Soy Candles · Strength
Every soy maker wants a strong candle. Very few suppliers can prove which oil gives one, and we have not published throw measurements either. What we can give you is the list of what makes a soy candle strong, five oils worth testing first, and a test that settles it in your wax.
₹2,216.38
a round-one load-ladder test: five oils at 6%, 8% and 10% in fifteen 50 g jars of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What are the strongest fragrance oils for soy candles? We cannot rank them honestly. CSI has not published throw measurements for any oil. Strength in soy depends on the load, melt pool, cure and room as much as the oil. Five worth testing first, with reasons, are in the candidate table, starting with Eucalyptus Spearmint at ₹68.44 for 15 g.

Does more fragrance oil make a soy candle stronger? Up to a point, and only inside the wax's ceiling: 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464. Beyond the point where the oil stops improving, extra oil adds cost and, in general practice, risks sweating and a poor burn. A load ladder finds that point.

Why does my soy candle smell strong cold but weak when lit? Cold throw and hot throw are different things. A candle can smell strong unlit and still release little scent when lit if the melt pool is small or the candle has not cured. Check the wick and the cure before changing the oil. Which Fragrance Oils Give the Best Hot Throw in Soy Wax? covers hot throw.

How do I test oil strength? Pour each oil at 6%, 8% and 10% in identical 50 g jars of one wax, cure them all for the same time, and score cold throw, throw at 1 and 3 hours, surface and burn on a sheet. See the protocol.
The short answer
Honest position: No throw data is published for any CSI oil. Candidates here are chosen for stated reasons (family, best-selling sort position, price tier), not measured strength.
Levers: Load within the ceiling (Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%), melt pool (wick and jar), cure time, room. Only one of the four is the oil.
Test: Five oils × 6/8/10% in 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jars of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: 12 g oil per oil, 690 g wax, 15 jars. Kit ₹2,216.38.
What "strong" is made of in a soy candle — four levers, only one of them the oil Change one lever at a time. Raising the load cannot fix a small melt pool or a two-day cure. 1 · Oil + loadinside the wax's ceiling2 · Melt poolwick and jar width3 · Curesame days for every test4 · Roomsize, airflow, your nose Strong Ceilings: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% · CSI 464 up to 10% · Natural Soy Pearl: check the product page
Strength is the result of four levers working together. The oil and its load matter, but a narrow melt pool, a short cure or a large draughty room can hide any oil. The load-ladder test on this page holds levers 2 to 4 constant, so the only thing that changes is the oil and how much of it goes in.
Straight answer
Which fragrance oils are strong in soy wax candles, and how can you tell?
Nobody can honestly hand you a strength ranking for your soy wax, and we have not published throw measurements for any oil. What makes a soy candle smell strong is four things together: the oil and its load (within the wax's ceiling, up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for CSI 464), the melt pool, the cure and the room. The oil is only one lever. So test candidates rather than trusting a list. Five worth testing first, for stated reasons, are Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cinnamon, Lemongrass and Lime, Apple Cinnamon and Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired). Pour each at 6%, 8% and 10% in identical 50 g jars of Chunks, cure them together, and score them on one sheet. The oil that keeps improving from 8% to 10% has headroom. The oil that does not is telling you more oil will not help. The whole first round costs ₹2,216.38.
One line: strong is a result you measure in your own wax, not a label on a bottle. Test five oils on a load ladder before you believe anyone's list, ours included.
The five-oil strength test starts with four 15 g testers and one 50 g: Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹68.44, Cinnamon ₹106.20, Lemongrass and Lime ₹116.52, Apple Cinnamon ₹93.22 and Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) 50 g ₹440.00. That is ₹824.38 of oil for a three-step load ladder.

What "strong" means in soy

"Strong" is two different things in a candle. Customers judge the first in the shop and the second at home.

Cold throw is how the candle smells unlit, lid off. It sells the candle in the shop or when the parcel is opened. Hot throw is how far the scent carries into a room when the candle burns. That is what brings a customer back. The two are related but not the same. In general practice, soy is often described as quieter than paraffin on cold throw, and makers commonly give soy candles a cure period before judging hot throw. Neither point is a measured CSI result. Both are reasons to test the way you would sell.

