A film of liquid across the top of a candle that has otherwise set hard is the surplus your wax could not hold, arriving in one go as the wax crystallised. It is measurable, it is usually diagnosable to the gram, and it is a different fault from a separated melt and from a candle that sweats weeks later.

Quick answers — read this first
Why is there oil on top of my candle? Because the wax set around more oil than it holds, and pushed the difference to the easiest surface. The usual causes, in order: a dose above the load your wax page states, a second top-up pour at a different temperature, oil added below the page's stated band so it was never fully in solution, and a cold vessel that froze the surface before the body.

How much oil is actually up there? Work it out rather than guess. Every percentage point above the stated load is 2 g of oil in a 200 g candle, 1.5 g in a 150 g and 1.2 g in a 120 g jar. Two points over on a 200 g candle in Dark Vanilla is ₹30.58 of oil per candle sitting where nobody can smell it.

Is this the same as sweating? No. A film present the first time you look at the set candle is one expulsion. Sweating arrives later and comes back after every warm spell. Streaks inside the wax body are separation. The wipe-and-wait test below tells the three apart.

Can I still sell it? Not as it stands, and not by wiping it. Wipe one, hold it 72 hours, and if it stays dry you have a cosmetic loss and a load to correct on the next batch. If it wets again, the batch is not finished moving and does not go in a box.
The short answer
A surface film is an accounting statement: wax holds fragrance up to a stated quantity, and what it will not hold has to be somewhere. The top of a jar is the lowest-resistance destination, so that is where the arithmetic shows up first — which makes the film a number you can calculate before you can even see it.
Get the dose on paper first, then look at temperature: divide the oil you weighed by the total batch weight and compare it with the lower of your wax page's and your oil page's stated figures. Only when the dose is defensible is the film worth blaming on the pour.
Then wipe once and wait 72 hours: dry at 72 hours means the candle has finished shedding and the problem is on your recipe card, not in the jar. Wet again at 72 hours means migration is ongoing and the batch is not a saleable product yet.

The bars are arithmetic, not a prediction: they show how much oil is in the candle above the figure its wax page states, which is the maximum that could be expelled. How much actually reaches the surface depends on the wax, the vessel and the room — which is precisely why the number on the recipe card is more reliable than the look of one jar.
Straight answer
Why is there a layer of oil sitting on top of my candle, and is the candle ruined?
Because setting wax is a solvent that shrinks. While the wax is liquid it will carry a great deal of oil; as it crystallises, its capacity falls to whatever the formulation is rated for, and the difference is expelled rather than absorbed. The top surface is the easiest route out, so that is where it collects — one film, arriving once, present the first time you look at a candle that has otherwise set hard. Start with the arithmetic, not the appearance. Divide the oil you weighed by the total weight of the batch and compare it with the lower of two published figures: your wax's — up to 10% on CSI 464, up to 13% on CSI 468, an 8–13% of total wax weight band on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — and your oil's, which on British Rose reads "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax". Every point above the binding figure is 2 g of oil in a 200 g candle. If the dose is inside both figures, the suspects become the pour: a second top-up at a different temperature, an addition made below the page's stated band, or a cold vessel. As for whether it is ruined — wipe one candle, wait 72 hours and press a fresh tissue on it. Dry means a finished, cosmetic loss and a load to correct next time. Wet again means the candle is still moving, and a candle that is still moving is not stock. Never simply wipe a case and pack it.
One line: a film on top is the surplus arriving in one go — calculate it in grams, wipe one and wait 72 hours, and correct the load rather than the surface.

Two questions that name the fault before you touch anything

Three different faults get described in the same six words. Two questions sort them, and both are free.

Before any fix, get the label right. Question one: where is the oil? On the top surface as a continuous film, in discrete beads, or visible inside the body of the wax when you cut a test candle open. Question two: does it come back? Wipe it once, leave the candle at a steady room temperature for 72 hours, and press a fresh tissue on it. Those two answers are the whole diagnosis, and they map cleanly onto three separate guides.

Say it once more in plain words, because this is where most bad advice comes from: separation is a mixing failure you can catch in the jug; oil on top is one expulsion visible as soon as the candle sets; sweating is a repeat expulsion that returns whenever the candle warms. Same-looking symptom, three clocks, three shortlists.

Do not diagnose from a photograph, including your own. A film and a sheen look identical in a phone picture, and beads look like a film once they have merged. The tissue does the work that the eye cannot: press it flat, five seconds, lift, and look at the paper rather than the candle. A tissue that comes away clean is not a fault, however shiny the wax looked. A tissue that comes away translucent is oil, in an amount you can then go and calculate.

How much oil is up there — in grams, then in rupees

The useful version of this question is never "is there oil on top" but "how many grams of oil are in this candle that its wax page does not authorise". That figure is one multiplication away, it does not need a laboratory, and it is the same figure that tells you what the fault cost. The table takes the binding figure as your reference point and prices the excess at 1 kg pricing on two oils at opposite ends of the range.

