Two Candle Jars Both Say 200 ml but Have Different Shapes — Will They Actually Hold the Same Amount of Candle Wax?
शेयर करना
What makes the difference? Where the volume sits. A straight jar has the same ml in every centimetre; a tapered tumbler keeps its widest centimetre at the top, where the headspace goes; a jar with a shoulder and neck keeps up to a quarter of its ml above the point where most makers stop pouring.
What about CSI's 200 ml jars? The Matte 8 × 7 cm family and the 200ml Salsa lug-cap jars both say 200 ml. Neither states a brim or fill line, and the Salsa states no dimensions. Plan the Matte at about 150 g of candle and a shouldered lug-cap jar lower, about 135 g, until you weigh.
How do I compare them? Weigh water to equivalent fill lines (the lower of 1 cm below the rim and just below any shoulder), then pour both from one melt and weigh the cooled candles. Three jars of each.

Five reasons two 200 ml jars hold different candles
Why no 200 ml jar takes 200 g of wax (wax is lighter than water, oil is inside the weight, you stop below the rim) is covered in the cluster hub. This page takes that as given and asks the next question: if two jars both say 200 ml, why do they give different candles? Five reasons, roughly in order of size.
1. One figure is to the brim, the other is not
Capacity is commonly quoted to the brim, but some suppliers quote to a shoulder or to a recommended fill line. A "200 ml" jar measured to the shoulder may hold 220 ml or more at the brim. CSI's Matte family calls its figure "a fill weight of 200 ml" and the Salsa page says "The 200ml capacity"; neither says which line. Your first water-fill to the brim answers it for your jars.
2. Shoulders and necks hold volume you will not fill
A lug-cap or screw-top jar narrows into a shoulder and a threaded neck. That volume counts in the brim figure. Most makers set the fill line at or just below the point where the jar reaches full width, so the melt pool is not confined to the neck and wax does not solidify under a shoulder. In our illustrative lug-cap jar, 23% of the 200 ml sits above that point.
3. Taper puts the volume where the headspace goes
A tumbler that widens towards the rim holds more per centimetre at the top than at the bottom. The headspace comes off the top, so a 1 cm gap costs a tapered tumbler more: 18% of its 200 ml in our example, against 14% for a straight jar. A jar that narrows towards the rim (without a neck) does the opposite.
4. Thick bases and walls hide inside the outside size
Jars are often compared by outside size, and outside size includes the glass. With walls of about 3.5 mm, a jar 7 cm across outside is about 6.3 cm inside, and that inside circle is only 81% of a 7 cm circle. A heavy base of 1.5 cm instead of 1 cm takes half a centimetre off every candle. CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) gives "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm", close to the Matte's listed 8 × 7 cm, and is described as thick-walled with a curved silhouette; it is listed as "150g fill capacity", not 200 ml. Similar outside, a different capacity statement: exactly why outside size is not a comparison.
5. Glass varies between batches
Mass-produced glass is not machined. Base thickness, wall thickness and height vary between pieces and more between production batches. Two jars from the same listing can differ by a few millilitres; two jars from different factories that both say 200 ml can differ by much more. Measure three from each batch, and re-measure when a new consignment arrives. The full list of measurements to take on a bulk order is the bulk jar measurement checklist.
Three shapes, one number: what the curves show
The diagram plots three jars that all hold exactly 200 ml at the brim. Jar A is the series' standard worked example: the Matte family's 8 × 7 cm treated as straight-sided, 7 cm deep inside. Jars B and C are illustrative shapes, not measurements of any CSI listing: B is a shouldered jar with a lug-cap-style neck, 6.6 cm deep; C is a tapered tumbler, 6.4 cm deep. Reading across at each jar's fill line gives the table below.
| Jar | Inside depth | At 1 cm below rim | Practical fill line | ml to that line | Candle × 0.86 to 0.9 | Planning weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · straight (Matte-type) | 7.0 cm | 171 ml | 1 cm below rim | 171 ml | 147 to 154 g | 150 g |
| B · shouldered lug-cap style | 6.6 cm | 177 ml | just below the shoulder, 1.8 cm below rim | 154 ml | 133 to 139 g | 135 g |
| C · tapered tumbler | 6.4 cm | 163 ml | 1 cm below rim | 163 ml | 140 to 147 g | 145 g |
Three things stand out. First, at the same 1 cm gap, the shouldered jar B holds the most (177 ml), because its top centimetre is narrow neck; a maker who compares at "1 cm below the rim" would conclude B holds more. Second, at the line a maker would actually pour B to, it holds the least (154 ml), 10% less than A. Third, the tapered tumbler C gives up 37 ml to a 1 cm gap, against A's 29 ml, because its widest part is the part you leave empty. The shape changes the planning candle from 135 g to 150 g, a spread of 15 g, before any difference in wax or load. Comparing at "the same distance below the rim" is therefore not a fair test on its own; the next section defines one that is.
