What do I test first? Nothing. You read first. 62 of CSI's 107 oil pages publish a vanillin or discolouration position, so roughly half your shortlist can be ranked before you melt anything. The short answer
One melt, one day, one blank: the reason your two oils behaved differently may be the oils — or may be two different melts, two different loads, two different jars or two different shelves. A panel poured together removes every explanation except the one you are testing.
Screen on appearance and on burn: a candidate that stays white and tunnels has failed. Burn one votive per candidate at the end, because appearance testing alone is not enough.
Silence is the trigger for testing: Lavender Fragrance Oil, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Bergamot Amber, Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), Dark Vanilla Oud and Woody Oud all publish nothing on discolouration. They are not cleared. They are unread.

What should I actually test before committing fragrances to a white candle collection?
Two stages, and the first is free. Stage one is a page audit: for every candidate, find the vanillin or discolouration line and write it down verbatim. 62 of CSI's 107 oil pages publish one — British Rose states "Vanillin Content 0% No discolouration - safe for white, cream, and pastel waxes", while Mint Sandalwood states "moderate cream-to-amber toning in white or light-coloured wax". Mark the silent ones as silent: 45 pages publish nothing, including Lavender, Bergamot Amber, Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) and Dark Vanilla Oud. Stage two is a panel: twelve candidates poured as 13 identical 70 gram votives — the thirteenth is an unfragranced blank — from one 1 kg melt on one day, at one load, in one jar model, on one wick, photographed together against a white card at days 0, 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90, with one votive per candidate burned at the end. Materials: ₹2,355.86, or ₹196.32 a candidate — less than the ₹249.69 of materials in one finished 200 g white candle. What you must not expect is a number from anyone: no page states a rate, an endpoint, a shelf life or a storage instruction, and the panel's output is your own ranking plus a written acceptance rule, not a prediction.
One line: read all twelve pages, then pour all twelve oils on the same afternoon in the same jar with one blank beside them — anything else is comparing candles that were never comparable.

The verdict on your shortlist
Before the panel, sort the shortlist. A third of it can usually be decided on a Tuesday morning with no wax at all.
Your shortlist splits four ways, and each group gets a different treatment. This is the ruling to make before you spend anything, because a panel is a scarce resource: thirteen jars is a comfortable number to pour, photograph and read, and if you put twenty candidates into it you will pour it badly.

Group B is the one makers get wrong in both directions. Some drop a strong-selling scent because the page mentions toning, when the correct move was to put it in a Black Matte Glass Jar and stop showing the wax. Others keep it in the white range and hope. Either way it does not need a panel slot to discover its behaviour — the page already told you — so give it one slot as a deliberate negative control and spend the rest on group D.
The mistake: screening the two oils you already suspect and calling it a test. The comparison that starts this whole question — one oil yellowed, one stayed white — is exactly the comparison that cannot be trusted, because those two candles were almost certainly poured on different days, possibly in different jars, at different loads, and stored in different places. Three uncontrolled differences are enough to produce the observation with no difference between the oils at all. Pour both again in the panel, next to each other, and you will find out whether the oils differ or your process did.
What the pages publish — and who is silent
Here is a worked shortlist of twelve candidates for a white collection, split into the four groups, with each page's own wording and the oil cost in a finished 200 g candle at 8%. Notice that the silent group contains an oil with "Amber" in its name and an oil whose name announces patchouli — two materials that CSI's other pages explicitly name as responsible for toning. Silence is not a statement about the material.

Other silent pages worth naming, because makers reach for them constantly for pale candles: Bergamot Amber (₹5,437/kg), Mango Coconut (₹3,964/kg), Fresh Strawberries (₹3,540/kg), Honeydew Melon (₹3,398.40 per 1000 gm), Fallen Leaves (₹4,248/kg), Autumn (₹5,428/kg), Woody Oud (₹4,531.20/kg), Saffron Cedarwood (₹6,867.60/kg), Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) (₹8,960/kg) and Dark Vanilla Oud (₹5,691/kg). None of those pages says the oil is safe for white wax and none says it is not. If one of them is going to carry a white SKU, it belongs in the panel.
One page declines to state a flash point — and says so
Zesty Lemon's page reads "FlashpointAvailable on request / SDS", which is the honest form of a gap: it tells you the figure exists somewhere rather than leaving you to guess. Thirty-two other pages state only the threshold "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a template line and not a measured value — never treat it as one, and never treat a flash point as an add temperature. Eighteen pages state an actual measured figure. One deliberate omission: there is no heat-aged arm and no sunlight arm. Both are legitimate tests and both answer different questions — temperature-driven change and light-driven change each get their own guide in this cluster. Mixing them into a fragrance-screening panel is how you end up with thirteen jars and no conclusion. Screen the oils first, then take the two or three that win into a light or heat arm if your storage demands it.
Pouring it so the result means something

Write the sheet before you open the waxThirteen rows. Jar number, candidate name, product handle, page wording verbatim, group A/B/C/D, 15 gm price. Row 13 is the blank: "no fragrance". Then the header: wax and pack, load, add temperature, pour temperature, wick, jar, date. A panel without this sheet is thirteen unlabelled candles in three weeks' time.

