CSI Soot Diagnosis · Smoke at Two Hours
Visible black smoke two hours in is a symptom, not a verdict. Check the wick at hour two, the air, the load and the oil before the wick size, in that order, and test the answer on four arms of three candles.

Quick answers — read this first
My candle gives off visible black smoke after two hours. Is the wick automatically too large? No. Smoke at two hours means the flame is taking up more fuel than it burns cleanly, and the wick size is only one of five reasons. The usual order of likelihood: the wick has grown or capped by hour two, a draught, a heavy oil or high load, and only then a wick that is too big.

What do I check first? At about two hours, look at the wick: how long it stands, and whether there is a carbon cap. Put the candle out, let it set, trim to 5–6 mm, remove the cap and relight in still air. If it then burns clean past hour two, the cause was wick length or air, not wick size.

When is it the formula? When the cap forms by hour two over a normal-depth pool, and the same wick burns clean with a lighter oil or at a lower load. Test that before buying a single wick.

When is it the wick? When the smoke survives a fresh trim and still air, the pool is deep and the candle burns fast by hour two, and one CSI rung down burns clean in the same formula. Four arms of three candles settle it; from C2 the purchase is the C1 20-pack and a 50 g control oil, ₹330.40.
The short answer
Not automatically: visible smoke at two hours has five common causes. Rule out the free ones (wick length, draught) before the cheap ones (load, oil) and those before the wick.
The five gates, in order: 1, wick length and cap at 2 h; 2, still air; 3, cap against pool depth; 4, the same wick at 6% and with a lighter control oil; 5, pool depth and grams per hour against one CSI rung down.
The test: four arms of three 200 g candles: your formula, your oil at 6%, a light control oil at 8%, and one rung down at 8%. 4-hour sessions in still air after a 5–6 mm trim, burned to the end, every third judged separately.
The honest limit: CSI's tabbed wicks step C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided with no half-sizes; if one rung down tunnels, the fix is usually on the formula side.
Smoke at two hours: five gates before the wick Checked in order, cheapest first. Each gate can end the search. 0 h 1 h 2 h 3 h 4 h visible black smoke trim 5–6 mm check 1:30 Gate 1 · wick at 2 h long or capped? a trim fixes it → length Gate 2 · still air fan, AC, window off stops → draught Gate 3 · cap vs pool big cap, normal pool? yes → oil or load Gate 4 · 6%, light oil same wick either clean → formula Gate 5 · depth and g/h vs one rung down only now → wick size
The two-hour smoke, taken apart in the cheapest order. Gates 1 and 2 cost nothing and are about how the candle is burned. Gates 3 and 4 use the candle you have and one control candle, and they test the formula. Only gate 5 tests wick size, and only gate 5 normally needs a purchase. The exits are where most two-hour smokers are solved; the black box is where a wick change is justified. The sequence is our judgement, not a standard.
Straight answer
My candle produces visible black smoke after two hours. Is the wick automatically too large, or could other formulation variables be responsible?
Not automatically. Black smoke during burning means the flame is drawing more fuel than it can burn completely, and by hour two several things can push it there. The wick may have grown: the wax surface has dropped and the exposed wick is longer, often with a carbon cap that acts like extra wick. The air may have changed: a fan, AC or open window makes the flame flicker, and flickering flames smoke. The formula may be heavy: vanilla-rich, resinous or dark gourmand oils and high loads commonly build carbon on the wick faster, so the cap arrives by hour two. Or the wick is too strong: the pool is deep and the candle is losing wax fast by hour two. Check them in that order. Put the candle out at two hours, let it set, trim to 5–6 mm and remove the cap, then relight in still air. If it stays clean, it was length or air. If a big cap forms again over a normal pool, test the same wick at 6% and with a light control oil. Step down one CSI rung only if the smoke survives all of that and the pool and burn rate say the wick is too strong.
One line: two-hour smoke is a symptom, not a verdict; clear the trim, the air and the formula first, then test one rung down beside your current wick.

Why smoke often starts at about two hours

Nothing in the candle changed at minute 120. Several things changed gradually, and the smoke is where they add up.

