My Wooden-Wick Candle Burns Faster Than My Cotton-Wick Version — How Do I Compare Them Fairly?
शेयर करना
Can I match them like for like on size? No. CSI lists one wooden wick product, Performance Wooden Wicks (Imported), and its page states no size — only "One Pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs." So you are comparing two constructions, not two points on a shared scale.
What does the wick choice cost? In a 120 g candle, ₹5.90 of Eco Thin (C1) against ₹59 to ₹41.30 of wooden wick depending on pack — up to ₹35.40 more per candle at the best wooden pack price, or ₹35,400 across 1,000 candles.
What is the result actually worth? It is a verdict on your two candles, in your jar, with your wax and oil — not a ranking of wooden against cotton. Rerun it whenever the jar, wax, oil or load changes.
Why your current comparison is not one
Almost every wooden-versus-cotton comparison a maker runs by accident is contaminated in at least three ways, and each of them points in the same direction — toward whichever candle was made second, with more practice and a better-chosen jar.
The first contamination is the vessel. Wooden wicks tend to get poured into the wider, shallower jars that suit the aesthetic, and cotton into whatever was already on the shelf. Diameter changes everything about how hard a wick has to work, so a comparison across two diameters tells you about the jars. The second is cure. If the wooden candle was burned four days after pouring and the cotton one three weeks later, you have measured cure time. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, and the gap between those two extremes is wide enough to swamp a wick difference.
The third is session length, and it is the one that quietly destroys the arithmetic. If you burned the wooden candle in two long evenings and the cotton candle in six short ones, you did not just change the hours — you changed the number of relights, the number of trims, and the amount of time each candle spent reaching its working pool from cold. A candle lit six times does a lot of warming up. Equal total hours split differently are not equal sessions, and grams per hour computed across unequal session structures is not a comparable figure.
There is also a fourth difference worth naming, because it is real and it is not a flaw in your method: wooden and cotton wicks are not interchangeable as a product experience. They look different in the jar, they sound different, and a customer buying one is not expecting the other. That means the comparison is not purely technical. You may finish the test with a clear winner on grams per hour and still choose the other one — and that is a legitimate decision, provided you made it knowing what it costs in hours and in rupees.
The six conditions to hold
Write these six on the build sheet before you melt anything, and fill in both columns. If a cell differs between the two candles, the test is not ready to run.
| # | Condition | How you hold it | What it contaminates if it moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jar and fill weight | Two units of the same listing, weighed to the same fill — not "to the same line" | Diameter changes the work the wick must do; fill depth changes it again |
| 2 | Wax | Same wax, same batch, melted together and split | Different waxes behave differently with the same wick; a batch change is a formulation change |
| 3 | Fragrance oil and load | Same oil, same percentage, added at the stated temperature and stirred the stated time | Fragrance can load a wick and change how it performs — so this must not vary |
| 4 | Cure days | Both poured the same day, both cured with lids on in the same place | A four-day candle against a three-week candle measures cure, not wick |
| 5 | Session length and count | Timer, identical length, same number of sessions, same room and door position | Relight count and warm-up time differ; the rate stops being comparable |
| 6 | Trim length and tool | Same length before every burn, same cutter. The trimmer page states 1/4 inch before every burn | Trim is the single biggest influence on how a flame looks and a real one on how it behaves |
The size match that does not exist
This is the part that most comparison guides skip, and skipping it is what makes their conclusions sound more authoritative than they are. A proper like-for-like wick comparison would match the two constructions on a shared dimension — equivalent width, equivalent rated diameter — so that only construction varied. That match is not available in this range, and the pages say so by saying nothing.
| Wick | Stated size / diameter guidance | Listed packs | Price per wick | Can it be size-matched? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Wooden Wicks (Imported) | None. "One Pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs." | 10 · 50 · 100 | ₹59 → ₹47.20 → ₹41.30 | No. It is the only wooden option listed, so there is no wooden ladder either. |
| Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) / Thick (C2) | None. C1 and C2 appear only as variant names; the description gives no diameter | 10 · 20 · 50 · 100 · 500 · 1,000 | C1 ₹5.90 · C2 ₹9.44, flat | No. Two candidates, one real step between them, no published dimension. |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm" | 10 · 50 · 100 · 500 · 1,000 | ₹12, flat | Partly — it states a jar diameter intent, which is more than any other cotton option. |
| Eco Candle Wicks Loose | "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters" | 5 m ₹413 · 10 m ₹708 | Depends on your cut | Partly — a stated jar diameter, and you control the length. |
| Eco Braided Wicks | "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars" — no number | 5 m ₹472 · 10 m ₹826 | Depends on your cut | No numeric diameter stated. |
So the honest framing of your test is this: you are comparing the wooden wick CSI supplies with the cotton wick CSI supplies, as supplied, in your jar. That is a genuinely useful comparison — it is exactly the decision you have to make as a buyer — but it will not support the sentence "wooden wicks burn faster than cotton wicks". A single wooden product versus a single cotton size in one 6 cm jar cannot carry a general claim, and anyone making that claim from the same evidence is overreaching.
