Wick Cost · Cost per Candle
The wick is bought per candle, so a per-kilo wax comparison leaves it out. At 5 kg rates CSI 464 is ₹23.85 cheaper per 200 g candle than CSI 468 — the most a dearer wick can add before the cheaper wax stops winning.
₹23.85
wick budget per 200 g candle: CSI 464 vs CSI 468 at 5 kg rates · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should wick cost be included? Yes. If one wax needs a dearer wick to burn properly, the wick premium is part of that wax's cost per candle — just like extra fragrance.

How big is the wick budget? Wax grams × price gap. CSI 464 vs CSI 468 at 5 kg: 184 g × ₹0.1296 = ₹23.85 per 200 g candle.

Which wicks fit inside it? Eco Thick C2 (+₹3.54) and Cotton Braided (+₹6.10) over Eco Thin C1. Performance Wooden Wicks (+₹35.40 to +₹53.10) do not.

How do I know which wick each wax needs? A full-life wick bracket in the cheaper wax against the dearer wax as control. CSI publishes no wick charts. See the test.
The short answer
Answer: Yes. Add the wick premium the cheaper wax needs to its cost per candle. With CSI 464 vs CSI 468, a wick up to ₹23.85 dearer per candle keeps CSI 464 cheaper; wooden wicks do not fit.
Why: Wicks are bought per candle and double in multi-wick jars. A per-kilo comparison never sees them.
Method: Bracket wicks in the cheaper wax against the dearer wax's approved wick, through full life; cost the cheapest passing wick. The cost-per-candle hub.
How much dearer a wick can be before the cheaper wax stops winning Wick premium over Eco Thin C1 (₹5.90) per candle · CSI 464 vs CSI 468 at 5 kg rates · 184 g of wax per 200 g candle Eco Thick C2 +₹3.54 Cotton Braided +₹6.10 Wooden, 100-pack +₹35.40 Wooden, 50-pack +₹41.30 Wooden, 10-pack +₹53.10 ₹0 ₹10 ₹20 ₹30 ₹40 ₹50 ₹60 Wax gap ₹23.85 per candle Premium smaller than the wax gap: CSI 464 + this wick is still the cheaper candle Premium larger than the wax gap: CSI 468 with Eco Thin is cheaper Wick needs come from YOUR burn test — CSI publishes no wick-size charts and no wick is matched to either wax here.
Each bar is how much more a wick costs than an Eco Thin C1, per candle. The dashed line is the wax gap between CSI 464 and CSI 468 in a 200 g candle at 8% (₹23.85). A wick premium left of the line keeps the cheaper wax cheaper; one right of the line makes the dearer wax the cheaper candle. Which wick each wax needs comes only from your burn test.
Straight answer
One soy wax requires more expensive wicks to burn properly — should wick cost be included when comparing wax suppliers?
Yes — the wick premium belongs to the wax that needs it. Compare suppliers on cost per saleable candle, not price per kilo, and every material whose choice depends on the wax comes along. The test is simple: the cheaper wax stays cheaper only while its wick premium is smaller than its wax saving per candle. With CSI's prices at 5 kg, CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg) is ₹23.85 cheaper than CSI 468 (₹637.00/kg) in a 200 g candle at 8%. Eco Thick C2 (₹9.44) or Cotton Braided (₹12.00) over Eco Thin C1 (₹5.90) uses ₹3.54 or ₹6.10 of that, so CSI 464 still wins. A Performance Wooden Wick at ₹41.30–₹59.00 uses more than all of it. In a double-wick candle the premium doubles. Which wick each wax needs is not published anywhere — run a full-life wick bracket in the cheaper wax against the dearer wax as control, and cost the cheapest wick that passes every safety line.
One line: a wick costs per candle, so a wax that needs a dearer one must save at least that much per candle to stay cheaper.
The wick test that answers this — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 with Eco Thin C1 as control, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided, all with Sandalwood — costs ₹4,098.78 in CSI materials. Every wick bought in a 10-pack.
Buy Eco Candle Wicks

Yes — the wick is a line in the candle's cost, and it can flip the decision

A wick is bought per candle, not per kilo. That is exactly why it gets forgotten in a per-kilo comparison.