In the first hour the wick is freshly trimmed, the pool is forming and the glass is cool. By the second hour the pool has usually reached or nearly reached the glass, the wax surface has dropped a few millimetres, and the wick that stood 5–6 mm above the wax may now stand 10 mm or more if it burns away more slowly than the wax falls. Carbon that the flame does not burn off collects on the tip as a mushroom, and a capped wick behaves like a longer, thicker wick: bigger flame, more fuel, more smoke. The jar and the room have also warmed, and in many homes the fan or AC has been switched on since the candle was lit.

An oversized wick would show the same timing for a different reason: the deepening pool feeds it more and more fuel until it can't burn it all. That is why timing alone can't tell you the cause, and why a fresh trim at hour two is the first test. If trimming at two hours stops the smoke, the wick was growing faster than it burned. That is still information about the wick: a wick that needs a mid-burn trim to stay clean will smoke in customers' homes, because few people trim halfway through an evening. Smokes when long, fine after trimming weighs whether that is over-wicking or maintenance; this page uses it as gate 1.

Safety first, plainly: visible black smoke is a reason to stop the burn, not to watch it. Put the candle out, let it cool and set fully, then trim and remove the cap before relighting; never cut a lit wick or tip a burning candle. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer at marked points (CSI lists none; our Pen Thermometer is for wax). The "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording on our 150 g jar pages is a pour limit, not a burn rating. No change on this page makes a candle "soot-free".

Five causes, ranked: burning versus making

Two causes are how the candle is burned. Three are how it was made. Only one of the three is the wick.

The ranking is our judgement for exactly this pattern (clean at first, visible smoke from about two hours), and it is also the cheapest order to test.

Cause ranking · visible black smoke from about two hours
Ranked by likelihood for this pattern and cost to test (judgement) · signs are common observations, not CSI burn data · ₹ from CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see at two hours Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Wick grown or capped (burning: trimming) Wick standing well above 5–6 mm, a carbon ball on the tip, flame taller than at hour one Out, set, trim to 5–6 mm, cap removed, relight in still air: clean past hour two? Trim before every burn; if it needs a mid-burn trim, treat it as cause 3, 4 or 5 Nothing, or ₹177.00
2. Draught (burning: the room) Flicker, lean, smoke in puffs, soot on one side of the rim Same candle, same trim, fans and AC off and away from windows Placement advice; a wick with margin for fan rooms Nothing
3. Heavy oil (making: fragrance) Cap by hour two over a normal-depth pool; worse in vanilla, coffee, oud or dark gourmand scents Same wick and jar with a light control oil at the same load A per-fragrance wick, or a different oil for that jar ₹212.40 (control oil, 50 g)
4. High load (making: fragrance load) Same signs as cause 3, often after a load increase Same oil and wick at 6% against 8% The lowest load that gives the throw you need, within both ceilings Nothing extra; less oil
5. Wick too strong (making: wick size) Pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour two, fast wax loss, smoke surviving a trim in still air and the control oil Your wick against one CSI rung down, same formula, full life Step down one rung (Cotton Braided → C2 → C1) ₹118.00 (C1 20-pack, from C2)

Causes 3 and 4 are tendencies, not CSI data. No CSI oil page gives soot or wick data in the text we captured. What pages do state is composition in words: Roasted Coffee's page, for example, describes "a warm vanilla and caramel base" and states "candles (6-10%)". Rich bases like that are the kind of oil makers commonly find needs its own wick, and the same pattern has its own posts in this cluster: more soot after 8% to 10%, vanilla soots, lavender doesn't and oud against citrus. Dye is a sixth cause if your candle is coloured; test it the same way, dyed against undyed (the dark-colour post).

Cause 2 deserves more respect than it gets. A ceiling fan on low is enough to make a well-sized flame flicker and puff smoke, and it may be switched on an hour into the evening, which looks exactly like "smoke after two hours". Soots when it flickers, clean when still tests that directly.

