₹33.11
worked true premium per candle, wooden wick (100s) over Eco C2 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much more does a wooden wick cost than cotton? At CSI prices on 4 October 2026, a Performance Wooden Wick is ₹41.30 in packs of 100, ₹47.20 in 50s and ₹59.00 in 10s, against ₹9.44 for an Eco C2 and ₹12.00 for Cotton Braided. That is ₹31.86 to ₹49.56 more per candle than C2. Add worked labour and the true premium is about ₹33.11 a candle, ₹99,330.00 a year at 250 candles a month.

How do I know if customers value it? Offer both, priced apart. List a wooden-wick and a cotton-wick version of the same candle (worked: ₹649.00 and ₹599.00), track which one buyers pick, and check complaints and returns for each. Every buyer who picks wood at the higher price earns you ₹18.14 more than a cotton buyer.

What is the decision rule? Keep the wooden wick if buyers pay at least the true premium for it (₹33.11 a candle, ₹38.95 after a worked 15% fee) or if dropping it would cost more than 8.4% of your sales. Otherwise move to cotton.

Is burn performance part of this test? No. Whether the wooden wick burns reliably in your jar, wax and scent is a separate full-life burn test; run it first, because a wick buyers love but that keeps going out is not worth any price.
The short answer
Premium: wooden over Eco C2 is ₹31.86 (100s), ₹37.76 (50s) or ₹49.56 (10s) per candle; over Cotton Braided, ₹29.30 to ₹47.00.
Worked candle: COGS ₹299.58 with wood, ₹267.72 with C2; the wooden wick is 13.8% of COGS against 3.5% for C2.
Rule: keep wood only if buyers pay ₹38.95 or more for it (worked fee included), or if losing it would cost over 8.4% of sales.
The gate: burn test first (wood and cotton in the same jar and scent, full life), then the value test with both variants listed.

Wick cost per candle at CSI prices. Eco C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack; Performance Wooden Wicks fall from ₹59.00 to ₹41.30 as the pack grows. Below the ladder: what a wooden wick has to earn per candle once labour and fees are counted (worked).
Straight answer
My candle uses a wooden wick that costs more than cotton. How do I determine whether customers value it enough to justify the additional cost?
Put a number on the premium, then let buyers choose. At CSI prices the wooden wick costs ₹31.86 more than an Eco C2 per candle when bought in 100s (more in smaller packs), and with a worked 30 seconds of extra setting time the true premium is ₹33.11. The cleanest test is to list the same candle twice, wooden at your current price (worked ₹649.00) and cotton about ₹50.00 lower (worked ₹599.00), for four to six weeks. If a solid share of buyers pick wood at the higher price, it is paying for itself: each one earns ₹18.14 more than a cotton buyer. If almost nobody does, or wooden-wick candles draw more "won't stay lit" complaints, move to cotton. Before any of that, the wooden wick has to pass a full-life burn test in your jar, wax and scent; customer preference cannot rescue a wick that tunnels or goes out.
One line: list wood and cotton side by side, priced apart, and let buyers' choices set the premium.
Setting up the comparison? One 10-pack of Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00) and one of Eco C2 (₹94.40) cover a 9-candle burn test of each. Do not buy the 100-pack until the wooden wick has passed in every scent you will use it in.

The real premium per candle

The wick is the smallest line in most candles. A wooden one is not.

Here is a worked 200 g candle with a wooden wick, built on CSI prices where we sell the item: 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and 16 g of Woody Oud (8% of total weight; the oil page states "candles (6-10%)" and the wax page "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"). The jar and label are worked examples: use your own, not CSI prices.

Wax: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 184 g ₹5,074.00 per 10 kg ₹93.36 31.2%
Fragrance: Woody Oud 16 g (8%) ₹4,531.20 per kg ₹72.50 24.2%

Label (yours) 1 ₹5.00 (worked) ₹5.00 1.7%
COGS ₹299.58 100.1%

Swap the wooden wick for an Eco C2 and COGS falls to ₹267.72; the wick drops from 13.8% of COGS to 3.5%. At a worked ₹649.00 the material margin goes from ₹349.42 to ₹381.28. That ₹31.86 gap is the price the wooden wick asks your customer to pay, and it is the smallest version of it. In packs of 10 the gap is ₹49.56; in 50s, ₹37.76. Moving from 10s to 100s alone saves ₹17.70 a candle, which is why many makers who keep wood buy it in 100s once it is approved.

