My Oud Fragrance Is Much More Expensive Than My Lavender — Should Both Candles Have the Same Selling Price?
शेयर करना
Is oud always the more expensive oil? No, so check the premise first. At CSI, Woody Oud is ₹4,531.20 a kilo and Lavender ₹5,221.00: in a 200 g candle at 8% the oud costs ₹72.50 and the lavender ₹83.54. Same price, no question. A premium oud is different: White Royal Oud costs ₹129.65 a candle, ₹46.11 more than lavender; perfume-grade Amber Oud Royal ₹186.24, ₹102.70 more.
What does one price cost me? At ₹799.00 with ₹110.00 of selling costs (worked examples), lavender earns ₹395.64 a candle and a White Royal Oud candle ₹349.53: ₹46.11 less each, ₹22,132.80 a year at 40 oud candles a month. With Amber Oud Royal, ₹102.70 less each.
What would a tier look like? Price that restores lavender's rupee contribution: ₹845.11 for White Royal Oud, ₹901.70 for Amber Oud Royal. As round price points (worked): ₹849.00 brings White Royal Oud back to a 40.0% material ratio; ₹999.00 brings Amber Oud Royal to 39.6%. Test a tier on real customers before you commit; whether to cut the oud's load instead is the next post's question.
Check the premise: which oud, at what price?
Real oud (agarwood) is famously costly. A candle fragrance oil named oud is a blend whose price is set by its supplier's formulation and positioning; fragrance oils are not essential oils, and CSI does not publish composition. So the word on the label tells you nothing about the price per kilo. Across CSI's oud listings the spread is wide:
| Oil | 1 kg price | Per gram | 16 g per candle | vs Lavender | Candle wording on the page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Oud | ₹4,531.20 | ₹4.53 | ₹72.50 | ₹11.04 cheaper | "candles (6-10%)" |
| Lavender | ₹5,221.00 | ₹5.22 | ₹83.54 | — | "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" |
| Midnight Bakhoor Royale | ₹7,999.00 | ₹8.00 | ₹127.98 | ₹44.44 dearer | no candle load stated in the text we captured |
| White Royal Oud | ₹8,103.00 | ₹8.10 | ₹129.65 | ₹46.11 dearer | "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" |
| Amber Oud Royal | ₹11,640.00 | ₹11.64 | ₹186.24 | ₹102.70 dearer | usage table "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%" |
So "my oud is much more expensive than my lavender" is true for some ouds and false for others, even inside one catalogue. Regal Royal Oud is out of stock on 4 October 2026 and is not shown. If your oud is from another supplier, put its price per kilo and the load your test approved into the same columns; the arithmetic is identical. For example, an oud bought at ₹9,000.00 a kilo (worked example) costs ₹144.00 a candle at 8%, takes the candle's COGS to ₹353.82 and its material ratio to 44.3% of ₹799.00. That is a candle for its own tier. The same oud at 6%, if a test approved it, would cost ₹108.00 instead: still well above a lavender at 8%.
Four candles, one bill of materials
A 200 g candle at 8% (16 g of oil, 184 g of wax; load as a share of total weight), the series default: use your own. Wax and wick are CSI prices; jar and box are your own supplier's figures, labelled as worked examples. Only the fragrance line changes between the four.
| Line | Lavender | Woody Oud | White Royal Oud | Amber Oud Royal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance, 16 g | ₹83.54 (28.5%) | ₹72.50 (25.7%) | ₹129.65 (38.2%) | ₹186.24 (47.0%) |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 184 g | ₹110.38 (37.6%) | ₹110.38 (39.1%) | ₹110.38 (32.5%) | ₹110.38 (27.9%) |
| Eco C2 wick | ₹9.44 (3.2%) | ₹9.44 (3.3%) | ₹9.44 (2.8%) | ₹9.44 (2.4%) |
| Jar with lid (yours) | ₹70.00 (23.9%) | ₹70.00 (24.8%) | ₹70.00 (20.6%) | ₹70.00 (17.7%) |
| Box and label (yours) | ₹20.00 (6.8%) | ₹20.00 (7.1%) | ₹20.00 (5.9%) | ₹20.00 (5.0%) |
| COGS | ₹293.36 (100.0%) | ₹282.32 (100.0%) | ₹339.47 (100.0%) | ₹396.06 (100.0%) |
Fragrance runs from about a quarter of the candle (Woody Oud) to nearly half (Amber Oud Royal). Everything else is ₹209.82 in every case. That is why "the oud oil is twice the price" does not mean "the oud candle is twice the cost": White Royal Oud's oil costs 1.55 times Lavender's per kilo, but its candle costs 1.16 times as much. The fixed costs dilute the fragrance gap; the question is whether what remains fits your price.