When you compare wax suppliers on price per kilo, you compare one ingredient. When you compare them on cost per candle, every ingredient whose quantity or price depends on the wax has to come along — and the wick is one of them. If one wax burns properly only with a dearer wick, that wick's extra cost belongs to the wax, exactly as extra fragrance would. Leave it out and the cheaper wax looks cheaper than it is.

The size of the effect surprises people. Take two real CSI waxes at their 5 kg rates: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at ₹637.00. In a 200 g candle at 8% (184 g of wax), CSI 464 is ₹23.85 cheaper. That is the budget the cheaper wax has for a dearer wick. An Eco Thick C2 wick at ₹9.44 uses ₹3.54 of it; a Cotton Braided Ready Made wick at ₹12.00 uses ₹6.10. A Performance Wooden Wick at ₹41.30 to ₹59.00 each uses all of it and more — so if your burn test said the cheaper wax only worked with a wooden wick, the dearer wax would make the cheaper candle.

Two honest limits. First, no one can tell you from a data sheet which wick either wax needs in your jar with your oil: CSI publishes no wick-size charts and no burn data, and no CSI wick is claimed here as a size step from another. The scenarios below are "if your burn test shows…" cases, not predictions. Second, the wick choice is decided by safe, complete burning first and cost second. A cheaper wick that tunnels or a dearer one that overheats the jar is not a cost option at all.

The CSI principle
Every material whose choice depends on the wax belongs to the wax's cost. The wick is the one most often left out.
Compare suppliers on cost per saleable candle. If one wax needs a dearer wick to burn properly, add the wick premium — and for multi-wick candles, multiply it.

The wick budget: how much dearer a wick can be

The quickest test is to compare the wick premium — what the wick the cheaper wax needs costs above the wick the dearer wax needs — with the wax gap per candle. If the premium is smaller, the cheaper wax still wins. The table runs every CSI wick option against CSI 464 vs CSI 468, for a single-wick 200 g candle and an illustrative 400 g double-wick candle. CSI does not list double-wick jars; the 400 g size is illustrative and the wick maths holds for any jar.

Performance Wooden 10-pack ₹590.00 ₹59.00 ₹53.10 CSI 468 cheaper ₹106.20 CSI 468 cheaper

Three things stand out. Eco wicks and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack size — ₹5.90, ₹9.44 and ₹12.00 — so their premium does not shrink as you buy more. Performance Wooden Wicks do have a real pack break: ₹59.00 each in tens, ₹47.20 in fifties and ₹41.30 in hundreds, a 30% drop. And in a double-wick candle the wick premium doubles while the wax gap only doubles with the wax weight, so the comparison stays proportional — but the rupees involved are twice as large. At 1 kg bag prices the wax gap is bigger (₹26.24 per 200 g candle, because CSI 464 is ₹507.40 at 1 kg and CSI 468 is ₹650.00), which gives the cheaper wax slightly more room.

Count every wick-related item, but only once
Wick stickers (40 for ₹100.00, ₹2.50 each) and centring devices are the same for both waxes when the wick count is the same, so they cancel out. They stop cancelling when one wax needs two wicks and the other one: then the second wick brings its own sticker and centring with it.