There is a third meaning that makers often miss: character. An oil can be loud and wrong, with the top notes burned off and something flat left behind. A strong candle that no longer smells like its label is not a win. This is why the scoring sheet on this page has a separate line for whether the oil still smells true at one hour and at three.

Finally, strength is relative to the room. A 200 g soy candle that fills a small bedroom may barely register in an open-plan living area. When a customer says a candle is "weak", ask where they burned it. When you test, use the same room for every candle, shut the door, and swap positions between rounds.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easiest page for us to write would be "Top 10 strongest fragrance oils for soy", with our pricier oils at the top. We have not measured throw for any oil, and a ranked list without measurements is marketing, not information. The five candidates below are chosen for reasons we can state. Your load-ladder test is the only ranking that counts, and it may well put a ₹68.44 tester above a ₹440.00 one.

The four levers

Before you buy a single tester for strength, understand what you are testing. The table sets out every factor that makes a soy candle seem strong or weak, what it changes, and how you control it. Only the first two rows are about the oil itself.

Strength factors in a soy container candle · general candle-making practice
What makes a soy candle smell strong, and what you control
Factor What it changes What you control in soy How to test it
Fragrance load How much oil is in the wax Up to 13% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% in CSI 464; no ceiling in this data for Natural Soy Pearl Load ladder in one wax (this page)
The oil's formula Which aroma materials evaporate at candle temperatures Choice of oil only Side-by-side at a fixed load
Melt pool How much wax surface is hot enough to release scent Wick type and size, jar diameter Wick matrix (hot-throw guide)
Cure time How far the oil has settled into the soy Waiting before testing Same cure for every test candle
Room and airflow How far the scent has to travel Where you test Same room, door shut, swap positions
Your nose Adaptation after a few minutes Fresh-air breaks, a second tester Score blind where possible

The load row is the one most makers reach for first, and the one with a hard edge. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%. Those are the wax maker's stated formulation maximums. They are not regulatory limits and they are not targets. For Natural Soy Pearl no ceiling is quoted in this series, so check the product page or ask us on WhatsApp for the wax maker's figure before you test above 10%. Within the ceiling, the question is not "how much can I add?" but "at what load does this oil stop getting better?"

The melt-pool row often decides the result. A wick that leaves a narrow pool heats only part of the surface, and the rest of the oil stays locked in solid wax. Wick sizing for a given jar diameter is not published in our data. The honest route is a burn test, and which oils give the best hot throw in soy sets out a wick-and-cure matrix. On this page the wick and jar are held constant so the load ladder compares like with like.

Separate the oil question from the wick question
If every oil seems weak, suspect the wick, jar or cure, not the oils. If one oil is weak and the others are fine in the same jars with the same wick, the oil is the variable. Run the load ladder first with one wick you trust, then tune the wick for the winners.

Five oils worth testing first

A candidate is not a winner. It is an oil with a good reason to be on the bench.

These five are chosen for reasons we can state: the family they belong to (families commonly chosen for projection), their place in the collection's best-selling sort, and price tier. One premium oil is included on purpose, to test whether paying more buys you more in your wax. The cost columns show what each adds to a 200 g soy candle at 8%, 10% and 12%, priced at the 100 g rate. The 12% column applies only to Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, because it is above CSI 464's 10% ceiling.

Eucalyptus Spearmint Mint-eucalyptus profiles are commonly chosen for projection · #14 in the best-selling sort · cheapest 15 g in the catalogue 15 g ₹68.44 ₹56.64 ₹70.80 ₹84.96
Cinnamon Spice oils are a common festive choice for room fill · real 1 kg saving of 10.0% 15 g ₹106.20 ₹94.40 ₹118.00 ₹141.60
Lemongrass and Lime Citrus-herbal, a family often picked for a bright opening · #17 in the sort · 1 kg saving 11.9% 15 g ₹116.52 ₹94.40 ₹118.00 ₹141.60
Apple Cinnamon Fruit-and-spice festive profile · #9 in the sort · flat ₹4.74/g from 50 g up 15 g ₹93.22 ₹75.90 ₹94.87 ₹113.85
Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) Premium inspired woody profile: tests whether a ₹8.80/g oil earns its price in soy 50 g ₹440.00 (no 15 g) ₹140.80 ₹176.00 ₹211.20