The five gates, in order

Each gate either ends the search or tells you which variable to test next.
The five gates · what each result means
Run in order on the candle you have, then on test candles · one variable at a time · limits marked "rule of thumb" are common practice, not standards
Gate How If you see It points to Next
1. Wick at 2 h Trim to 5–6 mm at the start; at 1 h 30 and 2 h, photograph the wick beside a ruler Wick much longer than at the start, or a cap; a fresh trim (after cooling) burns clean past 2 h Wick length or cap Trim policy; but a wick that needs a mid-burn trim goes on to gate 3
2. Still air Same candle, same trim, fans and AC off, away from windows No smoke at 2 h and beyond Draught Placement advice; 6927 for margin
3. Cap vs pool At 2 h: cap width beside a ruler; pool depth with a skewer midway Big cap, pool under about 1 cm Oil or load, not size Gate 4
Small cap, pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm (rule of thumb) Wick power Gate 5
4. Load and oil Same wick: your oil at 6%; a light control oil at 8% Either burns clean past 2 h Formulation Choose load or a per-fragrance wick
5. One rung down Your formula on one CSI rung down beside your current wick Smaller rung clean, pool reaches the glass from burn 2 Wick too strong Approve after full life
Smaller rung tunnels, current smokes No single CSI rung fits A pair, a lower load, or ask us
Gate 1 done properly
At the start: trim to 5–6 mm and photograph the wick beside a ruler. At 1 h 30 and 2 h: photograph again from the same position; don't touch it. At the first smoke: put the candle out (snuffing or dipping the wick avoids blowing hot wax about; CSI lists no snuffer), let it set fully, trim back to 5–6 mm, remove the cap with a trimmer that catches it, and relight. Then watch hours 2 to 4. Clean means length was the trigger. Smoke returns as the wick regrows, usually within the same hour or two, means something is making the wick grow or cap fast: gates 3 to 5.

Gates 1 and 2 use the candle you already have and cost nothing but an evening. Gate 3 is a measurement, not a test, and it sends you either to the formula (gate 4) or straight to the wick (gate 5). Gates 4 and 5 are run together as the four-arm test below, because they need fresh candles and the same cure. If you also want to reproduce the customer's exact two-hour smoke on demand for commercial testing, that test design is 6926's job; here you are finding the cause.

The four-arm test and the approval rule

Four arms, one variable each, the same pour. The clean arm names the cause.

The test uses the series' default test candle, labelled: 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight), and 200 g at 6% = 12 g + 188 g for the lower-load arm, in your jar. Keep your own fill if it differs and scale the grams.

Four arms · three candles each · 12 candles
Same wax, jar, pour temperature and day · only one variable differs from arm A · the arm structure is our judgement
Arm Wick Oil Load What a clean result means
A · control Your current wick Your oil 8% If A is clean in still air with a 5–6 mm trim, the original smoke was burning conditions
B · load Your current wick Your oil 6% Load was tipping the flame over; keep the wick, lower the load
C · oil Your current wick Eucalyptus Spearmint (or any light oil) 8% Your oil needs its own wick, or a lower load
D · wick One CSI rung down Your oil 8% The wick was too strong for this formula
1
Write the limits firstNo visible smoke during burning; a white card held briefly above the flame at hours 2, 3 and 4 no darker than your reference; cap width within the figure you set; pool depth no more than about 1–1.5 cm at hour 4 (rule of thumb); glass under your own limit. In-house limits, not standards.
2
Pour all twelve the same daySame wax lot and pour temperature (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C" and "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", so both loads sit inside its ceiling), wicks centred, jars labelled A1 to D3.
3
Cure togetherEucalyptus Spearmint's page gives 48–72 hours for soy; give every arm the same days, and many makers repeat a burn at day 7 or 14.
4
Burn 4-hour sessions in still air, no mid-burn trimTrim to 5–6 mm only at the start. At hours 1, 2, 3 and 4 log smoke, card, cap, pool depth and flame height; weigh before and after. Stop any candle that smokes continuously and score that session a fail.
5
Burn to about 1 cm from the bottomJudge the top, middle and bottom thirds separately; two-hour smoke that disappears at the top can return lower in the jar, which is the late-jar soot hub's territory.
6
Read the arms, then decidePrefer the smallest change that passes: A (conditions only), then B (less oil), then D (a wick change), then C (an oil change). If only D passes but its pool doesn't reach the glass from burn 2, try a C1 pair or ask us.
The approval rule (ours, labelled)
An arm is approved when all three candles burn 4-hour sessions with no visible smoke at any check and every other written limit met, in the top, middle and bottom thirds, in still air after a single 5–6 mm trim at the start of each session. Needing a mid-burn trim to stay clean is a fail. One smoking session in one candle fails the arm. This is an in-house protocol, not an industry standard; the soot-grading detail is the acceptable-soot post.