The full candle, wick by wick

Here is the whole material cost of a 200 g candle with Sandalwood Fragrance Oil at its 1 kg rate (₹5.03 a gram) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), for CSI 464 with each wick, against CSI 468 with an Eco Thin C1 at ₹274.34. Excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

CSI 464 + Eco Thick C2 ₹93.36 ₹80.43 ₹9.44 ₹254.03 −₹20.31

CSI 464 + Performance Wooden (10-pack) ₹93.36 ₹80.43 ₹59.00 ₹303.59 +₹29.25

With an Eco or Cotton wick, CSI 464 stays the cheaper candle by ₹17.75 to ₹23.85. With wooden wicks at any pack size it becomes the dearer candle. That is the whole decision on one line — and it depends entirely on what your burn test says each wax needs. The cost-per-saleable-candle hub has the method, and comparing at each wax's optimal load adds the fragrance line when the waxes need different loads as well as different wicks.

Pricing the wick at the trial pack and the wax at the production pack. For Eco and Cotton wicks it makes no difference — the per-wick price is flat. For wooden wicks it does: a maker who tests with a 10-pack sees ₹59.00 a wick, and one who budgets with 100-packs sees ₹41.30. Fix: cost both waxes and both wicks at the pack sizes you will actually reorder every month, and write the pack on the cost sheet.

What the wick decision is worth in a month

Per-candle differences look small; a month makes them visible. In an example 500-candle month of the Sandalwood 200 g candle, the material bill for each CSI 464 wick option, and its difference from CSI 468 with Eco Thin, is:

Example 500 candles a month · material only · replace the volume with yours
Monthly material bill by wax and wick
Wax + wick Month's material vs CSI 468 + Eco Thin
CSI 464 + Eco Thin C1 ₹1,25,245.20 saves ₹11,923.20
CSI 464 + Eco Thick C2 ₹1,27,015.20 saves ₹10,153.20
CSI 464 + Cotton Braided Ready Made ₹1,28,295.20 saves ₹8,873.20
CSI 464 + Performance Wooden (100-pack) ₹1,42,945.20 costs ₹5,776.80 more
CSI 468 + Eco Thin C1 ₹1,37,168.40 —

Wick prices are only half the wick cost. The other half is development: every time a wax needs a different wick, every fragrance in your range may need its own wick bracket before it can be sold. If one wax needs repeated bracketing and the other does not, that is a real cost of the first wax, paid in test candles and weeks. It belongs on the same sheet, as a one-off cost spread over the candles you expect to sell. When multiple wick tests per fragrance should influence your wax works that out properly.

Changing the wick to rescue a wax that is wrong for the jar. A maker finds the cheaper wax tunnels with the usual wick, moves to a much larger or different wick, and the tunnel goes — but the jar now runs hot near the end of the candle. The wick change has bought a full melt pool with a safety problem. Fix: a wick is only an acceptable option if the candle is no worse than the control on flame height, soot and jar heat through its full life. Only then does its price enter the cost comparison.

Finding out which wick each wax actually needs

The wick that "works" is the one that passes the full-life burn beside the control — not the first one that makes a wide pool.

The test is a small wick bracket in the cheaper wax, against the dearer wax with its approved wick as control. It answers: does CSI 464 burn as well as CSI 468 with the same cheap wick, and if not, which dearer wick does it need? The wicks in the bracket are chosen as different constructions to compare, not as size steps — CSI publishes no sizing chart and claims no equivalence between its wicks.

1
Fix the control3 candles of CSI 468 with Eco Thin C1, 200 g at 8% Sandalwood. If your current approved wax and wick are different, use those.
2
Pour the bracket in the cheaper wax3 candles each of CSI 464 with Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided Ready Made. Add 3 with a Performance Wooden Wick only if the first three all fail — it is the dearest arm by far.
3
Keep everything else identicalSame oil lot, same White Matte jars, same pour day, wicks centred with the same centring device. Follow each wax maker's temperatures: CSI's CSI 464 page lists 80–90°C as its melt/pour working range; CSI 468's page states pour at 58–60°C.
4
Cure to one checkpointFor example 7 days for all candles — a labelled checkpoint.
5
Burn in matched pairs, 3–4 hour cyclesOne control beside one bracket candle, same room, away from draughts (a commonly used cycle — your working practice). Record the sheet below at the end of every burn.
6
Take one of each to the end of lifeThe lower third of the jar is where a wick that looked right can start to overheat or drown. One candle per arm burns to the end.
7
Choose the cheapest passing wickThe wick that goes into the cost table is the cheapest one that is no worse than control on every safety line and inside your tolerance on every burn line.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Performance Wooden Wicks are among the dearest items in our wick range, and this page tells you that if a cheap wax needs them, you are better off buying a dearer wax and a cheap wick. We also cannot tell you which wick either of our waxes needs in your jar; we publish no wick charts. The bracket is the only way to know.