A few notes on the list. Eucalyptus Spearmint is the cheapest 15 g in the catalogue, which makes it a low-risk first test, and its 1 kg is 13.3% cheaper per gram than the 100 g. Cinnamon and Apple Cinnamon matter for the festive run up to Diwali on 8 November. Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) has no 15 g, so its tester is the 50 g at ₹440.00, and at ₹8.80 a gram it is the test of whether the premium tier earns its place. If you want more premium candidates, premium fragrance oils for luxury soy candles goes through that tier.

What is not on the list matters as well. We have left out oils with missing production sizes on the pull date. A strong oil you cannot reorder at 100 g or 1 kg is no use as a hero scent. We have also left out the top inspired-by tier, where a 200 g candle at 8% carries ₹145 or more of oil. Test the principle on these five first, then bring a top-tier oil onto the bench if your price point can carry it.

The load-ladder test

The test answers one question per oil: does it get stronger as the load rises, and where does it stop? Each oil goes into three identical Heart Cutout Velvet Jars, which are listed with a 50 g wax capacity, at 6%, 8% and 10%. That is 3 g, 4 g and 5 g of oil, 12 g per oil in all, leaving 3 g of every 15 g tester. All three loads sit inside both published ceilings, so the result also applies if you later pour in CSI 464. Use Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for all fifteen jars: 138 g per oil, 690 g in total.

1
Weigh everything50 g total per jar: 47 g wax + 3 g oil at 6%, 46 g + 4 g at 8%, 45 g + 5 g at 10%. Weigh on a scale that reads to 0.1 g. At this size, a gram of error is two percentage points of load.
2
Hold every other lever stillSame wick (Eco Thin C1) in every jar, same pour temperature, same room to set. Label each base: oil, load, date. Do not change the wick between loads. The point is to isolate load.
3
Cure all fifteen for the same timeSoy is commonly cured before hot-throw testing, often for one to two weeks. Choose a period and use it for every jar. Score cold throw on the day you start burning.
4
Burn the three loads of one oil togetherLight the 6%, 8% and 10% jars of one oil in the same room at the same time, with space between them. Score throw at one hour and three hours, stepping in from outside each time. Then air the room and move to the next oil.
5
Score on the sheet, not from memoryUse the sheet below for every jar. Your nose adapts within minutes, so a second person scoring blind is worth more than a third round.
6
Read the ladderClear gain from 8% to 10%: the oil has headroom, so a 12% jar in Chunks is worth a round-two test. Little or no gain: 8% is your load, and extra oil is wasted money. Weak at every load: try the wick first, then drop the oil.
One sheet per jar · score 0–3
The strength scoring sheet
Line How to judge Score When
Cold throw Unlit, lid off, at 30 cm 0 none · 1 faint · 2 clear · 3 strong Before first burn
Hot throw, 1 hour Step in from outside the room 0–3 as above 1 hour after lighting
Hot throw, 3 hours Same 0–3 3 hours after lighting
Character Does it still smell like the oil in the bottle? 0 off · 1 flat · 2 true · 3 true and rounded At 1 and 3 hours
Surface Oil beads or wet patches on the set wax 0 heavy · 2 slight · 3 none Before lighting
Burn Soot, flicker, tunnelling 0 poor · 2 minor · 3 clean Throughout

Add the throw and character lines for a strength score out of 12. Record the surface and burn lines separately. A candle that scores 11 on throw but 0 on surface has too much oil for that wax, and in general practice you would not sell it. Keep the sheets. When a customer asks why a scent changed, or a retailer asks how you set your loads, they are your evidence.