Costs the invoice does not show

Two more lines belong in the premium. Setting time: a wooden wick goes into a clip and tab and needs trimming to height before it is sold; at a worked 30 seconds more per candle than a pre-tabbed C2 and ₹150.00 an hour, that is ₹1.25 a candle. Time your own bench. Complaints: wooden wicks are commonly reported to be more sensitive to pool depth and trimming, and a candle that goes out is a candle that comes back. At a worked 2% extra complaints and ₹60.00 to reship, a replacement allowance adds ₹7.19 a candle (2% × COGS plus courier). Track your own rate rather than using ours.

If your cotton comparison is Cotton Braided, not C2. In a wider jar where an Eco C2 cannot reach the edge, the honest comparison is wood against Cotton Braided, whose page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". The gap is smaller: ₹29.30 a candle in 100s, so with the same worked labour the true premium is ₹30.55. Run the uplift and test maths below with whichever cotton wick actually passes your burn test in that jar; a premium measured against a cotton wick that would never be used is not a real number.

The price uplift a wooden wick needs

If buyers will not pay the premium, you are paying it for them.

Two ways to read the same number. As a price: a wooden-wick candle has to sell for at least the true premium more than the cotton version would, ₹33.11 at the worked figures. If your platform takes a percentage of the price (a worked 15% for marketplace and payment fees), the uplift has to be grossed up: ₹33.11 ÷ 0.85 = ₹38.95. As volume: if you keep one price (₹649.00) and drop wood for cotton, the margin per candle rises from ₹349.42 to ₹381.28. You would have to lose more than 8.4% of sales for the switch to cost you money. Put the other way, the wooden wick must be bringing in at least 9.1% more buyers than a cotton candle would at the same price.

How you present the gap matters as much as its size. A wooden-wick variant named only "wooden wick" asks the buyer to guess why it costs more; one described plainly ("wooden wick with a soft crackle as it burns; trim before each burn") tells them what they are paying for and how to look after it. Describe what the buyer will notice, not burn claims you have not measured: the page lists "Clean burning" and "Long burning" as benefits, but those are the page's words, not results from your jar. Keep photographs identical apart from the wick, so the buyer's choice is about the wick and not about a better photo.

That frames the test. Most makers believe the wooden wick sells the candle; few have checked. A 8.4% sales effect is not small. It is the size of effect you can see in a few weeks of side-by-side listings, so you can find out rather than guess.

Mistake: justifying the wooden wick with the bulk price. Why it fails: buying 100s brings the premium down from ₹49.56 to ₹31.86, but it is still a premium, and buying 100s before the wick has passed in every scent risks a box of wicks you cannot use. Fix: price the decision at the pack you will really buy, and only move up a pack after both the burn test and the value test pass. Argued against our own interest: if your volume is low enough that you only ever buy 10s, the premium is ₹49.56 a candle; at that level many makers find cotton is the better business.

How to test whether customers value it

Customers rarely tell you what they value. They show you with what they buy.

The general method for testing what customers notice (panels, A/B photos, returns tracking) is the customer-perception test post. For a wooden wick the most useful design is a choice test, because it measures willingness to pay directly.

Design: one candle, two wick variants

List the same scent, jar and fill as two variants: wooden wick at ₹649.00, cotton wick at ₹599.00 (a worked ₹50.00 gap, a little above the ₹38.95 uplift needed). Each wooden-wick sale earns ₹349.42; each cotton sale ₹331.28. So every buyer who picks wood earns you ₹18.14 more, and the share who pick it tells you what the wick is worth to your customers.

Monthly material margin by share choosing wood · worked, 250 candles a month
Wood at ₹649.00 (₹349.42 a candle) · cotton at ₹599.00 (₹331.28 a candle) · total volume assumed unchanged
Share choosing wood Monthly margin Against all-cotton at ₹599.00
0% (all cotton) ₹82,820.00 —
20% ₹83,727.00 ₹907.00
40% ₹84,634.00 ₹1,814.00
60% ₹85,541.00 ₹2,721.00
100% (all wood) ₹87,355.00 ₹4,535.00

Read the table with care. It assumes total volume stays at 250; the real question the test answers is whether offering cotton at a lower price brings in buyers you were losing, or whether wood was what sold the candle. Watch three things: share choosing wood, total sales against the weeks before, and complaints per variant.