Comparing suppliers, not just waxes

Your question says "wax suppliers", and the wick line matters even more there. Different suppliers' waxes may need different wicks, and a supplier who sells wax but not your wick adds a second purchase, a second freight charge and a second stock line. Keep the comparison at cost per saleable candle and every one of those differences has a place to go: the wick price in the wick line, the extra freight in a landed cost per candle, the extra bracket tests as a one-off development cost. Landed cost per kilo across suppliers and the true commercial cost of a soy wax build that sheet.

Finally, keep the wick decision tied to the wax lot that proved it. If the wax supplier changes, or the same supplier changes the product, the wick result goes back to REPEAT, not KEEP. Why an identical-looking wax still needs wick testing explains why.

The wick line sits beside the others in the cluster. A cheaper wax that needs a dearer wick may also need more fragrance — total formulation cost handles that — or a different load for the same throw, which the throw-value post prices. If the dearer wick also changes how many candles you scrap, the rejects post folds that in, and the lowest-cost-per-saleable-candle comparison adds every line together.

A cheap wax that needs an expensive wick is not a cheap wax. Count the wick, and count it per candle.

They can. A wick is matched to how a wax melts and feeds the flame in a particular jar with a particular oil. CSI publishes no wick charts, so a side-by-side burn against a control is how you find out.
Should I include wick cost when comparing candle wax?
Yes, whenever the waxes need different wicks or different numbers of wicks. CSI 464 vs CSI 468 leaves ₹23.85 per 200 g candle for a dearer wick before the cheaper wax stops winning.
Are wooden wicks worth the extra cost?
That is a product and burn decision, not just a cost one. On cost alone, a wooden wick adds ₹35.40–₹53.10 over an Eco Thin C1 per candle, which is more than the gap between CSI's soy waxes in a 200 g candle.
Is there a bulk discount on candle wicks?
Eco and Cotton Braided wicks cost the same per wick from 10 to 1,000. Performance Wooden Wicks drop from ₹59.00 to ₹41.30 each between the 10- and 100-pack. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
How do I test which wick works with a new soy wax?
Bracket two or three wick constructions in the new wax against your approved wax and wick as control, three candles each, through full life. Choose the cheapest wick no worse than control on every safety line. The wick-tests-per-fragrance post covers ranges.
Count the wick
Bracket the wicks, cost the cheapest one that passes, and compare waxes per candle — not per kilo.
Eco Candle Wicks from ₹59.00 for 10, Cotton Braided from ₹120.00 for 10, Performance Wooden Wicks from ₹590.00 for 10, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 from ₹260.00 for 500 g, CSI 468 from ₹325.00 and Sandalwood from ₹93.22 for 15 g. Tell us your jar and volume and we will price the bracket and the production order.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; 400 g at 8% = 32 g + 368 g). The 400 g double-wick candle is illustrative (CSI lists no double-wick jar). The 500-candle month, three candles per arm, 3–4 hour burn cycles, a 7-day cure checkpoint, the example bracket result and the 5% pour-loss allowance are labelled examples and working practices. CSI's product pages state these, and they are quoted as the pages' statements, not CSI test results: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% fragrance load; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no fragrance ceiling, melt point or pour temperature published. CSI's CSI 464 page lists 80–90°C as its melt/pour working range; CSI 468's page states pour at 58–60°C. CSI publishes no wick-size charts, burn data or wick equivalences. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