Worked out above: surplus grams = candle weight × points over ÷ 100, so a 200 g candle two points over its stated load carries 200 × 2 ÷ 100 = 4 g of oil with nothing published to say the wax will hold it. Oil per gram is the 1 kg listed price ÷ 1,000: British Rose ₹3,068 ÷ 1,000 = ₹3.068/g; Dark Vanilla ₹7,646 ÷ 1,000 = ₹7.646/g. The ₹4.58 per-gram gap between those two oils is why the same 4 g mistake is a nuisance on one recipe and a real hole in the margin on another. Now the sentence that changes behaviour. Surplus oil is the only ingredient you pay for twice — once at the bottle and again when it ruins the surface of the candle you were going to sell. It does not reach a nose, because oil lying on top of set wax is not oil evaporating out of a melt pool; that argument is made in full in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker. And it does not stop at the oil bill: a hundred 200 g candles poured two points over on Dark Vanilla carry ₹3,058.40 of oil you will wipe off, on top of the labour, the tissues and the jars you now cannot ship on time.

Five ways a film gets on top — including at a perfectly legal load

Dose is the first suspect and the most common, but it is not the only one, and a maker who has already checked the maths deserves the rest of the list. Three of the five below happen at a load comfortably inside every stated figure, which is why "I only used 8%" is not the end of the conversation.

The top-up pour is the cause makers never suspect, because it feels like good practice. Soy shrinks and sinks, so the instinct is to keep a little melt back and level the tops later. Two things then go wrong at once: the second pour is usually cooler than the first, so it sets as a separate layer rather than fusing, and the interface between the two is a boundary that oil can travel along and collect at. If your film is confined to the top few millimetres and has a visible edge, stop topping up and pour once to the finished height instead. A sunken top is a cosmetic problem with a cosmetic fix — a pass with a hot air gun re-levels the surface without adding a single gram of anything.

The wipe-and-wait protocol, in six steps

This is the procedure that decides whether you have a finished cosmetic loss or an unfinished batch, and it takes 72 hours of waiting and about ten minutes of work. Run it on a sample, keep the paper, and write the result on the batch card — because "it seemed fine after I wiped it" is not a record and will not stop you making the same batch again in March.

At 72 hours, press a fresh tissue on it and read the two papers togetherClean second tissue: the expulsion is over, and what you have is a cosmetic loss plus a load figure to correct. Stained second tissue: migration is continuing, the candle is not a finished product, and the next question is whether the load is over the stated figure or whether temperature is driving it.

Burn one from cold for three hours before you decide anything about the restSurface faults and burn faults travel together. Record minutes to a full melt pool at the glass, flame behaviour, soot and mushrooming — and note whether the pool smells fragrant or oily. A candle that shed a film and then burns clean, opens its pool and smells right is a different commercial problem from one that also drowns its wick.
Keep the tissues, date the paper
Two tissues in a dated envelope are the cheapest quality record in candle making, and they settle arguments that photographs cannot — including the one with yourself in three weeks when you are deciding whether to repeat a recipe. Write jar number, batch, date and time on each. If you are running several scents, a pen thermometer reading on the same line turns the envelope into a usable process record.

Can you sell it? The honest commercial answer

Wiping a candle changes how it looks. It does not change what is in it, and the box does not know the difference.

This is where a small brand either builds a reputation or spends one. There are three defensible outcomes and one indefensible one, and the difference between them is what you know rather than what the candle looks like on the day you pack it.

The wipe-and-pack shortcut is the one mistake that reaches a customer. Migration is slow and temperature-driven. A case that is dry after a wipe in an air-conditioned workroom in February can be wet again in a courier van in May, and the person who opens it will not see a cosmetic event — they will see a leaking candle and a brand that shipped it. If a batch failed the 72-hour wipe, the honest destinations are testers, staff candles and samples given with an explanation. None of those costs you a customer. One packed case can.

There is a purely commercial argument for the same conclusion, which is worth saying out loud because it is more persuasive than the ethical one for most people under pressure: a returned candle costs more than an unsold one. You lose the materials either way, but a return also costs the shipping, the refund, the replacement, the message thread and the review — and it removes the one thing a small Indian candle business runs on, which is the reorder.

Oils whose pages publish what a surface fault needs

Three things on an oil page matter when you are looking at a film: a stated candle load, because it is half the binding figure; a stated vanillin position, because it separates a discolouration question from an oil-migration one; and a stated cure, because a surface you judge on day two is a surface still settling. Per-candle figures below assume a 200 g candle at 8%, so 16 g of oil, at 1 kg pricing.