Two practical consequences follow. First, when the result goes against the wooden wick, the available response is not "try a narrower wooden wick" — there is no narrower one listed. It is to change the jar, the fill, the count, or to accept the result. Second, when the result goes against cotton, you do have one step: Thick (C2) down to Thin (C1), or across to cotton braided at ₹12. The asymmetry is worth knowing before you start, because it tells you which outcome you can act on cheaply.
The comparison, step by step
Two candles, one melt, two evenings, one subtraction each. The whole thing is a fortnight including cure, and almost all of that is waiting.
What each wick costs per candle
The hours half of this decision is measured. The money half is already published, and it is larger than most makers expect. Wick is normally a rounding error in a candle's bill of materials; between these two constructions it is not.
| Wick | Best listed price per wick | Wick cost in one candle | Total material per candle | Wick cost across 1,000 candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 — flat from 10 to 1,000 | ₹5.90 | ₹152.08 | ₹5,900 |
| Eco Thick (C2) | ₹9.44 — flat from 20 to 1,000 | ₹9.44 | ₹155.62 | ₹9,440 |
| Cotton Braided Ready Made | ₹12 — flat from 10 to 1,000 | ₹12 | ₹158.18 | ₹12,000 |
| Performance Wooden — 10-pack | ₹59 | ₹59 | ₹205.18 | ₹59,000 |
| Performance Wooden — 100-pack | ₹41.30 | ₹41.30 | ₹187.48 | ₹41,300 |
Now put the two halves together, because that is the only comparison that means anything commercially. Suppose your measured pair really is 7.9 g/hr against 6.2 g/hr, giving 14.0 and 17.8 hours from the fill. If the faster candle is also the dearer one, the decision is easy and it is not the wooden wick. If the faster candle is the cheaper one, you have a genuine trade — fewer hours for ₹35.40 less material — and the answer depends on what you charge and what your customer thinks they bought. Work it in cost per hour of candle, not in cost per candle. That reframing is the subject of the economics cluster later in this series, and it is where this test eventually pays for itself.
What to buy for the comparison
Both sides of the pair plus the instrument. Buy the smallest pack of each — on two of the three, small packs cost exactly the same per wick as large ones.

What the result is allowed to mean
You now have two rates, two sets of appearance notes, two wick costs and — if you ran the pair to the end — two residue weights. Here is the honest boundary around what you can conclude from them.
| Statement | Supported? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| "In this jar, with this wax and oil, candidate X consumed more wax per hour than candidate Y." | Yes | That is exactly what you measured, under six locked conditions. |
| "Candidate X gives me about N hours from this fill, and candidate Y about M." | Yes, with care | Arithmetic from your own rate. State the session length it assumes, and subtract any wax the candle leaves behind. |
| "Wooden wicks burn faster than cotton wicks." | No | One wooden product against one or two cotton sizes in one jar. Neither has a published size. The claim is far wider than the evidence. |
| "This is the wick for my 200 g jar as well." | No | Diameter and depth change the work a wick does. Re-run the pair in each vessel you sell. |
One last thing to keep in the file alongside the numbers: the reason you ran the test. If you are choosing between constructions for a new range, the result is a purchasing decision and the cost column matters as much as the rate. If you are explaining to yourself why an existing product changed behaviour, the same pair of candles is a change-control question instead, and the rule there is simpler — a new wick is a formulation change, and it comes with a fresh full-life burn test even when nothing else moved. Both uses are legitimate. They just lead to different next steps.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Wooden wicks are the more expensive line on this page by a wide margin — up to ₹35.40 more per candle than Eco Thin (C1) — so a supplier chasing the invoice would tell you they are the premium choice and leave it there. Instead this guide tells you that CSI's wooden listing states no size, that there is no narrower wooden option to fall back on, and that a 10-pack is the right quantity to decide on. If the test sends you to the ₹5.90 wick, that is a good outcome for a maker who will keep pouring.
Every price, pack size and quoted specification comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. No CSI wick, wax or jar page publishes a burn time, a burn rate or hours per gram, and none is estimated here — the 7.9 and 6.2 g/hr figures are illustrative readings from one maker's own pair of candles, shown to demonstrate the arithmetic, and they are deliberately not attributed to a construction. Size and diameter statements are quoted only where a page makes them, and the pages for Performance Wooden Wicks and Eco Candle Wicks make none. Where a listing contradicts itself — as the Amber Shiny Glass Jar's body text does on colourway — we say so.

Assumptions stated: load is calculated as a percentage of the finished candle, so a 120 g candle at 8% is 110.4 g wax + 9.6 g oil; fixed material before the wick = ₹66.13 wax + ₹32.85 oil + ₹47.20 jar = ₹146.18, giving ₹152.08 on Eco C1, ₹155.62 on Eco C2, ₹158.18 on cotton braided, ₹205.18 on a wooden wick at the 10-pack price and ₹187.48 at the 100-pack price; ₹41.30 − ₹5.90 = ₹35.40 per candle and ₹35,400 across 1,000 candles; the 23% figure is ₹187.48 ÷ ₹152.08. Melting 230 g for a pair of 110.4 g candles includes a 3–5% planning allowance for wax left in the pot. The 7.9 g/hr and 6.2 g/hr rates are illustrative readings from one maker's own pair, not CSI data, and are not attributed to a construction; hours are 110.4 ÷ rate (13.97 and 17.81, shown as 14.0 and 17.8).
