Production calculator · Water weight to wax order
180 g of water is a useful number. It is not yet a wax number. Multiply it by an approximate factor to get a band, pour one jar to close the band, and only then commit to 500 jars' worth of wax.
155–162 g
estimated finished candle per jar from 180 g of water at an approximate 0.86–0.90 g/ml · confirm with a weighed pour · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My jar holds 180 g of water. How much wax will it hold? Roughly 154.8–162.0 g of finished candle, using a labelled approximate factor of 0.86–0.90 g/ml. At 8% that is about 142–149 g of wax and 12–13 g of oil. A weighed test pour gives the exact figure.

How much wax for 500 jars? Between 71.21 and 74.52 kg net at 8%, depending on the factor. With an example weighed fill of 157.5 g, six test jars and 3% loss, order 76 kg of wax and 6.6 kg of oil.

Was the 180 g measured to the brim or to the fill line? It matters. Water to the brim over-states the candle. Weigh water to the line you will actually pour to. If your 180 g was brim-full, see the brim correction.

Which wax is cheapest for 76 kg? On listed prices, Natural Soy Pearl at ₹32,310.00, then CSI 464 at ₹38,562.40, then Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹45,587.00. Pearl has no published fragrance ceiling in our data; check its page. Comparison below.
The short answer
Short answer: 180 g of water ≈ 180 ml. × ~0.86–0.90 g/ml (approximate) = 154.8–162.0 g finished per jar. 500 jars at 8%: 71.21–74.52 kg wax and 6.19–6.48 kg oil net.
After a test pour: Example weighed fill 157.5 g: 500 jars + 6 tests + 3% loss = 75.52 kg wax, 6.57 kg oil → order 76 kg wax and 6.6 kg oil.
Cost of guessing: Ordering to the high estimate instead of the tested fill costs ₹1,198.00 more in Chunks and ₹1,132.80 more in British Rose. Ordering to the low estimate leaves you short. Why 200 ml ≠ 200 g covers the basics.
One 180 g water reading, three estimates, one weighed answer — wax for 500 jars Low estimate · 0.86 g/ml 154.8 g per jar 71.21 kg Mid estimate · 0.88 g/ml 158.4 g per jar 72.86 kg High estimate · 0.90 g/ml 162.0 g per jar 74.52 kg Weighed test pour (example) 157.5 g per jar 72.45 kg Spread low→high: 3.31 kg of wax on 500 jars. Test first, then order to the weighed number. Factors 0.86–0.90 g/ml are labelled approximations; the 157.5 g pour is an example, not a CSI measurement.
Bars show net wax for 500 jars at an 8% load, before test jars and loss. The three estimates come from multiplying 180 g of water by labelled approximate factors; the fourth bar uses an example weighed pour of 157.5 g. Your own weighed pour replaces all four.
Straight answer
My jar holds 180 g of water. How do I estimate the wax fill before buying wax for 500 jars?
Treat 180 g of water as 180 ml; water weighs about a gram per millilitre. Solid wax is lighter, so multiply by a labelled approximate factor of about 0.86–0.90 g/ml. That gives a band of 154.8 to 162.0 g of finished candle per jar. It varies by wax, temperature and fill line, and it is not a CSI specification. Across 500 jars at 8% fragrance, the band is 71.21 to 74.52 kg of wax: a spread of 3.31 kg, too wide to order against blind. So close the band first. Buy one kilo of wax and a 100 g of oil, pour two or three jars to the same line, let them set and weigh them. If the weighed fill is, say, 157.5 g, then 500 jars plus six test jars and a 3% loss allowance need 75.52 kg of wax and 6.57 kg of oil, which rounds to 76 kg and 6.6 kg in real packs. On the listed prices, Natural Soy Pearl is the cheapest route to 76 kg at ₹32,310.00, but check its fragrance guidance first. One more check: if your 180 g was measured to the brim, not your fill line, the real candle is lighter again.
One line: a water reading gives you a band; one weighed candle gives you an order.
Close the estimate band for ₹1,000.20: one 1 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00), a 100 g of British Rose (₹342.20) and a 10-pack of Eco Thin C1 wicks (₹59.00). That pours six test jars at your fill line, enough to fix the fill weight before a 76 kg order.