Three more signals worth tracking

Review and message mining: count how many reviews and DMs mention the crackle or the wooden wick unprompted over the last few months. The wick page describes "Crackling fireplace ambiance" as a benefit; whether your buyers mention it is the test. Return and complaint reasons: tag every complaint by cause; "won't stay lit", "flame too small" and "tunnelling" are the wooden-wick ones to watch. Repeat buyers: if the wooden-wick candle has a higher repeat rate than your cotton candles, that is value the choice test can miss in four weeks.

1
Pass the burn test firstWood and cotton in the same jar, wax, scent and load, three candles each, burned to about 1 cm left. If wood fails, stop here.
2
Set the pass mark before launchFor example: keep wood if at least 30% of buyers choose it at the higher price and its complaint rate is no worse than cotton’s. Write it down.
3
List both variants for four to six weeksSame photos, same description, wick named clearly in the variant: wooden at ₹649.00, cotton at ₹599.00.
4
Tag every complaint by variant and causeSeparate wick complaints from scent or shipping ones so they do not blur the result.
5
Decide, then act on stockIf wood passes, keep both or move everyone to wood and buy 100s. If it fails, run the wooden stock down on the gift line and move the range to cotton.

Cost of the test, worked: 18 burn-test candles (three scents × two wick types × three candles) at about ₹230.86 of wax, oil and jar each, plus one 10-pack of wooden wicks (₹590.00) and one of C2 (₹94.40), come to ₹4,771.44; with ₹2,500.00 of photos for the second variant, ₹7,271.44 in all. Against a ₹99,330.00 a year premium it is cheap to find out.

Where a wooden wick usually pays, and where it does not

The same wick can be good business on one candle and a leak on the next.

The premium is fixed in rupees, so it weighs very differently on different candles. On a worked ₹949.00 gift candle the true premium of ₹33.11 is 3.5% of the price; on a worked ₹449.00 everyday candle it is 7.4%. A buyer spending ₹949.00 on a gift is paying for the whole experience, and a crackling wooden wick is easy to fold into it. A buyer choosing between two ₹449.00 candles on a marketplace is comparing scents and prices, and the wick has to win on its own.

Volume and pack size change it again. A small maker buying 10s pays the full ₹49.56 gap; a larger one buying 100s pays ₹31.86. The annual bill climbs with volume even though the per-candle premium falls:

Wooden-wick premium over Eco C2 by volume · wick price only
Pack you would realistically buy at each volume · labour, fees and complaints not included · volumes are worked examples
Candles a month Pack bought Premium per candle Per month Per year
60 Pack of 10 ₹49.56 ₹2,973.60 ₹35,683.20
250 Pack of 100 ₹31.86 ₹7,965.00 ₹95,580.00
1,000 Pack of 100 ₹31.86 ₹31,860.00 ₹3,82,320.00

Three patterns come out of this, all judgement rather than data. Wood tends to pay on gift and premium SKUs where the price carries it, on candles photographed and sold on the crackle, and where your buyers already mention the wick in reviews. Wood tends not to pay on everyday candles at price points where buyers compare like for like, on high-volume lines where the annual premium becomes a large number, and on scents where the wooden wick needed extra testing or still draws complaints. Split ranges work: many makers keep wood on a premium edition and run cotton on the everyday range, which keeps the look where it is valued and the margin where it is needed.

Burn performance is a separate gate

This page is about money and customers. Whether a wooden wick burns as reliably as cotton in your formula is a different question, and it comes first: how to test wooden wicks against cotton in your formula, and how to weigh a cotton wick's hot throw against a wooden wick's look is the cotton-throw versus wooden-look trade-off. Switching from wood to cotton, or back, is a wick change: it can change the melt pool, flame and late-burn heat, so it needs a full-life bracket, not a single burn. What to retest is the wick-change retest list; whether the fragrance load can stay the same when you move between cotton and wood is the cotton-to-wooden load post.

One behaviour to know before you start: wooden wicks are commonly reported to self-extinguish as the pool deepens later in the candle's life, which a short test misses (why wooden wicks go out later in the burn). That is exactly the failure that turns a premium into complaints, so burn to the end.