Stick and centre every wick first, then weigh 13 × 64.4 g of waxWick stickers in all thirteen jars while the glass is clean and dry. Then weigh the wax into thirteen portions of 64.4 g — total 837.2 g out of the 1 kg pack, leaving ~163 g for spills and top-ups. Weigh; do not estimate by eye. The whole panel rests on every jar holding the same mass of wax.

Melt once, then portion — do not melt thirteen timesMelt the 837.2 g together so every jar shares one thermal history, then ladle 64.4 g portions into thirteen warmed cups. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page specifies fragrance in at 80–90°C; work fast enough that the portions are still inside that band when you dose them, and write the actual reading for each.

Dose 5.6 g of oil into twelve cups and nothing into the thirteenthWeigh each dose on the same scale; 5.6 g is small enough that a spoon is not good enough. Stir each cup for a full two minutes — the Eco Soy CSI 400 page specifies exactly that, and it is sound practice on any soy. Rinse or change the stirrer between candidates so you are not carrying one oil into the next.

Pour all thirteen inside the stated window and leave them alonePour at 70–80°C as the page states. Then do not move them for a full day. Cure with lids on: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, and your colour checkpoints run alongside the cure rather than after it.

Photograph on day zero — this is the measurementAll thirteen in one frame, in jar-number order, white card in shot with the date written on it, one lamp, curtains closed, same distance. Repeat exactly at days 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90. If you change the lamp or the angle halfway through, the series is worth very little, so write the setup down: which lamp, which wall, which spot on the bench.

At day 90, read against the blank and burn every candidateCompare each candidate to the blank, not to its own day-zero photograph — that is what isolates the oil. Then burn all thirteen for two hours, recording time to a full melt pool, flame height, soot, mushrooming and your throw score at 30 and 120 minutes. A candidate only passes if it passes on both appearance and burn.
Do not judge a candidate against its own day-zero photograph alone. If the blank has also warmed slightly — and soy can look different at ninety days for reasons that have nothing to do with fragrance — then measuring each candidate against its own start over-attributes everything to the oil. The blank is the baseline for the whole panel: the finding you want is "candidate 7 is two steps warmer than the blank at day 90", not "candidate 7 is warmer than it used to be". This is also why the blank must come from the same melt and sit on the same shelf, not be a leftover from last month.

Read the last three rows together. Screening twelve oils costs 1.0% of the materials in the collection those oils are going to carry, and it costs less per candidate than one finished candle. There is no version of the arithmetic in which the panel is the expensive option. The expensive option is discovering at month three that two of your six SKUs have warmed past what you photographed, and having to choose between remaking them and explaining them.
The CSI principle
Twelve oils poured on twelve afternoons are twelve opinions. Twelve oils poured on one afternoon are a ranking.
₹196.32 a candidate, one melt, one jar, one load, one wick, one shelf, one blank. The only thing allowed to differ between those thirteen jars is the bottle you dosed from.
Reading the panel and writing the acceptance rule
A panel that ends in a feeling is a wasted afternoon. It should end in a sentence you can print.
At day 90 you have six photographs of thirteen jars and thirteen burn records. Turn that into three artefacts, in this order.

The acceptance rule is the artefact makers skip, and it is the one that has commercial value. It reads something like: "units in the white range must fall between reference photograph W1 and reference photograph W3; a unit at or beyond W4 is sold through the seconds channel with the tone described." Notice what it does not contain — a month count, a shade-change rate, a promise. Your tolerance is yours to set and yours to state, and no supplier, ours included, can set it for you. What the panel gives you is the evidence to set it on.
Keep the panel jars; do not burn all of them
Burn one jar per candidate at day 90 and keep the rest as your reference set. Those jars are the only physical record of what each candidate looked like at each stage, and next year, when you are choosing between the two oils that tied, you will want them. Store them lids on in a closed box away from light, labelled with jar number and pour date. The right jar for a screening panel for three reasons. Its page states a capacity of ~70g wax fill in grams rather than millilitres, so you can plan the wax arithmetic directly instead of weighing a filled jar first. It is clear, which is the point — an opaque jar hides exactly what you are trying to measure. And at ₹31.86 each thirteen of them cost less than half of one 1 kg wax pack, so a panel is never gated on vessels. Buy a pack of 10 and a pack of 5 for fifteen jars: thirteen to pour, two spare. If your production range is opaque, still screen in clear glass and switch at production.