From 180 g of water to an estimate band

Water is the cheapest measuring tool you own. It tells you the volume; it cannot tell you what wax weighs in that volume.

Weighing water into a jar is the right first move, and you have made it. Because one millilitre of water weighs close to one gram at room temperature, 180 g of water means about 180 ml of space up to wherever you stopped pouring. The candle that will occupy that space is a blend of wax and fragrance oil, and solid wax is less dense than water. How much less depends on the wax, on how warm it was when poured, on how much it shrank as it set, and on whether you topped up.

For planning, candle makers commonly use a factor somewhere around 0.86 to 0.90 g of set wax per ml. It is an approximation, and we label it as one every time we use it. It is not a density we have measured for any CSI wax, and it is not printed on any product page. Its job is to turn one water reading into a sensible range, so that you can buy the right amount of wax for a test rather than for the whole run.

180 g of water · 8% load · approximate factors · per jar and for 500 jars (net)
The estimate band before any wax is poured
Factor (approx.) Finished per jar Wax / oil per jar 500 jars: wax 500 jars: oil
0.86 g/ml 154.8 g 142.42 g / 12.38 g 71.21 kg 6.19 kg
0.88 g/ml 158.4 g 145.73 g / 12.67 g 72.86 kg 6.34 kg
0.90 g/ml 162.0 g 149.04 g / 12.96 g 74.52 kg 6.48 kg

On one jar, the difference between the low and high estimate is 7.2 g, which looks trivial. On 500 jars it is 3.6 kg of finished candle, of which 3.31 kg is wax. That is a 5 kg bag's worth of uncertainty. It is the reason this page does not give you "the" wax figure for 500 jars; it gives you the band and the one step that removes it.

Weigh three jars, not one
Jars from the same batch can differ slightly in wall thickness and base depth. Weigh water to the line in three jars and average them. If the three readings differ by more than a few grams, your fill line is not being judged consistently — mark it with a pen or a strip of tape before production, or use a jug with a clear graduation. Filling to a specific line covers how to hold one line across hundreds of jars.

Brim water or fill-line water?

Before trusting the band, check how the 180 g was measured. There are two common ways, and they give very different candles.

Illustrative · the same jar measured two ways
Which 180 g do you have?
How the water was measured What 180 g means Finished candle at 0.88 g/ml Wax for 500 jars at 8%
Water to your intended fill line 180 ml of candle space 158.4 g 72.86 kg
Water to the brim; fill line at 92% of brim (example) about 165.6 ml of candle space 145.7 g 67.03 kg
Water to the brim; fill line at 88% of brim (example) about 158.4 ml of candle space 139.4 g 64.12 kg

If your 180 g was brim-full, the candle is about 12.7 g lighter than the fill-line figure at a 92% fill, or 19.0 g at 88%, and 500 jars would need roughly 5.8–8.7 kg less wax than the first row suggests. The 92% and 88% fill levels are illustrative; your headspace is a style and safety choice. The fix is the same in every case: empty the jar, weigh water again to the exact line you intend to pour to, and start the band from that. The 200 ml jar guide explains why brim volume and fill weight part company.

The overflowing first batch. A maker estimates from brim water, then pours production jars to a sensible line and ends the day with several kilos of scented wax left in the melter. Or the reverse: estimates from a fill line, then pours closer to the brim because the jars "looked empty", and runs out 40 jars short. Fix: pick the line once, mark it, measure water to it, and pour the tests to it. The same line in every step.

What guessing costs on 500 jars

Skipping the test pour does not save money. It moves the risk from a ₹1,000 test kit onto a ₹45,000 order.