CSI's two 200 ml families, side by side
On 26 September 2026, 19 in-stock CSI listings state 200 ml: 13 in the Matte 8 × 7 cm family (matte, glossy and frosted colours) and 6 in the 200ml Salsa lug-cap family (clear plus five colours). Two more "200" listings, the Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid and the Amber Glass Jar with Bamboo Lid (both "Fill Weight 200 gm", "H: 8.5 cm x W: 7.5 cm"), are out of stock. We quote what each page states so you can see what is missing.
| What | Matte family (13 listings) | Salsa family (6 listings) |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity wording | "a fill weight of 200 ml" | "The 200ml capacity" |
| Dimensions | "Height 8 cm width 7 cm"; outside or inside not stated | none; only "63mm Lug Cap" in the title |
| Shape clues | none stated | "Wide Mouth Opening"; lug cap implies a threaded neck |
| Lid | none mentioned | golden 63 mm lug cap |
| Heat wording | "withstand high heat" (no figure) | "withstands the heat of hot wax without cracking or warping" (no figure) |
| Per jar | ₹70.80 at 5 or 10 | clear ₹40.12 at 5, ₹29.50 at 50 or 100; coloured ₹62.00 at every size |
| Listing issues | some pages carry copied text (Maroon says "White Matte"; Black Frosted says "Black Matte") | "upcycled" wording; coloured pages say "clear glass"; handles mismatch colours |
| Worked planning weight | about 150 g (series standard example) | about 135 g if shaped like jar B; unknown until weighed |
| Measure first | brim water, water to 1 cm line, inside diameter | brim water, shoulder depth, water to shoulder line, body and neck diameters |
The Salsa planning figure is our illustration, not a measurement: the page gives no dimensions, so we cannot tell you where its shoulder sits. It may hold more than jar B, or less. What we can say from the data is that the two families share a number and not a specification, and that the Salsa gives you nothing to calculate from. It is a jar you must weigh before you set a fill weight. Ask us on WhatsApp for its dimensions; if we cannot confirm them, a 5 Pcs pack at ₹200.60 is the cheapest way to find out.
How to compare two jars fairly
The test takes an afternoon and a scale. It compares what matters to your candle: millilitres below each jar's real fill line, then grams of finished candle from the same melt. The detailed water-to-candle conversion for each CSI wax is in the water-capacity conversion guide; the fill-line mechanics for lidded jars are in the 250 ml lidded-jar guide.
Which jar, once you know: cost per gram of candle
Once you have a planning weight for each jar, compare them per gram of candle, not per jar. Worked example with our planning weights (Matte 150 g; a lug-cap jar shaped like B, 135 g), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at the 1 kg price and Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at its 500 g price (₹2.84 per gram; page: "candles (6-10%)"; every size in stock), 8% load, one C2 wick as a costing placeholder. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
| Jar | Planning candle | Jar cost per 10 g of candle | Materials per candle | Materials per gram of candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte (pack of 5 or 10) | 150 g | ₹4.72 | ₹196.98 | ₹1.31 |
| Salsa clear (100 Pcs) | 135 g | ₹2.19 | ₹144.01 | ₹1.07 |
| Salsa coloured (any pack) | 135 g | ₹4.59 | ₹176.51 | ₹1.31 |
On these numbers the Salsa clear candle is cheaper per candle and per gram of candle, because the jar is less than half the Matte's price. The coloured Salsa, at ₹62.00 a jar, loses that edge: ₹1.31 per gram of candle, the same as the Matte, for 15 g less candle. But price per gram is only one input. The Matte is opaque or frosted, so the fill line and any wet spots are hidden; the Salsa clear shows everything; the Salsa has a lid, the Matte listing mentions none. And the 15 g difference in candle is a difference in what you can declare and charge. If you sell by the jar at one price, the customer gets 10% less wax in the Salsa in this example.
Selling both jars in one range
If you offer both, give each its own fill weight, spec card and label figure, even though both are "200 ml". Across 100 candles, labelling a 135 g candle as 150 g is a 15 g promise per candle you cannot keep; filling it to 150 g would put wax in the neck. Net-quantity declarations on pre-packaged goods in India are governed by the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules; check the current requirements for your product and channel (this is not legal advice). The label process is the label net-weight guide; if one jar looks too empty at its honest weight, the options are in the too-empty-jar guide.
What to buy for the comparison
Five items: both families, the scale that settles it, and one wax so both jars see the same melt. Chosen on page wording, price and stock on 26 September 2026; CSI publishes no burn or thermal data for these jars.

Oil: three Matte candles at 12 g and three Salsa candles at 10.8 g need 68.4 g, so a 50 g bottle is not enough; use 100 g of the oil you already sell, or buy it. Wick the test candles C1 and C2 and they double as your first burn tests.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both 200 ml families compared here and does not sell finished candles. This page points out that our own listings use the same number for two different shapes, that the Salsa listing states no dimensions at all, and that the cheaper jar may well be the better buy for your product. That is deliberate.
Every price and per-jar figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock colours and listings are named. Capacity, dimension and heat wording is quoted from the product pages; the count of 19 in-stock 200 ml listings is taken from the same data.
Jar A's geometry is the series' standard worked example; jars B and C are illustrative shapes, not measurements of CSI jars; the 0.86 to 0.9 factor is a candle-maker rule of thumb; planning weights and the fill-line rule are editorial judgement.
