My Wide Jar Requires Two Wicks — Would Moving to a Slightly Narrower Container Reduce Both Jar and Wick Cost Without Reducing Fill Weight?
Share
Does the fill weight stay the same? Yes, if the jar is tall enough. The same 300 g in a 7.5 cm jar sits 1.44 times as deep as in a 9.0 cm jar, about 7.5–7.9 cm by the ml-to-gram rule of thumb, so the jar needs at least 9.4 cm of inside height with 1.5 cm headspace. Weigh a test pour.
What could go wrong? One wick in a deeper column of wax has to reach the wall on every burn, and the narrower jar has 30.6% less melt-pool surface, which can mean less scent released at a time. Late-burn heat, centring and the shipper box all need checking.
Can CSI supply the narrower jar? Probably not as a saving. CSI lists no jar at 7.5 cm or 9 cm; its narrow 300 g listing, the Green Iridescent jar (7 cm, 10 cm tall), is ₹150.00, more than the worked wide jar. The narrower jar is usually your own supplier's.
Same fill, narrower jar: the geometry
For a straight-sided jar, the volume of a candle is its surface area times its depth. Keep the weight the same, shrink the area, and the depth grows in exact proportion. Surface area uses the inside diameter (π r²); the figures below are worked examples, so measure your own jars at two or three heights.
| Jar | Inside diameter | Surface area | Fill depth for 300 g | Inside height needed (+1.5 cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wide (yours today) | 9.0 cm | 63.62 cm² | 5.2–5.5 cm | 7.0 cm |
| Narrower (candidate) | 7.5 cm | 44.18 cm² | 7.5–7.9 cm | 9.4 cm |
| Ratio | 30.6% less | 1.44 × deeper |
That last column is the first filter. A 7.5 cm jar that is only 8 or 9 cm tall inside will not take 300 g with sensible headspace, however good its price. Listing capacities are often to the brim, and many listings do not say which: fill to your line, not the brim. The headspace figure of 1.5 cm is a common rule of thumb for lid clearance and flame room; measure yours. The full ml-to-gram method is in the container series: why two 200 ml jars can hold different amounts, what size jar a 200 g candle really needs and how much space to leave below the lid.
How narrow is "slightly" narrower?
Small changes in diameter make large changes in area, because area goes with the square. Here is the same 300 g fill at four inside diameters against today's 9.0 cm:
| Inside diameter | Surface area | Surface lost | Depth vs 9.0 cm | Inside height needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 cm | 56.75 cm² | 10.8% | 1.12 × | 7.6 cm |
| 8.0 cm | 50.27 cm² | 21.0% | 1.27 × | 8.4 cm |
| 7.5 cm | 44.18 cm² | 30.6% | 1.44 × | 9.4 cm |
| 7.0 cm | 38.48 cm² | 39.5% | 1.65 × | 10.6 cm |
A half-centimetre step (to 8.5 cm) loses about a tenth of the surface; that may not be enough for one wick to replace two, and the jar may cost the same. A step to 7 cm loses about two-fifths, demands a jar about 10.6 cm tall inside, and starts to feel like a different product on the shelf. The worked 7.5 cm sits between them. Many makers find the useful band is the one where a single wick has a realistic chance in their wax, which only a bracket can show; the table just tells you which jars are physically able to hold the candle.
Tapered jars change the arithmetic: the area changes with height, so the depth for the same fill is not a simple ratio and the wick sees a different diameter as the candle burns down. If your candidate jar tapers, measure the inside diameter at the top, middle and base, and weigh a test pour rather than calculating.
The cost before and after
The worked candle: 300 g at 8% (24 g of oil, 276 g of wax, load as a share of total weight) in Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 with Jasmine. Jasmine's page states "Recommended load up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin" and the wax page "Fragrance Load Up to 13%", so 8% sits inside both. Jar prices and the label are worked examples: use your own; they are not CSI prices and say nothing about any supplier.
| Line | Wide · ₹ | Wide · % | Narrow · ₹ | Narrow · % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax: 276 g CSI 468 | ₹175.81 | 40.3% | ₹175.81 | 44.0% |
| Fragrance: 24 g Jasmine | ₹94.15 | 21.6% | ₹94.15 | 23.6% |
| Wicks | ₹18.88 (two C2) | 4.3% | ₹9.44 (one C2) | 2.4% |
| Wick stickers | ₹5.00 | 1.1% | ₹2.50 | 0.6% |
| Jar (yours) | ₹110.00 | 25.2% | ₹85.00 | 21.3% |
| Shipper: Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 inch | ₹26.72 | 6.1% | ₹26.72 | 6.7% |
| Label (yours) | ₹6.00 | 1.4% | ₹6.00 | 1.5% |
| COGS | ₹436.56 | 100.0% | ₹399.62 | 100.1% |
Add the ₹0.83 of placing time you no longer spend on a second wick (worked: 20 seconds at ₹150.00 an hour) and the saving is ₹37.77 a candle: ₹11,331.00 a month and ₹1,35,972.00 a year at 300 candles a month. If the bracket says you need one Cotton Braided rather than one C2, it is ₹35.21 (₹10,563.00 a month). The wick side alone is worth ₹3,832.00 a month; the rest is jar.