Suppose you skip the test and order straight from the band. Using the same allowances (six test jars and 3% loss, working assumptions), the three choices look like this, priced in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and British Rose. The weighed row uses our example fill of 157.5 g.

500 jars + 6 test jars + 3% loss · Chunks and British Rose at listed pack prices
Ordering from a guess versus a weighed fill
Order based on Wax needed Wax bought Wax cost Oil needed Outcome if the true fill is 157.5 g
Low estimate (154.8 g) 74.22 kg 75 kg ₹44,988.00 6.45 kg Short by about 0.52 kg of wax: a mid-run reorder
High estimate (162.0 g) 77.68 kg 78 kg ₹46,785.00 6.75 kg About 2.48 kg of wax left over
Weighed test pour (157.5 g) 75.52 kg 76 kg ₹45,587.00 6.57 kg About 0.48 kg spare, as planned

The high-estimate order costs ₹1,198.00 more in wax, and buying 7 kg of oil instead of 6.6 kg adds ₹1,132.80. That is the price of certainty without testing, and many makers would pay it happily. The low-estimate order is the real danger: running out of wax part-way through 500 jars means a second delivery, and a second lot of wax that may pour and set slightly differently from the first. When a client might increase the order covers the related question of buying ahead for a quantity you do not yet know.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The high-estimate order is the one that earns us most, and it would be easy to tell you to round up "to be safe". The test kit costs ₹1,000.20 and removes the guess entirely. On this order it saves at least ₹2,330.80 against the cautious guess, and it protects you from the cheaper guess going wrong. Buy the test kit first.
The CSI principle
Order to a weighed candle, never to a band.
A band is honest about uncertainty; it is not a purchase quantity. Pour two or three jars at your line, weigh them set, and let that number drive every kilo you buy.

Choosing the wax for a 76 kg order

At this size the wax choice moves the bill by thousands of rupees, so it is worth comparing the three container-suitable soy waxes CSI lists at production sizes. The order is the same 76 kg in each case, built from the listed bag sizes. All three are fine at 8% in principle, but only two have a published ceiling: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%, as the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no ceiling in our data; check its product page or ask us.

Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI wax with a listed 50 kg bag, and the only one with a genuine bulk break: ₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 at 5, 10 and 50 kg. That is a 5.6% break. Chunks and CSI 464 are flat per kilo. The price gap between Pearl and Chunks on this order is ₹13,277.00. That is real money, but a wax change is a formulation change: the fill factor, the set surface and the way your chosen oil behaves can all differ, so the test pours must be in the wax you will produce in. Do not test in Chunks and produce in Pearl.

Test in the production wax
The approximate factor, the weighed fill and the look of the set top all belong to one wax. If you are choosing between waxes on price, pour your test jars in each candidate and weigh them separately. A 1 kg bag of each costs ₹450.00 (Pearl), ₹507.40 (CSI 464) and ₹599.00 (Chunks).

Run total with Chunks ₹68,939.20
Run total with Pearl ₹55,662.20

Why 510 wicks and not 1,000? The Thin C1 is ₹5.90 a wick at every pack size, so there is no saving in the 1,000-pack. A 500-pack plus a 10-pack covers every jar with ten spares for ₹3,009.00, and the six test jars already used wicks from the stage-one 10-pack. Buy the 1,000 (₹5,900.00) only if the spare 490 will go into your next run. How many extra wicks to keep works through that decision properly. Per jar, the Chunks run comes to about ₹131.35 of wax, oil and wick before the jar itself, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.

The record sheet that makes the next order easy

The second time you fill this jar you should not need a water test at all. Keep one line per jar type, and the next 500-jar order becomes a multiplication.