The CSI buy list, and the step to production

Our wick range is short, which is one more reason not to start with the wick.

CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. One rung down is Cotton Braided → C2, C2 → C1, or a C2 pair → a C1 pair. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, no smaller sized, tabbed wick than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. A two-hour smoke often needs a smaller correction than a whole rung, which is exactly what arms B and C can give you. If only arm D cleans the smoke and its pool falls short, ask us on WhatsApp; we will say plainly if we have nothing in between.

Argued against our own interest: most two-hour smokers are solved before gate 5, and then you buy no wicks at all, or a ₹177.00 cutter. Eucalyptus Spearmint is a control, not a cure: if your customers want your coffee or vanilla candle, the fix is the right load and wick for that oil, not a different scent. A 15 g bottle (₹68.44) makes 0 candles at 16 g, so it is too small for the arm. At the 1 kg price the same 16 g would be ₹49.09, but nobody should buy a kilo of a control oil.

The step to production quantity

Production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 180 single-wick candles a month with a 5% allowance is 189 wicks. If arm D passes, buy C1 as 100 + 50 + 20 + 20 = 190 for ₹1,121.00. If arm B passes, your wick stays: 190 C2 wicks are ₹1,793.60, and the 2-point load cut saves about 0.72 kg of oil a month. C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack, so the 500-pack only ties up cash. Stepping C2 → C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle, never the reason to do it. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. If you later change wick lot or supplier, rerun arm A and the approved arm on one candle each before mixing lots.

Don't wick down on the first smoky evening. If the smoke came from a 12 mm wick with a cap or a fan switched on at 8 pm, a smaller wick will tunnel and the next fan will still make it smoke. Don't fix it with a mid-burn trim instruction either: "trim after two hours" on a label means the candle smokes for anyone who doesn't. And don't buy 1,000 wicks after one clean arm: the 1,000-packs (₹5,900.00 C1, ₹9,440.00 C2, ₹12,000.00 Cotton Braided) carry no per-wick saving.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. Gates 1 and 2 take two evenings; the four-arm test (a 3-day cure, then about seven daily 4-hour sessions) about 10 days. Festive evenings mean long burns and fans on: if your Diwali candles smoke at two hours, start this week and send us your production count on WhatsApp for stock, dispatch and a GST invoice.

What to buy, and what to skip

Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
Gate 4 asks whether the oil is part of the smoke, and the cleanest way to ask is to burn the same wick with a different oil. This page describes "crisp eucalyptus with cool spearmint", states "Recommended fragrance load up to 10% for soy wax" and says "No vanillin - zero risk of discoloration" (the page's claim about colour; it says nothing about soot). Fresh, herbal oils commonly build less carbon than vanilla-rich or dark gourmand oils, a tendency, not CSI data. Three control candles at 16 g need 48 g, so the 50 g bottle does it with 2 g to spare (₹67.97 of oil a candle). Argued against our own interest: any light oil you already own works as the control; buy this only if you have none.

Candle Wick Trimmer | Candle Wick Cutter
Gate 1 is a mid-burn look at the wick at about two hours: how long it stands and whether a carbon cap has formed. The Candle Wick Trimmer has a debris catcher, so the cap comes out instead of dropping into the pool, and its page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn" and "Perfect Length: Ensures optimal flame height" (the page's claim). Put the candle out and let it cool before you trim; never cut a lit wick. Argued against our own interest: the ₹177.00 cutter is enough for the start-of-burn trim, and scissors that reach the wick are enough for a home test.

Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
Only after gates 1 to 4 do you need a smaller wick. In the text we captured, the page states no length, width or jar-diameter range, and its "minimal soot or smoke" line is a claim about a correctly sized wick, not a promise about yours at hour two. C1 is ₹5.90 and C2 ₹9.44 a wick at every pack. Argued against our own interest: arm D needs three wicks; the C1 20-pack (₹118.00) is the smallest C1 pack in stock and no bigger pack is cheaper per wick. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
If your smoking candle is on this wick, check its page against your jar: "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", with "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm" and the claim "optimal flame height, preventing tunneling". In a jar of 8 cm or less, gate 5 is likely to point down, and C2 is the rung for arm D. ₹12.00 a wick at every pack. Limitation: there is no tabbed size between Cotton Braided and C2, so if C2 tunnels and this one smokes, try a pair or the formula side before assuming a wick we don't sell exists.