The 13% trap. A maker with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks reads "up to 13%" and pours everything at 13% to be safe on strength. The ceiling is a maximum the wax can be formulated to hold, not a recommended load. An oil that peaks at 8% gains nothing at 13% except 10 g more oil per 200 g candle. With Lavender at its 100 g rate that is ₹54.00 a candle for no gain. Let the ladder find the load. Do not let the label set it.

What strength costs per candle

Each load step has a price. Going from 8% to 10% adds 4 g of oil to a 200 g candle. Going to 12% in Chunks adds 8 g. The candidate table shows the rupee effect for each oil. With Eucalyptus Spearmint the step from 8% to 10% costs ₹14.16 a candle. With Mahogany Teakwood it costs ₹35.20. Across a 100-candle run those are ₹1,416.00 and ₹3,520.00. That is why the ladder matters. If the oil does not improve at 10%, you are paying that much for nothing.

The other lever is the oil itself. A value oil at 10% can cost less than a premium oil at 8%: Eucalyptus Spearmint at 10% is ₹70.80 a candle, against ₹140.80 for Mahogany Teakwood at 8%. If the cheaper oil scores as well in your ladder, that is a margin decision made on evidence. Fragrance oils for soy at 6–8% load has the full cost-by-load tables, and the soy hub covers choosing across tiers.

Once you have winners, buying fragrance oils for soy covers sizes and stock checks, buying 1 kg for soy covers when a kilo pays, and Strong Fragrance Oils for Scented Jar Candles applies the same thinking to jar candles in other waxes. If you pour coconut soy as well, Strong Fragrance Oils for Coconut Soy Candles is the sister page for that wax.

The CSI principle
Strong is found at the load where the oil stops improving, not at the wax's ceiling.
The ceiling tells you how far you may go. The ladder tells you how far it is worth going. Every gram above the point where an oil stops improving is money in the jar that the customer never smells.
We have not measured your candle. Neither has anyone else. Pour the ladder.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We have not published hot-throw, cold-throw or wax-compatibility measurements for any oil. This page therefore names candidates with stated reasons and gives you a test, rather than a strength ranking we could not support.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. The velvet jar and 20-wick pack prices come from the 24–25 September pull, and the scale and thermometer were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-gram, per-candle and kit totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

Load ceilings (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Cure periods, sweating and the behaviour of scent families are general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements. The 50 g jars, loads and scoring scale are working assumptions for a fair comparison. For IFRA certificates, MSDS or help planning a test, message +91 7397976926 on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Which fragrance oil has the strongest scent throw in soy wax?
No honest answer is possible without testing in your wax. CSI has not published throw measurements. Test candidates side by side. Good first candidates, for stated reasons, are Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cinnamon, Lemongrass and Lime, Apple Cinnamon and Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired).
How can I make my soy candles smell stronger?
Check four things in order: the melt pool reaches the jar edge (wick), the candle has cured, the room is not too large, and the load is where the oil peaks, which a 6/8/10% ladder shows. Only then change the oil. Stay inside the ceiling: 13% for Chunks, 10% for CSI 464.
Is 10% fragrance load too much for soy wax?
It is the stated maximum for CSI 464 and within the 13% rating for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. Whether it is too much depends on the oil. If a 10% jar sweats or burns poorly, or smells no stronger than 8%, drop back.
Why do my soy candles have no hot throw?
In general practice, the usual causes are a melt pool that does not reach the edge, a short cure, or a load below the oil's sweet spot. Test the wick first. Which Fragrance Oils Give the Best Hot Throw in Soy Wax? has a wick-and-cure test matrix.
Do expensive fragrance oils throw better in soy?
Not automatically. Price reflects the formula. Put a premium oil such as Mahogany Teakwood (₹8.80/g) on the same ladder as a value oil such as Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3.54/g at 100 g) and let the scores decide.
Can I use 13% fragrance oil in soy wax?
Only in a wax rated for it. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%. CSI 464 is rated up to 10%. For Natural Soy Pearl, check the product page. A ceiling is a maximum, not a target. Most oils peak well below it.

Load ceilings are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Candidate reasons cite family, best-selling sort position and price tier only; no throw measurements exist for any CSI oil. "Best-selling" refers to the collection's best-selling sort order on the pull date. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