Example record · replace with your own readings
Jar record: one line per jar type
Field Example entry Why it matters
Jar and supplier Your 180 ml-to-line jar The fill belongs to one jar model
Water to line (average of 3) 180 g Detects a moving fill line
Wax and load Chunks · 8% The factor changes with the wax
Weighed finished fill (average of 6) 157.5 g The number you order against
Implied factor 0.875 g/ml Your own factor, replacing 0.86–0.90
Wick and burn result Thin C1 · pool reached edge (example) Stops you re-testing next time
Pour loss on the run Measure it: wax bought − wax in jars Replaces the 3% assumption

The implied factor is worth writing down. In our example, 157.5 g from 180 ml is 0.875 g/ml, which sits inside the approximate range but is now your number for this wax in this jar. Use it for the next jar of a similar shape as a better first estimate, and still confirm with a weighed pour. 250 jars at a tested 160 g starts from exactly this kind of confirmed figure.

The first order pays for the measuring. Every order after it should be arithmetic.

Measure the real pour loss on this run as well. Weigh the wax you open, weigh what is left at the end, and compare with jars × fill. If your actual loss is 1.5% rather than 3%, your next 500-jar order can be about 1.1 kg lighter on wax. If it is 6%, you have found a process problem worth fixing before the next run. Wastage and margin on larger orders shows how that loss figure feeds into quoting.

180 g of water is where the maths starts. 157.5 g of weighed candle is where the order starts.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a 500-jar order the most profitable advice for us would be "round up to the high estimate". This page recommends a ₹1,000 test kit instead, and it names Natural Soy Pearl as the cheapest listed route to 76 kg even though Chunks earn us more per kilo.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick prices are Blog 760's figures verified 10 September 2026, with pack sizes re-checked on 25 September 2026. Every estimate, allowance and total is arithmetic on those prices and on the stated example figures, shown to two decimals.

The 0.86–0.90 g/ml factor, the example weighed fill of 157.5 g, the six test jars and the 3% loss are working assumptions, not CSI measurements or specifications. Stock of multiple 1 kg bottles of one oil is not guaranteed; confirm before production. For quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documents, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert water weight to wax weight for candles?
Treat grams of water as millilitres, then multiply by an approximate wax factor of about 0.86–0.90 g/ml. 180 g of water gives roughly 154.8–162.0 g of finished candle. The factor varies by wax, temperature and fill line, so confirm with a weighed test pour.
How much wax do I need for 500 candle jars?
Multiply your weighed fill by 500, split at your load and add allowances. At an example 157.5 g, 8%, six test jars and 3% loss: 75.52 kg of wax and 6.57 kg of oil, which rounds to 76 kg and 6.6 kg. The run order prices it.
Is the wax factor the density of soy wax?
It is a planning approximation, not a published density. Solid wax is lighter than water, and 0.86–0.90 g per ml is a commonly used working range. CSI does not publish a density for any wax. Your own weighed pour gives the factor that matters for your jar.
Should I measure water to the brim or to the fill line?
To the fill line you will actually pour to. Brim water over-states the candle — at an illustrative 92% fill, by about 12.7 g a jar, or roughly 5.8 kg of wax across 500 jars. Filling to a specific line shows how to hold one line consistently.
Which soy wax is cheapest for a large order?
On CSI's listed prices, Natural Soy Pearl Wax: ₹32,310.00 for 76 kg including a 50 kg bag, against ₹38,562.40 for CSI 464 and ₹45,587.00 for Chunks. Pearl has no published fragrance ceiling in our data, so check its product page before planning your load.
Can I buy more than 10 kg of soy wax at once?
Yes: combine bags. Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 are listed up to 10 kg bags; Natural Soy Pearl up to 50 kg. For larger quantities or a single quote across wax and oils, message CSI on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Water taken as about 1 g per ml. The approximate wax factor of 0.86–0.90 g/ml is a labelled working range, not a CSI specification; it varies by wax, temperature and fill line. The 157.5 g weighed fill is an illustrative example. Six test jars and 3% pour loss are labelled allowances. The 92% and 88% brim fill levels are illustrative. Load is a share of finished weight (oil = weight × load). Fragrance-load ceilings (Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits; Natural Soy Pearl has no ceiling in this data. Wick size per jar diameter is not published. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