Keep the rest of the candle identical
When you compare wood with cotton, change only the wick: same wax lot, same oil lot, same load, same jar batch, same pour and cure. If the cotton candle needs a different load to perform, that is a second change, and the money in this post stops being comparable. Cutting the load to make a smaller wick work is the lower-load wick-saving post.

CSI wicks, honestly

We sell both wicks. The cheaper one makes us less money, and it may be your answer.

One wooden listing, no widths. Performance Wooden Wicks is the only wooden wick in our catalogue on 4 October 2026, sold in packs of 10, 50 and 100 with tabs included. If your burn test says the wick is too narrow or too wide for your jar, we have no other wooden width to step to; ask on WhatsApp whether one is coming, and do not stretch a wick that does not fit. The listing's "Save 25%" and "Save 30%" labels work out to 20% and 30% per wick against the 10-pack.

Cotton is flat. Eco C1 (₹5.90), Eco C2 (₹9.44) and Cotton Braided (₹12.00) cost the same per wick at every pack. Buying 1,000 C2 instead of 100 saves nothing per candle, so buy what the month needs.

Argued against our own interest: we would sell more wooden wicks if you kept them. If your value test shows buyers will not pay ₹38.95 more, switch to cotton: our C2 at ₹9.44 earns us a fraction of the wooden wick, and that is fine. And if you want wood only for the look on a few premium SKUs, keep it there and run cotton everywhere else; a split wick system costs a little more in testing, which the wax-and-wick combination post prices from the wax side.

If your wooden-wick candle is also a double-wick candle, or you are considering one larger wick instead of two, that is the two-wicks-to-one post. Where wick, jar and packaging savings sit together without making the candle look cheaper is the cluster guardrails post, and how a jar budget is set is the jar-budget hub.

This is for you if: your wooden-wick candle sells steadily, you have never tested a cotton version, and the wick is a visible line in your COGS. Wait if: the wooden wick is the brand (it is in your name, your photos and your reviews); there, test price before you test removal.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five CSI items for a wood-versus-cotton decision, chosen on page statements, price ladders and stock on 4 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick burn data; nothing is ranked on performance.

1
wick · the wooden option
Performance Wooden Wicks (Imported)
CSI's only wooden wick: one listing, no width options. The page says "One Pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs" and lists "Crackling fireplace ambiance", "Clean burning" and "Long burning" as benefits (page wording, not CSI test data). It is the only tabbed wick we sell that gets cheaper per wick in bigger packs: ₹59.00 in 10s, ₹47.20 in 50s, ₹41.30 in 100s. The listing says "Save 25%" and "Save 30%"; per wick the real saving is 20% and 30%. Limitation: if your test shows you need a wider or narrower wooden wick, we do not list one; ask on WhatsApp.

Pack of 50 ₹2,360.00 ₹47.20 ₹37.76
Pack of 100 ₹4,130.00 ₹41.30 ₹31.86

2
wick · the cotton baseline
Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2)
Pre-tabbed; the page describes wicks "crafted from natural fibers like cotton and paper" and states no length or jar-diameter range. Flat ₹9.44 a wick from 10 to 1,000, so the bigger pack saves nothing per wick: buy what the test or the month needs. If the wooden wick does not earn its premium, this is the usual first rung to test against it (with C1 and Cotton Braided either side).
Pack Price Per wick Note
10 ₹94.40 ₹9.44 flat
100 ₹944.00 ₹9.44 flat
1,000 ₹9,440.00 ₹9.44 flat