| Narrow jar price | Jar difference | Total per candle |
|---|---|---|
| ₹85.00 (worked case) | saves ₹25.00 | saves ₹37.77 |
| ₹110.00 (same as wide) | nothing | saves ₹12.77 (wick side only) |
| ₹130.00 (dearer) | costs ₹20.00 more | costs ₹7.23 more |
The middle row is the honest test of the idea. If the narrower jar costs the same, you are taking on a new container, a new wick system and a full retest for ₹12.77 a candle. That can still be worth it at volume, but it is the same order of saving as the two-wicks-to-one question on its own (the two-wicks-to-one post), with more work attached. If the narrower jar is dearer, the switch costs money unless something else improves.
New burn and heat risks
Changing the jar is a formulation change even with the same wax, oil and load, and here two things change at once: diameter and wick count. The common risks, as tendencies to test rather than predictions:
Reach to the wall. One wick in 7.5 cm has to melt 44.18 cm² that two wicks shared in the old jar's 63.62 cm²; it may manage, or it may tunnel. Depth. The candle is about 1.44 times as deep, so there are more burns for things to drift: pools commonly deepen and flames grow as the wax level falls and the glass above it absorbs heat. Late heat. In the last third the flame sits lower in a narrower glass, closer to the walls; check glass heat by observation or a non-contact thermometer, never by touch (CSI lists no non-contact thermometer). Centring. In a narrower jar a wick that leans a few millimetres is proportionally closer to the wall; centre carefully. Scent. The narrower jar has 30.6% less melt-pool surface; a smaller pool can mean less fragrance released at a time, so test hot throw in a closed room against the old candle rather than assuming it is the same.
Two non-burn checks belong here too. Burn-time claims: if your label states burn hours, re-measure; the same weight in a different shape can burn at a different rate. Stability and shipping: a taller, narrower jar has a smaller base and may need a different shipper; a 9.4 cm-plus jar with a lid will not fit a box with an 8 cm stated height such as the Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm. The worked BOM uses the 7 x 5 x 4 inch box (about 10.2 cm tall); check yours with the lid on and some cushioning.
Can CSI supply the narrower jar?
Diameters: no CSI jar listing states an inside diameter, and none in stock states a 7.5 cm or 9 cm width; in-stock stated widths cluster at 6, 7 and 10 cm. So a 9.0 cm to 7.5 cm switch is between your own supplier's jars, and the numbers above are yours to replace.
Our narrow 300 g listing: the Green Iridescent jar with bamboo lid states "Capacity - 300g Diameter - 7cm Height - 10cm" at ₹150.00. If 7 cm is outside, the inside is about 6.3 cm (31.17 cm², 0.35 cm walls assumed) and 300 g would need about 11.2 cm of depth by the rule of thumb, more than the stated 10 cm height; if 7 cm is inside, about 9.1 cm. Either way "300g" looks like a near-brim figure, so a 300 g candle with proper headspace may not fit: weigh a test pour. Argued against our own interest: it costs ₹40.00 more than the worked wide jar, so it narrows the candle without cutting cost; consider it for a gift line, not for this saving.
Cheaper does not mean same fill: our clear 200ml Salsa is ₹29.50 a jar from 50, the cheapest glass here, but it holds roughly 172–180 g of wax to the brim. It fails your condition. Our wicks are where CSI fits this decision: Eco C2 and Cotton Braided for the single-wick bracket, flat per wick at every pack.
The retest list
The money is this post's; the method belongs to the change-control and wick series. Which tests a jar change repeats is the same-fill, different-shape jar post, and why a taller jar of the same diameter mainly needs later-stage heat testing is the taller-jar post; here both diameter and height change, so you need both. Why a narrow 200 g jar needs a different wick from a wide one is the 6.5 cm versus 8 cm wick post.
One-off cost, worked: the six test candles and wicks come to ₹2,209.08, plus 6 hours of bench time (₹900.00), new label artwork for a taller jar (₹2,000.00) and photos (₹3,000.00): ₹8,109.08 in all, paid back in about 0.7 months at ₹11,331.00 a month. Heavier scents (vanilla, oud, coffee) commonly need their own confirmation, so add a confirmation burn for each scent family you sell in this jar.

Skip for this decision: any jar bought on its capacity label without a weighed test pour, and large wick packs before the single wick passes in the new jar.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells wax, oils, wicks and jars and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that we list no jar at the worked diameters, that our narrow 300 g jar costs more than the worked wide one, and that our cheapest jar here would shrink your candle.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, with stock checked per listing; the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (inside diameter, brim or fill basis, weight), we say so.
The jar diameters and prices, label, 300 candles a month, 20 seconds of second-wick labour at ₹150.00 an hour, the ₹70.00 reship cost, test labour, label artwork, photos and the 150 wide jars on the shelf are labelled worked examples; fill depths use a rule of thumb, not a measured density.