Floral · single note · nothing to confuse a surface reading
British Rose Fragrance Oil
The cleanest oil in the range for diagnosing a surface, because it removes one whole variable: the page states "Vanillin Content 0%" with "No discolouration - safe for white, cream, and pastel waxes", so any change you see on the top of a pale candle is oil rather than yellowing. It also publishes a load of "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax", a cure of "48 to 72 hours" for soy, and a measured flash point of 192°C. The profile is stated as a single note — "Fresh, dewy roses with subtle green and soft floral undertones". One CSI customer, Emma Bechara, notes that "you can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell", which is exactly the direction a surface fault should push you.

Gourmand · vanillin-bearing · where two faults get confused
Dark Vanilla Fragrance Oil
The counter-example, and the most expensive oil per gram on this page, which makes overshoot costly. Its page states a candle load of "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours" and "6-8% for paraffin wax, cure 24-48 hours", with "10-15% for wax melts" — and that last figure is a melt rate, not a candle rate. It is also explicit about colour: "Will Dark Vanilla discolour my candles? Yes. Dark Vanilla contains vanillin which causes yellowing in white and light-coloured wax. This is normal and expected for vanilla-heavy oils. It does not affect performance." So on this oil, a darkening top is documented behaviour and a wet top is the fault. Notes are stated as rich vanilla and spice over deep caramel and cream, on dark amber and warm musk. Stated flash point: ~191–193°C.

Worth a look if your film is following the pour rather than the dose, because this is the CSI wax with the most specific and the coolest published process: a stated "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C", a stated "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C" and a stated "Fragrance Load Up to 13%", described for "single-pour container applications". A 58–60°C pour is a narrow window and it is nothing like the 80–90°C a soy flake page states, so a thermometer stops being optional and the habit of a single pour to the finished height becomes much easier to keep. Its price per kilo also steps down at 5 kg and 10 kg, from ₹650 to ₹637.

The CSI principle
Fix the number on the card, not the surface of the candle. The surface is only reporting the number.
A tissue removes a symptom in four seconds and teaches you nothing. A weighed dose compared against a published figure removes the cause and tells you what to do differently on every batch after this one.

The pour-day checklist that stops it happening again

Everything above is diagnosis. This is the short list that makes the diagnosis unnecessary, and none of it is difficult — it is simply the difference between pouring a recipe and pouring an intention.

Write the binding figure at the top of the card before you melt anythingLook up both pages, take the lower number, and write it down with its basis — "10%, of the finished candle" or "8–13%, of total wax weight". A load you cannot state on paper is a load you cannot defend when a film appears, and the two bases differ by enough to matter.

Frequently asked questions

Why is oil sitting on top of my candle?
Because the wax set around more oil than its formulation holds and expelled the difference onto the easiest surface. Check the dose first: divide the oil you weighed by the total batch weight and compare it with the lower of the two published figures — your wax page's and your oil page's. Every percentage point over is 2 g of oil in a 200 g candle. If the dose is inside both figures, look at a second top-up pour, an addition made below the page's stated add band, or a cold vessel and a draughty cooling shelf.
Can I just wipe the oil off and sell the candle?
Only once you know the expulsion has finished. Wipe one candle, hold it 72 hours at a steady temperature and press a fresh tissue on it: a clean second tissue means a cosmetic loss and a load to correct next time, and those candles can be cured, burn tested and sold. A stained second tissue means migration is continuing, and a candle that is still moving in your workroom will move again in a courier van. Wiping changes the appearance; it does not change what is in the wax.
How is this different from my candle sweating?
By the clock, and by whether it returns. Oil sitting on top is one expulsion, present the first time you look at the set candle, usually within 1 to 48 hours of pouring. Sweating is a repeat expulsion, appearing days or weeks later on a candle that set clean, and specifically after the candle has been warm. Streaks or wet zones inside the wax body are a third thing again — separation, a mixing failure you could have caught in the jug.
I only used 8% fragrance oil. Why is there still oil on top?
Then the dose is probably not your fault and the pour is. The three common causes at a legal load are a second top-up pour that set as a separate layer rather than fusing, oil added below the band your wax page states so it was never fully in solution, and a cold vessel or a draught on the cooling shelf. Check the basis of your 8% too: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states its band as a share of total wax weight, so an 8% intended one way can be a different number of grams the other.
Does oil on top mean the candle will smell stronger?
No — the opposite, in practice. Oil lying on the surface of set wax is not oil dissolved in a melt pool, and it is the pool that releases fragrance when the candle burns. So the surplus you paid for is the part that cannot work: it reaches a tissue rather than a room. The full argument, with arithmetic, is in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker. If you want more perceived strength without raising the load, the levers are cure, wick size and note structure.
My candle's top has gone yellow as well as oily. Is that the same problem?
Two separate things, and some oil pages tell you so. Colour change is vanillin, and it is documented per product: the Dark Vanilla page states plainly that it "contains vanillin which causes yellowing in white and light-coloured wax. This is normal and expected for vanilla-heavy oils. It does not affect performance." British Rose states 0% vanillin and no discolouration. Wetness is the fault; yellowing may simply be the oil. Use the tissue to tell them apart.