The wax with a documented recipe
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
Screen in a wax whose page gives you numbers to hold constant. This one states a recommended load of 8% to 13% of total wax weight with 10% recommended, fragrance in at 80–90°C, a pour at 70–80°C and a cure of a minimum of 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks, before burn testing. That is four fixed values written down by someone other than you, which is exactly what a panel needs. Group A · the positive control worth keeping
British Rose Fragrance Oil
Include at least two group-A oils so that a panel where everything warms tells you something about your wax rather than about your candidates. This page states "Vanillin Content 0% No discolouration - safe for white, cream, and pastel waxes", a measured flashpoint of 192°C, and describes wax compatibility across all types. At ₹3,068 per kilo it is ₹49.09 of oil per 200 g candle — joint cheapest per candle on the whole shortlist. One CSI customer, after five years of testing fragrances, notes that "you can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell", which is a useful remark if you are considering an 8% rather than 10% production load.

Zesty Lemon Fragrance Oil
Worth a slot for the discipline its page shows: "Vanillin Content0% - zero discoloration risk" on the colour question, and "FlashpointAvailable on request / SDS" on the flash point — the only page in the range that states a gap rather than leaving one. A supplier page that tells you what it does not know is more useful than one that fills the space. Commercially it is the cheapest citrus route into a white collection after Citrus Lemon: ₹3,400 per kilo, ₹54.40 of oil per 200 g candle at 8%. Bright citrus tops are also the ones most likely to change in character over a long hold, so pair the colour panel with a scent check at the same checkpoints.

How do I test a fragrance oil for discolouration in white wax?
Pour it as one small candle from the same melt, on the same day, at the same load, in the same jar, on the same wick as every other candidate — plus one unfragranced blank — then photograph the whole set together against a fixed white reference at days 0, 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90 and compare each candidate to the blank. Burn one jar per candidate at the end. Thirteen 70 gram votives cost ₹2,355.86 including twelve 15 gm oils, or ₹196.32 a candidate.
How many fragrance oils should I screen at once?
Twelve candidates plus a blank is a comfortable panel: thirteen 70 gram votives come out of a single 1 kg wax pack (837.2 g at 8%), pour in one afternoon and photograph in one frame. That is a defensible working choice, not a standard. Above about sixteen jars the pour takes long enough that the last cups are cooler than the first, which introduces exactly the kind of uncontrolled difference the panel exists to remove. Run two panels rather than one oversized one.
Do I still need to test an oil whose page states 0% vanillin?
Include it, yes — but as a positive control rather than as a doubt. The stated figure describes the oil; your candle is the oil plus your wax, your load, your vessel, your pour temperature and your shelf. Two or three group-A oils in the panel give you a baseline: if they warm too, the finding is about your wax or your conditions, not about your candidates. Group-A oils on CSI's pages include British Rose, Jasmine, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Zesty Lemon.
Which CSI oils publish nothing about discolouration?
45 of the 107 pages. Ones commonly used in pale candles include Lavender Fragrance Oil, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Orchard Pear, Mango Coconut, Fresh Strawberries, Honeydew Melon, Bergamot Amber, Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), Woody Oud, Saffron Cedarwood and Dark Vanilla Oud. A silent page is not a clearance — it is the reason the panel exists. Give every silent candidate a slot.
Can I screen with 15 gm trial bottles or do I need bigger sizes?
A 15 gm bottle is the right size for a panel and the wrong size for production. Each 70 gram votive at 8% needs 5.6 g, so 15 gm covers the jar with enough spare for a second round or for smelling the neat oil. Most CSI oils list 15 gm from ₹68.44, though some start at 50 g or 100 g — check the page. Once a candidate wins, move to the 500 g or 1 kg pack, where the per-kilo price is lower: Citrus Lemon is ₹5,428/kg at 15 gm against ₹2,832 at 1 kg.
Should I also test the wax, the jar and the load?
Yes, but not in this panel. One variable at a time is what makes a panel readable: change the oil only, and hold wax, load, jar, wick and shelf identical. Once you have a ranking, run a second, smaller panel on the winners with the variable you care about next — 8% against 10% is the usual one, since it changes both colour exposure and throw, and the load is a formulation ceiling rather than a target (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended). Comparing two waxes for long-hold stability is its own exercise again.