3
wick · the heavier cotton rung
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The page says they are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and gives the wick height as 10.16 cm. ₹12.00 a wick at every pack, ₹29.30 less than a wooden wick in 100s. For a wide jar where C2 is too small, it is the cotton comparison to run against wood. Burn behaviour is your test result, not a page claim.
Pack Price Per wick Note
10 ₹120.00 ₹12.00 flat
100 ₹1,200.00 ₹12.00 flat
1,000 ₹12,000.00 ₹12.00 flat
₹12.00 a wick, flat. Buy 10 — ₹120.00
4
fragrance · woody, at 8% in the worked candle
Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
A woody scent that suits a wooden-wick story, used in the worked BOM. The page states "candles (6-10%)". From 100 g it is flat at ₹4.53 a gram, so 500 g and 1 kg cost the same per gram as 100 g: buy for the month, not for a discount. Heavy, resinous oils can change how any wick burns (a tendency, not a rule), so test the wooden wick in this scent specifically.
Size Price Per gram 200 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹93.22 ₹6.21/g 0
50 g ₹271.40 ₹5.43/g 3
100 g ₹453.12 ₹4.53/g 6
500 g ₹2,265.60 ₹4.53/g 31
1 kg ₹4,531.20 ₹4.53/g 62
₹72.50 of oil per 200 g candle at 8%. Buy 100 g — ₹453.12
5
wax · the worked container wax
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (flakes)
Used for the worked BOM: the page states pour temperature 80°C–90°C and "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". Flat per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg (₹507.40 a kilo either way), so the 10 kg pack saves nothing per candle over ten 1 kg packs. Changing wick type in this wax is a wick change: run the full-life comparison before you switch.
Pack Price Per kg 200 g candles (184 g wax)
500 g ₹260.00 ₹520.00 2
1 kg ₹507.40 ₹507.40 5
5 kg ₹2,537.00 ₹507.40 27
10 kg ₹5,074.00 ₹507.40 54
₹93.36 of wax per 200 g candle. Buy 1 kg — ₹507.40

Skip for this decision: the 100-pack of wooden wicks before both tests pass, and large cotton packs bought for a per-wick saving that is not on the ladder.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 35 days from 4 October 2026. Too close to finish a full-life burn test and a four-week value test before the festive peak. The CSI principle
A premium component is worth what buyers pay for it, not what it costs you.
On the worked candle the wooden wick needs ₹38.95 of price to pay its way. List it beside cotton and let the share who choose it decide.
"If you have never sold the cotton version, you do not know whether the wooden wick sells your candle. You only know it costs more."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both wooden and cotton wicks and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our cotton wicks earn us far less per candle than the wooden wick, that we list only one wooden width, and that you should switch to cotton if your buyers do not pay for wood.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, with stock checked per listing; the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date (C1 is buyable from 20). Product wording is quoted from the pages and attributed; CSI has no measured burn or throw data for any wick.

The jar and label prices, 250 candles a month, the ₹649.00 and ₹599.00 prices, the 30-second labour difference at ₹150.00 an hour, the 15% fee, the 2% complaint rate and ₹60.00 reship cost, and the 30% pass mark are labelled worked examples. Frequently asked questions

Are wooden wicks worth the extra cost in candles?
Only if buyers pay for them. At CSI prices a wooden wick costs ₹31.86 to ₹49.56 more than an Eco C2 per candle; with labour, the worked premium is ₹33.11. Test with a wooden and a cotton variant listed side by side.
How much more do wooden wicks cost than cotton wicks per candle?
Performance Wooden Wicks are ₹41.30 (100s), ₹47.20 (50s) or ₹59.00 (10s) a wick; Eco C2 is ₹9.44 and Cotton Braided ₹12.00 at every pack. The gap over C2 is ₹31.86 to ₹49.56.
How much should I charge extra for a wooden wick candle?
At least the true premium: ₹33.11 a candle on the worked figures, or ₹38.95 if your platform takes a worked 15% of the price. Many makers round the gap up (worked ₹50.00) and let buyers choose.
Do customers really prefer wooden wick candles?
Some do, some never notice. Your own buyers answer it: offer both variants priced apart, track the share choosing wood, and tag complaints by wick type.
Can I switch from a wooden wick to a cotton wick without retesting?
No. It is a wick change: run wood and cotton in the same jar, wax, scent and load, three candles each, to about 1 cm left, and check melt pool, flame and late-burn heat before switching.
Does CSI sell different sizes of wooden wick?
Not on 4 October 2026: Performance Wooden Wicks is one listing with no width options, in packs of 10, 50 and 100 with tabs. Ask on WhatsApp if your test needs another width.
Wooden wick · worth it?

On the worked candle the wooden wick needs ₹38.95 more on the price to pay its way after fees; its true premium is ₹99,330.00 a year at 250 candles a month. Start with one 10-pack of each.

About this guide: part of CSI's series on candle cost reduction and raw-material optimisation, cluster 6061–6080. It prices a wooden wick against cotton at CSI pack prices, adds the costs the invoice does not show, turns the premium into a required price uplift and a break-even sales effect, and sets out a side-by-side variant test, with burn performance as a separate gate.