Skip for now: any 500- or 1,000-pack; a new wax "that burns cleaner" while the cause is open; a kilo of the control oil; and a second wick rung beyond arm D until arm D has finished its full life. For a longer view of oils that keep throw while burning cleanly, the coffee-soot-at-three-hours post is the deeper read.

The CSI principle
Smoke tells you the flame is overfed. It doesn't tell you what is feeding it.
Trim and still air first, then load and oil, then one CSI rung down: four arms, three candles each, to the end. From C2 the purchase is ₹330.40.
"A wick that only burns clean if you trim it at hour two isn't clean. It's supervised."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oils, wax and tools named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that most two-hour smokers need no new wick, that any light oil you own will do as a control, that our bigger wick packs cost no less per wick, and that our range has no half-sizes and one wooden width.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including Eucalyptus Spearmint's "No vanillin - zero risk of discoloration" (a colour claim, not a soot claim), Roasted Coffee's "warm vanilla and caramel base" and the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke".

The trim length, pool-depth band and 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The gate order, arm design, approval rule and production figures are labelled judgement or examples. Fragrance effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Usually the wick has grown or capped with carbon as the wax dropped, or a fan or AC has started a draught; less often a heavy oil, a high load or a wick too big for the jar. Put it out, trim to 5–6 mm and relight in still air to find out which.
Does black smoke mean the wick is too big?
Not necessarily. Black smoke means the flame is drawing more fuel than it burns cleanly. A long wick, a draught or a heavy fragrance can do that with a correctly sized wick. It is the wick only if the smoke survives a fresh trim, still air and a lighter oil, and the pool is deep and burning fast.
Can fragrance oil make a candle smoke?
It can contribute. Vanilla-rich, resinous and dark gourmand oils and higher loads commonly build carbon on the wick faster. Test your oil against a light oil, and at 6% against 8%, on the same wick.
Should I trim my candle wick during a burn?
Only after putting it out and letting it set; never trim a lit wick. If a candle needs trimming mid-burn to stop smoking, treat that as a sign the wick, oil or load needs changing, because customers won't do it.
How do I stop my candle from smoking?
Trim to 5–6 mm before every burn, burn in still air, and keep sessions to about four hours. If it still smokes, test a lower load and a lighter oil on the same wick, then one wick size smaller, three candles each.
What is one wick size smaller than C2?
At CSI, Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1): the 20-pack is ₹118.00 (₹5.90 a wick); the 10-pack is out of stock on 7 October 2026. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2; ask us on WhatsApp if you need a finer step.
Black smoke after two hours
Trim, still the air, test the load and a control oil, then one CSI rung down: four arms, three candles each.
From C2 the purchase is the C1 20-pack and a 50 g control oil, ₹330.40. If the smoke survives every gate and C1 tunnels, tell us on WhatsApp and we will say plainly what we stock between C1 and C2, and what we don't.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster "Black Smoke & Soot on the Jar" (6921–6940) in the series on large flames, soot, smoke, mushrooming and wick purchase. It answers whether visible black smoke after two hours automatically means an oversized wick, with a cause ranking, five ordered gates, a four-arm test with an in-house approval rule, a CSI buy list and a production step.

Non-price figures: "visible black smoke" and "after two hours" are the reader's description (title). The 200 g test candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax) and the 6% arm (12 + 188 g), load as a percentage of total weight, are labelled; wax ceiling as the page states (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%), a formulation limit, not a regulatory one; Eucalyptus Spearmint's page states up to 10% for soy. Trim length 5–6 mm (one trimmer page says 1/4 inch), pool depth about 1–1.5 cm, the 1 cm wax floor and four-hour sessions are common rules of thumb. The gate order, arm design, approval rule, 180 candles a month and the 5% allowance are labelled judgement or worked examples. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