Contribution per SKU at one price
Contribution is what each candle leaves after its own costs: selling price minus COGS minus the costs of selling it (courier, payment gateway, packing). With one price of ₹799.00 and selling costs of ₹110.00 a candle (both worked examples; use your own), here is what each candle contributes, and what the range earns in a month at labelled volumes:
| Candle | COGS | Material ratio | Contribution | % of price | vs Lavender |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | ₹293.36 | 36.7% | ₹395.64 | 49.5% | — |
| Woody Oud | ₹282.32 | 35.3% | ₹406.68 | 50.9% | ₹11.04 more |
| White Royal Oud | ₹339.47 | 42.5% | ₹349.53 | 43.7% | ₹46.11 less |
| Amber Oud Royal | ₹396.06 | 49.6% | ₹292.94 | 36.7% | ₹102.70 less |
Every candle here still makes money at ₹799.00. That is the first honest point: a premium oud at one price is not a loss-maker, just a lower earner. At 120 lavender and 40 White Royal Oud candles a month, lavender contributes ₹47,476.80 and the oud ₹13,981.20, ₹61,458.00 together. Keeping one price costs you ₹1,844.40 a month against pricing the oud to match lavender's contribution, ₹22,132.80 a year. With Amber Oud Royal at one price, ₹49,296.00 a year at the same volume.
Whether that is a problem depends on what the oud does for the range. If it is the candle people come to your stall or page for, and it pulls lavender sales with it, ₹22,132.80 a year may be cheap marketing. If it is one scent among twenty, it is simply margin you are giving away. That is a business judgement, not arithmetic; the arithmetic just tells you its size.
The hidden option: raising everyone's price to carry the oud
There is a fourth way to keep one price that nobody chooses on purpose: lift the whole range's price until the oud earns what you need, and let lavender buyers pay for it. Spread over 120 lavender candles, the ₹1,844.40 a month the White Royal Oud gives up at one price is ₹15.37 per lavender candle. That can be a perfectly good decision if lavender sells on scent and the oud is the reason people visit. It is a poor one if lavender is your price-sensitive entry candle. Either way, write the number down: it is what one price really costs your best-selling scent.
Check the pack you buy before you price
The corridor should use the per-gram price of the pack you really reorder. For White Royal Oud it barely matters: 16 g costs ₹129.60 from a 100 g bottle against ₹129.65 from a kilo. For Amber Oud Royal it matters a lot: ₹207.84 from 100 g against ₹186.24 from 1 kg, a ₹21.60 difference that moves its material ratio by several points. But a kilo of a slow-selling perfume-grade oil ties up ₹11,640.00 of cash; whether that is worth it is the slow-selling fragrance post's question, not a pricing one.
The price corridor rule
A price corridor is a band of material ratio (COGS as a share of selling price) within which candles can share one price. Set its ceiling from the margin you need after selling costs and overheads; set its floor so you notice a candle that may be under-specified for its price. In our worked example the band is 30%–40%, which at ₹799.00 means COGS between ₹239.70 and ₹319.60. The numbers are a worked example: a maker with higher selling costs needs a lower ceiling.
Applied here: Woody Oud (35.3%) and Lavender (36.7%) sit inside, so they share ₹799.00. White Royal Oud (42.5%) is just above the ceiling: it needs ₹848.68 to sit exactly on it, which is why ₹849.00 is the natural tier. Amber Oud Royal (49.6%) is well above: it needs ₹990.15, which points to ₹999.00. A corridor turns "should they cost the same?" into a rule that answers the same way for the next twenty scents.
| Basis | White Royal Oud | Amber Oud Royal | What it protects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same rupee contribution as Lavender | ₹845.11 | ₹901.70 | monthly profit per candle sold |
| Corridor ceiling (40% material ratio) | ₹848.68 | ₹990.15 | the margin structure of the range |
| Nearest round tier (worked) | ₹849.00: ₹399.53 contribution, 40.0% | ₹999.00: ₹492.94 contribution, 39.6% | a price customers read easily |
If you tier: setting and testing the oud price
Two prices in one range work when the customer can see why. An oud in a heavier jar, with a different label colour or a "reserve" name, reads as a step up; the same jar at a higher price for a scent alone is harder to sell. Keep everything else identical and the fragrance has to carry the price on its own. A single price, by contrast, is simpler for gift sets, bundles and corporate orders, where buyers want one number.
Tiering also has a cost if it loses sales. At 40 oud candles a month, moving White Royal Oud from ₹799.00 to ₹849.00 adds ₹24,000.00 a year if volume holds. The tier still earns more than one price unless you lose more than about 5.0 oud candles a month. That is the threshold to watch in a test; modelling how price changes sales (elasticity) and the case for carrying an oud below margin as a flagship belong to the oud flagship post.
| What to track | Why | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Oud units a month at ₹849.00 | the volume the tier must keep | keep the tier if the loss is under about 5.0 a month |
| Lavender units a month | whether the range sells differently with two prices | if lavender drops, the tier is costing more than it shows |
| Bundles and gift orders | mixed-scent orders are where two prices cause friction | consider a bundle price that averages the two |
| Returns and complaints on the oud | a higher price raises expectations of throw | re-check throw before blaming the price |

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the four oils compared here and does not sell finished candles. This page still says our perfume-grade oud does not belong in a candle priced like a lavender, that pricing a premium oud properly can beat switching to our cheaper oud, and that the 1 kg of White Royal Oud saves almost nothing per gram.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. All four oils are in stock in every size shown; Regal Royal Oud is out of stock on that date and is not offered. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
The ₹799.00 selling price, ₹110.00 selling costs, the 30%–40% corridor, the tier prices, the jar (₹70.00) and box (₹20.00), and 120 lavender and 40 oud candles a month are labelled worked examples; the 8% load is used for every oil so the price effect is clean, and your own approved loads replace it.
