands) | Nothing yet |
Throw is deliberately not a row. A wick that smokes can smell stronger (a hotter, bigger pool releases more fragrance) and it can also smell "burnt", which is combustion, not the oil (the cold-strong, hot-faint hub has the evidence-burn method if scent is the worry). Settle the flame first; judge throw on the wick that passes. If the only clean wick leaves a scent you no longer like, that is a new question, and the three-arm step-down in the strong-throw, huge-flame post tests a one-point load increase within the ceiling alongside a smaller wick.
What not to buy for a smoking wick
We sell every wick on this page, and we would still rather you bought ten of the smaller size than a hundred of a bigger one. If you are unsure which arm to add, send us your seven scores; we will not guess a wick size for your jar, but we will tell you which arm the numbers point to.
What the swap needs
Five items: the type-swap wick, its production form, the size-check wick, the trim control and the worked-example oil. Chosen on page statements, price per unit and stock on 26 September 2026; CSI publishes no measured burn or soot data, so nothing here is ranked on performance.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, jars, oils and trimmers named here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our Cotton Braided wick may be too big for a 7 cm jar, that a roll of braided wick is the wrong thing to test with, that the cheapest cutter or a pair of scissors trims as well as our trimmer, and that the smaller wick is often the fix.
Every price and per-unit figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every size in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and the tables are built to flag any size that is not. Load, pour and wick wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
